Editorial CONFIDENT ABOUT THE FUTURE
In March, Kopenhagen Fur inaugurated 6,000 square metres of high-tech storage facilities and 3,000 square metres of production facilities. This autumn, an additional 3,000 square metres of production facilities will be ready for use. But that is not all: this year we will also be opening four bonded warehouses in China, the first being scheduled to open in connection with our April auction. All in all, a total investment in buildings and equipment that will enable Kopenhagen Fur to handle and sell up to 40 million mink skins a year in Glostrup. These are very significant investments, but also necessary ones seen in the light of the very large quantities of skins that Kopenhagen Fur has received the past years. However, the investments are also needed for other reasons. In recent years, Kopenhagen Fur has worked committedly to ensure greater transparency and efficiency in the import of skins into China to ensure our customers greater security and reduce the time spent on import procedures; we also hope to reduce customs processing time significantly. In addition, we have developed a payment system that in actual fact removes all risks involved in connection with the financial transactions. We have developed the new systems in close collaboration with some of the world’s soundest companies, Maersk, Shangtex and Nordea Bank. We are convinced that the new system will be of great benefit to our customers and decisively change the way our trade handles logistics. The new system is not only efficient and more secure; there will also be a significant cost reduction in the overall process. The expansions in Glostrup are necessary because we have received a very significant number of skins in recent years. This year, we will be offering approximately 29 million skins compared with 25 million last season. More than 40% of the skins come from abroad, and as the number is steadily increasing, we expect to reach a total offering for the coming season

of close to 31 million skins. There is no doubt that Kopenhagen Fur’s offering of skins is now so large that it represents what could be termed the world market. The competition in our trade is fierce and characterized by fairly small margins. Therefore, it is essential that the price paid for raw mink skins is the real world market price at the time and not a price which is characterized by randomness and local conditions. Obtaining the real world market price requires a large offering at each auction, both in width and in depth. All mink types should be represented in the offering and in large quantities. However, the correct pricing also requires that the demand is represented in the auction room, i.e. that a large number of buyers with a good geographical spread participates in all the auctions. Kopenhagen Fur meets both criteria, which is probably the real reason why Kopenhagen Fur has experienced such significant growth in recent years. Sellers as well as buyers are comfortable with the pricing. Some will rightly argue that the auctions have become too large. We have
tried to make the selling more effective by reducing the number of showlots, but we need to do more. Therefore, we are considering introducing an October auction, as this would ensure that we do not exceed an offering of more than 5 to 6 million skins per auction. An additional auction will also ensure that the world market price is set continuously throughout the year, thereby eliminating uncertainty in the trade. The fur market experiences further price increases By Michael Abilon
The price of mink skins continues the price trend that was initially seen during the January auction when prices increased by 10 percent; during the recent February auction, the average price of mink skins increased by 11 percent. A total of 5.9 million mink skins were up for sale during the February auction and the total turnover reached 2.6 billion DKK. - There was a great demand in the auction room during our February auction where there was keen competition between the customers to get the final bid. Once again, customers from China and Hong Kong dominated the market. The fur trade has made a strong comeback after the crisis last year and, due to the low prices of raw goods, many new customers now see opportunities in the fur trade, says Tage Pedersen, Chairman of Kopenhagen Fur’s Board of Directors. 570 customers attended the auction in Denmark including 300 from China. 80 of

these customers were visiting Denmark for the first time. The demand for fur garments for the Chinese market was assisted by a cold winter and financially strong Chinese consumers. - The current market situation indicates that the number of unsold fur garments is now very low in China. Therefore, my immediate assessment is that the increase in prices at our auction is driven by a real need for a supply of raw skins to Chinese manufacturers, says Tage Pedersen. The sale of fur garments in Europe and USA has also been satisfactory throughout this winter. Europe has experienced a relatively mild winter compared to USA, but fashion trends helped sales figures in Europe. - In USA, they have experienced a cold winter and fashion trends are also an important factor for the sale of fur garments. Therefore, the reports from the American market have been positive, says
Tage Pedersen. The price level at Kopenhagen Fur’s February auction is 5 to 10 percent over the level set by the latest international fur auction at NAFA, the Canadian auction house. - Our offering of mink skins is not surpassed by any other auction house. We collect large quantities of skins and therefore many buyers visit Kopenhagen Fur when they need to purchase mink. This means that the demand is concentrated in our auction room, which results in higher prices. Also, the buyers feel more secure when they purchase skins at our auction house, because the world market price is set here, says Tage Pedersen. Kopenhagen Fur’s total offering in 2015 will be an estimated 29 million skins. This record quantity will expand and consolidate Kopenhagen Fur’s position as the world’s largest auction house for mink.

