Mark Twain said, “I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.” As a veteran of Ontario’s public school system I’m inclined to agree. My high school in uptown Toronto was a village in itself, with 2,000 young humans breaking down its doors every day. The chaos was kept in check by 3 vice principals, each more severe than the last, and a roaming hall monitor we called Batman. The cops were a regular presence outside the “south doors” where kids went to smoke and occasionally fight. Still, light made it through the cracked brick walls. The school was so big that some subversive teachers managed to operate under the radar of the higher authorities. Tucked deep in the trenches of that crumbling old building these soldiers for free thinking opened our young minds to the weird wonderful world that we had stumbled into blindly. No matter the institution, education happens because of people sharing knowledge and not because of information in textbooks. It comes through
travel and experience, not standardized tests. Through my research into Kootenay education I’ve been inspired by how schools seek to empower students. Waldorf, SelfDesign and others give students the opportunity to guide their education in ways that assure self-esteem, confidence, and personal growth. These new education systems see students as fullyhuman beings and not just minds for the moulding. Thanks to the schools moving things forward and to the teachers still trying to make an old system work. Students, good luck in your new year. Take risks and follow what excites you the most. Thanks to all who made their mark on this issue, and an open invitation for content for our Hallowe’en/ Harvest issue next moon! Brain

CREATIVITY > LEARNING Education means many things to many people. My favourite definition is “an enlightening experience.” It disarms education and deformalizes our idea of it’s meaning by removing the strictures and allowing every second of one’s life to be a form of education. Nelson British Columbia is home to a veritable rubix cube of learning facilities and elucidating options. There is almost nothing a learner couldn’t study here or a teacher couldn’t teach. And while we are all teachers and all students in the classroom of life, it is the brave who choose a vocation in education. It is a great deal of responsibility to offer guidance and illumination. Education teaches us that school is only a part of the picture, and creativity is the river that courses through it. Michael

EDUCATION
ed·u·ca·tion [ejəˈkāSHən]: 1. the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life. 2. see also: alternative education, public education, free education, student movements, academia. 3. Any enlightening experience.
NEW SCHOOL CONSCIOUSNESS
The meaning of “educate” derives from latin “educere,” “bring out, lead forth.” Schooling models based upon “stuffing in” and “beating down” are, therefore, not “educational” at all! Implied is that knowledge exists within each being and may be drawn out while guiding the learner to continually develop further, share, communicate and illuminate. Schools in our midst tend to suppress and cram information while profiling students with “records” and abusive limitPlato ing attitudes and
actions. I propose to eliminate vice principals and replace them with mentors/educators. Our bullying culture requires healing through change. Replace the heavy “bad cop” school administrators with caring, hands-on, practical educators. Employ professionals who bring out latent potential and lead their charges forth to create a better world, breathing life into the possibility of an enlightened future. SALVATION ARMY SCHOOL SUPPLIES DRIVE The beginning of a new school year is always a stressful time for families struggling to make ends meet. To help relieve some of that stress, the Salvation Army is asking for help in providing school supplies. WHAT’S WALDORF?
The goal of Waldorf education is the balanced growth of the intellectual, emotional, and moral capabilities of each child, and a focus on intellectual activities takes place later than in conventional schooling. Many child development researchers agree that children should develop basic physical, social and creative abilities before they encounter intellectual learning, and Waldorf education allows development of all these areas to occur in their natural time. A Waldorf education is a journey of discovery. The curriculum is designed to introduce subjects at the appropriate developmental moment, and teachers create opportunities for students to experience deeply what they are learning. Students encounter subject matter experientially, through story, movement, drawing, painting, writing, speaking, inventing, acting, sculpting, etc. for more check out nelsonwaldorf.org
“Our highest endeavour must be to develop free human beings who are able of themselves to impart purpose and direction to their lives. The need for imagination, a sense of truth, and a feeling of responsibility—these three forces are the very nerve of education.” Rudolf Steiner, Founder of Waldorf Education

When the days grow shorter And the nights get colder Then I know the time for school to start Is near. A creeping dread still lurks in the hollow Of my spine… and when I think of opening day I can feel its cold pulse Even though I am retired After thirty years plus Of teaching school And fare no prospect of newly hopeful And freshly scrubbed students Pouring into my room and throwing Themselves down into the orderly rows Of my immaculate classroom To wait for me to guide them Into chaos. OLD BILL MINER
Bill Miner created an enduring legend that grew up around one of the Old West’s most unusual outlaws. Credited with coining the phrase “Hands Up” he was known far and wide for his genteel manners and apologetic demeanour. Soft spoken and polite even while committing armed robbery, he would often apologize to passengers for any inconvenience. He was the first man to rob a train in Canada. He was linked to stagecoach holdups and train robberies throughout the West. For more on the story of Old Bill check out the book Old Bill Miner, Last of the Western Bandits by Frank Anderson.

