EDITORIAL WE HAVE A COMMON DESTINY WITH THE GREENLANDIC HUNTERS

Recently, I had the pleasure of extending the sales agreement between Kopenhagen Fur and Great Greenland, thus beginning a new chapter, which involves the continued sale of seal skins at our auctions, international marketing and a joint focus on the political struggle that must be pursued in the European Union. It is no secret that I believe that Greenlandic hunters are trapped by an unreasonable prohibition dictated by Brussels. A policy that may give Greenlandic hunters the right to sell their seal skins, but in reality it has torpedoed the market for the sale of seal. It is a policy that is dictated by prejudice. Dictated by the notion that the seal is an endangered animal. Every time I am confronted with such a statement, I ask the question: `There are more than 30 species of seal in our oceans. Which exact species is endangered? While it is true, that the Hawaiian Monk Seal is endangered, it is not likely that you will find that particular seal in the North Atlantic by the coasts of Greenland. Let us make it clear once again. Neither the Ringed Seal nor the Harp Seal, which are the species that the Greenlandic hunters hunt the most, are endangered. On the contrary, their numbers are so abundant, that they put immense pressure on Greenland’s fishing trade. The hunting culture of the Inuit people of Greenland is equally under immense pressure unless the parliamentarians in the EU gain a more realistic perspective on seal hunting in Greenland and the sale of seal skins. With the continuation of this agreement, we have the opportunity to focus on the debate in the EU. Together, we can remind the Union of the promises

they made in the autumn of 2015. During that time, the Inuit of Greenland were promised an EU-information campaign, intended to inform about the Inuit exception, which gives them the right to sell their seal skins - and this is required. Make no mistake. Everyone in the fur trade have a common destiny with the Greenlandic hunters. The fact, that the European Parliament adopted such a thoughtless piece of legislation, where they put such a green and sustainable product under pressure, means that we all have to ask ourselves: `What could be next?´ The trade must cooperate to make seal skins a success. Kopenhagen Fur will initially do this by supporting the political struggle. In the world of fashion, we must also work to make seal more visible. Seal fashion must drive demand, which was a strategy that we focused on in 2013 when we first began our cooperation with Great Greenland. Our furriers in Kopenhagen

Studio began working with seal skins and presented them to Danish and international designers. Over the last few years, we have seen the fruits of our labour. Most recently during Copenhagen Fashion Week 2016, where seal skins were used on the catwalks by recognized designers such as Freya Dalsjø, Mark Tan and Jesper Høvring. This demand in the world of fashion generates attention and provides us with opportunities that can be used politically. The struggle for the Greenlandic seal skins will be long and it has to be won one consumer at the time. But even though it may seem insurmountable due to the widespread misconceptions regarding seal and seal hunting, I shall allow myself to remain hopeful on behalf of the Greenlandic people.

IMAGINE TALENTS 2016: THE RESULT OF COOPERATION ACROSS BORDERS In February, Kopenhagen Fur presented ”Imagine Talents 2016”, the fur auction house’s newest international design project focused on fur innovation. BY MICHAEL ABILON

28 design students from around the world presented their vision of future fur designs at this big event at the domicile of the Confederation of Danish Industry in central Copenhagen. More than 500 guests, including prominent figures from politics, companies and culture as well as journalists from around the world, were present when Kopenhagen Fur celebrated the design talents and their views on future fur fashion. Among the guests were Chinese ambassador, Mr Liu Biwei, and his wife, Mrs Fang Chun. - Having Ambassador Liu Biwei visit our show is an honour. He and his wife enjoyed it very much and it was a pleasure to entertain them. The fact that they attended is a good example of the strong

relationship that exists between Denmark and China, says Tage Pedersen, Chairman of Kopenhagen Fur. EXPANDING HORIZONS Imagine Talents is an initiative with a crossborder innovation focus. It is a strategic cooperation with world-leading design universities and fur manufacturers. The initiative aims to link tomorrow’s designers with the leading forces in the fur trade through teaching, creative interaction and knowledge sharing. This way, bridges are built between producers, schools and students, creating good relationships that are crucial to students’ interest in working with fur in the future. - It was a pleasure to watch; there is an

enormous creativity present. Also, it was quite fun talking to the designers and learning what they intended with their designs, said Eva Kjer Hansen, Danish Minister of Environment and Food and added: - I believe that it is very rewarding for the students that they have an opportunity to meet and transcend borders while working. I believe that it expands their horizons and provides them with better opportunities for choosing future paths. Eva Kjer Hansen held a speech before the show began where she welcomed the Chinese delegation that attended the fashion show. The minister emphasised that cross-border relationships are of tremendous benefit to all involved parties.

