Galloway’s Own Ryan Connelly,

NASA Employee Visits Assumption Hometown boy, Ryan Connelly, a 2004 Assumption Regional Catholic School graduate, visited his alma mater on December 21, 2016 to give the children in first grade a sneak peek on a project he is working on for NASA. Ryan said, the day is fast approaching when NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) will embark on deep space exploration missions, including sending astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft to Mars. “Right now my goal is to increase awareness about the SLS and get everyone excited about the launch,” says Connelly, who grew up in Atlantic City, N.J., before earning his undergraduate degree in business from Stockton University in Galloway, N.J. “But every day I’ve learned something new!” The children listened intently as Ryan gave his slide show demonstration on the project. The questions and answers segment of his visit proved to be enlightening. The children had a real desire to learn more about what NASA plans to do in the future with the explorations of space.

Absegami High School Emanon Players did it again with their performance of “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown”. Directed by Chip Garrison, the musical based on the comic strip “Peanuts” by Charles M. Schulz, is a salute to everyone’s favorite “lovable loser” Charlie Brown, his engimatic beagle Snoopy and his friends. The original Broadway show ran in 1967 and was revised with updated music in 1999. There’s something about the holiday season that makes us long for our memories of childhood. Charles Schulz’s characters recapture all that was sweet and innocent about childhood, and allows us to look back with fresh eyes on our own experiences growing up said Chip Garrison. Spencer Lyons did a fantastic job in capturing the true essence of Charlie Brown’s character, and what would be Charlie Brown without his faithful companion Snoopy played by Coby Alavez. The music, dancing, and dead on acting of this wonderful cast is to be commended for three nights of fun loving performances. These Emanon Players are phenomenally talented and you should get out and experience it. Check out their next performance of “Mary Poppins” March 10, 11, and 12. On December 21, 2016 the children of Reeds Road Elementary room 28, made beautiful holiday cars for a local assisted living facility. The children were happy to be able to bring smiles to some people who need it most during the holiday season.

COOKIE WALK

Once again, Carol Johnson and Marian Cicarelli from St. Elizabeth Ann Seton put together another great Christmas Cookie Walk this year. It may have been snowing, raining and cold but on Saturday, December 17, 2016, the volunteers showed up at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish ready to serve out those wonderful homemade cookies. Father Perry said “the cookie elves, Barbara and Barry Doughty, Colleen Felix, Beverly and Tony Guiliante and Marilyn Moore made such a large amount of various cookies, from plain chocolate chip to the decadence of macaroons. Their hard work paid off because they looked and smelled delicious.” Carol Johnson, chairperson, said “without the many parish volunteers, students from Holy Spirit High School, Gabby and her children with help of setup and breakdown, the many who helped bake the cookies and of course Marian Cicarelli for getting the baskets together to raffle off, these wonderful people truly made for a fantastic cookie walk and I thank them”. Look forward to their cookie walk next Christmas season. A great way to get homemade cookies without the work all while supporting your community, great job to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton for another great Christmas event.

On Saturday, December 20, 2016, Reeds Road Elementary held their winter concert. The chorus, advanced band and jazz band performed a selection of holiday music to a packed house. The chorus, directed by Mr. Frank Soltys, sang “We gather here together”, “Do You Hear”, “Mostly What I Wish For”, “Christmas Time is Here”, and “We All Need Peace”. The Advance band and jazz band, directed by Mr. Ben Fong, played wide array of holiday music; “A Chanukah Festival”, “Christmas Concerto #3” featuring soloists: Sophia Amurao on the flute, Andrew Krumaker on alto sax and Cayla Kirby on clarinet, “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy”, “Jingle Bells Upside Down”, “French Carol Festival”. Played by the jazz band; “Deckin’ the Hall” featuring soloists: Andrew Krumaker on baritone sax and Vraj Sheth on trumpet, and “I’ll be Home for Christmas” featuring soloists: Derek Tran on alto sax and Shawn O’Brien on trumpet. To end the concert the chorus and the advanced band performed together “Holiday Sing Along” arranged by Mr. Ben Fong, band director. The students did a wonderful job of showing off their talents by singing and playing such a wide range of music.