Celebrating the design talents of the future Late in the cold month of January, Kopenhagen Fur presented ’Imagine Talents 2015’, which is the fur auction house’s latest international design project. During the show, which was held on the evening before the official opening of the Copenhagen Fashion Week 2015, 21 selected design students from Denmark, England, France, Japan, China and Korea presented their visions of future fur designs

in the heart of Copenhagen. More than 800 guests, including prominent names from politics, business, culture, media as well as buyers from around the world, were present when the Danish fur auction house celebrated the talents of the future and their unique interpretation of innovative fur fashion. In recognition of the many different expressions existing in the world of
fashion, three visual themes set the frame in which the students’ designs were presented. A combination of minimalism and futurism characterised the initial theme. Following this, a darker and more dramatically inspired universe with a focus on structure and texture ensued. The third and final theme featured a sporty expression in shades of black and white broken only by a few strong colours.

Building bridges across the world The project intends to link tomorrow’s designers with leading forces in the fur trade through teaching, creative interaction and knowledge sharing. In this way, a bridge between producers, design schools and students is built, which in turn can create good relationships that are crucial to students’ interest in working with fur in the future.

What is ’Imagine?’ Imagine Talents 2015 – The culmination of an initiative spanning over one year, where 21 students, selected from around the world, show off their innovative interpretation of future fur design. The students all come from leading international design schools. At the moment, Kopenhagen Fur has collaboration agreements with: The Royal College of Art (UK), Atelier Chardon Savard (France), Tsinghua University (China), Seoul National University (South Korea), Mode Gakuen Tokyo (Japan), Design School Kolding (Denmark) and VIA Teko Design & Business (Denmark). This collaboration dubbed Imagine Academy introduces design students from some of the

most influential design universities in the world to mink, chinchilla, seal and numerous other skin types. The students then incorporate these skin types into their own designs. Teachers from the above-mentioned schools have visited ‘Kopenhagen Studio’, Kopenhagen Fur’s creative workshop, in Denmark to learn about the auction house and to study furrier techniques to learn more about the possibilities fur offers. Upon returning to their home countries, these teachers have set up fur workshops at their respective schools. The schools’ national fur workshops have later been visited by one of Kopenhagen Studio’s furriers who held a one-week master class in fur
design and techniques. All the students attending the school’s fur courses were encouraged to apply for a place at ‘Imagine Talents’ at Copenhagen Fashion Week – but only the three most talented students from each school were chosen by Kopenhagen Fur to have their personal fur style made and shown at the event. The production of the design students’ fur styles brought the designers in contact with selected manufacturers. This is the third and final part of Imagine; namely the Imagine Manufacturer Programme, which ensures that relations are established between design students and manufacturers prior to the students’ graduation.

Bought Top Lot to celebrate anniversary Gordon Woo from Simon Woo’s manufacturing company Europe Fur Co. Ltd. from Hong Kong bought the Top Lot of Palomino Velvet males on the first day of Kopenhagen Fur’s February auction.

After years of buying mink and Swakara skins at Kopenhagen Fur, Mr Şevket Yusufogullarii was finally ready to bring home the finest of Chinchillas to his factory Shaky Fur and Leather in Istanbul, Turkey. - Chinchilla is not an easy skin type to work with and you need some practice with fur in general before you start working with Chinchilla. But my employees in the factory are trained and ready for this project. From this Top Lot I will make a beautiful jacket for one of the daughters of the late King of Saudi Arabia, Mr Yusufogullari says.
Top Lot Chinchilla for the Saudi Arabian Royals Soon a princess, wearing a Chinchilla fur jacket made of skins from Kopenhagen Fur’s auction, will be seen in the Palace of the late Saudi Arabian King. Mr Şevket Yusufogullari bought the Chinchilla Top Lot during the January auction and from that he will make a jacket for the Princess of Saudi Arabia.

