By Joseph Tiller
he Internet as we currently experience it, could be coming to an end. You may have increasingly heard the term Net Neutrality in the most recent months. It has been a hot button topic for the past few years and a major decision to regulate the internet has been made by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). On December 14, 2017, the FCC under the leadership of Republican chairman, Ajit Pai, has repealed the Net Neutrality Act. With the internet being such an essential piece of society and everyday life, everyone will be affected in one way or another. What is Net Neutrality (Act)? In 2015, former president Obama passes legislation that protects consumer rights in regards to how the internet functioned. The Net Neutrality Act prevented internet service providers from controlling the type of content you see and interact with online. It also prevented these service providers from affecting the quality and price of your service. It preserves our right to share and access information freely online. What can happen when net neutrality is gone? Companies like Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T will be able to control a large amount of of the content we have access too, causing you to choose between certain websites, apps, and networks. Major media companies have already begun to position themselves in a matter to control as much of the media as possible. Disney has already made a move to buy majority of Fox network. AT&T is trying to push through a merger with Time Warner, one of the biggest mergers to ever happen if they are able to get through some legal battles. Continue on pg 7

These mergers and buyouts are creating less competition and giving major internet services the reins to the internet. There is also the fear of the the regulation of free speech. Without net neutrality, it will be more difficult for individuals to share information and their thoughts freely online. It grants these major companies the ability to suppress opposing views, regulating what consumers see and hear. Is there a way to get net neutrality back? It looks like the internet will no longer be undefeated. This is an “L”, even if temporary. There are plans being put into motion to put things back into order. Democratic Senate Minority Leader of New York, Chuck Schumer is taking action to bring back net neutrality. By utilizing the Congress Review Act (CRA), congress can overturn the FCC’s decision. A method repeatedly used by republicans to overturn legislation passed during the Obama administration. Schumer plans to force a vote on a bill that will restore net neutrality laws. As with most things that involve congress, the proceedings can and probably will take a while. Lets just hope that they are successful in bringing back the Net Neutrality Act. KT