BOUND AND GAGGED AT THE BORDER Dear Barack Obama You got the wrong guy. I’m on your side! Actually it was because of trying to get onto your side that I will probably never get to meet you. And it was when they put the handcuffs on and took me into the stainless steel cell to “pat me down” that I realized that you probably will never know that Homeland Security was manacling the wrong guy. You’ve got the wrong guys representing the home land, and that your own foot soldiers are stomping America’s already muddied flag even deeper into the soil that we used to happily share and that our fore-fathers died arresting from the Aboriginals. Let’s not forget about our origins. Divided we fall. “Put your hands behind your back and spread your legs. I’m going to handcuff you now.” Within minutes of entering the Nelway halls of injustice I went from being a slightly above average Canadian businessman into a below average threat to the Homeland. Being in-terror-gated and tagged by tactical team of transcontinental caper crusaders was not what I had dreamt of when i set out from Nelson bound for Spokane Washington to pick up copies of issue two. Not one butt, but two of your, ahem, rear admirals took great pleasure in stripping me of my dignity while I searched the kangaroo courtroom for signs of humanity. My eyes landed on the shot guns. Then the truncheons, then tazers, then
pepperspray, then the Nexxus machine, the electronic fingerprinting machine and finally came to rest on the Bible. I guessed that if all those other weapons of mass destruction didn’t do the trick, the cross border Babylon could throw the good book at the at the guilty bi-partitioners. Somehow, these Homeland Security guards have become the spokesmen for the new America. Sure I stole a camera when I was fourteen years old, that will always be on my record. But i also sold my advertising company to Viacom in 1998 for a pile o Benjamins but somehow Big Brother neglected to put that in my file. And now in 2012 the first amendment subjects Canadians like me to the third degree scrutiny reminiscent of Slaughterhouse 5, 1984 and Farenheit 451. In closing, Mr. Obama, I know you didn’t design the Homeland Security Northern Border mandate that is doing nothing but turning the few Canadians that were your friends into enemies of the States. Give me a call if you’re ever looking for a good marketing director… you are going to need it. Since eerily, Michael Canada

UNDERGROUND TEACHERS
The underground railroad was the name given to a secret series of safe-houses and foot paths that led from the deep southern United Slave States north to the safety of Canada where slavery had been abolished. Harriet Tubman was one of the main porters on road to freedom risking life and limb guiding groups of over 70 slaves to the great white north. The terminus of the freedom train was a tiny crossroads known as Fairport on the Sydenham River in the County of Kent in southern Ontario which formed the eastern corner of the negro triangle, where the town of Dresden, my hometown, now stands. Josiah Henson, perhaps the most famous freed man to make it to Canada, believed strongly in education of his brethren. Josiah started the first freeman’s school in the country teaching wood working, leather craft, forging and of course cabinetry. Like a bright light at the end of a very long and dark tunnel, Josiah Henson’s trade school prepared any captives who made it that far for a life of prosperity in their new homeland. Josiah Henson’s house at the edge of Dresden is now a tourist attraction ironically dubbed Uncle Tom’s. Michael google Josiah Henson slavery in Canada

