KOREC is delighted to announce that the Rural Payments Agency (RPA) has just taken delivery of 194 Trimble Juno SC hand-helds with FastMap iCapture software on-board.

As an Executive Agency of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) responsible for making rural payments, carrying out rural inspections, and livestock tracing, the RPA will be using the newly acquired units to equip its team of land inspectors in a move away from using the more traditional land wheel.

The RPA Inspectorate’s Business Development Manager Richard Anderson explains, “The RPA is a forward looking organisation and whilst introducing new technology to Government can be slow, the European Commission is pushing for an increase in digital work methods. We don’t need high accuracy GPS - the 2-5m offered by the Juno SC is more than adequate for our requirements - but we do need a unit that is portable, easy to use, offers a good screen size and is capable of running for a whole day in the field on a single battery charge. The Juno SC meets all these criteria and also has a built in camera which means that we can time and date stamp our photos. Few devices offer this quality of GPS combined with a high end PDA, it’s as if the Juno SC was purpose made for our requirements.”

Software Updates Our Technical Support Team has been busy rounding up the latest software upgrades for Trimble products that you need to know about.

GPS Pathfinder Office V.4.20 GPS Pathfinder Office software, Trimble’s powerful and easy-to-use software package of compelling GNSS post processing tools, now incorporates the new Trimble DeltaPhase differential correction technology.

exeGesIS Surveyor, Katharine Evans, maps a right of way with the Trimble Juno. The exeGesIS survey team has just completed its 40,000th kilometre of path survey – the equivalent of circumnavigating the globe! (www.esdm.co.uk)

Exegesis Partnership KOREC has just signed exeGesIS SDM Ltd, specialists in environmental and spatial data management, as a reseller of Trimble products. They will supply the Trimble Juno and Nomad ranges of GPS hand-helds for use across a range of conservation and country management applications. Trimble Junos and Nomads will also be used by the in-house exeGesIS survey team to undertake public access and other countryside asset surveys.

But what does this mean for the end user?

Well here’s an example; if you own a Trimble GeoXT, this new technology means that you can now postprocess your data to decimetre accuracy whereas previously it would have been half metre at best.

As an added bonus, this software upgrade allows you to get better accuracy from older systems such as the Trimble ProXR/XRS and GeoExplorer 2003 and 2005 series.

Jon Young, exeGesIS Director, explains why they chose Trimble. “We have been undertaking public access and environmental asset surveys for 10 years and have tried virtually all the hardware options available since then. We have now settled on the Trimble Juno and Nomad Series because simply they are the best available hardware for our purposes.”

Ordnance Survey Utility Update Ordnance Survey has recently released two papers which consider how geospatial data and GNSS technologies are impacting on utility organisations.

Real World Positioning for buried services considers the challenge that utility companies and highway authorities face in combining asset data captured using modern technology with legacy data recorded using traditional map-based methods.

At present, utility companies and highway organisations employ a range of survey methodologies to locate and relocate their assets. The majority of these are relative techniques (relative to the OS map background) although many utility companies and their contractors are increasingly employing GNSS technology, particularly on new builds, which provides absolute positional accuracy.

GNSS technology will play an increasingly important role in the future as industry invests in new technology to drive efficiency and comply with new regulatory and industry codes of practice.

Therefore, much like Ordnance Survey, utility companies and highway organisations increasingly need to integrate spatial information of varying accuracy into their legacy data repositories.

The challenge is two-fold:

In paper 2, the ‘Geo-Enabled’ utility considers how digital spatial data, and more particularly, digital asset records, can deliver significant business benefits to utility companies.

The combination of digitised map base and network asset model can deliver a key tool for organisational change. The network infrastructure businesses are targeting specific benefits linked to regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and capital and operational expenditure performance.

This paper sets out to show the how and why of utility geo-enablement through digitisation advances.

Trimble Update Peter Large, General Manager of Trimble’s Mapping and GIS Division, was recently interviewed by the Editor of Geoconnexion UK, Maria Pellegrini, on the subject of Buried Assets and the interesting matrix of technology, obligations and responsibilities involved. The full interview is available online (http://www.geoconnexion.com/geouk_online_article/Talking-withTrimble/361) During the interview Peter identifies two key trends, firstly the push towards ever higher accuracy real-time positioning in the field and secondly, the need to offer the utilities a customised solution that can accommodate their existing workflows. (See National Grid case study in this issue of Sub-dio).