Mr Yusufogullari has a very close relationship with The Royal Family of Saudi Arabia and he has made garments for them for many years. This time, he wants to make something very special and he finds that they deserve nothing less than a Top Lot. - It means a great deal to me, that I can tell The Royal Family, that I made this jacket from a Top Lot. To me that is a great honour, Mr Yusufogullari says. The Chinchilla Top Lot was sold on the first day of the January auction at Kopenhagen Fur for 750 DKK per skins.

A dream come true After 10 years in the fur business, it was a dream come true when Mr Min Xuebin was able to purchase the Palomino Velvet Female Top Lot on the first day of the January auction. However, he did not stop there, he also purchased a second Top Lot. Since he opened his factory in Tong Er Pu, it has been his ambition and a personal dream to purchase a Top Lot. He finally achieved this long-term vision, when he bought the Palomino Velvet Female Top Lot at 740 DKK per skin. - I am very pleased to take this Top Lot home - it is a great honour for me. Ever since I started in this business, I have wanted to buy a Top Lot. Now my dream has come true, says Mr Min Xuebin, HAAH Fur. - It is a very good advertisement for our brand and we will use this Top Lot to promote our business, he continues. Mr Min Xuebin plans to present the skins in his shop as a symbol of top quality fur skins. In this way, his customers can see what a Top Lot looks like. He has not decided yet, whether to send the lot to the factory, or to keep it as a memory of a beautiful dream that come true.
Bought a second Top Lot However, Mr Min Xuebin did not stop there. He also purchased a second Top Lot. - A very great honour, he says about buying the White Velvet Male Top Lot at 960 DKK per skin. - I was making plans for purchasing these two Top Lots before I went to the auction and it is indeed a very great honour to be standing here with the skins in my hand, Mr Xuebin continues. Back in China, Mr Xuebin had champagne with his staff to celebrate his two Top Lots. The bundles of the magnificent Top Lots will be shown in a glass case in one of the HAAH Fur retail shops for customers to admire.

Top lot to promote Danish quality During the February auction, the Top Lot in Black Velvet Females was bought for a very important reason - to promote Danish quality fur in a specific area of China.

- Our customers only want the very best quality, and I know this Top Lot will meet their expectations perfectly, says Frank Sun. After years of development, the company has grown into a great fur clothing company. They are now the leading manufacturers of fur garments in the Xinji area in China. News in brief The theatre also has a rich history, spanning over 200 years. Pantomime came to Denmark from Italy in 1800 at a time when it was widely performed all over Europe, mostly by travelling troupes of actors. Naturally, Tivoli also wished to introduce this fashionable entertainment, which has been a tradition since 1843. However, pantomime did not become a permanent part of Tivoli’s repertoire until 1873.

Easier payments for buyers Customers are now able to pay in Chinese currency at the auctions in Copenhagen, which is a new payment option for our customers. A Currency Project Manager has been hired specifically to improve the CNY payment process. Many customers may notice a new face in Kopenhagen Fur’s Customer Department. This is Qiqi Kong Madsen, who has recently joined the Danish auction house and is looking forward to assisting our customers that would like to make payments in CNY. The earlier practice was that Chinese customers had to exchange their money to USD or EUR, and then Kopenhagen Fur converted USD or EUR into DKK for the payment, which meant that Chinese customers had to pay for double transactions. This process was long and resource-consuming. By making it possible for Chinese customers to simply pay in their own currency, they will have a lower exchange risk and more resources to focus on their core business.
Just as in silent movies, actors in pantomime theatres use a special form of sign language, instead of dialogue, combined with graceful movements. The Pantomime Theatre operates in the summer season, and a majority of the performers are employed at the Royal Ballet the rest of the year.
- For our Chinese customers who don’t have foreign currency income or reserve, there is an advantage in paying in their own currency, says Qiqi Kong Madsen, Currency Project Manager. - I am very happy to be given this responsibility. As many global banks expected, CNY has become one of the major currencies. Our customers should also be able to make payments in CNY. So I am very pleased that we now, can provide our customers with an even better service, says Brian Tufvesson, Head of Customer Department. Over the years, several Chinese customers have requested the option to pay in CNY, so Brian Tufvesson hopes that many Chinese customers will choose this new option. Strong political support for Greenlandic hunters By Michael Abilon
Danish designer Jesper Høvring presented his collection at The Stock Exchange, a beautiful, old building in the centre of Copenhagen. Here, among stately pillars and elaborate wood carvings, a broad segment of Danish politicians were present to see the latest trends in sealskin fashion and to support Great Greenland as well as the Inuit hunters. - I know of Jesper Høvring because he designed my wife’s wedding dress, said Morten Østergaard, Minister for Economic Affairs and the Interior, after the show. - The collection made by Jesper Høvring is amazing - clothes that are not for grand festivities but rather for everyday use, he added. Astrid Krag, MP, also present at the show, was particularly fond of the sealskin designs. -They suit me, she said. Strong support But even though the catwalk was the primary reason for their attendance, Danish politicians spanning from left to right of the political spectre were eager to show their support for the Inuit hunters.