ANTI-ENBRIDGE CARAVAN From July 19-26, 2012 the Kootenay to Kitimat Caravan took a message to communities on the proposed Enbridge route: Stop the pipeline! Four guys from the Kootenays undertook an unusual protest of the Enbridge pipeline this summer. After several Kootenay events about the pipeline proposal people wanted to do more, and the Kootenay to Kitimat Caravan began. In the end it was only four older men, dubbed "the geezer gang" who could take the ten days to do the trip. With lots of local support, a motion from Nelson City Council, some fundraising and money from the local Council of Canadians chapter, the Caravan was ready to head out. The Caravan took along a Proclamation that had been signed by over 500 people. It was a message to the communities on the pipeline route: "We support you and your right to refuse the pipeline access to your lands, waters and communities." "The Caravan quickly got more exciting than we expected," says organizer Keith Wiley. In Grand Forks, Margaret Steele arranged for Mayor Brian Taylor and other citizens to meet us. In Kelowna the Council of Canadians put on a picnic for the Caravaners and held a rally with out side a Mall. "People were pleased to have a way to say: we don't want a tar sands pipeline," Wiley explained.
In Kamloops a crew appeared to carry the Caravan's mock pipeline down main street chanting: "No pipeline! No Tar Sands! No Problem!" NDP Leader Adrian Dix happened to be in Williams Lake at the time of the Caravan event and spoke out to explain how his party was actively opposing it. "It was exciting when we began meeting the people on the pipeline route, people like Chief Martin Louis of the Nadleh First Nation," Wiley said. "We presented the Proclamation, and the Chief and others were pleased with the gesture of support.” The "geezer gang" ate salmon with the Gitxsan in Hazelton, met Chief Namox of the Wet'suwet'en in Smithers and spoke at City Council in Kitimat. We got lots of news coverage, and helped rally opposition to the pipeline," Wiley says. But he says the Caravan crew was also humbled by the commitment of pipeline opponents everywhere they went. "All these active people are surely going to stop this disastrous pipeline from going through," he says. The Caravan crew is planning a public report back meeting in Nelson in later September.

After a fifty year dormancy the 20th century ball point was invented by a couple of Hungarian ex-hypnotist brothers named Biro and at the behest of the President of Argentina began production in that country. NET INTELLIGENCE
While finding evidence of alien intelligence out there is unpredictable, I believe it is almost certain we will meet alien intelligences here on earth. These minds will be “machine” intelligences, and thus by definition, alien to us. Yasodhara Ashram is a yoga retreat and monastic community on the East Shore of Kootenay Lake. For 50 years it has served as a spiritual shelter for countless wondering souls. Many arrive with a sense of spiritual longing and dissatisfaction with life. Some come during times of transition, like a relationship ending or the death of a loved one. Others commit to long stays in order to focus solely on personal healing and evolution. At the Ashram "yoga" is much broader than the physical poses. Asanas, while important, are only one of the eight limbs of yoga. Karma Yoga- the yoga of selfless service, Bhakti yoga- the yoga of devotion and worship, and Japa Yoga- the recitation of spiritually powerful chants, are all central to life at the Ashram. for more check out yasodhara.org Brain
PRO VIPASSANA Vipassana is a 10 day trial of a universally accessible meditation technique based on the teaching of Buddha. You’ll learn to observe reality as it is, moment to moment, within the framework of the body. Five precepts are taken to support the practice: noble silence, no killing, no lying, no stealing, and no sex. For the first three days observation of the breath is the sole task. After that the technique changes from anapana (observation of breath) to vipassana (observation of sensation). J u s t as
A young man, once in India, who was to become the Buddha, had retired from the village, and the life of the world, to reach enlightenment beneath a Bodhi Tree. Each day, for many moons, he sat in his asana, fasting, watching his breath, chanting Aum silently in his mind. His hair had grown down into dreadlocks, past his shoulders, which matched his long, unkept beard, so long had he been sitting. One day, while he was sitting, a butterfly chanced to land upon his nose, arousing him from his meditation, with the tickle of it’s light touch. When his eyes fluttered open, his gaze became fixed upon a cow across from him in the pasture, and like him, it had left the rest of the herd, in order to be alone. It was lying on its side,
lifting weights can make one physically stronger, remaining consciously aware increases mental strength. Invariably one becomes aware of the subtler levels of reality. Understandings about the conditioning and impermanence unfold through one’s direct experience of them, teaching us more deeply about the source of misery. For me I find a 10 day course is like pulling the cord on a chainsaw. The engine might not start after the first pull but eventually the engine will fire up and persistent work can be accomplished. I feel much like an infant in this practice and largely inadequate at expressing myself in regards to it. It has been an immense gift in my life and I couldn’t recommend any more highly. The course is by donation which I find to be a testament to its authenticity. May all being be happy and achieve the final goal. Metta, CR

He watched with intent as the chest of the cow rose, fell, then came to rest, and in that instant the spirit of life entered into him truly for the first time. He immediately arose and returned to the village, full of laughter, lightness, and wisdom, for he had been born back to life, and was dead no longer.

