LOST SPACES : A Study To Identify And Analyse These Lost Spaces In Vadodara City Fabric Cities are growing and developing rapidly and this has its own consequences on the urban fabric of the city itself. Due to this constant evolution and transformation that the city undergoes within itself, it results in formation of places and non-places (lost spaces) as their by products. This has now become an urban spatial design issue. During this transformation, many patches of land are generated with no specific countless identity, function or purpose, which can be termed as lost spaces. - What are lost spaces? - What are the reasons that lead to the formation of these lost spaces in the city fabric? - What kind and types of lost spaces are present in the Indian contemporary cities? - What are the characteristic of these lost spaces? - How these identified lost spaces can re-activated and re-developed? The study refers “Finding Lost Spaces” by Roger Trancik in 1986, as a base study to understand the writers concept of lost spaces. Further the study investigates what these lost spaces are when associated with Indian contemporary cities.

(categories)
Lost spaces are visible and dwell in various scales and categories in the city. They range from large public zones to streets and even to the building spaces. These zones will consist different Lost spaces that dwell in the urban cities, which are inactive, unused and dead. Here the Lost spaces are classify according to the scale of their existence. There are 3 main categories, namely the cityscapes, the community scape and the street-scape. LOCATION
Consists of analysis carried out for every individual identified examples in this study. These analysis will help us to know the characteristics and quality of lost spaces present in the growing city with the help of different parameters of analysis generated. The attributes are broadly the physical and spatial, as the linkages, activities, usage image and ownership. These different parameters will help to understand the lost spaces, their formation, their characteristics, their image and the way they affect the city as a whole.
Linkages
- No specific activities take place, just used for transit
Linkages
- Used to cross the railway line
- Not convenient for pedestrian, as no provision for walking - Used to cross the railway lines

- Long waste patch of space underneath - Sensed as separation from its surrounding while moving
Desolate stretch - lost in transit
- Dark void with the sense of isolation from the surrounding - Perceived as a missing link, a gap in the transit
Phenomenological cave - lost in transit
- No specific activities take place -Used only for parking around and to throw waste
Linkages
- Poorly seating into the context, not developed
Barren island- lost in space
- Used only to park vehicles, such large space assigned for an activity only - No other human activities happen here - Disconnects the transit and structure, by acting as a gap in-between
- Perceived as an automobile forest, dead and deteriorate
Automobile forest - lost in margins and space
- Few roadside stalls are installed, rest no activity happens - As the road has very less functioning edges attached, the usage is minimum - Used only for transit - Due to the high wall on one side, the connection with other side disconnects

Learnings “Lostness is a phase in the life span of any space in the city” Just as spaces are born, they grow and develop to reach their prime stage, in these process they are given definitions and characteristics of physical form to serve a specific activities. Spaces also reach a stage where they lose their meaning and purpose of existence, the reasons behind it being lost or for being inactive and dead or for worst condition may be many. This replace character and down fall of the space is known as lost space stage.

Image showing how the space can be used for interactive activities, which can help the lost space to be active again and contribute to the surrounding.
Diagram representing lostness as the phase in life of any space.
“Addition of new spaces takes place without considering the existing surrounding conditions and situations, which make the existing constantly getting obsolete and dead” The lost spaces are by-product of rapid development and growth of the city. As the changes in the contemporary cities take place at comparatively exaggerated rate. The fast and rapid growth in science and technology, demand the urban spaces to adjust with its speed speedily. The spaces have their own speed of development and growth, some rapidly progress, while some are left behind, forming undeveloped, inactive islands of voids.
“Transformation and alteration with the lack of integration into the surrounding and the lack of thought of its every detail case the space active or inactive” Image showing how the edge stays dead and inactive.
Image showing how the space is not being used and stay dead and inactive and present day
Image showing how the edge as well as the compound wall itself can be used in-order to make the space live and active.
Image showing how the space can be used for temporary exhibitions and for pavilions.
Before introducing or designing a new system over the existing one, a deep integration and understanding method should be figured out in order to prevent the production of such inactive, waste and dead spaces in developing urban city context. As the urban developing process today treats the building as an isolated object sited in the landscape. Not as a part of the large fabric of streets, squares and open spaces.
“In today’s rapid developing and growing cities, where each small piece of land is getting expensive day by day; the focus should be on the unused and obsolete spaces, to re-use, re-function and re-design them according to the growing demand for urban public spaces in our cities”

