VISIT THE CATHOLIC SITES IN

Korea In Commemoration of Pope Francis' Visit to Korea

2014-07-29 오후 7:22:

Catholicism in Korea began with a group of Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910) scholars’ academic interest in Catholic books like Cheonjusirui (De Deo Verax Disputatio ) published in China, in the early 17th century, late Joseon. In 1784, Peter Yi Seung-hun became the first Korean to be baptized. After his baptism in Beijing, Yi returned to Joseon and founded a Christian community. With this historical event, the Catholic Church in Korea was established. This is when Catholicism had its beginning as religion in Joseon. The growth of the Catholic Church in Korea was not easy at the time, as Confucianism was highly dominant. The places introduced in this booklet are proof of how much the faithful and the Catholic Church suffered and were ruthlessly persecuted for more than 100 years until the late 19th century, when freedom of religion was finally granted. Despite persecution, Christians continued to unite and form communities across the country, persistently spreading Catholicism in Korea. Today, there are about 5.44 million Catholics in Korea. Due to His Holiness Pope Francis’ honorable visit to Korea, this booklet introduces major Catholic sites in Korea and nearby attractions along with the Pope’s itinerary.

Welcome Message

I would like to express my warmest welcome to Pope Francis’ visit to Korea.

I am very grateful that the Holy Father has kept in mind the young

people of Asia and the Korean faithful, and has decided to travel such long way to our country.

On the Mass of Thanksgiving for the creation of new cardinals, the Holy Father offered words of affection to me that he really loves

Korea; now that he is really coming to our country, I can feel the

abundant grace of God. The Holy Father’s Papal visit to Korea is great joy and blessing to our country.

I pray that Pope Francis’ visit will bring reconciliation and peace

to the Korean Peninsula; I hope that this will be the chance for all

of Asia to feel the peace of our Lord. May this also be a time for the poor and the marginalized people to regain hope.

Prayer in Preparation for the Visit of Pope Francis to Korea and for the Beatification of Korean Martyrs

Loving Heavenly Father, We thank you for the blessings you are bestowing upon the Catholic Church in Korea, a church begun without the help of missionaries. We thank you for the visit of Pope Francis, the apostle of peace, to Korea and for the beatification of Korean martyrs. Moreover, we thank you for the opportunity of New Evangelization, with the gathering of the Asian youths for the Asian Youth Day in Korea.

Help us to imitate the spirit of the martyrs and strive with renewed enthusiasm for the faith so that the Gospel permeate our lives, as well as the life of the Church and of the society. Gather us into a community of the culture of life, of charity and of peace, accompanying our poor neighbors, who suffer and are neglected, and sharing the light of faith. Bring about peace on the Korean Peninsula through reconciliation and unity of our people by the power of the Gospel message. Thus, may we dedicate ourselves to the evangelization of Asia and let your light and glory shine forth on all the world. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Mary, Immaculately Conceived, and St Joseph, who are patrons of the Church in Korea, Pray for us.

The 6th Asian Youth Day The first Asian Youth Day was held in Hua Hin, Thailand in 1999. This year, the 6th Asian Youth Day will be held in Solmoe Shrine, Korea. This will be the first time a Pope has ever attended Asian Youth Day. Pope Francis will meet with the young people of Asia and listen to their thoughts and worries, and discuss what the role young people should and can play in the Catholic Church.

ST. ANDREW KIM DAE-GEON St. Kim Dae-geon was born as the eldest son to Catholic parents, Ignatius Kim Je-jun and Ursula Ko in 1821. In August 1845, Andrew Kim was ordained by Bishop Ferréol (Jean-Joseph-Jean-Baptiste, 1808–1853) and became the first ordained native Korean priest. After returning to his home country, Father Kim started preaching and evangelizing in Seoul and Yongin of Gyeonggi-do Province. In 1846, Father Kim was captured and beheaded at the age of 26 in Saenamteo (see p. 24).