- Trade and cooperation across borders make everyone richer, both economically and culturally, she said and added: - China has taken great interest in Danish fur; more than 80 percent of our fur export goes to the “Kingdom in the Middle” and the interest is repaid. Since 2007, Kopenhagen Fur has cooperated with Tsinghua University in Beijing to help educate the next generation of designers. RETHINKING DESIGNS IS A CONTINUOUS PROCESS Michael Stadi, Head of KiCK, Kopenhagen Fur’s creative centre, elaborating on the purpose of Imagine, said that the initiative is also about demonstrating to the entire fashion industry how fur can be used.

- The fur designs of the 28 design talents show the great creativity and potential inherent in fur innovation and fur’s potentials in international fashion.

We look forward to the process where we continuously rethink our design approach - both in Denmark and internationally, he says.

FACTS ABOUT THE IMAGINE TALENTS SHOW The objective of ‘Imagine Talents’ - a global design project created by Kopenhagen Fur in 2014 - is to facilitate a cooperation between the fur trade and future designers. The project is targeted at the major design universities worldwide, which are offered a comprehensive strategic cooperation with Kopenhagen Fur that includes classes in fur technique, cooperation with some of the world’s best furriers and a unique opportunity to display the design students’ talents at a big show during Copenhagen Fashion Week. Design students from Denmark, England, France, Japan, China, Korea, Russia, Kazakhstan and Greece participated in the show this February.

BUYING A CHINCHILLA FUR COAT IS LIKE BUYING A SPORTS CAR

A MEANINGFUL EXPERIENCE For Mr Yingli Ai, buying his first Top Lot Silverblue Cross Females at Kopenhagen Fur, it was truly a special event.

Hüsein Fauoḡlu Serdal Doḡan from the company Punto was the buyer of the Chinchilla Top Lot sold at Kopenhagen Fur’s February auction for 620 DKK per skin.

- I have been a customer at Kopenhagen Fur for 10 years now, but this is the first time I have purchased a Top Lot, so it is a meaningful experience, says Mr Yingli Ai.

- I am very proud to be the owner of these beautiful skins, he says in the auction room at Kopenhagen Fur. The skins will be displayed in the flagship store in Antalya.

He is a successful businessman with five fur shops in China and believes that the Top Lot will fit in nicely with his shops. He intends to use the skins for a fur coat that will be displayed as a sign of prestige and quality for his customers to admire.

- The reason for this is simple. We want our customers to see the skins on display; any potential buyer can then select the design they want, he explains. Hüsein Fauoḡlu Serdal Doḡan emphasizes that Chinchilla is a type of skins for special customers. - I recall that Stig Reinhold, the Chinchilla auctioneer, once said that Chinchilla fur garments are for the buyers that want something special after having bought five mink jackets. It is no different than owning many ordinary cars, then your sixth should be a sports car, he says. The company Punto is no stranger to Kopenhagen Fur. Hüsein Fauoḡlu Serdal Doḡan has been purchasing skins in Denmark for approx. 15 years. Punto intends to return to Denmark to attend Kopenhagen Fur’s April auction.

- It was fortunate that I could purchase the Silverblue Cross Females; because these are the skins I desired the most. I will use them for a beautiful fur coat that will be displayed in my shops in China. I purchased the Top Lot because I wanted the finest quality. High-quality skins will attract customers, he says. Mr Yingli Ai owns the company Wei Dai Er Fur, which has stores located in Shenyang, Harbin, Dalian and Changzhou. The Silverblue Cross Female Top Lot was purchased for 760 DKK per skin.