CHECK THE TECHNIQUE The technique which S. N.Goenka teaches represents a tradition that is traced back to the Buddha. The Buddha never taught a sectarian religion; he taught Dhamma - the way to liberation - which is universal. In the same tradition, Mr. Goenka’s approach is totally non-sectarian. For this reason, his teaching has a profound appeal to people of all backgrounds, of every religion
and no religion, and from every part of the world. All sincere people are welcome to join a Vipassana course to see for themselves how the technique works and to measure the benefits. All those who try it will find Vipassana to be an invaluable tool with which to achieve and share real happiness with others. dhamma.org

I pondered this statement for years and couldn’t for the life of me see any logic in his advice. Recently I was delighted to learn that our hearts are 60% the same matter as our brains, and our hearts do indeed “think”. At that moment I realized our hearts also emanate all around us. I realized that it only makes sense to follow our hearts. Brandie Disher

WHAT THE BELL?
My dear older sister tells me she remembers her school bell being an old brass hand held that old Mrs. Rigsby would clang out the window to signal commencement of the school day, recess, lunch, recess and end of day. That was still the sixties. A time before the automated high pitched bright red wall hung bell that you tried to kick the ball at to hit. Compared to the lilting tones of the old brass clanger, this new red ringer would have indeed been alarming. This stylish shiny bell formed the continental standard with it’s loud yet optimistic rapid fire ringer ringing in the key of see. Then, all of the sudden, it was decided that old red bell was not effective anymore. As a result it was then decided that the buzzers used in jails around the world would be the very same buzzers that would sadly replace old beller. Somehow a choice was made that said we want the kids to hear what are technically termed MCD’s or mind controlling devices. The same tactics used in physiological warfare. If you keep following the google trail starting with DARPA you will no doubt find a link to defence. I personally find the new noises an offence. I guess I’m old school. Michael

SINGING 101
Focus on the Feeling Focus on the feeling of the song to give you the perfect ”voice” for every part of it. Find Your “Middle Voice” Find your ”middle voice” (most natural voice) to have more leeway to go higher and lower. Try singing the numbers one to ten, alternating your highest and lowest voice; then, let out an aaaahhhhh sound. This be might your middle voice! Breathe Lots! Breathe a lot! Find spaces to consciously breathe. Improvise and Play This gives you an opportunity to feel and hear where your voice is in the now, without any ideas of what it is ‘supposed’ to sound like. This helps when I sing an ‘older’ song I wrote when my voice was different. When I improvise I see where my voice is now and I can add the new voice to the old song. Choose the Right Song Choose a song that fits where you are and moves you to where you want to be. If you have a song that keeps you feeling sad, it might be time to let go and focus on songs that bring you to a space of feeling better now. If you can do this with singing as well as in everyday life, everything will shift to match your new feeling state. Shine Kelly www.shineinsong.com

TANTRA: STEP ONE
“Knowing Thyself” Integration of Tantra in romantic coupling is key to experiencing and sustaining true embodied ecstasy, in a world largely preoccupied with consuming forms of temporal sexual fantasy. Opening to what we want and surrendering what we have to offer with an intimate partner establishes parity of value based on trust and mutual respect. This creates a sacred container for relationship. Inferring “union”, Tantra is the mindful practice of consensual erotic power exchange that affirms, validates and facilitates human exploration of emotional/ physical/intellectual/spiritual potential and range. By releasing ourselves to the bliss of transcendent catharsis and merging our instinctual whole-being-ness (holiness) authentically in the context of the senses, we remember pleasure is our birthright and essential ingredient to successful existence. Like playing with the tension of an elastic band or tossing a ball between two people, Tantra is the breath of suspension that extends the dance of chemistry aka “Kundalini energy” beyond the bedroom into every day living, by completing and fulfilling our profound desires in a mutually satisfying and beneficial way. Coffee berries have formed an economy in Bali for well over a thousand years. But beyond it’s intended purpose as a delicious stimulating drink, Bali Coffee or Kopi Bali as it is referred to on the island of the Gods was actually intrinsic in matters religious. Coffee and sugar are presented to every bride and groom upon entering the wedding ceremony by all attendees. The hallowed Turkish grind is laid at the annointed feet of sooth sayers, seers, exorcists, witches black and white as well as priests high and low. In short coffee is high on the list of the sacred staples on Bali forming an important element in the mystical mandala that guides the ultra spiritual Balinese Hindus in their daily lives. You will see it alongside flowers, rice, palm l eaves and cakes that form an endless chain of delicious offerings to the innumerable Gods that watch over the tiny island. The incomparable brown powder is even attendant at the cremation ceremonies to assist in ascension to Nirvana from the earthly state of half and half. BARBEQUE U
I had always said that I would go back to school when I retired but I never imagined that it would be barbeque school, run by the larger than life TV personality Myron Mixon of TLC’s Barbeque Pitmasters fame. The open-air school is walled in with split peach wood, the favoured smoke flavour in Georgia, “the peach state” and is surrounded by all manner of smokers or ‘pits’. There are huge BBQ war wagons with four smokers on them, smaller single whole hog smokers, large brick pits and something that looks like a huge fireplace that is used for making charcoal. People start drifting in and what I thought would be a small workshop soon turns into a horde of seventy five rabid enthusiasts from all over North America. Among us we find people from as far away as Alaska and of course myself from Vancouver. We have all made the pilgrimage to learn the

