Leonardo Herrmann
Koppert in the Porsche Cup
This year’s Porsche Cup was full of thrills, high-speed overtaking and fights to the last second. In this interview with the driver, Leonardo Herrmann, we find out more about his preparation, learnings and motivations for the laps on the fast circuits. It’s high performance from Koppert on the track too.
BioJournal - To begin with, I’d like you to talk about the 2024 Porsche Cup season, which has just finished. What did it mean to you and what were your main learnings on and off the track?
Leonardo Herrmann: The season was, above all, a turning point for me. It wasn’t just about driving a racing car, but about understanding everything involved in this experience on the track. Each result, whether positive or negative, brought valuable learning. This process taught me to deal differently with frustration, seeing each challenge as an opportunity for growth. I learned to value every detail and to extract lessons from every situation, because it is this mindset that turns obstacles into learning and
prepares us for the next achievements, both on and off the track.
BJ - Between pole positions, podiums and victories this year, what was the most emblematic race for you and why?
LH: Despite winning some victories and pole positions throughout the year, this season has also been marked by overcoming. We faced adversities that challenged us to find solutions and made us stronger. Many weekends that started out difficult ended up turning into moments of joy and great results. I think the most emblematic race was at Interlagos (SP), on a wet track. I started in 9th place and managed to finish 3rd. It was my first experience racing in the rain, and with a very satisfactory performance.
Driver
It was a challenging race, in which I had to adapt quickly to the track conditions and stay focused at all times. You can understand perfectly why our idol Ayrton Senna loved racing in the rain so muchthese conditions test and push drivers to the limit and make every lap a battle for victory.
BJ - The last round of 2024 was held at Interlagos. What was it like to race in a temple of Brazilian and world motorsport?
LH: Taking part in a race at Interlagos during the Formula 1 GP was a unique experience. The atmosphere was full of incredible energy, with more than 100,000 people in the stands, something you can even feel in the atmosphere of the circuit. To win the race in my category and stand on the top step of the podium, on the very same stage as Formula 1, was unforgettable. It’s the kind of moment that every driver dreams of experiencing and that will be forever marked in my career. Interlagos has a special magic and to be part of that story was truly extraordinary.
BJ - This year we also had double races in the Porsche Cup 2024. What was it like working as a team with your racing partner and how is your relationship with the
rest of the staff, which includes various professionals?
LH: It was an incredible experience. I confess that driving alongside an experienced driver like Vitor Baptista proved to be a big difference. The partnership allowed us to constantly learn from each other. The exchange of insights and collaboration were essential to improving our performance. Learning from mistakes together was one of the most valuable aspects of this journey, as it strengthened not only our rapport, but also our confidence on the track.
This also applies to our engineers and mechanics, whose work is essential for a good strategy and a good performance from the car.
BJ - How do you prepare for the races?
LH: Preparation involves several aspects. The physical part is fundamental, as the wear and tear during a race is intense, but we mustn’t forget the psychological part. Mental preparation is just as important as physical preparation, because being in a competition requires a balance between focus, emotional control and resilience.
BJ - What are the main insights you bring from the tracks into your daily life?
LH: On the track, we’re always looking for progress, no matter how small. Every small improvement, when added up, results in a major transformation in performance. This thought of continuous improvement is something I take with me every day.
BJ - What are your next steps in the cockpit?
LH: They’re already being given! We’ll be in contention for the 2025 season, and this time it’s to fight for the championship.
New law for biological products approved in the Brazilian Congress
Approved in early December by the Federal Senate, Bill 658/2021, which is awaiting presidential sanction, creates and regulates the biological products law in Brazil, with specific regulations for the sector. The new legislation aims to promote more sustainable and competitive agricultural practices, seeking to simplify registration and inspection processes, as well as creating incentives for technological innovation in the development of biofertilizers, biological pesticides and bio stimulants.
As well as boosting sustainability, the Bill provides for measures to reduce dependence on imported inputs and stimulate research into solutions adapted to local needs, integrating small
and medium-sized producers into the production chain.
Koppert, through Croplife Brasil, the organization that represents the chemical and biological sector, played a major role in the discussions on the subject, playing a decisive role throughout the process.
“With the enactment of the law, Brazil is preparing to consolidate its position as a global benchmark in agricultural sustainability, with a bioeconomy model that combines high productivity and respect for the environment,” said Ricardo Machado, Regulatory Affairs Manager at Koppert Brazil.
The new law definitively separates biological products from pesticides,
bringing clarity and modernity to the registration of these products and, for the first time, presents clear rules for On Farm production, production by rural producers for their own use, such as simplified registration, good manufacturing practices and the regulation of biological material.
