Gil Haugan Construction had used their existing workspace for 29 of their 52 years. Visitors had often driven by the entrance, the interior space tended to isolate staff from one another, it was poorly lit, and did not have many of amenities expected by younger employees. The building needed to change to meet the needs of an expanding staff and to reflect the firm’s status as one of the top three builders in the region.

The project reoriented the building with a new, clearly defined public entrance on the west side, adding 2,255 s.f. overall. Intuitive circulation links the lobby to the main conference room, staff meeting room and open office area. Abundant skylights provide natural light throughout the workstations and offices. This allowed the existing exterior walls to remain intact, respecting the structure the previous generation built in 1986. Limited doors and expansive interior glazing connect coworkers and encourage collaboration in a variety of settings. Openness and transparency were design goals, reflecting GHC’s business model, including open book accounting and clear communication with their clients.

“Our only stipulation was that the design concept should communicate who Gil Haugan Construction is and the work we do. We are a general contractor that also offers steel and pre-cast erection, concrete foundations and flatwork, and custom casework fabrication services. The daylighting strategy used all existing openings as well as new windows and skylights to fill the workspaces with natural light.