Bungalow Interior - Akota, Vadodara An interior project assigned for a small entity of a huge bungalow settled in a residential area name Akota, Vadodara. The approach of designing the space was as a whole together and not with separately designed elements individually, considering the room as a one entity. Even the material palette was decided and selected as a whole picture, all together. Bright colors are used in order to perceive the space lighten, more open and more spacious. Also platform bed was designed with sleek edges and minimal details for the same. Neoclassical elements and non-complex joineries were used to showcase simplicity and decency, as the room was to be designed for grandparents.

Laboratory - Nandesari Estate
A redesigning project for an existing laboratory for Hari Orgo. Chemicals Ltd. in an industrial estate name Nandesari, Vadodara. The project deal to reshape the existing space to a lab. with modern furniture and comfortable working environment for around 35 staff members. Area of 1700sq. ft. was to be designed along with the outside envelope of the structure, with a separate entry. Light weight independent system of construction was adapted, without disturbing the existing structure. Challenge was to develop material palette which don’t react to chemicals. Hence used thick sections of metals which are epoxy painted, FRP (fiber-reinforced plastic) sections, Glass, Stone slabs and Anodized aluminium sections.

Architecture + Product design studio Producture Studio is a newly emerging design studio founded by myself with my colleague. Our studio is mainly indulged into generating innovative, designer and functional products. We believe in the concept that everything around us can be re-imagined and re-designed for a better tomorrow. Each new design should be a step into better direction. We’re curious and creative people, who always search for various approaches, new combinations and maximum possibilities. We are recently experimenting “PAPER-TUBES” as a primary material for our luminaire series, to its maximum alterations possible. Each design has its own unique attributes and resolved details to make it more user friendly and appealing. We experiment, we discuss, we criticize, we examine, we research and we come up to a best creative design possible.
THINK and THROW Do we really think before we dispose? Here is an initiative of re-cycling paper-tubes into designer luminaries

The competition was about to design a cable stayed bridge with certain limitations, situations, material and sizes provided. Multiple load transferring diagrams and designs were explored. As it being a cable stayed Y bridge ROEHT pylon and cables plays a vital role. When load is given on the deck, transfers to the cable, then to pylons and the purpose of the pylon is to support the cable while transfer the forces to the base. Total weight of the bridge was less than 1kg, constructed using candy sticks and treads. It bared 13.88 kg of load before showing deformation, which was almost 14 times to its weight. Designed a perfect structurally balanced mechanism to transfer the load was achieved. Received judges choice award for the same.

The competition was about to design an interactive object as we all are trapped in our houses, during this pandemic. Attempt to develop a piece of furniture which shares the feeling somewhere between furniture and playground, with also restriction of space keeping in mind (deployable). A simple deployable table with a cutout of swing panel which hangs from the table top. The swing piece seamlessly integrates to the table top back, as a clean working surface. The furniture is simple and formal, which is dramatically contrast by its hidden feature that brings an element of nostalgic and playfulness into the space. Typology of the object encourage the playful participation in both physical as well as mental interaction of the user. It can be placed anywhere in one’s confined space (balcony, porch, garden, room, terrace easily.
The competition was to design an innovative public furniture for the urban spaces, to used in pandemic times. Conceptual design for public seatings that brings people together at public spaces, at the same time keeps them at safe distance away from each other. - Light in weight - Visual connection with surrounding and people - Conceal pods helps to ensure safety - Transparent shield allows an uninterrupted full view 360° - Module system of pods can help to adapt all kinds of urban spaces - Comfort and relaxed seating 800mm diameter - The shape allows to drain water easily - Fully hygienic, safe, secure and ventilated - Further the pods can be inter-connected by audio/video facility.