CHINCHILLA TOP LOT FOR HIGH FASHION Chinchilla Top Lot buyer Mr Coşkun Kölük wants to increase the knowledge of fur in Turkey. According to him, there is no better way to be a good example for his colleagues than buying the Top Lot. The first day of the January auction offered the Chinchilla Top Lot, which was sold to Mr Coşkun Kölük. It is not his first Top Lot. He is rather addicted to high quality because he believes it is important to make a good example in his country through his family company,Tasari Kürkmod - also known as GATA FUR. - Turkey is known for its leather, but I think the country still needs to learn a lot about fur. I want to be a frontrunner and present the best Chinchilla quality to my countrymen, he says. Rough times should not stop the buying For the last couple of years the fur market has had a rough time. Therefore, it is important for Mr Kölük to support the trade. - We can’t all stop buying fur in difficult times. If we do so, the market will slow down, and then the farmers won’t be able to produce high quality fur for us, he says. Mr Kölük’s Top Lot will soon become a short jacket which will be suitable for all seasons. The intention is to present Chinchilla to the fashion world. Mr Kölük will take the fur to the fashion exhibition in Hong Kong and later on the jacket will be found in his shops in Istanbul.

The Chinchilla Top Lot price ended at 690 DKK per skin.

WHITE VELVET MALES TOP LOT WILL BECOME SHOWCASE Mr Liu, who represents Baìan Mìlan Fur Center of China, bought the White Velvet Males Top Lot for 940 DKK per skin. Having been in the fur trade for approximately 15 years, Mr Liu soon recognized the remarkable quality of the White Velvet Males, which became the deciding factor. The Top Lot from the January auction will not result in fur garments made for retail purposes. Planning to display the skins as showcases, a group of top designers will be invited to create something spectacular and beautiful; a display of fur garments made from the best quality skins to illustrate to the customers that, when producing garments, quality is of paramount importance. - We studied the different Top Lots and quickly found that the White Velvet Males were the most desirable for their outstanding quality, a quality is everything for us. We want to show our customers that we only deal in quality fur and that is why we decided to purchase the Top Lot. We are all very excited to see the beautiful garments made by the designers; we will invite designers to work with the Top Lot, says Mr Liu. Once the fur garments have been created, they will be displayed in the store windows for everyone to see. By purchasing the Top Lot at the January auction Mr Liu has taken another step closer to his ambition. - Regarding future auctions, I would like to buy more Top Lots in different colours. The fur garments produced from these will also be put on display in my store window. It is important to me that my customers know about the good quality of my garments, says Mr Liu.

NEWS IN BRIEF NEW AGREEMENT BETWEEN KOPENHAGEN FUR AND GREAT GREENLAND Late in February, Great Greenland and Kopenhagen fur renewed their cooperation. This ensures the continued sale and marketing of Greenlandic sealskins.

- These last few years have been hard for the

Greenlandic seal hunters and for Great Greenland. We hope that this continued cooperation with Kopenhagen Fur will bring sealskins back into the light and increase demand. Kopenhagen Fur has an unparalleled connection with customers and designers and we are very pleased that the auction house has made this agreement with us, says Ditte SorknĂŚs, CEO of Great Greenland. Kopenhagen Fur initially began its cooperation with Great Greenland in 2013 and with this new agreement, this cooperation will continue for two additional years.

The Top Lot he purchased during the February auction was Brown Velvet Males at a price of 720 DKK per skin. - In the 90s, my grandfather started in the fur trade, and when my father was in charge, he did not buy the Top Lots, so the reason why I have now bought a Top Lot is to contribute to the fur trade and to show the quality of fur. It will also give me better business opportunities, says Mr Cui Hingxin.

TOP LOT BUYER: A FUR COAT FOR MY FATHER Mr Cui Hongxin is going to use his Top Lot for fur coats, one of which is for his father.

He is a manufacturer and retailer for Hong Man Qi Fur Fashion with shops in Shenyang, where they sell fur coats. - First of all, I am going to use some of the skins for a fur coat for my father, but I am not yet sure what the rest will be used for. That depends on my designers, says Mr Cui Hingxin.