Amália Borsari, Director of Bio inputs at CropLife Brasil, highlighted the commercial potential of bio inputs produced in Brazil as a result of the new regulations, which establish control and safety criteria. “In order to guarantee the efficacy and safety of this agricultural technology, adequate and specific regulations are essential. It allows even more investment to be made in research and development (R&D), making the
country a leading player in the sector, with the potential to become an important export platform for Latin America,” she said.
The main points of the bill include:
• New legal framework: Agricultural biological products, previously regulated by the Agrotoxics and Fertilizers Laws, will now be governed by the new legislation.
• Definition: Biological products derived from plants, animals, or microorganisms, including those produced through biotechnological processes or those that are structurally similar and functionally identical to natural substances.
• Multiple functionality: This will allow a single registration for products with multiple functionalities, such as bio stimulants and pest control.
Registration of Commercial Products
• Competence: MAPA (Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock) will be
responsible for regulating and registering commercial products, with the autonomy to carry out any technical consultations it deems necessary to fully exercise this competence.
• Analysis by Anvisa and Ibama: Mandatory analysis will only be required for new phytosanitary products, and will no longer be necessary for all products in this category.
• Protection of innovation: The law maintains protection for undisclosed studies, promoting a favorable environment for investment by the R&D industry in Brazil.
• Registration of AI for commercialization: It will be possible to register the active ingredient (AI) for commercialization for production for own use (On Farm).
Incentives
Public policies to create financial mechanisms that encourage R&D, improve infrastructure and promote the use and marketing of bio-inputs.
With the enactment of the law, Brazil is preparing to consolidate its position as a global benchmark in agricultural sustainability (...)
• Simplified registration: Based on similar registered products, according to regulations. Ricardo Machado Regulatory Affairs Manager Koppert Brazil

ESG AGRO
Koppert Brasil carries out its first ESG Agro operation with Itaú BBA
Brazilian agribusiness continues to open its doors to building a collaborative agenda with society and the environment. With the boom in the biological control market in recent years, banks and investment funds have been promoting the sector with an eye on increasing the ESG (environment, social and governance) of their operations.
In October, Koppert Brasil issued its first CPR (Rural Product Note) - ESG Agro with Itaú BBA. The value of the operation will be earmarked for investments in the country, with the aim of increasing the company’s share of the local market.
“We believe that corporate success is not only measured in numbers, but by the positive impact we make. Being eligible for Itaú BBA’s ESG products further ratifies our DNA as a multinational that stands out for promoting an agricultural production system that not only increases field productivity, but also preserves the environment and promotes healthy ecosystems worldwide,” says Marília Forchetti Matheus, Koppert’s Finance Manager.
As part of this process, which seeks to combine more sustainable practices with production scales for meat, grains, cereals, among other commodities, the offer of credit, with rates lower than market lines, aims to provide greater corporate liquidity, allowing financial resources to be obtained in advance, and can be issued by rural producers, agricultural cooperatives, retailers and agro-industries that operate in the agribusiness production chain.
One of the main targets of financial institutions has been the biodefense sector, responsible for integrated pest and disease management, which reduces the application of chemical pesticides in the field. As part of the response to this bet, the biological control market grew by 15% in Brazil during the 2023/24 harvest compared to the previous year, totaling R$5 billion. Over the last three years, the sector has seen an average annual growth rate of 21% - a performance four times higher than the global average, according to Croplife Brasil, the association that represents the sector.
Itaú BBA’s strategy to support the transition to low-carbon agriculture is based on offering financial products that encourage the adoption of good production practices. The bank currently has five ESG modalities available for agribusiness: two lines for bio-inputs, one for commercialization and one for use, one for the adoption of cover crops, one for certified production and one for solar energy.
SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2023
Koppert Global releases its first Sustainability Report
Koppert’s first Global Sustainability Report was released in October. With an expanded view of our solutions for modern agriculture and an analysis of the environmental impact of our business practices, the document highlighted the company’s key environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiatives for 2023.
“In 2023, we embarked on a transformative journey that challenged us to look beyond what we do in the field. Our highlights on the sustainability agenda included the regional expansion of our board as part of our decentralization ambitions, the use of
100% renewable energy in our Dutch operations and the measurement of our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on a global scale,” said the company’s CEO, René Koppert.
Last year, the company’s global operations emitted 24,941 tons of GHGs (t C02e) and consumed more than 133,000 GigaWatt-hours (GWh), while more than 480,000 tons of chemicals were no longer used in global agriculture.

RELEASES
Koppert’s commercial portfolio in Brazil gains new players in 2024
2024 was a year full of novelties in Koppert’s product portfolio, which included new features and innovations for the biodefense sector with an eye on Crop Years 23/2024 and 24/2025.
