New Mexico State University Center for the Arts Las Cruces, New Mexico Kohler Ronan Consulting Engineers collaborated closely with architects and the University’s Office of Facilities Planning & Construction to make this new arts venue exceed expectations. The 60,000 sq. ft. space includes a theater, dressing rooms, art gallery, studios, and classrooms for dance, music, performing, visual, and digital arts. The modern facility is a fitting addition to NMSU and the City of Las Cruces, both of which are rich in history and the designs of the American Southwest. Our team designed comprehensive MEP/FP engineering systems in keeping with the Governor’s recent mandate requiring that the statefunded arts facility deliver an energy performance standard equal to one half the average energy consumption for that building type, as defined by the US Department of Energy. Systems and strategies employed to achieve this challenging energy goal included: radiant heating and cooling, energy recovery, and a 20kw photovoltaic array.
