KALEIDOSCOPE

An art museum is a place that carries the meaning of art, and it can be a work of art in itself. Compared with most white art galleries, contemporary art galleries need more possibilities of arts exhibition and interaction. This project introduces kaleidoscope design to change the way people perceive artworks, increase the interaction between visitors and exhibits, and encourage people to think more about exhibits

SITE PLAN The site is located in the centre of the art precinct. The project intends to activate the vitality of the art precedent by using the 300-meter long promenade to connect the NGV garden and street network of the city. There is a height difference of 8m between the roads, which could be eliminated through the design of the walkway and the design of the new building.

Left-over Space of Melbourne

The purpose of this project is to find a kind of urban left-over space with common characteristics in the city, and to improve the quality of the space and the value of the space by designing a prototyping artefact. Then, based on the prototype of the first generation, an update idea continues among proposed fifty years later. The left-over space selected for this project is the vertical horizontal space in the public areas, such as the space above the bus platform and the space above the electrical box equipment. This kind of space has the potential to increase the capacity of city, and can explore a entirely new solutions to the problem of urban congestion.

IMMATERIAL BRUTALISM

This project is to achieve an extension of real materiality in virtual. In other word, it is not to reproduce the experience of texture in reality through an artificial digital medium, but to creat a pure atmosphere of materiality that affecr people's feelings and emotions. As Slavoj Zizek said in the Reality of the Virtual, the virtually is not simply means reproduce the experience we had in reality but to generate a real effect that produce something not fully exist in real. So from this perspective, the value of spatial materiality in virtual is to liberate the spiritual boundary of material cognition which conveys a pure expression of emotion and atmosphere in a space.

HIGH-RISE OFFICE BUILDING

We want to design environmental friendly skycrapper to fit the site. From the beginning of the design, we focus on three points: the plan's shape, the location of the mechanical floor and the height of the podium and the crown. When we do the site research and scaling, we find that most of the buildings near the site are in a square or rectangle shape. So we decide to make rectangle plans and core, which are most effecient and suitable for the site. Then the grid and rooms of different functions are all arranged in that shape. The lifts in the core change fewer from low rise to sky rise. To bring some unique characteristics to our building, we cut one of the edges of some floor plates by one column distance shorter to form a terrace for shared balconys and planting. It is reasonable because the language of terrace could also be seen in the surrounding buildings. The terrace enables the building to become smaller as the lift core is also the smallest on the top to reach an average FPE requirement. The rooms also get more directional sunlight because of the terrace. Each mechanical floor is put on the last layer before getting smaller. Without putting heavy concrete, we want to make the mechanical floor transparent to be clearly recognized and decorated with plants. The mechanical floors are considered double height of the typical floor so that they could be put heavy structure in to connect the floors. Through the investigation we got that more people come across the Exhibition Street, so out main entrance is put there. The podium is considered to be a larger rectangle shape to fit the tower. The entrance lobby is twenty meters high without floor plates, and there is a large glass glazing canopy to be supported by the truss and columns outside the entry door. It will take people to walk a long way to enter the building. The podium is transparent with glazing facade and cable nets which could make the building look lighter and leave more area for the floor. The crown is designed for a open area with steel truss only. It is used as a roof garden responding to the terrace.

基地分析 Site Analysis

The skyscraper is 268m high and has 54 floors. It uses a frame structure. The mechanical layer is set on the 10th, 30th and 50th floors. This structure can ensure that the office building is resistant to earthquakes and hurricanes in Melbourne. The building uses reinforced concrete materials. There are four sizes of columns, namely 1200 x 1200m, 900 x 900m, 750 x 750m, 600 x 600m. The wall thickness of the core tube varies from 450mm to 600mm and decreases with the increase of the storey height. There are two semi-private spaces in the podium part, which also serves as a structural conversion layer, thereby reducing the waste of materials. As can be seen from the overall facade of the building, the building has achieved two inward contractions, each contracting 6750m inward. This is to harmonize the language of skyscrapers and surrounding buildings. 61

LIBRARY PERMEABILITY

The site is located on an iconic hill, along the central axis of the university. Addressing the landscape of the site, the design applies symmetrical form, which is porous and permeable, allowing the beautiful view to be seen through the building interior.
