Exploring Community Syntax and Embedded Assets Northeast Central Durham, NC | College Park, Raleigh, NC
Systemic and serial community displacement perpetuate deep rooted cycles of financial and social inequity. Within the system of complex forces driving displacement, data concerning any number of quantifiable metrics is used to justify the continued practice of culpable ignorance and racism. “Exploration of Community Syntax and Embedded Assets documents a semester of evolving explorations into the communities of Northeast Central Durham and College Park. Through the continued pursuit of these ideas, this work will focus on the creation of a data-based community-driven tool for communities to create, document, and leverage a more holistic representation of their value.

Since 1996, the City of Raleigh has been implementing various stages of an intensive redevelopment plan for College Park. The City now owns 1/3 of the property within the neighborhood. Collectively, the lots as-is hold a potential resale value of approximately $14 million dollars.
Another 1/3 of the property in College Park is owned by non-residents. These are individuals or corporations who own property and do not live in the neighborhood or the surrounding neighborhoods. The non-resident owned property in College Park contributes to many drivers of displacement. The lots as-is are valued at approximately $ 16 million dollars.
EDENTON ST. AND NEW BERN AVE. COLLEGE PARK, RALEIGH, NC Each of the following maps explores a framework for structuring place-based information through the targeted exploration of a mixed-use commercial streetscape. The first map combines a perspective panorama and an overhead view of each of the 5 blocks studied along Edenton St. and New Bern Ave. The second map decontextualises individuals documented by Google Streetview within each of the 5 blocks.
The third map looks mpre specifcially at the past 6 years of development of the Lobos Tire and Auto Repair property along E. Edenton St. The fourth map again examines people captured by Google Streetview but along each of the East/West oriented streets in the College Park neighborhood. Collectively, these visual representations begin to define qualities and quantities of the area, define how the space is used, how it has changed over time, how it
facilitates culture, and how components of the space begin to interact. This particular streetscape is slated for redevelopment into higher density mixed-use commercial. Visual and narrative doumentation of actual human use better represents the value of public space. Creating data from that qualititative information will strengthen the ability of concerned citizens to provide measurable statistics supporting inclusive quality development.
LOBOS TIRE AND AUTO SERVICE 1225 E. EDENTON ST. RALEIGH, NC Lobos Tire and Auto Service is located at 1225 E. Edenton St. between N. Pettigrew St. and St. Augustine St. on the south edge of College Park in Raleigh, NC. I began researching the property because it is the first street-facing structure in the 5 block stretch on the north side of E. Edenton St. examined in this map series. Beginning with aerial imagery over time, this map begins to explore the role Lobos has played in the development of College Park. Lobos Tire and Auto, as the building-front clearly reads, is often referred to in
online and commerical listing as “Lobo” Tire and Auto, which has received a 4.9 out of 5 star review on Google. The Better Business Bureau reports a single complaint from an individual claiming that his car was hit by an under-age driver who did not have her permit on her but was allowed to leave the Lobos property driving one of their courtesy cars and was involved in the accident. The complaint has since been resolved. Lobos is owned by Nabeg Barakat. The Barakat family operates several small

businesses in the area and are widely regarded as compassionate and active members of the Triangle. Nabeg Barakat is the uncle-in-law of former sophomore NCSU Architecture student, Razan Abu-Salha, one of three muslim students shot to death in Chapel Hill last year. I stopped work on the map when I made that association and I only include it here as an example of the powerful connections that even the smallest piece of information can make.