In the excerpt below, Peter outlines the Trimble approach which has been brought into sharp focus with the passing of the Traffic Management Act 2004, an Act which triggered extensive changes for Local Authorities, Utility Companies and Utility Contractors across the UK. Peter Large: One of the significant changes in the Traffic Management Act is reinstatement.

If any organization does work in the highway, they are required by law to provide advanced planning of the works and report any reinstatement work to the relevant Highway Authority.

As part of the reporting process they have to capture the exact location using a 12 figure OS Grid reference, which implies an accuracy of one metre. Similarly, if the work involves a trench, two OS Grid references must be captured, one at either end. This is very new and is now part of UK regulations. The problem is that highway authorities, utilities, and contractors who do this type of work are often not used to using GPS technology for accurate positioning and data capture; therefore, our main focus is to provide GPS hardware and software that really makes it easy to be used by somebody who is not a GPS or GIS specialist. What we deliver is a solution aimed at these types of users - simple, easy to use software that follows their workflows, meets their requirements, and is able to submit the data in the right format and to the required accuracy.

“The Trimble Geo XH 2008 Series hand-held GPS with FastMap Mobile software using Trimble VRS NOW to achieve sub 30cm accuracy in real-time against your OS MasterMap topography layer is my recommendation for the utilities sector.

If your application requires you to achieve 10cm accuracy then simply add a Tornado external antenna (pictured below).

The utilities and local authorities are required to comply with this Act but they often make use of contractors to do the actual work. This means there are a large number of diverse companies who need this technology, but we try to avoid applying the formula ‘here is the software and here is the way to do it’. In fact in the UK the Mapping & GIS division of Trimble has deployed a professional services group to work with these types of customers to deliver exactly what software solution is required in the field.

In a typical engagement, the customer can use 80% of our standard GPS hardware and processing tools, mapping software, and data integration components, but needs to customise the remaining 20% according to particular requirements. Our professional services group delivers the customisation work according to the customer needs, and this approach is working so well in the UK that we are looking at bringing this type of offering to other markets throughout the world.

However, if sub 1m accuracy satisfies your requirements, then the Trimble Geo XT 2008 Series hand-held GPS with FastMap Mobile software will deliver this using the free to air SBAS signals (EGNOS in Europe).”

Utility Case Study 1 Decimetre accuracy Trimble ProXH is ‘last piece in the jigsaw’ for utility contractor Rook Services Based in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, Rook Services Ltd is founded on the belief that good technology, properly deployed, can bring the greatest benefits to its clients.

Established over 25 years ago, the company specializes in utility services, ground excavation and underground mapping undertaking work for a wide range of clients including National Grid and the Gas Alliance. Under the guidance of Craig Murphy, Managing Director, the company is an established user of ground penetrating radar (GPR), an imaging technology used for subsurface earth exploration and ideal for applications, such as locating underground utility plant.

Whilst the benefits of this technology had clear implications for their clients - improved work safety, avoidance of delays, avoidance of damage to plant and equipment – Rook Services felt they could add further value to their services if they combined their GPR expertise with the ability to produce accurate, professional utility plans that the client would trust. Survey Engineer Nick Richards explains, “We would typically find ourselves in a field in the middle of nowhere trying to locate existing utilities from an out of date or inaccurate plan. On top of this, if we were working in a field with animals, we couldn’t use stakes and our paint markings were frequently washed away in the rain.

Utility locations have really only been recorded since the 1960’s so we often had no idea what was down there. We desperately needed a solution that would enable us to reliably record the vital information that our GPR had located along with any relevant attribute information – the answer was GPS.” Rook Services trialled several systems before contacting KOREC and opting for a Trimble GeoXH hand-held solution with FastMap data capture software on board.

They supplemented this system with a subscription to Trimble’s VRS Now service which would provide them with real-time decimetre accuracy. The Trimble GeoXH could be used either independently to record features such as fence lines, kerbs and road lines or in conjunction with one of their GPR to record positional information and depth information. Nick continues, “We can either link the GeoXH directly to one type of GPR to plot our path directly, or more commonly, we can use it in conjunction with a smaller GPR, retracing our steps and recording positions and any relevant attribute information for each point. At the end of the day, this information can be sent to our AutoCad operator in the office who can create a 3D model or utility plan, accurate to 5 or 6 cms, clearly showing any relevant information such as average depth between points. This is exactly what the client wants – a professional looking, reliable plan that clearly shows them whether there is clear access for their proposed pipeline or electricity cable.”