- I think it’s a pity that Greenlandic sealskins have a poor image around the world. It is very unfair, when you consider the origin of these skins and what they mean to Greenlandic hunter communities, said Astrid Krag. Johan Lund Olsen, MP for Greenland, who was also present at the show, has a Greenlandic background. He was pleased with the turnout and was eager to show his support. - We cannot do without sealskins in Greenland. As these skins are our livelihood this show is actually very important for hunters in outer settlements in Greenland, he said. Sealskin as a product was also praised by another MP, Torsten Schack Pedersen. - Sealskin is an excellent product that still requires promotion, but I have no doubt that sealskins will benefit from this show because of its many possibilities, he said. Mai Mercado, MP, emphasized that sealskins represent an important export for Greenland and therefore also for Denmark. - We should all support this cause and I hope that Great Greenland’s
collaboration with Jesper Høvring will make more people interested in sealskin, she added. Hopes for the future It is crucial for Inuits in Greenland that their skins are in demand. This realization was also apparent to the many politicians present at the show who expressed wishes that sealskins would become increasingly more popular. - I hope that this show and the design collaboration between Jesper Høvring and Great Greenland will result in an increase in the demand for sealskins, because attention to this product is generated by demonstrating its versatility. That is why it is also important that various designers continue to work with this skin type, said Lone Loklindt, MP. - Hopefully, the continued use of sealskins can provide a needed boost to Greenlandic economy. They have many challenges in Greenland but their work with sealskins has been one of their strengths for centuries. I hope that the collaboration with Jesper Høvring will make more people wear garments made of sealskins, said Morten Østergaard.

Nexus Portrait: Nexus works to bridge the gaps that exist between the people in the skin trade, fashion industry and fur production. But who can benefit from working with Kopenhagen Nexus? Kopenhagen Fur News takes an inside look at some of the producers that have worked with this department of Kopenhagen Fur.
Working with Nexus took me to a new level Kostas Tzimas worked with Kopenhagen Nexus on several major projects last year. He believes the collaboration has lifted his business and improved his own network. By Michael Abilon
Elise Gug, SOS Sportswear, Yeti, House of Amber, J. Lindeberg and Julie Brandt: Kostas Tzimas’ company was selected as the manufacturer for all of these high profile brands. His company produced various fur garments for all of these companies in 2014 and these business connections were all established with the help of Kopenhagen Nexus. Kostas Tzimas has been a part of the fur trade since his early childhood, learning from his father Miltos Tzimas. He started his own manufacturing company in the late 80’s and, some years after that, he established a business as a skin buyer in 1996. However, after approx. 10 years he returned to the world of skin manufacturing. He had missed this line of work and, when he returned, he had many visions about fur designs. What he lacked was connections with creative designers

and brands. Then he was made aware of Kopenhagen Nexus: Kopenhagen Fur’s bridge building department, which specializes in connecting designers and fashion brands with skin manufacturers, as
well as sales platforms. - I wanted the designs of fur garments to be progressive in order to reach out to the new generation of fur consumers. In my opinion, the designs of fur garments

