Editorial quality pays off
This season has been characterized by some very clear trends in the international fur trade. Never before has the price difference between the finer qualities and the slightly weaker qualities been bigger. Simultaneously, exchange rate developments have clearly favoured the European farmers at the expense of the North American and Chinese. At Kopenhagen Fur’s June auction, the total collection was sold at an average price of DKK 345 per mink skin. The Danish mink skins fetched an average price of DKK 395, whereas the foreign skins were sold at DKK 268, a premium of as much as 47 per cent to the Danish farmers compared to their foreign counterparts. Although the cost level in Denmark is high, the higher price paid for Danish skins compensate for the higher costs, and from an economic point of view, the Danish farmers are therefore doing relatively better and better. The euro, and thus the Danish krone, has fallen by about 20 per cent since June 2014. In the same period, prices of Classic males have dropped by almost 20 per cent in US dollars, while Velvet males have only decreased by almost 10 per cent. The price difference between Velvet and Classic females has developed even more dramatic: In June 2014 the price difference was 30 per cent and in June 2015, the price difference was as much as 45 per cent in favour of Velvet. The European farmers producing Velvet skins have thus received a price increase measured in EUR or DKK, while farmers producing Classic skins have experienced a price decrease. Chinese and North American farmers did not benefit from any foreign exchange gains and have therefore received significantly less for their production this year. This development has been hard on the Chinese farmers, who are affected on both quality and exchange rate and it is therefore expected that especially the Chinese fur production will drop significantly. Conversely, the development in the

Similarly, through our cooperation with many international design universities and our own design centres, we have made great efforts to strengthen the fashion in fur and we are also dedicated to getting the fashion industry to include fur in their collections. exchange rate means that consumers in especially China and North America are experiencing decreases in prices of fur garments while for example the European and Russian consumers have to pay more. Exchange rate fluctuations reflect the real economy in the world with low economic growth in Europe and Russia and relatively high growth in USA and China especially. In light of the current situation in Greece and therefore in the Eurozone, and in light of the continuing trade restrictions against Russia and the low oil prices, this picture will not change noticeably in the coming years. Europe will be a good producer country for skins but a weak consumption country. The reverse will be the case for China and North America. This development is worrying to the extent that our trade is dependent on one huge market, namely China, while at the same time the trade is suffering from overcapacity. This applies in the fur production and the following links, and

especially with furriers and retailers, whose profit margins are unsustainably low and have been so for several years. As a trade, we are therefore weak capital-wise and thus very vulnerable to adverse changes in market conditions. For many years, Kopenhagen Fur has worked purposively on improving the quality of the fur production. Similarly, through our cooperation with many international design universities and our own design centres, we have made great efforts to strengthen the fashion in fur and we are also dedicated to getting the fashion industry to include fur in their collections. We are firmly convinced that despite the current difficulties the fur trade has a great future but it requires us to improve our product at all stages, including looking for new ways to reach the consumers.

Seal excemption remains The Inuit excemption that guarantees Inuits their right to hunt and sell seal skins will continue. By Michael Abilon
In June 2014, the World Trade Organisation ruled that the two Inuit exemptions concerning the trade of seal skins could have discriminatory effects. However, the European Union decided in May 2015 that the Inuit exception, which states that Inuits have a right to hunt and sell seal skins, due to the cultural importance this practice has for Greenlandic hunters, would not be revoked. - There was a large majority for the Inuit exemption and our agreement reflects the right to self-determination of the Inuit and other indigenous communities. Seal hunting is an integral part of the culture and identity of these communities, making

a major contribution to their subsistence, preserving and continuing their traditional lifestyle and the cultural heritage of bartering”, said Cristian-Silviu Bușoi, Member of the European Parliament, and added: - Because we have a very tight timeline, we will start negotiations immediately with the Council and I am very optimistic that a consensus will be reached quickly. An integral part of the Inuit community’s culture Members of the European Union chose to back a Commission proposal to align existing EU rules with the WTO ruling by
clarifying the Inuit exception. - Seal hunting is an integral part of the Inuit community’s culture and identity, and makes a major contribution to its subsistence by providing food and income. Inuits may sell seal products in the EU only if their hunting methods have due regard to animal welfare, are a part of their community’s culture and contribute to its subsistence, said several MEPs in a joint statement. They also explained that they are aware of the harm the EU ban on seal has had on local Greenlandic communities. They call on the Commission and Member States to mount awareness campaigns.

Top Lot for fashion products During the June auction, the Top Lot in Pearl Cross Females was purchased by Mr Derek Yin, representing Ms Li Rumei from KC Fur. Ms Li Rumei visited Kopenhagen Fur for the first time but she has worked with Kopenhagen Fur since 2009.
- I like it here, Ms Li Rumei says.
Ms Li Rumei is from Harbin, China, where KC Fur has a store. However, the company has more than 100 stores located around China, and the company retails the largest quantity of fur products in China. KC Fur is a retailer, a manufacturer and a buyer of skins and the company has its own designers. - Our customers expect fashion products made by the finest quality of skins at the best price, Ms Li Rumei says. That is why KC Fur bought the Top Lot, she says.

