Focuses on essential university-level listening and speaking skills. Prerequisite: Appropriate score on Dorset English Proficiency Exam or successful completion of Dorset AP III. Co-requisite: ENGL 097 _______________________________________________________________ Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course, students will be able to • Recognize rules of professional and academic interaction. • Demonstrate appropriate use of targeted English idioms and academic vocabulary • Use communication strategies in collaborative contexts • Demonstrate control of basic structures of spoken English grammar. • Present organized spoken discourse on a given topic. • Participate effectively in class as group members and presenters. • Demonstrate a fundamental competency in academic listening and note-taking. _______________________________________________________________ Course Content: English 097 is one of Dorset's two first-level English courses in the College's university transfer (UT) programs. This course is meant to provide students with instruction and practice in the basic English language skills necessary for success in the Dorset English course sequence (English 096/097; English 098; English 099; English 100; English 150). In English 097 students will focus on gaining good listening and speaking skills at the "High Intermediate" level. This course prepares students to speak fluently and idiomatically and to listen effectively. These are skills which are important in academic and work settings. The listening activities are actual university lectures based on subjects such as psychology, economics, media, sociology, biology and environmental studies. These lectures aid students in recognizing language and obtaining meaningful content from the lectures. All speaking activities will be based on lecture topics or skills required in the academic environment Classwork will include practice in speaking and listening in academic contexts and work with text vocabulary. Homework will also require reading and writing. _______________________________________________________________ Instructional Methods: Instructional approaches in this course will include lectures, class discussion, inclass group work and individual work.