BUYING A TOP LOT FOR THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR Mr Min Xuebin bought a Top Lot at the January auction 2015. This year he did it again, when he made the highest bid for the Brown Velvet Female Top Lot, resulting in a sales price of 510 DKK per skin. With the purchase of the Palomino Velvet Top Lot at the January auction 2015 coupled with this year’s Brown Velvet Female Top Lot, Mr Min Xuebin is well underway in his ambition to collect the

- My aim is to have a Top Lot in every colour there is. Buying the Brown Velvet Female Top Lot is just the next step in doing so. Owning Top Lots is important to me and signifies that we only deal in the best quality skins. It is a symbol and sends the message to customers that we only use the best quality skins to produce the fur garments which they buy and wear, says Mr Min Xuebin. Owning yet another Top Lot ensures that the AIFEIMI company will grow and distinguish itself from the competition creating a steady growth in customers who appreciate fur garments made from skins of the very best quality. - I bought these skins because they are the best in the world, and I look forward to seeing the garments made from them. I want to produce something beautiful to show my customers and in order to do so I need the best quality. Producing garments from Top Lots is something I wish to continue to do. Eventually, I will have garments made from Top Lots of every colour, says Mr Min Xuebin.

STANDING OVATIONS AT GREAT GREENLAND’S FASHION SHOW Danish designer Jesper Høvring presented his collection during Copenhagen Fashion Week 2016. Danish politicians and celebrities as well as international media had nothing but praise for the new collection. BY MICHAEL ABILON

At the prestigious Hotel D’Angleterre in the heart of Copenhagen, Jesper Høvring presented his Great Greenland collection. The elegant designs were well matched with the classic setting of the hotel. Ms Ditte Sorknæs, CEO of Great Greenland, attended the presentation of the collection. - The show was amazing and the response from the audience makes it clear that Jesper Høvring was the perfect choice for our collection this year, she says.

Marcus Knuth, the Chairman of the Greenlandic Committee, was also present. After the show he said: - It is a wonderful way to see how one can use seal skins in a beautiful fashion and also to see such a broad support for Greenland from Denmark’s business communities, politicians and organisations. A REVOLUTIONARY LOOK The collection caused a great deal of excitement among the guests.

- I find it amazing that Jesper Høvring has reinvented seal skins. They were incredibly beautiful creations. I think he has done an absolutely amazing job. I kept wondering: ‘Are those really made from seal skins?’ In my eyes, he has revolutionized the use of seal skins completely; from boots to hunting clothes and to formal occasions, where one can feel incredibly feminine when wearing them, said Christiane Schaumburg Müller, Danish TV-host and actress.

The strategy for 2016 is to focus more on correcting misinformation about the trade in the media and among politicians. We want to ensure that politicians and consumers base their decisions based on facts.

NEW FOCUS IN FUR EUROPE The European trade organisation has a new director and a new strategy. After several years of achievements on an EU level, Fur Europe will begin targeting individual countries. BY HEIDI CECILIE LORVIK

Mette Lykke Nielsen is a well-known name to many in the fur trade. In 2012, she began working as Head of Public Affairs in the European Fur Breeders Association (EFBA), the predecessor of Fur Europe. Here, she also oversaw the International Fur Fedaration’s (IFF) work, which focused on promoting the fur trade’s interests in EU. On 2 February this year, she was appointed Director of Fur Europe. - I know the trade and I know the challenges we are facing. I have a good overview of what is happening on a national level and I believe that this is a great benefit. Over the last four years, I have built close relationships with our members. Sometimes, we come up with many good ideas in Brussels, but nothing can become of them if our members do not support them and are aware of what is at stake. Therefore, listening to the members and making sure that their concerns are taken seriously on a

European level is still a large part of my workday. It is important that our members understand the value of having an office in Brussels that coordinates the EU effort, says Mette Lykke Nielsen. CORRECTING MISINFORMATION Mette Lykke Nielsen is responsible for promoting the fur trade’s interests in EU and informing politicians in Brussels about the trade. It has been such a success that it is now time to shift focus. The work must be carried out on a national level and the effort of the membership organizations must be strengthened. - The strategy for 2016 is to focus more on correcting misinformation about the trade in the media and among politicians. We want to ensure that politicians and consumers base their decisions based on facts. That is why we want an even stronger voice in the

