Caring for Others through the Cancer Patient Support Program By Melisa Carper My mom, Kathy Carper, was first diagnosed with breast cancer when she was just 34 years old, and battled the disease off and on for 17 years. Besides being the world’s most incredible mom, she also spent her time caring for other people as a nurse, at what was then Kootenai Medical Center. Throughout her cancer treatments, my family felt as though we had been adopted by a new extended family– our medical family. Those who provided care sincerely, genuinely, and deeply cared for my mother, and by extension, cared for my dad, my brother and me.

Unfortunately my mom lost her battle with cancer. As many know, the disease leaves a feeling of helplessness and my family wanted a way to honor my mom’s legacy and bring good to a devastating situation. In 2001 the idea for the Breast Fest fundraising event began. What started as a ping-pong tournament in my dad’s garage has grown significantly, and in 2014 we celebrated the sixth annual event! Breast Fest is a tongue-incheek title to a gathering that draws hundreds of supporters to Paddy’s Sports Bar, our family business. To date, we have raised over $41,000 to benefit the Kootenai Health

Foundation’s Cancer Patient Support Program and the Susan G. Komen Idaho affiliate. We miss my mom every day. I was married in 2014, and my brother’s wife is expecting the first grandbaby this year. We often think about how thrilled she would have been for these big life moments. So we know firsthand what families are going through when they get that cancer diagnosis, and if there is any way we can help ease the burden, than that is what our fundraising efforts are for.

Investing in Clinical Excellence

Jack & Helen Yuditsky

Longtime Friends of the Foundation, are paying it forward by investing in Kootenai’s future. With the tremendous support and investment of steadfast donors Jack and Helen Yuditsky, every year the Kootenai Health Foundation awards “Clinical Excellence” scholarships.

The scholarships are available to employees pursuing a higher level of education while working at Kootenai. In 2014 Belinda VanDitto, an RN from the cardiac cath lab, was one of the students chosen for the award.

Belinda is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) from Lewis and Clark State College and also carries the load as her family’s sole income provider while her husband attends school full time. “Getting this scholarship has been a huge help,” she said. “If I hadn’t gotten it I wouldn’t be able to go back to school to get my BSN. The Foundation has been very supportive and helpful in managing my tuition and fees.” Receiving her BSN will not only benefit Belinda in her current role at Kootenai, but it will also help to open doors for her in the future. In addition, Belinda’s efforts support Kootenai Health to further its goal of having 80 percent of nursing staff achieve BSNs by the year 2020. “Furthering your education in our field is so important,” Belinda said. “It allows us to provide better care to our patients and makes us more valuable to our team.”