GeoXH because it really stood out during our trials. It provided the decimetre accuracy we required at a good price, couldn’t be easier to use and is rugged and light. We have four guys out surveying across the UK and it’s vital that the information they supply to our AutoCad operator is clear and precise - it’s not as if we can just pop into the office to talk things through. The GeoXH has enabled us to keep our team mobile and the quality of the positional data we’re getting – we are consistently achieving decimetre accuracy means that our operator trusts the information we are sending through. Importantly, it means that we can give our clients exactly what they want, an accurate, professional plan with results they can trust. The GeoXH really is the last piece in the jigsaw for Rook Services when it comes to supplying a quality job.”

despite passing through a random collection of industrial, residential and agricultural areas. “In the space of 500m we must have located at least 60 services crossing the trench which was 1.4m wide by 1.4m deep. Avoiding strikes is paramount for health and safety reasons and can also be extremely costly if local offices and businesses are left without electricity – using GPR and GPS we were able to avoid a single strike on this job.”

Installing 275 kV cable from

Wooster Drive substation to Kirby substation in Liverpool for the Electricity Alliance on behalf of National Grid Rook Services is currently on site in Liverpool installing 10km of electricity cable for the Electricity Alliance. Asked by the client to survey their proposed cable route, Rook Services is responsible for the location and marking out of all existing utilities and ensuring that the trenching gangs do not rip anything out. Contracted to be there for the duration of the project, Nick Richards, Survey Engineer for Rook Services reports that during the excavation of the whole 10km route, there was not a single strike

Utility Case Study 2 National Grid Following the successful completion of a regional pilot project, KOREC was delighted to supply National Grid’s contract partners, AMEC, Balfour Beatty, Morgan Est and Skanska with 25 Trimble R8 RTK GPS rovers with Trimble FastMap Tablet ‘As-Laid’ data collection software. The systems are being used on National Grid’s on-going gas mains replacement programme covering approximately 1858 km of pipeline across the North West, West Midlands, East of England and North London regions. Their sale marks an exciting trend as cm accuracy GPS systems become a viable and cost-effective solution for mapping applications through advances in Trimble’s GPS technology and developments in Trimble FastMap data collection software.

Pilot Project The regional pilot project allowed National Grid and participating partner Balfour Beatty, to ensure that the projected new system would provide a fast, accurate and easy to use method of surveying as-laid and abandoned gas pipelines whilst reducing process cycle times and exactly replicating existing workflow procedures.

The pilot project included a thorough testing of the Trimble VRS Now RTK corrections service. All National Grid’s partners are now achieving consistent cm accurate data in the field by subscribing to this service which provides instant access to real time GPS corrections without the need or additional cost of a base station.

The trial was also used to customise the Trimble FastMap Tablet ‘As-Laid’ data collection software exactly to National Grid’s requirements.

The end result is a solution which allows the digital display of existing pipeline asset data against an OS MasterMap background whilst offering an extensive feature code library replicating National Grid’s existing symbology and workflows. These software enhancements mean that for the first time, National Grid’s partners can verify and issue the completed survey drawing on-site. Engineers can survey new pipe positions and record attributes in a managed customised form and also identify and draw abandoned pipes on a separate overlay. Even ‘duplicate points’ can be accurately recorded along the pipe to ensure integrity of features such as valves and service connections.

National Grid’s, Andrew Hutchinson concludes, “The success of the pilot project clearly showed us that by adopting this style of working we can significantly reduce rework, produce faster, accurate and more consistent as-laid and abandoned drawings and reduce GIS data processing time. Ultimately our collection of highly accurate GPS positions and detailed attribute information could mean a reduction in unnecessary trial-holes and excavations and even herald the introduction of new techniques like ‘key hole surgery’ on the gas network which means shorter job times, minimal damage to the environment and reduced traffic disruption.”

Utility Case Study 3 KKUS John Kitson and Nick Keegan of Kitson Keegan Utility Services (www.kkus.co.uk), an enterprise specializing in As-built plans for the Utility industry, were intent on moving their company forward and recognized that investment in a cm accurate GPS would play a major part in any future growth.

“We know that many Utility companies now use GPS surveys and that the Traffic Management Code of Practice means that higher levels of accuracy will be required in our line of work,” explained John Kitson.

“We heard about Trimble’s UK distributor, KOREC, following their involvement with National Grid Alliance partners through the Pipeline Industries Guild and were aware that they also produced data collection software designed specifically for mapping pipelines.

After seeing a demonstration of the cm John Kitson of KKUS using the Trimble R8 to survey locations and depths of fittings for the 710mm Mid-Cheshire Supply Main accurate Trimble R8 GPS receiver with FastMap AsLaid software on a Tablet PC and just how it easy it was to use, the decision to buy was an easy one.”