had reached a stalemate, so we needed to reinvent fur fashion. Nexus offered me a new perspective on fur garments and an opportunity to work with innovative designers, he says. - At that time, my company primarily produced fur garments for the Russian market, but Nexus offered us an opportunity to make them for the European market. They want to connect us with designers that produce fur garments for modern consumers, and it is necessary to continuously update fur designs to make them contemporary, he states. - These new designers teach us manufacturers new things, things that we couldn’t imagine making. The collaboration with KiCK and Nexus has therefore been very productive; it has taken me a level up. - In Kopenhagen Nexus we strive to bridge the gaps that may exist between designers in the fashion industry and manufacturers in fur production. Our department exists because, a long time ago, Kopenhagen Fur realized that it could be challenging for fashion designers or fur producers to find suitable business partners. Naturally, our auction house wants consumers to desire fur garments, and we ensure this demand when people see it on the catwalks and in the streets. Greek dressing and dyeing firm takes the lead Rainwater and sunlight are important resources when raw skins are turned into soft fur skins at Naoum Ditsios’ dressing and dyeing plant in Kastoria, Greece. His company is the frontrunner in the world when it comes to environmental friendliness in the sector. By Heidi Cecilie Lorvik
The DTS SA dressing and dyeing plant is ‘state of the art’, clinically clean glass and concrete building. In front of the building there is a huge plantation of solar panels and likewise on the roof of the building. All day long, they soak up the sunlight and turn it into electricity. To the left of the building, there is a large basin with rainwater and snowmelt from the mountains supplying DTS SA with more than half of the water needed for processing the skins. Naoum Ditsios proudly gives a tour explaining with a lot of gesticulation and enthusiasm all the hightech machines and processes that are the most advanced in the sector worldwide. - It is a closed system. Neither sewage nor waste leaves the factory and organic waste is burned. Two gratings with sewage hold different wastewater separated so it can be purified. Mr Ditsios opens the door to a room where an employee is in the process of hanging wet, white mink skins in long lines.

He explains that they use dehydration to dry the skins in order to save power and the method has reduced the electricity consumption by 60 percent. However, solar panels heat the water and a tower for cooling the water uses 90 percent less energy than conventional methods. REACH is a challenge These and many more ideas by Mr Ditsios and his valued employees have ensured DTS SA recognition of the EU EcoInnovation Observatory in their annual country report. However, right now he is working hard to be ready for the third stage of the EU REACH legislation for chemicals, which will be effectuated in 2018. Mr Ditsios has hired two chemists who are working hard to develop methods that require a minimum of chemicals to dye larger quantities of skins and to find more eco-friendly versions to replace the existing substances. - I am part of the quality control where
I check whether the process is using the optimum temperature, pH value and so on. Right now I am working on a new, more environment-friendly way to whiten skins and I am constantly looking for suppliers who can deliver substances that are more environment-friendly and meet the REACH

Better tomorrow than today For Naoum Ditsios, REACH is an opportunity to glue the whole sector together and raise the level by sharing knowledge and learning from each other. - In Greece, we say that every challenge provides a new solution. At the same time, we are reluctant to share knowledge with competitors because we think it makes us weaker. But REACH applies to all of us, so we will have to work together across firms and countries to reach our goal. At DTS SA, we will never stop even if we are better than the legislation. My philosophy is that you have to be better tomorrow than you are today. for themselves in terms of saved electricity and water consumption etc. Besides, green is the only way for Mr Ditsios. - Unlike the massively polluting faux fur, real fur is an organic and eco-friendly material. It is important for me that my firm reflects and respects the nature of the
material. It was the most important thing for me when we built the new factory. It is also important for me to respect the environment around the company. It is a holistic approach that one is conscious about the environment both as an individual and at the workplace.
REACH and IFDDA • REACH is EU’s comprehensive chemicals management legislation to ensure the safe production, handling and use of a chemical with manufacturers, importers and users. Countries outside the EU also have to comply with the rules if they want to have goods imported into the EU. • IFDDA, International Fur Dressers and Dyers Association, was created in Europe in 2011 to set the standard for a responsible, uniform and environmentfriendly processing of skins. The goal is to stand together as sector and ensure that everyone complies with REACH legislation and even go beyond. IFDDA’s goal is to make a qualitative description of the environmental impacts (water, waste, atmospheric emissions, energy consumption) of the dressing and dyeing of fur for the benefit of the whole sector and thus the entire fur business. IFDDA’s first sustainability report will be ready in December 2015.