public debate and strengthen our political network. I have seen how important it is to have a strong political network and to have the support of other sectors. The fur trade is no different from other agricultural sectors. We even know that animal rights organizations most likely will not stop with a ban on fur production but rather shift their focus towards another form of production. This makes it important to continue building alliances on a national level and on an EU level. SUPPORT FOR WELFUR IN THE COMMISSION The strategy in Fur Europe has primarily been to maintain focus on the EUlevel to gain support from the European Commission. Now it is time to move on. - We have achieved support. If an EU-parliamentarian asks the Commission about mink and fox animal welfare, the Commission always refers to the WelFur programme. So now, they consider us

as a sector, comparable to other sectors, and they are actually using WelFur as best practice. We are still working on a legislative frame for animal welfare that is common for the entire agricultural sector, including fur. However, it is an important step that WelFur is acknowledged on a political level, she says. AHEAD OF THE ACTIVISTS Welfur has made it difficult for animal rights activists to deceive politicians in EU, so they are now using different methods. - Whenever we participate in debates in the EU-parliament, animal rights activists are now publicly saying that they know that they cannot win the debate over the fur trade on an EU-level. Therefore, they now seek to use the same strategy, they employed years ago, which lead to the ban on sealskins. This strategy involved a focus on individual countries. It is of little concern if a country has a large or a small

fur production. For instance, the region of Wallonia in Belgium does not have a single fur farm, but here they managed to gain support for a fur ban. This means they can put another mark on the European map. We must respond to this and this is achieved by having an active role in the public debate. FUR FASHION HELPS Generally, Mette Lykke Nielsen believes that the fur trade has a strong position in the EU. Fur Europe’s political work and the effort put in by the member states have helped. However, it is equally important that fur fashion is present on catwalks and on the streets of every major capital. - Contrary to previous fashion trends, we are now seeing a strong presence of fur in the world of fashion, and it is always beneficial to have fur on catwalks and on the streets. The acceptance of fur becomes greater that way. We may have political struggles ahead, but they

are not impossible to win because of that acceptance, she says. THE SAME OVERALL FOCUS As the Director of Fur Europe, Mette Lykke Nielsen looks forward to facing the challenges in the fur trade, both old and new. - Now, the new challenge is that I am responsible for the entire economical aspect and I have to look at the entire trade and not simply my own political work. However, this does not change my overall focus, which is to ensure the political survival of the fur trade in the EU. I am often asked: `Who will you focus on? The farmers or the retailers? Whom will you support more? But my work does not revolve around the sale of fur skins or garments, even though I hope consumers will buy a lot of fur. My work revolves around creating the best possible environment for the fur market as a whole.

FOCUS ON A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE Chris Cui, newly appointed President of Kopenhagen Fur China, was given a place in the Swedish Institute Management Programme, a highly sought-after training course that only accepts 30 out of over 200 applicants a year. BY MICHAEL ABILON

The Swedish Institute Management Programme focuses on sustainable business strategies and responsible leadership. The programme, which is supported by the Swedish Government, specifically revolves around young business leaders from fast-growing Asian countries. - I am very pleased that I have been given this opportunity to be taught at the Swedish Institute Management Programme. The programme was recommended to me by a business contact here in Beijing, says Chris Cui, President of Kopenhagen Fur China. She did not expect to be accepted, due to the small number of applicants that are accepted to the programme, so it was a great surprise when she was given a place.

- The programme offers an extraordinary insight into one particular challenge facing China: sustainability. The economic growth in China is slowing down and this affects the business environment, the consumer behaviour and thereby many companies interacting on this market. - The quality of growth has never been so important and the economic conditions that have created past successes for many industries and companies in China now need to shift focus in the future. Sustainable retail products, sustainable manufacturing procedures and sustainable raw products are all hot topics in China due to consumers increasing their awareness of buying items of good quality with value for money, she says.