Top Lot to celebrate good health Mr Pat Wong bought the Stardust Males Top Lot to celebrate good health, which to him is the most important thing in life. At the June auction, Pat Wong from Loyal Speed Ltd. in Hong Kong, which is fully owned by UKF (Holdings) Ltd., purchased the Stardust Males Top Lot for 2,020 DKK per skin. - I have been attending Kopenhagen Fur’s auctions for 35 years and Torben Nielsen has become a good friend of mine. I bought this Top Lot to celebrate good health in life because I am pleased that Torben is regaining his health, says Pat Wong. Pat Wong was happy about purchasing the Top Lot also to celebrate that his company has switched to the Hong Kong mainboard stock market. - I simply love this special Top Lot. It will be used for bed runners and pillows that my daughter is developing. Our customers want the best quality and I think they will like this exclusive home collection a lot, says Pat Wong.

Mr Coskun Kölük became the buyer of the Chinchilla Top Lot for 690 DKK per skin. He is the owner of the Turkish family company, Tasari Kürkmod - also known as Gata Fur. The company is a factory with a showroom but they are opening a new store in Istanbul soon. - We purchased this Top Lot to promote good quality in our new store. We know our customers appreciate quality and that is what we represent, says Coskun Kölük.The Kölük family is no stranger to the auctions at Kopenhagen Fur where they have purchased Top Lots more than 10 times at Kopenhagen Fur’s auctions. This time Coskun Kölük was accompanied by his son Mr Ataberk Kölük.

It is no longer necessary to be present in the auction room to be completely updated on the latest skin prices. Kopenhagen Fur has recently introduced the Kopenhagen Fur Auction app, whereby one can follow the annual auctions. The data in the app is updated quickly. In fact, viewers can see the sales figures shortly after the gavel has come down. All that is required is a smart phone or tablet with an internet connection. Good overview Apart from the constantly updated sales figures, you can also read auction news, statistics and a listing of when the auctions are being held.

Buyers’ registration – How to register to get your buyer number for the sale: Buyers arriving during inspection or sales are required to register by signing the Buyer’s Register form as early as possible in order to get the buyer number sign and have seats allocated in the auction room. As registration may take some time, please register well in advance of the sales. On inspection days, registration takes place in the Customer Department. On selling days, registration takes place at the Customer Service Counter in front of the auction room.

EMBA graduateS WITH NEW SOCIAL CONTACTS Social contact was in focus when nine Chinese students graduated during the June auction at Kopenhagen Fur. The graduate network is important for future business. By Christian Harpøth
Nine Chinese graduates from the Executive MBA course which Kopenhagen Fur arranges in cooperation with Tsinghua University had a pleasant day at the old, Danish Carlsberg brewery. Kopenhagen Fur had planned a day with a guided tour around the museum, a test in which the participants tasted beer while blindfolded and had a dinner with games. Kopenhagen Fur had planned this event to strengthen the graduates’ social contacts – and, of course, to celebrate their graduation. The purpose of the course is to teach the Chinese students how to market and brand fur in China. According to one of this year’s graduates, Mr Pan Zhi Jun, this skills set is sought after by Chinese companies and needs to be focused on and improved in China. - Manufacturers and retailers in China are behind European standards in

marketing and branding, Mr Pan Zhi Jun says. Therefore, Mr Pan Zhi Jun from Jin Furen, which is the biggest fur retailer in Harbin, is pleased to be a part of the EMBA course. - It is good to learn how to operate in the Chinese fur market. It gives us the opportunity to develop our businesses, he says. Access to network There is more to the EMBA course than to learning to be better at marketing and branding. The network is very important. In the halls of the old Carlsberg brewery, it was easy to scent the strong bond between the students who laughed and enjoyed their time together. Between the courses at the graduation dinner, different games were played: for
example the three teams competed in building the highest tower of spaghetti and marshmallows, which the newly graduated EMBA students took part in with great enthusiasm. - The EMBA course teaches the students about the skin market, but also about marketing and branding. This gives students a solid foundation on which they can build their business. They are also introduced to the auction and shipping procedures, so they understand every aspect of the trade. However, the strongest tool is by far the social network. A strong business relies on a good network. The students are introduced to each other in an environment that is equally formal and professional, as well as fun, so that the bonds they establish now will be carried into the future, says Kenneth Loberg, Deputy CEO of Kopenhagen Fur.

World production of mink decreasing The world production of mink has decreased compared to last year. By Michael Abilon
The production in 2015 is approx. 70 million mink skins. The four major auction houses in the world received an estimated 52 million skins of last year’s production, whereas the world production in 2014 was at approx. 80 million. Denmark accounts for roughly 18 million mink in 2015 and the production remains stable. Danish farmers have

increased their breeding stock slightly and some have shifted their focus from brown mink to mutations and cross types. Stability in Europe and North America The production in Poland is estimated at 9 million skins this year – an increase of 1 million since 2014. In Greece, the production of mink skins remains stable at
approx. 2 million. In the U.S. as well as Canada production has increased slightly, U.S farmers have a production of approx. 4.5 million this year, indicating a slight increase compared to last season. Canadian farmers produced almost 3 million mink this year and, in general, they have mink of good quality.

has experienced a lower price per mink skins on a worldwide level as well as a significant drop in export to the fur retail shops in Russia. Building for the future Of the total world production of mink skins available to the auction houses, Kopenhagen Fur receives the majority.
The great influx of skins means that the Danish auction house has expanded its sorting and storage facilities in Denmark considerably. Furthermore, Kopenhagen Fur is opening warehouses in China that will ease the shipment of skins to this region.

