Editorial PREPARED TO MEET FUTURE CHALLENGES
In 2015, Kopenhagen Fur will open four bonded warehouses in China. The warehouses will be operated in cooperation with Damco, a subsidiary of Maersk, the world’s largest shipping company. In fact, Maersk and Kopenhagen Fur have established a joint partnership that manages the transportation of skins and storage operations. Kopenhagen Fur is also in negotiation with several partners who can assume the task as officially recognized importer of skins. This part of the work will be done in close collaboration with the Nordic region’s largest bank, Nordea to ensure maximum financial security in the transaction for auction customers. The collaboration with Nordea also means that our auction customers can pay their outstanding account with Kopenhagen Fur in CNY instead of in USD, as is currently the most frequently used currency in the fur trade. Imports of skins into China have been characterized by a rather high degree of uncertainty and randomness. Many people within the fur trade got caught in the system and most of them look forward to imports taking place on equal terms and on the basis of a transparent system executed in strict accordance with applicable rules. We hope and believe that Kopenhagen Fur’s new service will contribute to this. At the same time, having “all in one service” will make it significantly less costly for customers to transport, import, pay for and store skins in China. We can offer somewhat lower rates on all services in the package than what our customers usually have to pay and, first and foremost, we can also offer great security in the transactions. Our customers have no risk on the goods or the amounts prepaid to official importers. At the same time, we

have attached great importance to the whole operation being fast and efficient, i.e. our auction customers can optimize their logistics considerably. Therefore, skins stored in our warehouses in China are subject to the same terms of payment and financing as if the skins were stored in Copenhagen. Kopenhagen Fur is also experimenting with a new method of packing. The current system is good enough but, as the boxes are rarely filled to capacity, quite a lot of Danish air is shipped to China, which is expensive. At the same time, in the current cardboard boxes, the skins are not especially suitable for storage, as they require low humidity and low temperature, which is quite costly. We have used many resources to investigate if it was possible to vacuum pack the skins, but we did not manage to find a workable method. Currently we are working on compressing the skins. This has almost the same beneficial effect as vacuum packing, but it is a much simpler and safer solution. The goal is to minimize the space wasted in
the boxes and thus minimize freight costs while at the same time making the skins more suitable for storage. In March, we are inaugurating our new storage and sorting facilities in Glostrup. We have expanded with a total of 10,000 square metres and now have more than 90,000 square metres of storage and production space. We have utilized our capacity to breaking point. Originally, the current framework was designed to handle 15 million skins; this past season we handled more than 25 million skins. With the expansion, we can handle up to 35 million skin units, due to the fact that we are also investing in storage capacity in China. In many areas, Kopenhagen Fur is well prepared to meet future challenges and we look forward to embarking on the future together with our many customers at the February auction.

Paying in CNY Customers will be able to now be able to pay in Chinese currency at the auctions in Copenhagen, which will make the payment process much easier. By Mathilde Pasga ard Dybdal
Many of the skins at Kopenhagen Fur’s auctions are sold to Chinese customers. But, until now, they have had to exchange their money twice to be able to pay for the skins. Today, a Chinese customer has to change CNY to USD, so USD can then be exchanged for DKK. This process takes time and resources. So, by making it possible for the Chinese customers to change CNY directly to DKK during our auctions, it will become easier to pay for
the skins. - By offering the use of CNY, it will be easier for our Chinese customers to pay for the skins, and that is the most important thing for us. I am very pleased that we now can provide our customers with an even better service, says Brian Tufvesson, Head of Customer Department. Over the years, Chinese customers have requested the option to pay in CNY, so Brian Tufvesson hopes that almost
all the Chinese customers will choose the new option. Many of Kopenhagen Fur’s customers export the skins from Kopenhagen Fur’s auctions to China, so hopefully it will be a great success. Kopenhagen Fur has already allowed three customers to pay in CNY, and they have all been very pleased. Chinese/English catalogues will ease processes for the CUSTOMERS In this new season, customers will be able to read the sales catalogues in both Chinese and English. - As we continue to receive more and more customers from China and Hong Kong, we felt it was a natural development to provide an additional service for them, says Paul Pedersen, Chief Auctioneer at Kopenhagen Fur, and adds: - For some time now, we have been working on presenting a sales catalogue in which the customers can read the contents in both Chinese and English. This new addition to the sales catalogue will be presented to the buyers in this season. According to Paul Pedersen, this initiative will make it easier for customers to navigate among the skins they are interested in purchasing. - I believe that the commission agents will have an easier time communicating

with and describing the strings to their customers, he says. - In addition, customers from China and Hong Kong may find it easier to follow the auction. For instance, if a customers is overbid in the auction room, he can more easily find another string that he may want to bid for instead, because the Chinese translation makes it easier for him to locate the desired goods. The Chinese/English catalogue will ease communication between Kopenhagen Fur, the buyers from China/Hong Kong and commission agents. Because of this, customers that are bidding via live streaming will also benefit. - We always prefer to welcome our customers to our auction room, but we
understand that it can be difficult to be present when having a busy schedule. For this reason, we also offer live stream auctions, where customers bid through commission agents who are present in the auction room. The new catalogues will make it easier for customers who prefer this option. Due to our excellent sorting, combined with the Chinese descriptions in our sales catalogue, our customers will be able to make bids with ease and confidence, says Paul Pedersen. On Kopenhagen Fur’s website customers can view the sales catalogue in different versions: a Chinese/English version, a Chinese version and lastly, an English version. These will be available in PDF-format.

