a lofted forest

floating above the plate of Bologna Program - Student Center Site - Bologna, Italy Architecture Design Studio VI//2017 Instructor - Aysen Savas,Arzu Gonenc Sorguc

Bologna, Italy, is one of the most well preseved medieval town in the world. The definition of preserving here does not only means leaving as it is but also, live with it. Bologna is breathing city, streets and piazzas are full of university students and elders, with their glass of Italian wine. My general intension was re bringing the green band, a tree-forest, which was planned in 1949. Also, burying most of the programs, I would like to introduce lightweightness to the historical site, so that they could feel the leaves, branches, and trunks of the trees instead of massive structure. On the underground, students would co-exist with the historical fragments which remain under the outher most, last remaining citadel wall. Considering the Bologna as a red “plate”, I designed a lofted green “plate” which is the continuation of the botanic garden, and burying the labratories where historical “plate” sleeps on. Moreover, the richness of the green plate would be formed by the help of students. The varying sizes of the vegetation pot would be placed by students. As an architect, I would not be the only designer of the student center. Researching, studying, sleeping, eating and spending leisure time, students will be designing the green plate and the process of design will never end.

Dancing Dome Digital Design Studio 470//2015 Instructor- Arzu Gonenc Sorguc Program - a dome for aliens.

Dancing Dome is a responsive kinetic space that responds to needs of aliens. The flexibility at digital platform is transfromed into pattern of origami. The relation of the rotating disks defines the movement of dance. Kinetic architecture is a medium of communication between digital and physical, untangible and tangible, invisible and visible.

Clouds among us; light, movement and sound Digital Design Studio 475//2016 Instructor- Arzu Gonenc Sorguc

Light, movement and sound are the three factors that shape the pavilion. The sound analysis and light analysis were made, and movement patterns were kept in record. I defined a pattern to these raw data and the relationship between them. Data-driven design was major method to design this pavilion. Designing is becoming more and more complex task. It’s responsibility never limited to aesthetics. Data-driven design does not leave designer to do nothing but instead it allow us to think about relationship between matters, things that we rarely care about.

the eye; windows of the soul Performative Architecture//2017 Instructor - Ipek Gursel Dino

Instead of responding to sunlight, “the eye” interacts with the human activities of the residents. Throughout the daylight analysis from energyplus and ladybug, the direction of the sunlight can be controlled regadless of the rotation of sun. Therefore, people can re-direct sunlight according to their space usage. Which also, means the exterior of the facade will be shaped by the dynamic activity behind its layer. The typical facade had one way connection, seeing outside from inside, however, “the eye” opens mutual communication by the movement of facade.

Mural Zone; the source of light Site - Ankara, Turkey Architecture Design Studio V//2016 Instructor - Aysen Savas, Arzu Gonenc Sorguc, Funda Bas Butuner

When a building serves as a witness to a bygone era, it is preserved. If a building is considered a suitable prospect for bearing witness, even if it’s very fragile, like Katsura or, an example closer to home, the Eiffel Tower or Beaubourg, it is preserved. The fact that we maintain it, spruce it up, repair it, preserve it in perfect condition, is part of a ritual of conservation. Once a building has reached this dimension of “bearing withness”, it is, at least in a sense, archived, put under seal. -Jean Nouvel, from “the singular objects of architecture”-

Ankara castle, Ulus province, is the oldest settlemet of Ankara, which means the first town of Ankara. Still, Ulus is the center of transportation and has active city life. However, when sun sets, it becomes an unsafe place to visit. Therefore, I propose light poles, that not only lights the mural zone but also the entire city. Where to locate the light furnitures? New grid system from the architecture, which bears the witness of that era. Ulus was in need of communication with neighborhoods and people. What if we generate infinite sustainable energy from geothermal power plant, and distribute the electricity to the entire city to enlight the parks, streets, rivers, highways, parking lots, apartments, pazar, etc. In reponse, the city returns its dynamic data, such as how many people pass in that street, how many car passes, how many people are gathering at the pazar, how many people or animals are at park, to the kinetic light poles of the Mural Zone. Therefore, the light poles of the mural zones are the city monitors. Also, Ulus area will enlightened with the active movement of the city.

BIBLIOPOLE; THE WONDERLAND ARCHED 2014 - Special Jury Award

Program - Bibliopole Site - Ankara, Turkey Architecture Design Studio II//2014 Instructor- Mualla ERKILIC

A visitor’s experience of the bibliopole is interpreted an analogous to the experience of Alice in the tale “Adventures of Alice” when she falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasyworld. The project offers an unexperienced poetic space; a promenade, expressing adventurous pleasure by means of curvilinear ramps going down to the land of bibliopole. The experience offered with this project is sustained by a curvilinear shell covering that is the only image of building on ground level with an elegant entry attracting people to the journey. The journey to undergroudnd levels under the translucent shell structure is made possible by a continuous ramp through all floors that are enveloped with giant bookshelves on outer walls.

EDIBLE EDIFICE Program - Culinary Arts School Site - Ayvalik, Turkey Architecture Design Studio IV//2015 Instructor - Erkin AYTAC, Pelin YONCACI

similarities in between cooking- culinary arts, building - architecture The key element of Aegen cuisine is the olive. Olive tree is like the living history of a city. By spreading its roots horizontally, an olive tree survives in arid conditions. I sincerely hope that this school would be like anolive-tree. Where it grows even in harsh conditions, and leaves traces of moments through time.

Professional Work with Yazgan Design Architecture National Museum Complex Competition Entry Date - JUN. 2016 Site - SEJONGSI, SOUTH KOREA Client - The National Agency for Administrative City Construction (NAACC) Design Team - Kerem Yazgan, Kongpyung Moon, Aylin Kose 3D visuals - RJ Models Consultance - GMD Engineering Design Purpose 1. Creating Urban Plaza 2. Exposing Museum Storage to public 3. Practical Usage of the Museum Complex during construction period.

60

Urban Plaza Museum Complex I took major role in this project, starting from initial concept of the design untill the submission of it. All of the diagrams in the project are done by myself, sections and plans are done by me, Kerem Yazgan and Aylin Kose.

Urban plaza does not only have the entrances to the museums but also glass cubes that visually connects the inside of the museum and the storage tank. Therefore, people will witness the value gaining period of an art work. The public will be the part of the value. The promenade connects the five archive museums with heritage museum, facing the Geum river, also, slightly sloped walkways is the introduction, respecting the legacy of national heritage.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. -The Road Not Taken, Robert Frost-