Solmoe Shrine Not only is Solmoe Shrine the venue of the 6th Asian Youth Day 2014 but also the birthplace of St. Andrew Kim Dae-geon (1821–1846), Korea’s first Catholic priest. Solmoe is where Father Andrew Kim Dae-geon, his father, grandfather and greatgrandfather —4 generations of martyrs— lived. Entering Solmoe Shrine, the first thing you see is St. Andrew Kim’s restored birthplace. St. Andrew Kim Dae-geon Memorial Hall exhibits St. Andrew Kim’s letters and reports on the history of martyrdom. Visitors can also watch a documentary film on the life of St. Andrew Kim Dae-geon (Korean, Chinese, English languages available). Solmoe, which literally translates to “pine tree hill,” boasts a pine grove of 33,000m² along with a statue and monument of St. Andrew Kim Dae-geon. INFORMATION

Visitation of Seosomun Martyrs’ Shrine

INFORMATION

This is where the largest number of Christians died as martyrs in Korea, including Peter Yi Seung-hun (1756– 1801, Korea’s first baptized Catholic), 44 of the 103 martyr saints, and 27 of the 124 martyrs to be beatified this time. Today, the shrine has been transformed into a park where the Martyrdom Monument shows the brutal yet pious scenes of martyrdom.

Beatification of 124 Martyrs The “Beatification of 124 Martyrs” is to be held at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul to beatify the 124 martyrs including Paul Yun Jichung (1759–1791), Korea’s first Catholic martyr. Among the 124 martyrs, Father James Zhou Wen-mo (1752–1801, Chinese), Korea’s first foreign priest, will be the only foreign born martyr to be beatified at the ceremony. Pope Francis will attend and officiate at the beatification ceremony. This is very rare, for the pope usually only attends beatification ceremonies held in the Vatican.

Gwanghwamun Square

In Gwanghwamun Square stand huge statues of King Sejong the Great (1397–1450) and Admiral Yi Sun-sin (1545–1598), two of the most respected historical figures in Korea. To each side of the square stretch “waterways of history” where milestones of Korean history are engraved. Additionally, the “Story of King Sejong” Exhibition Hall describes King Sejong’s astounding contributions and brilliant achievements as well as the history of hangeul (Korean alphabet). INFORMATION

Meet with the Disabled, Religious, and Lay People Pope Francis will visit the Eumseong Kkottongnae to meet with the severely disabled and to bring the love of Christ to them. He will also meet with the religious and lay people of the Catholic Church in Korea. In consideration of his Korean brothers and sisters, Pope Francis plans to say part of his prayers in Korean. He will give thanks to the Catholic lay people for being the foundation of and playing a key role in the Catholic Church in Korea.

▲Stone inscription: "Even if you have only the strength to beg for food, it is the blessing of the Lord."

Kkottongnae Kkottongnae (Flower Village), a social welfare institution, was established with the aim of looking after and caring for people who were abandoned by their own family and society. One day, Father John Oh Woong-jin, founder of Kkottongnae, saw a poor old man, Peter Choe Gui-dong (?–1990), sharing what little he had with beggars. Deeply impressed by Choe’s warm-heart, Fr. John Oh used all his money (1,300 won) to build a five-room house and called it the “House of Love.” In 1976 Fr. Oh welcomed beggars and the poor to the “House of Love” and looked after them. This is the humble beginning of Kkottongnae (Eumseong Kkottongnae). Over time, Kkottongnae has grown into a global social welfare program helping those in need at home and around the world. Today, there are Kkottongnae facilities in Gapyeong, Korea and in other countries including the Philippines, India, and Uganda. INFORMATION

Meet with Bishops of Asia & Asian Youth Day Closing Mass Pope Francis is scheduled to meet with Asian bishops at Haemi Martyrs’ Shrine, and then attend the closing mass for the Asian Youth Day. The closing mass is to be celebrated under the theme “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15).

