Personal Statement

I am eager to apply for the MSc Architectural & Urban Design programme at The University of Edinburgh.

I was first drawn to architecture because I love art, math, and physics, and architecture cleverly combines these three passions. During my undergraduate years, I studied architecture, which gave me a new outlook on life. I started to perceive architecture as a distinct language that delves deeply into the material world and human culture to unveil secrets that are hidden from plain sight. From this angle, architecture developed into a greater comprehension of the essence of existence, beyond its original function as the design of spaces. It changed the way I thought about architecture and made it into a tool for deciphering the complexities of the material world and the deep facets of human civilization.

I committed to carefully balancing creative aesthetics, the designer’s unique vision, and the normative representation of structural composition throughout my undergraduate studies in order to build a profound grasp of architecture. I understand that attempts at architecture have aspired to the sublime over the course of succeeding centuries. However, because human nature is inherently limited, these endeavors are often hampered by the effects of culture, location, time, and social mores, forcing the majority to direct their ambitions toward the search for beauty. However, this shouldn’t be interpreted as a disincentive because the basis of human civilization is the never-ending quest to surpass boundaries. My goal as an architect is to meaningfully advance humanity’s pursuit of beauty while navigating the shifting tides of contemporary culture. I discovered that the goals of our ancestors’ architecture were all oriented toward the sublime when reading History of Foreign Architecture. However, the common accomplishment stayed limited to beauty since the designer's intention is always constrained by the constraints of location, time, culture, and society. In spite of these limitations, architects must work tirelessly to advance architecture to the highest levels of the most utopian ambitions.

Edinburgh holds a unique and cherished place in my heart, situated amidst picturesque hills and the sea, boasting an abundance of architectural marvels and cultural landscapes. It stands as the enchanting birthplace of a fantastical realm. The medieval architecture, combined with the ethereal mist that often blankets the city, creates an ambiance where one feels almost within reach of the most profound beauty. To study in such a captivating city is undeniably a privileged experience. The architectural curriculum in Edinburgh delves into Architectural History & Theory, Conservation, and Landscape Architecture. Additionally, my interest is piqued by the Frictions series within the ESALA Public Lecture Series. As an aspiring architect, I am profoundly intrigued by the swift urbanization processes and the escalating environmental challenges. Through my academic journey at the University of

Edinburgh, I aspire to engage in comprehensive contemplation and research on these critical issues, ultimately striving to formulate solutions.

I aim to contribute distinctive insights and practical experiences to the evolution of future cities.

I comprehend that throughout successive generations, architectural endeavors have ardently aspired to attain the sublime. Nonetheless, owing to the inherent constraints of humanity, these pursuits are frequently circumscribed by the influences of culture, geography, era, and societal norms, compelling the majority to channel their aspirations toward the pursuit of beauty. Nevertheless, this should not be perceived as a deterrent, for the quintessence of human civilization resides in the ceaseless pursuit of transcending predefined limits. My architectural objective is to substantively contribute to humanity’s quest for beauty, navigating within the dynamic currents of the zeitgeist.

The contemporary epoch relentlessly pursues a new mix and match, seeking new styles in the fusion of establishment and disruption. Our educational ethos champions critical ratiocination, extolling the virtue of inquiry over dogmatic adherence to any singular ideology, as we persist in our quest for the most profound verities. Postmodernism serves as our pedagogical guidepost, instilling a penchant for skepticism that challenges the hegemonic constructs perpetuated by modernism, prompting a multifaceted dismantling of its foundations. The adage “A hundred schools of thought contend” epitomizes the hallmark of our architectural zeitgeist. The epoch of metamorphosis concurrently unfolds as an era of unprecedented opportunities, wherein the luminosity of the moon and stars perseveres even amidst the encroaching darkness. In the contemporary milieu, a plethora of prospects and trajectories unfurl, and I hope to continue exploring the possibilities of the unknown in the future.

The site is located in the old city area of Qingdao, characterized by a rich mixture of architectural forms including old resid ential communities, courtyard houses, and historical preserved buildings. Courtyard houses, known as "liyuan" in Chinese, are a distinctive regiona traditional residential architectural form in Qingdao, combining Western-style mansions with traditional Chinese courtyard houses. In the 1 920s and 1930s, courtyard houses were widely prevalent among the middle and lower-class residents of Qingdao, serving as their dwellings.

In this proposal, we explore how to communicate the transformation of old cities and the concepts of future cities to new audie nces through digital media. We extract task scenarios from real-world research and integrate narrative and architectural theory into the structure of digital media. Specifically, designers will establish a model repository, and citizens will design and evaluate proposals through AR glasses a nd apps. The government will review whether the proposals from citizens, which have received the most likes on the app, are fea sible. If feasible, designers will further refine the proposals, which will then be handed over to the construction team for implementation.

The project aims to redefine the urban-suburban landscape in developing countries by constructing a model that adapts to the uncertainties of suburban environmental planning, facilitating sustainable development. Taking the eastern shore of Shao Hai Lake in Jiaozhou, Shandong Province, Qingdao, as a case study, the suburban area currently faces challenges such as rural depopulation, industrial migration, water pollution, and land loss in the post-production context. Employing a strip strategy, the project responds to the specificity of the built environment and the uncertainty of processes, utilizing 100m/80m/50m strips as the basis. Through dimensions, orientations, architectural distribution, systemic cycles, connection mutations, landscape interventions, etc., an ideal sustainable productive spatial system is constructed, developing water treatment and waste management systems to establish a healthy relationship between people and the land.