COMMUNICATION IN THE FUTURE Fur is a sustainable product. With proper care, a fur garment can last for 30 years in a wardrobe and even longer if the owner takes good care of it. In addition, the production of mink skins in Denmark involves an environmental focus because, after the mink is pelted, the fat is used for biofuel. A fuel type that, when used in proper engines, has a reduced carbon emission compared with ordinary fuel. A green product and a green economic cycle during the production are key strengths for the Danish fur business. According to Chris Cui, having a product that promotes sustainability in different ways can be a major benefit in China because it is possible to brand fur and differentiate Kopenhagen Fur in a

more creative way. - The shifting trends in China mean that consumers are likely to value the sustainable aspects of fur. This is an opportunity that we are ready to embrace by focusing our communication and showing how fur can be a necessary or complimentary component in the modern green lifestyle of China, she says. The Swedish Institute Management Programme will take place in Singapore in April, when managers from all over the world will gather and share knowledge about their respective challenges and work areas, all revolving around sustainability and leadership. - One of the greatest benefits is that I am able to meet with other trade leaders

from different countries and discuss the challenges and opportunities that they face. I believe that I can draw much inspiration from the fact that we face similar challenges but have an opportunity to offer each other different solutions, says Chris Cui. A DAY WITH JIM LYNGVILD AND CHINESE FASHION EXPERTS Kopenhagen Fur and the eccentric Danish designer Jim Lyngvild invited a delegation of Chinese fashion experts on a cultural PR trip to Lejre, a Danish historical town, and the island of Funen early in February, which resulted in an unforgettable experience for everyone. BY NIKOLAJ BABIS NIELSEN

Early in February, a minibus from Hotel SP34 in Copenhagen set off on what was to become a special trip for a Chinese fashion delegation. The delegation visited Denmark for a five day period, when they experienced Copenhagen Fashion Week together with the Danish designer Jim Lyngvild. The Chinese guests enjoyed a cup of coffee in the hotel lobby before departure. What they didn’t know was that the day would become a culture crash of dimensions. The guests were from the Chinese fashion magazine ELLE, YouGo, the Chinese equivalent of YouTube, and also one of China’s most well-known fashion bloggers. Jim Lyngvild is helping Kopenhagen Fur

set up their show during Shanghai Fashion Week in April, a show which includes a lot of fur, and is based on Denmark’s ancient Viking history. This theme is one of the reasons why Kopenhagen Fur invited the Chinese guests. The guests are used to being invited to various events when going to fashion shows in the usual fashion cities, but they have not been informed about the plan for the day. Jim Lyngvild is a very colourful character and had put together a programme for the day, which in no way could be compared with a standard tourist event at the Eiffel Tower in Paris or Duomo di Milano. However, thinking out of the box, it turned out to be a very good idea.

VIKING FOOD AND PEWTER JEWELLERY The first destination was Lejre, far away from catwalks and haute couture. In this old town, once inhabited by Danish Vikings, there is a Viking museum and a reconstruction of a Viking village. Jim Lyngvild is a great fan of Danish heritage and therefore wanted to show the guests a bit of Danish history. The guests were welcomed by employees, dressed in Viking clothing, who took the guests for a short trip through the beautiful countryside. Even though the sun was shining, it was quite cold, so naturally the guests were served a hot Viking meal, a meat stew with vegetables and bread. The guests had to bake their own bread and they were really excited about it. The

lunch was served in wooden bowls with wooden cutlery, and the table was set with a Viking helmet, an axe and Viking armour – all of which the Chinese guests had to try on. To make it as authentic as possible, the guests also had to try a Danish version of mead, a beverage traditionally served in the Viking period. The guests loved it, even though it was extremely high on alcohol, 19 percent. Afterwards, the guests were taken outside, where they made their own pewter jewellery, after which everyone posted their creations on the social medias. A TRIP TO THE HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN MUSEUM To emphasize the Danish heritage aspect, the minibus headed for Odense, the

hometown of the great Danish author, Hans Christian Andersen. Most Chinese children are familiar with his works, maybe even more than most Danish children, so the excitement was great when the guests realized where they were going. After enjoying a glass of sparkling wine the guests were taken on a guided tour through the many fairy tales of the Danish author. TRADITIONAL DANISH CHRISTMAS DINNER The last stop on the tour was in the small town of Korinth on Funen where Jim Lyngvild lives. The guests were a little shocked when they found out that the Danish designer lived in the countryside, but when they pulled up in the driveway, it

all made sense. Jim Lyngvild has built a Viking castle in wood, and it is absolutely stunning. The guests were in awe of the magnificent castle, and even more when they were greeted by Jim’s two Great Dane dogs. Many of the guests had never seen dogs that size before, so of course they had to take photos with the huge dogs. After a small tour of the wooden castle, the guests were seated in the hall. Although Christmas was over, Jim Lyngvild insisted on serving a traditional Danish Christmas dinner with roast pork, duck, sausages, red cabbage and heavy gravy, which the guests loved. It was late at night when the bus returned to Copenhagen. Jim Lyngvild and the guests will meet again in April during Shanghai Fashion Week.