Seosan Haemieupseong Fortress The construction of Seosan Haemieupsoeng Fortress was completed in 1491 during the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910). Built on flat land, the area of the fortress is approximately 200,000 m². The fortress, registered as Historic Site No. 116, is the most intact, well-preserved fortress in Korea. Admiral Yi Sunsin (1545–1598) served here as a military officer for ten months in 1579. Haemi is also a place where Pius Kim Jin-hu (1739–1814), one of the 124 servants of God and great-grandfather of St. Andrew Kim Dae-geon (1821–1846), was martyred while in prison. Today, in the square within the fortress is the site of the prison and a Hoya tree (a pagoda tree) that was used as a torture tool during times of persecution. Along the road outside the southern gate of Haemieupseong Fortress is a stone bridge where Christians were brutally executed. Jarigaejil, which referred to hitting grain with a thick rope made of straw to sort the grain, was a cruel way of torture and execution. Christians were relentlessly smashed against the stone bridge as if they were thick ropes of straw. In 2009, the original stone was replaced with a replica, and the original was moved to the Yeosutgol Martyrs’ Memorial Hall, inside Haemi Martyrs’ Shrine, to be preserved. INFORMATION

Haemi Martyrs' Shrine (Yeosutgol) This is where Christians were buried alive during the Catholic persecution between 1866 and 1868. Until the very moment of their death, Christians cried out “Yesu, Maria (Jesus, Mary),” which to nonbelievers sounded like “Yeosumeori” and eventually the area became known as “Yeosutgol.” Jindumbeong, where Christians were tied, thrown into the water, and left to drown, the 16-meter-high Haemi Martyrs’ Memorial Tower constructed in honor of the noble death of numerous martyrs, the tomb of the unknown martyrs, an open-air chapel built where the relics of martyrs had been discovered, and the original jarigaedol (stone used for jarigaejil) are all preserved inside Haemi Martyrs’ Shrine. Situated nearby is Hanti Pass, through which martyrs were transferred to Haemi from the Naepo region. Along the pass is the “Way of the Cross,” where all 14 Stations of the Cross are located, with the 1st Station starting at the top of the pass. INFORMATION

Mass for Peace and Reconciliation The Mass for Peace and Reconciliation held at the Myeongdong Cathedral will mark the end of Pope Francis’ official schedule in Korea. The leaders of Korea’s seven major religious groups have been invited to the mass where Pope Francis will deliver a homily about peace and reconciliation on the Korean Peninsula.

Myeongdong Cathedral As the cathedral of the Seoul Archdiocese and the birthplace of the first faith community of the Catholic Church in Korea, Myeongdong Cathedral has played a key role in spreading Catholicism in Korea. In the underground level of the Cathedral is a chapel. The area was initially built to serve as a crypt for martyrs. Partial remains of the five saints—Bishop Laurent Imbert (1796–1839), Father Pierre Maubant (1803–1839), Father Jacques Chastan (1803–1839), Anthony Kim Seong-u (1795–1841), and Francis Choe Kyong-hwan (1805–1839)—and the relics of Father Jean Pourthié (1830–1866), Father Michel Petitnicolas (1828–1866), and the two nameless martyrs who died in 1839 are enshrined in the crypt. The Cathedral is located in Myeong-dong, a bustling shopping district of Seoul that is always crowded with tourists. Not so far away from Myeong-dong is Namsangol Hanok Village, where traditional houses are well preserved. Also nearby are N Seoul Tower, which offers great panoramic views of the city, and Namdaemun Market, where visitors can buy just about anything at very attractive prices. INFORMATION

Jungnimdong Yakhyeon Catholic Church The Jungnimdong Yakhyeon Catholic Church is a memorial church constructed to honor Seosomun Martyrs’ Shrine and is located on a hill that offers a beautiful view of the Shrine (see p. 12). The Jungnimdong Yakhyeon parish was separated from the Myeong-dong parish in 1891 and became the second parish in Seoul, and its building, very unusual for a church building, was designated Historic Site No. 252. The relics of 16 saints and the memorial tablets of 44 saints who were martyred outside Seosomun Gate are enshrined in the church. The Seosomun Martyrs’ Shrine Exhibition Hall, which is located within church grounds, displays a catechism and spiritual books used by martyrs during the four major persecutions, the family tree of Columba Kang Wan-suk (1761–1801), a female catechist and martyr who died at Seosomun, documents that belonged to French missionaries, and more. Waegogae Shrine Waegogae is where the government entity that made roof tiles and bricks during the 500-some years of the Joseon Dynasty was located, and it is said bricks from Waegogae were used in the construction of the Myeongdong Cathedral and the Jungnimdong Yakhyeon Catholic Church. Corpses of martyrs were temporarily buried in Waegogae before being transported to other places, and St. Andrew Kim Dae-geon (1821– 1846) is also known to have been temporarily rested here before being moved to Mirinae (see p. 27) in Anseong, Gyeonggi-do Province. Today, the Armed Forces Central Church as the Cathedral of the Military Ordinariate in Korea is located in Waegogae. INFORMATION