KKUS combined their Trimble R8 receiver with a subscription to Trimble’s VRS Now Service providing them with cm accuracy on demand.

The end result is a system that enables the real-time cm accurate digital capture of all the features they require to produce detailed plans of rehabilitated streets. These include newly installed fittings such as stop tap locations, depths, size and material of the newly installed main.

Overall costs are significantly lower, data collection times faster when compared to traditional utility paper based processes and data is of higher quality and consistency.

John Kitson concludes, “We do still get the road wheel and hard copy drawings out if a client requests it, but our new GPS system means that we can now survey a pipeline of 1200m in little more time than it takes to walk it!”

KOREC showcases Trimble’s Mobile Mapping System February 2010 saw KOREC showcasing Trimble’s innovative 3D road mobile mapping system to a range of potential end users, from civil engineering consultants and contractors, to utilities mapping and maintenance companies. Below KOREC investigates where mobile mapping can make the most impact in UK markets. .....Traditional boundaries between land survey, mapping and aerial mapping are blurring but how can those that manage our assets, utilities and roads make this convergence work for them?

In recent years there has been a noticeable trend towards the streamlining of high accuracy data collection. Imaging, largely a tool utilised by the aerial mapping market is increasingly part of land survey and mapping solutions today, mapping data capture accuracies can now be measured in cms rather than metres and it’s not unusual to see the field and the office overlapping as mobile wireless working gains a foothold.

The Trimble system offers automatic feature extraction

With this in mind, Trimble’s GeoSpatial Division has been in the UK with its road mobile mapping 3D system. In a single, modular system, it offers asset, pavement and geospatial data collection using a combination of video, LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), and GNSS to achieve georeferenced image acquisition, extraction and analysis.

Information is collected simply by driving a single pass of the selected route, at up to 60 mph, and collecting the most possible data which is fully synchronized and georeferenced. Back in the office, intelligent data can be automatically extracted whether it is a road sign or a central line marking.

Hardware and software are fully integrated which means no third party software is required for post-processing.

Effectively, the ‘survey’ can now be carried out On show at KOREC’s Huntingdon Operations Centre in the office, as many times as necessary, with no need to return to the site to collect missed data. The same data set can be revisited for numerous applications from lighting column surveys to measuring bridge clearances to pavement condition checks for potholes. The benefits of using a road mobile mapping system are clear, expensive road closures are avoided and health and safety is dramatically increased with the crew of just two safely in the vehicle rather than on the road.

Trimble’s Mobile Mapping System is modular and by bolting on LiDAR , 10mm accuracy is achievable (compared to sub-metre for road side assets), and a whole new range of diverse applications become possible: 3D city models, utility surveys, DTM, road geometry, bridge management, vegetation/landscape inventories, etc. Designed to achieve maximum output, this is the next level in integrated surveying and moves end users beyond the type of mobile mapping technology that offers just paving condition surveys and basic asset management.

It is a convergence of all disciplines into a single pass with a single platform and for this reason capital investment is not limited to one narrow application, a vital consideration in straightened times.

It has been noted that, in some circumstances, running the Data Transfer v1.49 update does not do all that is necessary to download and convert every combination of file transfers available. In the event that the same “database version wrong” error continues to appear after running the Trimble Data Transfer v1.49 installation, it will be necessary to do the following: Browse to http://www.trimble.com/tsc_ts.asp?Nav=Collection63178 then run “Step 1: Trimble Data Transfer” AND “Step 2: Update Office Software”.

If your browser does not support direct installation using the “one-click install” function on Trimble’s webpage, it may be necessary to download the files to your computer first and then run them from there.

Connecting a Juno SC to the internet When connecting a Juno SC to the internet, things are slightly different from the normal settings usually found on other Trimble Windows Mobile devices.

Firstly the dial string. The usual dial string is:- +CGDCONT=1,”IP”,” internet” However for a Juno SC:- AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”internet”<CR> The extras at the start and end are crucial and the process will not work without them, although it does tell you this in the dial string editor on the unit.

Then under Start menu > Settings> Connections > Connections > Add new modem connection Enter a name for the connection Choose ‘Internal Cellular Modem’ (if using a SIM in the device! ) It will then ask for a number to dial. Enter *99# For Vodaphone Users your username is gprs and password is also gprs. Leave the Domain blank and you don’t need to set anything in Advanced.

Select Finish. Then press and hold on the connection you have just created and select connect. The antenna at the top of the screen will change to two arrows. You are now connected to the internet.
