It is no news that the City of Austin is growing quickly, has a red-hot real estate market and is grappling with all the issues concurrent with this success. Locating affordable housing and associated programs throughout the city is critical to sustainable community and one that deserves talented and experienced designers such as the team of McKinney/York and Koning Eizenberg. Together we bring an unparalleled combination of local expertise and national calibre design to this endeavor. By joining forces, we aim to leverage our strengths for the maximum benefit at reasonable cost.

McKinney York, recipient of both the AIA Austin and Texas Society of Architects Firm Awards, has been locally based for 31 years. Winner of over 3 dozen local, state and national design awards, the practice has worked effectively for numerous public entities including the City of Austin. We recently completed the well-received Anderson Village affordable housing project and we are currently at work on the Women and Children’s Shelter. McKinney York Architects is committed to providing humane and welldesigned environments that foster community and a sense of self-worth. From our bus stations to our housing projects, we implement thoughtful and unexpected solutions to contribute to the livability of our city. We are also well-versed on the complexities of navigating projects through the public and permitting processes- something that has stymied many nonlocal design teams. In a recent Residential Architect profile, Koning Eizenberg is cited for “complex commissions that mend the social fabric of neighborhoods, such as affordable housing….these artful, upbeat buildings belie the social and economic forces often stacked against them…KEA’s buildings have the power to change everyday lives.” Recipient of the AIA’s California Council Firm Award, Koning Eizenberg has set the bar nationally for smart, creative affordable housing. We have designed and completed thousands of market rate, mixed use, mixed income and affordable housing units. Our interest in community spills into the making of neighborhood places with community centers, libraries, schools and parks across the country including the Thinkery here in Austin. Opened in December 2013, the Thinkery has become a favorite learning resource. So, why this particular collaboration? The principals of both firms have been in the same close-knit roundtable for 8 years. We respect each other’s talents, accomplishments, ethics and drive for design excellence. Quite honestly, by blending the local manpower and knowledge base of McKinney York with the design horsepower of Koning Eizenberg, a client gets both financial and design synergies.

28th Street Apartments The restoration and expansion of a landmark YMCA built in 1926 restores principal spaces, reconfigures original housing, and innovatively adds replacement units. The design re-establishes this building’s role as an important community focus and brings living quarters in compliance with contemporary standards.

Waterloo Apartments Blending into a historic neighborhood, the Waterloo Heights apartments provide homes for special-needs tenants including disabled veterans, seniors and individuals with HIV or AIDS by utilizing a 100% density bonus for affordable housing and multiple funding sources including HUD.

Harold Way Apartments As part of the Hollywood Community Housing Corporation’s mission to increase the number of quality affordable rental units, this project offers one-, two- and three-bedroom family apartments around community amenities. The organization of units and use of shadow and texture creates ambiance within a tight budget.

Hancock Lofts This mixed-use development, achieved through a public-private partnership, creates an iconic corner in West Hollywood, CA.

Century Building & Bike Center Conceived of as part of the downtown Pittsburgh Cultural District revitalization program, the adaptive-reuse of the under-utilized Century Building (built in 1907 as offices) and creation of a bike center offer needed prototypes for downtown development.

The Village As a key component of Santa Monica’s vision for revitalizing its Civic Center, The Village provides mixed-income housing (50% affordable) organized around the concept of a “living street.

Otis Booth Campus The Children’s Institute, who serve children and families exposed to violence, wanted a new headquarters that would propel institutional change and support a holistic approach to services.

Virginia Avenue Park Taking a campus approach, the revitalization and expansion of Virginia Avenue Park weaves together facilities for a variety of users including teens, seniors, and families. Developed through an interactive process, the park is now a vibrant destination for an invested and diverse community.

African American Cultural & Heritage Facility Located at the gateway to the African American Cultural and Heritage District, this project restores and repurposes an 1890s home, built by the son of a freed slave, as the District’s Visitors Center. Offices, meeting rooms, parking and a performance space for community organizations are housed in a new structure that respects the scale, proportions and material palette of the streetscape.

Anderson Village For as little as $55K per unit, this municipally-funded multifamily project participated in the City of Austin’s SMART Housing Program. Pragmatic yet considerate design coupled with the larger goals of equity, accessibility, and safety merge to have a direct and positive impact on the community, creating a space of decency and dignity for low income families.

Women & Children’s Center McKinney York is currently in design on the first phase of expansion and renovation to a 1929 facility in East Austin. Originally built as a sanatorium, the design leverages its single-loaded corridors, southern-facing windows and park-like setting to optimize temporary housing for moms and their children. The new communal spaces, daycare facilities and streamlined circulation minimize disorientation and offer simple comfort.