Danggogae Martyrs' Shrine Following Seosomun-bakk Negeori and Saenamteo, Danggogae is a holy site that produced the third largest number of Catholic saints. In 1840, ten Christians were martyred, and among them were three mothers with young children. One of the three mothers was Mary Yi Seong-rye, the wife of St. Francis Choe Kyong-hwan (1805–1839) and mother of Father Thomas Choe Yang-eop (1821–1861). Although situated amidst high-rises of the bustling city of Seoul, its traditional hanok (traditional Korean house)-style and mud-walled architecture reflects the comfort of a hometown and the warmth of a caring mother. Gusan Shrine Gusan, which literally translates to “Turtle Mountain,” was named so because it was said to look like a turtle. Located in Hanam, Gyeonggi-do Province, the shrine is crowded by people on pilgrimage due to its proximity to Seoul. This is the hometown of St . Anthony Kim Seong-u (1795–1841), and he was also buried here. The village is one of the most well-preserved faith communities in Korea. Due to the serene statue of the Virgin Mary and its beautiful surroundings, the shrine has welcomed many visitors, and it has been in various Korean dramas, commercials and movies.

Mirinae Shrine Located in Anseong, Gyeonggido, this is the place where the tomb of St. Andrew Kim Daegeon (1821–1846) is located. Many Christians came to Mirinae to escape religious persecutions, and at night, when the houses would light up, the village was said to look like the Milky Way, thus being named Mirinae (the Korean word for “Milky Way”). It offers a pilgrimage program that visits various sites including the tomb and chapel of St. Andrew Kim Dae-geon, a memorial church constructed in honor of the 103 martyr saints, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the cemetery of the unknown martyrs. CATHOLIC MARTYRDOM SITES IN SUWON HWASEONG FORTRESS AND NAMHANSANSEONG FORTRESS, UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES

Hwaseong Fortress

Hwaseong Fortress and Namhansanseong Fortress, located in Gyeonggi-do Province, have been recognized by UNESCO for their historical significance, and thus listed as UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites. The development in fortress construction techniques is well embodied in the two fortresses. They were planned and built to serve as provincial capitals of the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910) in case of an emergency. Both sites are also martyrdom sites where many Christians were martyred during the persecutions.

Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon is a martyrdom site where 78 Christians were martyred during the 1866 Byeongin Namhansanseong Fortress Persecution. The execution was carried out at Paldalmun (the southern gate) and Janganmun (the northern gate), near today’s Buksudong Catholic Church. Namhansanseong Fortress is also a martyrdom site where about 300 Christians were tortured to death during the Sinyu, Gihae, and Byeongin Persecutions. Corpses of the martyrs were dumped at Sigumun Gate of Namhansanseong Fortress. Sigumun literally means “corpse gate.”

Pungsuwon Shrine Pungsuwon was where a faith community was formed by many Christians escaping the 1866 Byeongin Persecution and the 1871 Sinmiyangyo (U.S. Expedition to Korea). The Pungsuwon Parish was established by Bishop Blanc, Vicar Apostolic of Korea in 1888, and today’s Pungsuwon Catholic Church was completed by a Korean priest (Father Jeong Gyu-ha, 1863–1943) in 1907. The church was the first western-style brick building in Gangwondo Province, and was designated Gangwon-do Province’s Local Cultural Property No. 69. Today, the old rectory is being used as an exhibit hall. The well-preserved brick and mortar building is also Registered Cultural Heritage No. 163. Pungsuwon produced more than 30 priests and except during the Korean War (1950–1953), it has hosted the Eucharistic Congress every year since its first congress in 1920. The red-brick walls and pointy four-story bell tower have often been featured in movies and TV shows. INFORMATION