VIKINGS IN SHANGHAI: A NEW TAKE ON TRADITION When Shanghai Fashion Week takes place in April, it will feature a Danish cultural strain. At the show Kopenhagen Fur, in cooperation with Danish designer Jim Lyngvild, will show how fur can be used in other styles than the traditional long, brown women’s fur coat. Fur has been an integrated part of the fashion weeks in the four major fashion week cities, and the idea with the show is to focus even more on fur and how it can be used in fashion. Kopenhagen Fur’s involvement in Shanghai Fashion Week is part of our cooperation with Shangtex, a Chinese textile and fashion conglomerate. Shangtex operates cold storage facilities for Kopenhagen Fur in Shanghai and

plays an important role in Shanghai Fashion Week, and therefore it is quite natural for Kopenhagen Fur to stage a fashion show. Kopenhagen Fur has previously arranged two shows in Shanghai; first a show with Astrid Andersen, and in October a show with collaborators from Kopenhagen Nexus, who brings fur onto the fashion scene. The aim of the show is also to show less traditional styles and ones that are less depending on the weather. In April, the show will feature a Viking’s theme. The Vikings used a lot of fur so it is a great opportunity to show what fur can be used for. This is why Kopenhagen Fur hired Jim Lyngvild. He

is there to put his mark on the show, to do the storytelling and be in charge of setting up the show. Jim Lyngvild is very passionate about the Vikings and is also a designer, a photographer and very involved in the fashion industry. His aim of the show is to really give a taste of the different ways in which fur can be used. The show will also tell a good story. The Vikings are an important part of Danish heritage, and even though they were known to be very barbaric, they were also good traders and networkers skill, which are also deeply rooted in the Chinese heritage. Therefore, the Danish Viking story is a great story to tell in China.

REBRANDING OH! BY KOPENHAGEN FUR The accessory brand Oh! by Kopenhagen Fur is trying to rebrand itself which is much needed if you ask CEO Michael Stadi. He knows it will take time, but he is sure that it is the right thing to do. BY NIKOLAJ BABIS NIELSEN

Oh! by Kopenhagen Fur is going through great changes. The fashion company is an international accessory brand designing styles with a baseline in high quality materials and crafting. The different accessories all have elements of fur challenging the normal way of using fur. Oh! by Kopenhagen Fur needed an overhaul after years of focusing too much on PR and marketing activities, instead of trying to find out in which direction they wanted to take the brand. - I think they thought it would be an easy thing to establish an accessory brand, when being backed up by Kopenhagen Fur. Just because you are the world’s largest fur auction house it does not mean that you are automatically the best in the world at making accessories, says Michael Stadi, newly appointed CEO at Oh! by Kopenhagen Fur.

TOOK A STEP BACK Michael Stadi decided to take a step back. He asked some of the essential questions that many forget to ask when you are in the beginning of a start-up. Why are we here? What are we good at? Where are we going? When he got the answers to all the questions, the rebranding could begin. - In the early stage, there were too many products. We wanted to do too much. We spent too many resources on branding and marketing instead of creating commercial products for the consumers. The products were also too expensive, keeping in mind that it was a new brand with no history. Finally, it was decided, that the products should be addressed to women, to create a connection to the women who in the future would like to buy a fur coat. That would be possible with accessories with fur, to kind of create a bridge, says Michael Stadi. IT TAKES TIME TO REBRAND A COMPANY Michael Stadi expects that the whole process of rebranding Oh! by Kopenhagen Fur will take 2-3 years. First, the brand needs to be well-known in Denmark and the other Scandinavian countries, where