secrets of the BBQ King, Myron Mixon. You know this guy knows what he’s talking about when he prefaces most of his sentences with “this is the way my daddy did it” or “this is the way our granddaddy showed us”. Then we launched in, hands-on, preparing, butchering, cooking, brining, rubbing and smoking all manner of succulent foods. We smoked during the day, and all night with a vigil of students standing around talking about BBQ and plans for the future. There was a whole hog, briskets, pork butts, pork shoulders, ribs, cupcake chicken, burnt ends, pulled pork and we ate them smothered in the sauces and marinades that were prepared the day before. When it was all over and I had received my flimsy certificate proclaiming me to be a new grill master I headed home with ten years knowledge that I learned in a brief time at what we fondly refer to as Pork-U. Michael Harmer, Pitmaster Smokewood BBQ, 502A Lake St Nelson They say that one in six Canadians will visit Bali during their lifetimes which means that someone you know has tasted the magic of Balinese Babi Guling; the Golden Roasted Pig is the unanimous favourite amongst the three million Hindus whose eyes light up at the mere mention of the hallowed porker. And when I say roasted pork I’m talkin’ golden open fire roasted suckling pig of stupendous proportions. The golden roasted wonder is held very high in the Hindu religious structure and only served on auspicious occasions. Anyone who has ever spent any time on the island can tell you, there is no shortage of sacred days or deities so the pig is endlessly being turned on the spit. Selamat Makan Michael

You did it. You couldn’t resist the temptation, the craving for a THC buzz was just too great. “Ganja?” And that was all it took. CIGARETTE SPONSORED SCHOOLS In dozens of rural villages in China’s western provinces, one of the first things primary school kids learn is what made their education possible: tobacco. “On the gates of these schools, you’ll see slogans that say ‘Genius comes from hard work -- Tobacco helps you become talented,’” said Xu Guihua, secretary general of the privately funded lobby group Chinese Association on Tobacco Control. The schools
are sponsored by local units of China’s government-owned monopoly cigarette maker. “They are pinning their hopes on young people taking up smoking.” “We’ve been trying to get the Ministry of Education to stop the tobacco companies from sponsoring these schools,” said Xu. “But the ministry wants us to show them proof that this is causing harm.” Daryl Loo

EARTHSHIP ONENESS TEMPLE This summer I am leading a crew to create a temple high in the mountains near Retallack BC. It will be an “earthship design” meaning that the foundation and walls are built from old tires rammed full of dirt. Although there have been many setbacks and challenges, my “why” for building this temple pushes me forward each time. The vision is to have a warm (heated by earth) friendly space for our community to nourish spirit and gain clarity about life’s purpose. We will hold sacred ceremony so we can see our dreams before they happen. We’ll host Vipassana meditation, Oneness blessings, breath-work ceremonies, Kundalini Yoga and work with medicines provided by
Pacha Mama. As a serious meditator, blessing giver, permaculture designer and self discipline neuro-strategist, the earthship temple is the perfect way for me to share my gifts with the world. In this great time of awakenings it is important for all of us to live our truth and vibrate on the highest vibration possible to inspire others to do the same. If you would like to help, visit dustineast.com or find Dustin on Facebook. All offerings to this project are graciously accepted whether it be financial, labour or most importantly directing your amazing energy towards us as we open our hearts to make magic happen! CHINESE MEDICINE SCHOOL The basic theories of Chinese medicine originate from ancient Daoist philosophy, which views a person as an energy system composed of both mind and body. Daoist thought stresses fluctuation and explains all phenomena in terms of rises and falls of natural forces. The ancient Chinese described an essential life-force or vital energy called Qi, which is present throughout the cosmos and in every living creature. Qi can and must constantly move and change. Qi enters the body mainly in food and breath, and circulates along pathways called meridians. Meridians link internal organs to skin and muscles on the body surface, and form the channels of communication between the vital organs and accessory organs of the body. As long as Qi flows freely throughout me-