A Healthy 2017 Years ago I set out on a mission to help people live healthier lives and gain wise understandings about medical health and wellness concerns facing us – and our world, today. My mission was birthed while enduring significant challenges to my health, spirit, and relationships. When things are going well we enjoy our successes. It is not until we falter that we stop to take notice of our fragility. And I am certainly not alone when it comes to life-altering events. My dear friend buried her infant child—there are no words to describe her loss. Yet, she lives a life with conviction and purpose and service to others. Another faced malignant breast cancer requiring over ten disfiguring surgical procedures within a span of just two years along with chemotherapy. She relishes every moment. And when I ask her why she is so amazing she replies: “I was not supposed to be here. Every day is a gift and I don’t take that for granted.” And, too, the patients that provide me the privilege of caring for them have endured unimaginable testaments that shock me to my core and at the same time raise my spirit with how many have found the courage and strength to not just survive, but thrive. They inspire me. It is my great honor to share with you issues and concerns facing each of us today—directly or of those we love (men, women, children of all ages), and relevant timely topics. It is my driving commitment to provide well researched, concise, easy-to-understand, vital understandings with insightful anecdotes that is relative to both genders, generation X, Y, Z and baby boomers, and everyday life. And while each of us are wonderfully and uniquely individual, there is nothing better than being the best we can in each moment. This is the spice of life. Today, I want to discuss an important concept: health and wellness. We strive to live long, happy, and prosperous lives. In order to do so we must work at maintaining good health—staying active, eating balanced meals, not smoking, and undergoing routine health screenings. Health is generally defined as the overall physical and mental state of a person; it is the absence of disease such as illness, injury or pain. Our health is our foundation and it is up to us to make sure that that foundation stays strong in order to support everything that lies on it. Wellness refers to the state of being in optimal physical, mental, social, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, environmental, and occupational wellbeing. It is the complete integration of body, mind, and spirit--the realization that everything we do, think, feel, and believe has an effect on our state of wellbeing. There is no medical fix to attaining wellness. And in fact, even with “imperfect” health, we can still attain wellness—the best us. Wellness is a way of living, a lifestyle choice. It is essentially about living a life full of personal responsibility and, therefore, taking proactive steps which requires knowledge and understanding. Ultimately, wellness is a choice and a process. It is an awareness that there is no end point but that health and happiness are always possible in the present moment, here and now. Wellness calls for continuing improvement and self-renewal in all areas of life—it searches for new levels of excellence. As we look at our future—next week, a month from now, one year from now, 10 years, even 20-40 years from now—“The choices we make today IS the life we lead tomorrow.” The choices we make now—from the quality of our relationships to the food and beverages we consume to how much we sleep we get to the way we manage stress—have the power to secure vibrant health and well-being for the rest of our life. And some may feel, it’s too late, or why start now. It is never too late to make foundational changes and choose a path of wellness. I have seen miracle success stories where patients made important, impactful, lifestyle choices to achieve their best self. I clearly recall how the father of a colleague of mine went from being well over 300 pounds, a long-term heavy smoker, and a “couch potato,” by his own description, to a triathlete—all because of an error. His life-altering event was a false positive heart stress test that had everyone scared and him taken by ambulance to the hospital to be admitted and scheduled urgently for a triple cardiac bypass surgery. Just prior to having this major surgery, he underwent a more definitive test (cardiac catheterization to assist the surgeons with their plan) that showed that his heart vessels were in fact clean as a whistle and his urgent surgery was not needed. It was cancelled. He saw this moment as a wakeup call to an unhealthy lifestyle and made the commitment to seize his “second-chance” at life. My hope is that our time together will encourage you to take action to achieve health and wellness…and yes, while making an impact on your loved ones on the importance of wise choices and too, influencing a new generation of balanced thinking amongst our youth. The rewards of well-being are vast. And we must all move forward with managing our “whole person” as a top priority, and remembering that the decisions we make today will impact the life we lead tomorrow. It is my driving passion and great honor to be a wellness agent in providing balanced, healthy understandings …for you and your loved ones. Let’s make a toast -- to choose wisely! Here’s to a long, healthy life!!

Assumption Regional Catholic School held its annual Christmas Pageant on Friday December 17,2016 at 7pm at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish. The children were all dressed to the nines ready to perform Christmas music to a packed house of their families. Each of the grades from PreK to 8th grades each performed a song. Special recognition goes out to the third grades classes that sang “Silent Night” while doing sign language, the seventh and eighth grades performed acapella without a single music class. The teachers of the seventh and eighth grades were able to pull together their musical talents to prepare the children for such a wonderful night of joyous music. At the end of the performances, the winner of the essay contest entry read allowed by Father Nick Dudo. Each year they are given a topic to write an essay about and the winner, given a trip to Lancaster for a special Christmas event. This year’s winner announced by Father Nick Dudo, said that out of 115 entries it was very difficult to pick just one. He announced the top five entries and shook hands with each congratulating them on such an outstanding job on their essays. Congratulations to all the children for such a wonderful performance of Christmas music and to Sarah Reed for winning the essay contest.