SURVEY OF THE PROVINCE AND CITY WHERE THE SITE IS LOCATED

Through the analysis of data on the urbanization rates of registered and permanent populations, the proportion of GDP contributed by different industries, and the sources of underground pollution in urban and rural areas of Shandong Province, as well as research on the historical changes and industrial distribution in the vicinity of the site, it was found that since 1949, the overall proportion of urban population in China has increased from 5% to over 50%. This rapid rise can be attributed to the reforms initiated in 1978, which saw a significant migration of labor force to urban areas for livelihood and work opportunities. Since the implementation of new policies in 2011, urban factories have gradually relocated to suburban areas, leading to a drastic reduction in agricultural land in the suburbs and an expansion of factory areas. Inadequate industrial treatment has exacerbated water pollution in the surrounding areas. The lifestyle of indigenous people has undergone changes, and the phenomenon of land loss in the context of post-productionism has become typical.

The utilization of system cycles mainly involves water, materials, energy, and information. Specialized structures such as fact ories, carpentry workshops, exhibition centers, logistics hubs, worker dormitories, residential buildings, farmland, water treatment c enters, markets, waste treatment facilities, biogas digesters, livestock husbandry, fisheries, and markets are set up to harness these cycles. By analyzing their intrinsic connections, they are placed within various layers of strips. This brings benefits to the communit y including clean land, fresh agricultural products, healthy residents, regenerated funds, community cohesion, and sustainable development.

Create factory, residential, education-commercial, woodworking workshop, planting, and functional mutation strips, with water treatment facilities integrated into the strips. Specialized structures within the strips include farmland, animal husbandry, water treatment centers, markets, parks, and logistics, as indicated in the relationship diagram.

The strips are divided into 100 meters, 80 meters, and 50 meters. The 100-meter strip is for residential and factory use, the 80-meter strip for woodworking workshops and commercial culture, and the 50-meter strip for residential and agricultural purposes. Strips can be freely combined to accommodate architectural specificity and process uncertainty, making the concept replicable.

Firstly, at the first level of logic, the strip strategy is proposed – the procedural segmentation of surfaces and the combinat ion of these surfaces. Within the repetitive structure of strips, the maximum mutation within and between strips is achieved by injecting va rious procedural events. For example, the arrangement of residential strips is based on waste treatment events. Secondly, at the second level of logic, the overall planning of the suburban belt is based on the concept of strip strategy, centered around two main vertical corridors (n amely, tree-lined avenues and long corridors), and multiple connections are established between the vertical corridors and the strips in the over all structure. Thirdly, at the third level of logic, to better adapt to the uncertainty of processes, an outer circle of water is established. The "suburban belt" engages in multidimensional and continuous exchanges with the surrounding water through each strip, such as waterfront pl atforms, aquaculture, drainage outlets, and intake ports. Fourthly, at the fourth level of logic, edible landscape organization is impla nted onto the procedural events at the first level. Natural elements are combined using geometry (triangular, linear), perspectives (north-so uth, east-west directions), and interweaving (within strips, between strips). When these layers are combined, they construct an ideal sustaina ble productive spatial system – the suburban belt, representing a conceptual model of suburban area development through experimental explorati on.

SEWAGE TREATMENT CENTER

CITY PIPES AND CISTERNS

The water treatment center is placed underground within the strips, such as the industrial strip, where industrial wastewater, domestic sewage from worker dormitories, and agricultural wastewater from farmland are collected and treated together in corresponding primary sedimentation tanks. Subsequently, the treated water enters industrial-grade water treatment facilities before being stored in reservoirs or directed into urban pipelines. This system aims to mitigate water pollution and safeguard the health of aquatic ecosystems. Additionally, it provides a reliable water source to support forestry and agriculture, promoting the development of a healthy water environment for the community.

Fall2023 YAC Art museum

The theme of YAC architecture competition ART MUSEUM is to create an art museum among the terraced fields of Weihai, Shandong Province, to commemorate the local culture and artistic expression. In fact, this overlaps with China's emphasis on "rural construction" in recent years.

In the final plan, I responded to each of the structural dilemmas of the countryside that I discovered during my research, and they were reflected as vivid individual narratives, where spiritual needs that had been neglected in the past became abundant. The narrative logic of the village Art Museum shows the characteristics of "individuality" and "local knowledge" in a small range, and its expression is related to the concrete things in Rushan. The design responds to the terraced fields, the river, the wilderness and the inherent elements of the countryside and farmers, emphasizing the local and national character.

In the process of rapid social development, the concept of form subordinating to function proposed by traditional modernism is constantly broken. In today's design context, designers do not follow a clear task book to complete a design step by step, even if there is a clear design demand, how to define the demand itself is worthy of argument. In Nishizawa's Toshima Art Museum, the form and function of the building are in the middle of a kind of ambiguity, and this ambiguity is also the achievement of the b uilding. This project adopts an engineering-centric approach to cultivate the aesthetic appeal of structures. It achieves this by seamle ssly integrating structural contradictions, such as tension and pressure, entity and void, construction and node. Through innovative design methodologies, the project delves into the concept of ambiguity, leveraging deformation as a means to explore new realms of architectural expression.

In modern design, designers embrace ambiguity, reshaping design requirements and merging form with function. This project stands as a prime example, showcasing how ambiguity can be harnessed as a natural success, seamlessly blending form and function in a dynamic and sophisticated approach.

The first level serves as a drivable bridge, while the second level forms a circular space that can be enclosed. Interspersed within are some non-functional small spaces, with a structurally strong space at the top. The entire bridge exists between a state of boundary and boundlessness. TOP