Remember to register In the previous issue of Kopenhagen Fur News, the Customer Department informed customers how to register prior to attending an auction at Kopenhagen Fur. Registration prior to arrival is required in order to better service customers. This means that Kopenhagen Fur can anticipate and plan the service of international guests. Customers travelling from countries where a visa is required will also benefit greatly from registration upon arrival at Kopenhagen Fur. - By registration on your arrival to Kopenhagen Fur, you confirm to the embassy that you have been at our auctions. We have an ongoing correspondence with the Danish embassies around the world if the issued visas are being used. Only by registration at Kopenhagen Fur are we able to confirm to the embassy that a certain customer or buyer has visited the auction house. This makes it easier for a customer

Facts about registration Registration at the auctions is a two stage process that is both quick and easy. - Step one, the customers and buyers must register beforehand at www.kopenhagenfur.com or send an e-mail to customers@kopenhagenfur.com. Please inform us how many guests you are bringing or intend to bring. - Step two, the customers and buyers are also required to register upon arrival at the main entrance. Buyer’s registration – How to register to get your buyer number for the sale: Buyers arriving during the inspection or the sales are required to register by signing the Buyer’s Register form as early as possible in order to have seats allocated in the auction room. Please note that the registration may take time, especially when many buyers wish to register at the same time. Before the sales, the registration takes place in the Customer Department. On selling days, the registration takes place at the Customer Service Counter in front of the auction room.

Developing networks in Kazakhstan At the Fashion Week in Kazakhstan, Kopenhagen Fur participated as one of the main sponsors. The Fashion Week was opened with a design competition with sport as the theme. The main prize was a trip to Denmark where the winner will get the opportunity to work with the furriers at Kopenhagen Fur.
Kazakhstan is a fur-loving nation, and this was indeed obvious during the Kazakhstan Fashion Week, where the participants were excited to see Kopenhagen Fur’s fur designs at its stand. This excitement was also felt by Kopenhagen Fur’s representatives who were present during the event. - We took a few fur styles from Kopenhagen Fur as well as accessories from Oh! by Kopenhagen Fur. The visitors were excited to see what furriers and designers are capable of doing with fur; they gathered around our brightly coloured, innovative designs displaying an overall high quality, says Viktoriia Pustynikova, Market Development Coordinator at Kopenhagen Fur. She was part of the team that represented the Danish auction house in Kazakhstan.

Developing networks - The visitors were definitely excited by the event, because it is a good place for key players in the fashion industry to develop networks, she adds. The annual design competition, Open Way, was held for the fourth time and this year, the theme of the competition was sport. The challenge of the competition was met by 24 designers from 6 different countries. A representative from Kopenhagen Fur was in the judges’ panel, thus continuing a tradition that began last year when Kopenhagen Fur was also represented. A trip to Denmark The Open Way design competition was held on the first day of the Fashion Week and,
among all the gifted designers the winner was the 22-old designer named Zhuldyzai Rysbekova from Kazakhstan. She received the main prize which was donated by Kopenhagen Fur; an opportunity to work at Kopenhagen Fur’s creative workshop, Kopenhagen Studio. Here she can work alongside with furriers to learn about fur techniques. Inspired by the future Zhuldyzai Rysbekova won the Open Way design competition by creating work that revolved around sport as well as minimalistic, futuristic features. She is currently studying in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan and will visit Denmark sometime early in 2015.

Istanbul gathered the markets of the future The international textile fair, Premiere Vision, was held in Istanbul for the first time. Kopenhagen Fur participated and made use of its networking potential.
Kopenhagen Fur’s representatives had their own stand at the international textile fair, which was held in Istanbul in November. It was no coincidence that the largest city in Turkey was selected for the venue, historically; it has united East and West for centuries. The organizers of Premier Vision describe the bustling metropolis as the premium hub for Middle Eastern and Eastern European Fashion, and this is also the case when fur garments and skins are taken into consideration. Kopenhagen Fur has had an eye on the Turkish market for several years and, according to Ahmet Aydin, Key Account Manager, business is thriving in Turkey. “Turkey has the potential to become a new Middle Eastern success story. Turkish designers and furriers specialize in combining fur with leather and other textiles and we have witnessed their ability to find buyers for their products.”he says. At the fair, Ahmet Aydin met several

Middle Eastern clients who were interested in knowing how to proceed if they wanted to include fur in their product line. Building bridges According to Julie Maria Iversen, Head of Nexus, the focus on the fair in Turkey makes perfect sense. - The purpose of Nexus is to bridge the gaps that may exist between various players in the fur trade and fashion industry. By participating in this fair in Istanbul, we succeeded, because we are able to support and assist new buyers, manufacturers, designers and many others in this market and help them find useful partners. The textile industry can be complex and it can be difficult to find the proper supplier when it comes to fur skins. Therefore, our purpose is to assist businesses so that they can succeed. Our network is their network and, by offering our network during events like the one in Istanbul, it creates new markets for the
buyers in our auction room, she says.