In certain primitive societies, those born, who were considered divine, were suspended in indoor hanging cages, lest the sun should shine upon their head, or the earth touch their feet, soiling their divinity. Such is the attitude of the ascetic, to this day, who aspires to attain a higher spiritual consciousness through the denial of self and the ways of the world. It is perplexing indeed that the yogi should seek to become one with all things through isolation, and in truth, renunciation is only the first step towards selfmastery. Once achieved, Nirvana must be abandoned, in favour of returning from the mountain to the village to practise tantra, where one experiences the world, and all of its desires in full awareness, without becoming a slave to desire. One must be able to feast one day and to fast the next, for herein lies the middle path as taught by Buddha, and the Tao of Lao Tzu. What to do if someone ODs: 1. Call out for help - Do not leave the person. 2. If breathing place them on their side and watch until paramedics arrive. 3. If not breathing provide CPR (Give mouth to mouth). 4. DO NOT yell at them, shake them or throw them in an icy bath/shower. Talk loudly, pinch lightly on ear lobe or shoulder to arouse. 5. Regardless call 9-1-1 for an ambulance. You can tell them this person is not responsive and/or not breathing. 6. It is extremely important to let paramedics know what the person took.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE A man was walking along the beach. Ahead of him, he saw a woman dancing in the waves. As he got closer, he saw that she was throwing starfish, who had been stranded by the low tide, back into the ocean. “What are you doing?” he said to the woman. “I’m saving these starfish,” she replied. The man laughed. “There are thousands of starfish along this beach who will die today. You cannot throw them all back in. You cannot possibly make a difference.” The woman threw another starfish back in, and laughed. “It made a difference to that one.” Kathy Bishop

STING AN AWFUL TEACHER
Sting confessed he was an awful teacher before he was a rock star because he only taught kids subjects he found interesting. The rocker was a teacher in his native Newcastle, England before swapping school for the Police. He explains, “I inspired the kids only by teaching them what I liked, was inspired by and enjoyed - that was basically soccer and poetry. The rest of it I couldn’t teach.” We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing. George Bernard Shaw
“Although Nelson did not exist until the late 1880s, the history of man in this area dates back to when the great pyramids were being constructed in Egypt. WHAT WAS LIFE LIKE BEFORE EUROPEAN SETTLEMENT?
ENVIRONMENT en·vi·ron·ment [enˈvīrənmənt] noun: 1. The surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or plant lives or operates. 2. Ecology. the air, water, minerals, organisms, and all other external factors surrounding and affecting a given organism at any time. 3. the social and cultural forces that shape the life of a person or a population.
PERMACULTURE
Permaculture is an ecological design system for sustainability in all aspects of human endeavour. It teaches us how build natural homes, grow our own food, restore diminished landscapes and ecosystems, catch rainwater, build communities and much more. The Earth is a living, breathing entity. Without ongoing care and nurturing there will be consequences too big to ignore. Care of the Earth can be taken to mean caring for the living soil. The state of the soil is often the best measure for the health and well-being of society. There are many differ-
ent techniques for looking after soil, but the best method to tell if soil is healthy is to see how much life exists there. Our forests and rivers are the lungs and veins of our planet that help the Earth live and breathe, supporting many diverse life forms. All life forms have their own intrinsic value, and need to be respected for the functions that they perform - even if we don’t see them as useful to our needs. By reducing our consumption of ‘stuff’, we reduce our impact on the environment, which is the best way to care for all living things. sustainablecitynews.com
POUND FOR POUNDER
VEG VS. CARNIVORE Here’s the myth: we need meat to survive. It simply is not true. It is, however, how we have been conditioned to think. I’m not saying everyone should become a vegetarian, but consider the consequences of how you fuel your body. Meat is high in saturated fats, cholesterol and calories. It’s hard on the digestive system and carries the highest risk of bacterial contamination of anything we could put in our mouths. It effects our immune system negatively and unless organic, it contains synthetic hormones which upset our own hormonal balance. Study after study shows that meat production leads to wasted natural resources - both water and land. That the process is heavily responsible for climate change and that meat raised under stressful conditions has a negatively altered biochemistry that negatively alter ours. So food for thought, so to speak. Be accountable for your own personal health with a diet heavy in vegetables and start to be the change you want to see in the world. Susan Munro Q: How can you tell if somebody is vegan? A: Don’t worry. They’ll let you know.
“Nothing will benefit human health and increase the chances of survival of life on earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.” Albert Einstein “If God did not intend for us to eat animals, then why did he make them out of meat? “ John Cleese