Baeron Shrine The village was named so, because it was said that the valley where the village is seated looked like the bottom of a boat (“bae” means boat in Korean). Baeron was where a faith community was formed by Christians fleeing from the persecution. This is a place where a Christian named Alexius Hwang Sa-yeong (1775–1801) dwelled in an underground tunnel and wrote “Baekseo” (Silk Letter, the Letter of Alexius Hwang to the Bishop of Beijing) concerning the situation of the Catholic Church in Korea in 1801, but he was captured and martyred the same year. Baeron is also a historic place where St. Joseph’s seminary, the first Korean seminary, was founded in 1855, but it was eventually closed. The tomb of Father Tomas Choe Yang-eop (1821–1861), the second Korean Catholic priest, and the Martyr Hwang Sa-yeong’s Memorial Tower can be seen at Baeron Shrine. INFORMATION

Nabawi Catholic Church (Iksan)

Nabawi Catholic Church is the oldest Catholic Church in the Jeolla-do provinces. The Nabawi region is where Fr. Andrew Kim Dae-geon (1821–1846), the first Korean priest to be ordained in Shanghai, along with Bishop Ferréol (1808–1853) and Fr. Antoine Daveluy (1818–1866) first set foot in Korea. To commemorate Fr. Kim’s return, Fr. Vermorel (1860–1937) built a church, which was completed in 1906. The Church (Historic Site No. 318) is a wooden hanok-style building with giwa (roof tiles), the corridor in particular reflects Korea’s unique architectural beauty. On the top of Hwasan Mountain, where Nabawi Catholic Church is situated, stands the Martyrdom Memorial Tower of Fr. Kim Dae-geon, which was built in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Fr. Kim’s martyrdom.

Naju Martyrs’ Shrine Naju Martyrs’ Shrine is where the martyrs’ memorial chapel built in honor of Peter Yi Chun-hwa (1807–1839) who was martyred during the Gihae Persecution (1839), and Paul Kang Yeongwon (1822–1872), Andrew Yu Chi-seong (1825–1872) and Paul Yu Mun-bo (1822–1871), who were martyred during the 1866 Byeongin Persecution in Naju. At the entrance of the chapel are a huge 60-ton stone and a coffin-shaped altar, and the interior is closed off on all four sides with the top open. Inside the chapel is a memorial hall that exhibits the typewriter, prayer books, a cross, a ciborium and vestments used by Archbishop Harold Henry William (1909–1976), the first pastor of the Naju parish, during his pastoral service. The hanok (traditional Korean house)-style building that served as the first principal house of the Caritas Sisters of Jesus, who took the lead in evangelization through education, medical services and other charity work, has been restored and exhibits belongings of the Sisters who lived and worked there at that time. Nearby is the Muhakdang Martyrdom site (today, it is the garden of Naju Elementary School) where many Christians were martyred. Ten cornerstones, assumed to be those of Muhakdang, had been left untouched there for almost 130 years, but were moved to the Naju Catholic Church in 2001 to symbolize and represent Muhakdang. GYEONGSANGBUK-DO PROVINCE

Namsan-dong Catholic Town (Daegu) The Catholic Town in Namsan-dong, Daegu has a history of over 100 years. It is the birthplace of Catholicism in Daegu, and the St. Justin Campus of the Catholic University of Daegu, the Roman Catholic Archdiocesan Curia of Daegu, the clergy’s graveyard, Seongmodang (Tangible Cultural Property No. 29), Gyesan Cathedral (Historic Site No. 290) and a convent of the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres are all located in the Catholic Town. Gyesan Cathedral The French-style red-brick buildings amid thick forests attract tourists and pilgrims to the town. Specially worth seeing is Seongmodang, which was modeled after the Grotto of Massabielle in Lourdes, France and was constructed in 1918. The front steps of Seongmodang are always crowded with prayers.

Hanti Martyrs’ Shrine Hanti is a remote village located in Deukmyeong-ri, Dongmyeong-myeon, Chilgokgun, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, 600 meters above sea level. It is assumed that after the Eulhae Persecution (1815) and Jeonghae Persecution (1827), families of imprisoned Christians began to settle in this area. In 1860, after the end of the Gyeongsin Persecution, it became a large Christian village, but unfortunately the Christians of the village had to go through the 1866 Byeongin Persecution. Today, the shrine houses the cemetery of the unknown martyrs, a retreat house, a spiritual house for the major seminary, a chapel for pilgrims and more. INFORMATION