Launched in the second half of this year, Monterey, a semiochemical pheromone to combat the Cartridge Caterpillar (Spodoptera frugiperda), is one of the newest members of our commercial portfolio. The product has exclusive components that cause sexual confusion in pest insects (males), interfering with their ability to locate females of the same species, which reduces the pest’s ability to reproduce and increase its population in crops.
Ranchero, an adjuvant with adhesive and spreading action, is a biodegradable product recommended to promote greater spreading and coverage in the areas where it is applied, helping
to increase the contact surface of the biodefense droplets with the plant leaves, as well as being compatible with all the products in the Koppert portfolio. Ranchero is the first adjuvant on the market developed to enhance the action of biologicals in the field and can be used on all agricultural crops.
“Ranchero was developed to boost the performance of biological products, which are increasingly present in our growers’ applications. Its formulation allows the grower to have a high-performance spreading and sticking effect. Ranchero is the right choice to maximize the return on your investment and a great partner for quality applications,” says Koppert Brazil’s Innovation Manager, Felipe Itihara.
In citrus, there was also news. Commercially launched in October, the Pherodis Ferret, a new device
developed for monitoring the ferret bug (Gymnandrosoma aurantianum), consists of a delta trap, a sticky floor and a sexual pheromone that attracts the pest’s males, making it easier to capture and count the insects. Its application aims to control one of the main pests of citrus growing, responsible for significant losses in the sector.
The novelties presented in 2024 complement the Koppert Integrated System - SIK, which includes solutions for monitoring, inoculants, bioactivators, micro and macrobiologicals, application via drones and a compatibility app.
Next year, more of our brand new products will hit the markets throughout Brazil and South America. Stay tuned to our communication channels to find out more!

KOPPERT
INTEGRATED SYSTEM
With technology and innovations for the field, Koppert offers an integrated system for sugarcane management
Pests and diseases can reduce sugarcane productivity by up to 60%, according to the National Union of the Plant Defense Products Industry (Sindiveg). In the field, pests, diseases and nematodes have been responsible for negative impacts in the sugarcane sector, especially due to the synergistic effect between these factors, which amplifies losses.
In this scenario, the use of biodefense products has emerged as an alternative for dealing with sugarcane’s main pests and diseases - and they can be used in integrated management (IPM), accompanied by other solutions.
In the 2023/2024 harvest, the biological control market in Brazil grew by 15%
compared to the previous year, totaling R$5 billion. The use of biodefensives in sugarcane plantations alone already exceeds 12% of the total area with biological control in the country, according to Croplife Brasil, the organization that represents the crop protection sector.
According to Marcelino Borges de Brito, Agronomic and Market Development Manager at Koppert Brasil, the Koppert Integrated System (SIK) makes crops more resistant to pest and disease attacks, promoting eco-efficiency and sustainability in a profitable and productive way. “The use of biodefensives contributes directly to the management of pest and disease resistance to chemical molecules,
allowing effective protection of the plant, which increases its profitability. Biological products also promote the natural resistance of the environment against attacks by pests and diseases, bringing balance to the ecosystem. This factor will apply agronomic efficacy in the short, medium and long term,” he explains.
Koppert, a global leader in biological control, offers a complete portfolio for sugarcane cultivation, consisting of products for planting, pest and disease control, inoculants, bioactivators, micro and macrobiological biodefensives, as well as monitoring, drone release and compatibility app.
Terranem
Trichodermil
Trichodermil (Trichoderma harzianum 1306) is a high-performance biofungicide and bionematicide that acts as a protective root shield in plant cultivation. The biodefense controls nematodes and soil fungi, which increases productivity - thanks to its longer and more resistant roots - as well as inhibiting the development of phytopathogenic microorganisms, which compete with plants for space and nutritional resources. With a highly technological formulation, it can be used in the planting and ratoon cutting phases.
Terranem stands out for being a revolutionary bioinsecticide formulated with entomopathogenic nematodes (Steinernema carpocapsae) and indicated for controlling the sugarcane weevil (Sphenophorus levis). This is an innovation in Brazilian agriculture, which has always had nematodes as soil pests. Terranem has very high technology in its formulation, providing ideal conditions for the nematodes to act, as well as excellent applicability in the field. Its application via drench consists of spraying directly onto the roots of the plants.
Galloibug
Galloibug (Trichogramma galloi) works preventively to control the sugarcane borer (Diatraea saccharalis). The product eliminates the pest right from its egg stage, which guarantees a rapid reduction in its population, protecting the productivity and quality of the sugarcane plantation. When the product works, the female parasitoid wasps locate the eggs of the sugarcane borer and deposit them inside the eggs of the pest, interrupting the development cycle of the target insect and giving rise to new wasps, which will parasitize new eggs of the pest.