With all the rain this spring and all the sun this week the berries are STOKED to be eaten! Saskatoons weigh down bushes, and thimbleberries, wild raspberries, soapberries and tiny wild strawberries are prolific at this time of the sun cycle. Head out to the rail trails for feasting! Plantains offer leaves for healing minor cuts/scrapes and voluminous seeds make a crunchy nibble (or ground to flour for bannocks), Dandelion and Chicory leaves add liver cleansing to a salad and the flowers add colour and sweetness. The Sacred Forest offers everything we need, go and speak with it, ask it for its gifts, offer gratitude and gifts of your own, BE AWARE, and Enjoy the World as Nature intended! May We All Be Free! WEIRD WORLD weird |wi(ə)rd|: suggesting something supernatural; uncanny: the weird crying of a seal. • informal very strange; bizarre: a weird coincidence | all sorts of weird and wonderful chanting I CHICKEN BROCKOVICH t was in 2002 while living in Bali that I discovered a bio-hazard so terrifying that exposing it would become an obsession. As a neo-activist I nervously worked to shine an international spotlight on this extremely dangerous situation. And even though I love Bali and this piece is not intended to harm anyone… I intend to deliver the news. I don’t believe anyone from anywhere should be allowed to force children to spend their entire school years surrounded by some of the largest poultry farms in Indonesia. These kilometre long appallingly filthy cages are visible on google earth and are as close as within an arm’s reach of schools, infesting the air with extremely toxic faecal
matter. I visited at least ten schools within the danger zones throughout the island and found not one person that could connect air pollution and sickness. The flies are out of control and the smell is unbearable. Yet having been born into the chicken community they don’t know fresh air. I invited a journalist from Australia to visit the farms. She also wasn’t interested in the children’s opinions. One of the most corrupt places on the planet, Indonesia is easily fifty years behind as far as environmental knowledge goes, so the connection between fetid air pollution and bronchitis, asthma or H5N1 is not apparent. The husbandry by-law states that any cage below 10 000 birds needs NO permit of any kind. No permit means no septic which means run-off into rivers where the Balinese brush their teeth and bathe. So farmer X is able to build as many of the cheap bamboo structures as he likes as long as each cage houses 9 999. Not that any of the husbandry officials actually ever go to the farm. The opinions of children have rarely mattered in
most third worlds but when interviewed these children were obviously aware. They complained to me it but in Indonesia and most uber-religeous colonial dictatorships complaining is unwise and viewed as selfish. So no one rocks the boat. Indonesia has the highest death count from bird flu worldwide and when you visit these danger zones, you will see why. Bali lost it’s first youngster to H5N1 in May 2012. Contact us if you are going to Bali. Michael