Johannes Manakas is a well-known name in the international fur trade. As the CEO of Manakas and with years of experience, he has managed to build a comprehensive network of partners in a skin business and fashion industry, which can be difficult to navigate within. So how could he benefit from working with Kopenhagen Nexus in finding new partners? - There are many things that I have learned in my years in this business. Never to pass up an interesting offer is one of them. When Nexus approached us and offered the opportunity to connect us with creative designers and a desirable sales venue, we were immediately interested, says Johannes Manakas. Kopenhagen Nexus itself has a considerable network and connections with designers, sales platforms and other producers, etc. Kopenhagen Nexus therefore reached out to the acknowledged

designers Mark Tan and Ole Yde, who were tasked with creating fashion clothing that will primarily be centred around mink skins, but also with some Swakara. Nexus also managed to secure an agreement with the exclusive Japanese department store, Isetan, which is a leading brand with an
immensely strong presence in South East Asia, primarily in Japan and China. - The fact that Kopenhagen Fur’s Nexus Department established this three-way partnership, where they find the relevant designers and a suitable sales platform, and where we are selected to produce

these fur garments will benefit us because it increases our revenue. Also, by working with these partners through Kopenhagen Nexus, we are expanding our existing network. Furthermore, if you view it from a global perspective, the popularity of fur increases, because it becomes more visible and available to the public, he says. Ready by summer The designers, Ole Yde and Mark Tan, are currently working on their fur styles. These are to be completed by the beginning of February, when they will be shipped to Japan to be presented alongside with other internationally known brands such as Tod’s, Marc Jacobs and Dior. After this major promotion event, Isetan will issue a production order which will be handled by Manakas and supervised by Kopenhagen Fur’s Nexus Department. - My staff and I are proud to be a part of this collaboration and we look forward to producing these designs, which will be ready for Isetan by summer, says Johannes Manakas. Early on, we realized that it could be challenging for fashion designers or fur producers to find suitable business partners. This is the case for newcomers in the trade, but also for players that have been around for years, she explains and adds: - By bringing people together and ensuring that people within our specific trade enter into meaningful work
relationships, we continuously ensure that fur is always in demand, which benefits all of us. The most important thing to remember is that our network is available, for anyone who may be interested, whether he is a buyer in the auction room, a producer in Hong Kong or a designer in Paris, says Julie Maria Iversen. So would Johannes Manakas recommend working with Kopenhagen Nexus to others? - Of course, Nexus is very interesting for all fur companies; everyone in this business can benefit from their knowledge in analysis, strategy and business development. More than 10,000 Namibian children have been part of the pre-school programme financed by Kopenhagen Fur and run by dedicated spirits of the local organization, S.P.E.S. Charity. Currently, 38 pre-schools are being supported where passionate teachers can care for the children, by giving them hope and a better chance for a brighter future. Recently, Esme Coetzee, Project Manager of Kopenhagen Fur’s charity programme in Namibia, visited Kopenhagen Fur in Denmark for the first time. Here, she expressed her deep gratitude for the programme. - This initiative has an enormous impact on the lives of these children. Many of them

have been mentally and physically abused, and the pre-schools are the only place where an adult cares for them, says Esme Coetzee. Esme Coetzee visited Denmark at the beginning of December together with her fellow worker, Chantel Kamber. In addition to the meeting with the steering committee of Kopenhagen Fur’s Charity organization where they discussed the future goals for Kopenhagen Fur’s pre-schools, Esme and Chantel also met the employees of the auction house. Using slideshow, touching anecdotes and a series of video clips, Esme introduced the stories of the children in the pre-schools to the employees, many
of whom were moved by the harsh reality that Esme presented. The real heroes The Charity programme in Namibia started 8 years ago, and every year around 1,800 kids are part of the programme. What makes this programme very special and different from many other charity programmes run by companies, is that Kopenhagen Fur does not just donate money. They really care for the whole community. They bring not only materials for education; they also bring food since hungry children cannot concentrate and they educate the teachers to deal with the difficult situations, says Esme and continues:

- Kopenhagen Fur trusts us with the responsibility and that makes a huge difference. We are with the children every day and the communication with Kopenhagen Fur is very important. Every year, someone from Kopenhagen Fur comes to Namibia to visit us and see how we are doing, and now we are here in Denmark. We really feel the support. It is not just about the money, we really feel that the people in Denmark are there for us, says Esme. The schools have become recognized institutions in their local communities thanks to a dedicated group of teachers
that are committed to the project. The next intended step in the project is to try to involve the families and establish an even better cooperation between the teachers. This will involve teaching them leadership and communication, so they can benefit from each other and stand together in the struggle for the children. - Many parents do not care for their children. The children need love and the presence of their parents, but they do not receive it. We would like to reach the parents and try to communicate and build some sort of relationship with them, says Esme.
