Confucianism. The ideology treasured loyalty, filial duties, and refined manners. Confucian teachings dictate the thoughts and actions of Koreans to this day. This was the era when Korea's unique alphabet was made. It is also notable that Seoul was designated as Joseon's capital. Seoul has served the nation for 600 years as Korea's political, economical, social, and cultural center. Old palaces, traditional city gates, and skyscrapers stand side-by-side in the city. Seoul is now a city that attracts millions of tourists from all over the world.

1. Everyday Basic Manners Widely praised as “the country of courteous people in the East” among the Chinese people in the past, Korea has maintained a long tradition of regarding everyday etiquette as a key for a decent, harmonious familial and communal life. The strong influence of Confucianism upon the Korean society established filial piety as one of the most highly admired virtues in life, and according to the Korean custom the first male child is responsible for taking care of his parents throughout his life. Korean people also tend to regard the harmony of their community more important than the happiness of a family member. They also developed a complex hierarchy of linguistic expressions designed to reveal a difference in age or social status between those engaged in conversation. The honorific expressions are used between people who meet with each other for 24 / Guide to Living in Korea 2013

Tips for Driving in Korea

1. Bus Lanes Bus lanes, reserved for the exclusive use of authorized buses, are special travel lanes created to speed and promote the flow of bus traffic. To avoid obstructing the traffic of other types of vehicles, on highways, bus lanes are in the middle of a road, and in regular roads, at the outer side of a road. Although only buses meeting certain conditions are authorized to use bus lanes, in some cases, other vehicles with multiple passengers may be allowed to use them as well. An unauthorized vehicle, caught driving in a bus lane, is fined. See the list of bus lane-authorized vehicle below: Bus lane-authorized vehicles Road type

160 / Guide to Living in Korea 2013

May 10 Seokkatanshin-il (Buddha's Birthday) In Korea the birthday of Buddha is celebrated according to the Lunisolar calendar. This day is called 석 가탄신일 (Seokga tansinil), meaning “the day of Buddha’s birth” or 부처님 오신 날 (Bucheonim osin nal) meaning “the day when Buddha arrived.” Lotus lanterns cover the entire temple throughout the month which are often flooded down the street. On the day of Buddha's birth, many temples provide free meals and tea to all visitors. Sanchae bibimbap or steamed rice with assorted wild vegetables, is often provided for breakfast and lunch. June 6 Hyeonchung-il (Memorial Day) June 6 denotes the day set aside for citizens to remember those who died for their country. Civilians and soldiers alike are honored in ceremonies held throughout the country, especially at Seoul National Cemetery. August 15 Gwangbok-jeol (Liberation Day) With the official surrender of Japan to the Allied Forces on August 15, 1945, the 35-year colonization of Korea by the Japanese came to an end. August 15, 1948 also marks the establishment of the Republic of Korea. Seotember 12 Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving Day) On this day Koreans make offerings of grain and fruit from the first harvest of the year to their ancestors. Along with Lunar New Year's, it's Korea's biggest holiday when family members who live scattered in distant places get together for a reunion. Chuseok is August 15th according to the lunar calendar. October 3 Gaecheon-jeol (Foundation Day) According to legend, the god-king Tan-gun founded the Choson Kingdom in 2333 B.C. This day fills citizens with nationalistic pride over the 4,000 year history of Korea. December 25 Seongtan-jeol (Christmas) Although not yet as commercialized as Christmas in America, the large number of Korean Christians ensure that this is a time of celebration. More and more businesses have begun putting up decorations and selling Western style Christmas cards. Due to its proximity to the end of the year, many Koreans prefer to give New Year gifts instead of Christmas gifts.