KEEPING IT GLEAN
Gleaner [glēn er]: one who goes through the recycling bins, dumpsters, scrap piles and dumps to gather what is left lying about. I belong to a loosely organized group of people who are homeless, disabled, and living below the assumed appropriate level of poverty. We organize ourselves in a small way to help each other and are without adequate support like low cost rentals, vision care, dental care and other daily necessities of life. In 19th century British common-law it was stated that a farmer was not permitted to benefit from gleanings, and not allowed to discriminate among the poor who gather the leftovers. Gleaning was a legal right for the cottagers. In small villages the sexton would
often ring a church bell at 7 pm and again at 8 am to tell the gleaners when to begin and end work. Today gleaning is practiced by humanitarian groups who distribute the food to the poor and hungry. This can include collecting excess or outdated food that would otherwise be thrown away at supermarkets. There are a number of organizations that practice gleaning to help resolve issues of societal hunger. We are the faces of poverty and are trying to help each other. We’re finding ourselves prevented from doing so and would like you to leave us alone. When you see us trying to aid those who have fallen through the cracks, do not turn a blind eye, turn a compassionate one. Most if not all the money from recycling is going to corporations or government-funded organizations. The homeless and disadvantaged are not categorized as essential and fall by the wayside. So the needy are excluded from most support. You may think that harassing, charging and incarcerating us will change our efforts to help us reach economic parity with a civilized society. THINK AGAIN Mel Bell
DUMPSTER DIVING ISN’T FOR DUMMIES For a homeless person there’s isn’t always the option of going the Safeway, in fact while treading through a homeless day it is requirement that drives them to Save-on… to save what little money they have they will look at the big box store with an eye for what’s outside the box, not what’s inside. Is it well lit? Is there an easy getaway? Could it serve as a stash spot for all the groceries before hopping the CPR lands? And a diver is a practical person: the Loblaws of averages determine that the chances of a diver finding something that goes with beer or wine is a lot more likely than finding beer or wine in a dumpster. And the chances of finding weed are a hundred and seven to eleven that he will end up a dub stepping budless. So it is very important when considering the priorities as the prime mover in the dumpster equation… Hit the beer store before you dive… it’s is far greater to be drunk and hungry than just plain hungry. Television school is one of the first robots we encounter in life. It is mother, father, brother, sister, gramma, grampa, aunts, uncles and a whole world of friends. It is our window into other worlds that are animated by all the elements and characters that populate the real world. And unlike human teachers, television delivers information while asking nothing of it’s watcher. It doesn’t give you homework but offers endless stream of e-consciousness. Since it’s inception, television has presented a host for every occasion. Here are a few of everyone’s favourites.

Dear Kootenay-ites, The Kootenay Times HALLOWEEN HARVEST issue will be a terrifying look at the unknown. The October edition will illuminate the celebration of death as well as the harvest and all of it's magic. Get ready for a celebration of the darker shades of grey matter and what makes us scared, why we love it, and why we love it even more under the influence. Do self-immolators really wander eternally in purgatory? Do the ghosts of Aboriginals haunt the plains where they were slaughtered? Is the hair of virgins actually used to adorn the bone chilling monster costumes of Bali? Does the drawing of blood during the Pandan ceremonial fights of Lombok truly bring the rains? Why is chicken blood important in African exorcisms? And was there ever any truth to the tales of the Monkey's Paw? The door of darkness is never fully closed and the shadows of our cerebral netherworlds are constanttly beckoning us with taloned crooked fingers and wide upturned eyes. Join the Kootenay Times Moonly Magazine next month and be part of the Halloween Harvest Magazine written by YOU.
Halloween comes but once a year. And this year it's coming early. The Kootenay Times prints articles of approx. 150 words in length or shorter.

ART art [ahrt]: 1. The quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance. 2. Any field using the skills or techniques of art: advertising art; industrial art. 3. Making something out of nothing then selling it.
OURGLASS HUSTLE + FLOW “Hustle and Flow” is my recent Nelson exhibition, which I have chosen to hang in Ourglass Studio Gallery. This series includes several of my friends met in the city, Nick Gregson, Logan Sturrock, Arlin French, Sangito Bigelow, Johnny Yi and Jon Stewart (as well as local Oliver Davison). The importance of this is to show the evolution of myself as an artist, growing socially as well as creatively in the pursuit of higher expression. Ourglass Studio & Gallery, helmed by Dan Farden and Richie McBeath is a truly organic approach to selling art with the most transparent honesty one can find in the business. Located at 568

Ward Street, the store has large inviting windows, refracting the natural image of the shining, beautifully handcrafted objects inside. Over the course of throwing “Hustle and Flow” I have realized how invaluable these gentlemen are to the community in the sense of their seamless ability to integrate opposite areas of culture. In the past I would have had a much more cynical view on the nature of craft production due to my adolescent stubborn attitude, now I see how radical this model really is. I would dare to call them Marxist glassblowers, their extremely generous business conduct is totally in favour of the producing artists. Dan and Richie are deeply committed to supporting their artist’s needs, as well as their clientele’s abilities. Dylan Plishka-Humphreys