Kopenhagen Fur News takes an inside look at some of the producers and designers that have worked with this department of Kopenhagen Fur. Cathrine Saks and Barbara Potts.
Cool and colourful fur styles became a business idea The Danish company Saks Potts is known as a modern and colourful fur brand, which has attracted great attention and success within two years of existence. By Birthe Willumsga ard Pedersen
The two young entrepreneurs, Cathrine Saks and Barbara Potts, are behind the brand Saks Potts that started in 2013. They had both been looking for a cool and colourful fur style, but had not been able to find it at affordable prices. The need for this specific fur style became their business idea. - Starting up our own company did not seem to be a scary endeavour because we both grew up in families with their own businesses. It simply became our mission to create cool and colourful, outstanding fur styles, says Barbara Potts, co-owner of Saks Potts. The first collection by Saks Potts was called ‘Collection 1’ and it consisted of a series of one-size raccoon jackets in four different colours, which easily attracted attention. In general, Saks Potts’s styles have a more youthful look and image compared to classic fur styles.

- We create styles that we love ourselves. We do not focus on trends but rather on what we consider cool. Fur should be a garment you can use every day, all year round. Therefore, we number our collections instead of naming them for example ‘Autumn Winter 15’, explains Cathrine Saks, co-owner of Saks Potts.
New opportunities In 2014 Saks Potts began cooperating with Kopenhagen Nexus on their third collection called ‘Collection 3’. During Copenhagen Fashion Week In August 2015, Saks Potts launched ‘Collection 4’, which includes four styles created in cooperation with Kopenhagen Fur. - Kopenhagen Nexus has given us new

For example, we only started using mink because Kopenhagen Fur could give us the necessary knowledge and support, says Barbara Potts. Saks Potts has quickly become a well-known brand and the designers have already achieved everything they had ever aspired to, for example being a part of Paris Fashion Week. - We are grateful to Kopenhagen Fur for being a part of our success. We have received a good response to our collections and our cooperation with Kopenhagen Fur, says Cathrine Saks. At our own pace Saks Potts won an award at the Danish fashion show ‘Elle Style Awards’, which resulted in the design duo being featured at Copenhagen Fashion Week earlier this year. - We have received many offers from people and companies wishing to work with us. However, we are still a small company, so we are not ready to say yes to everything. We are evolving our business at our own pace, says Barbara Potts. However, they are both planning to finish their education and afterwards focus entirely on their business. - We would like to keep on developing Saks Potts and our items with new materials and techniques. In ‘Collection 3’ we used mink and fox and in ‘Collection 4’ we have added seal as the new material. We would also like to use Swakara at some point as well. The cooperation with Kopenhagen Fur has meant a lot to Saks Potts. The girls behind the brand explain that it has been one of the best things about the Saks Potts journey. - We are in capable hands with Kopenhagen Fur because of their professionalism and their great support
in developing our styles. We hope to continue the good work together with Kopenhagen Fur, says Barbara Potts. New generation of young designers Julie Maria Iversen, Head of Kopenhagen Nexus, explains that Saks Potts is an innovative brand which represents a new generation of young designers which has great potential. - Saks Potts creates modern designs that are different from classic fur designs. Furthermore, Saks Potts makes good use of their own network and has been able to develop their brand in a short time. The company uses fur skins in a new way and is able to create demand for a new customer group, says Julie Maria Iversen.

Nexus is a department within Kopenhagen Fur’s creative centre, KiCK. Nexus assists fashion and textile brands globally in integrating fur into their collections in order to support global fur demand and product innovation. Nexus undertakes the production management of the fur styles on behalf of the brands. Kopenhagen Nexus outsources the fur production to manufacturers within Kopenhagen Fur’s network, who thereby gain new business through Nexus’ brand partners.

Other sizes will be offered when appropriate numbers of skins are available. The majority of Breeders and Breeders Lowgrades will be offered in June. The offering of skins will be decided and divided between the June and September auctions depending on the supply of skins. Until 45 days before the first arrival, the reservation can be cancelled without any cost. After this date a maximum of 50% of the original reservation can be cancelled after the below mentioned rules: - Until 15 days before the first arrival, 50 % of the original reservation can be cancelled without any cost - Until 10 days before the first arrival, 25 % of the original reservation can be cancelled without any cost - Rooms not cancelled seven days before the first arrival will be charged 100 % Date changes will be accepted without any cost on the condition that the hotel has available rooms on the alternative dates. If the rooms, as a result of lack of available rooms, are cancelled, the hotel refers to the above listed cancellation terms.
