MISSION STATEMENT STATEMENT MISSION
KORYO GROUP - MISSION STATEMENT Engagement + Responsible Tourism Koryo Group (Koryo Tours and Koryo Studio) is a British-run company based in Beijing specialising in DPRK (North Korea) Travel, Cultural Exchange, Art, Film, Publications, and Merchandise. We are very proud of the work we do in Korea and our expertise is based on the monthly visits we have made to the country since 1993. At Koryo Tours, we have always been firm believers in responsible tourism. Alongside organising tours we also facilitate humanitarian and cultural engagement projects which benefit the people of North Korea. In the past we have worked on various different humanitarian appeals from bakeries to braille dictionaries. At Koryo Tours we thrive on exchanging ideas to give the North Korean people the opportunities that interaction brings. Whether you are simply wanting to visit the country, run a sporting event, art show, film screening, or just want to know more then please contact us. We love a challenge and our list of achievements are testament to both our efforts and expertise as well as that of our Korean partner. This list includes; the first western documentaries filmed in the DPRK, opening up new tourist destinations, sports exchanges, the first ever nationwide screening of a Western feature film, the first co-production of a romantic comedy feature film, being the first travel company to take in over 2,000 tourists a year, commissioning the first pieces of Korean art for international exhibitions. These all make up the first small steps to engagement. Koryo Tours is recognised as being the only North Korea travel specialists and provide tourists and North Koreans alike with the greatest opportunity of exchange. NICHOLAS BONNER After training in Countryside Management and Landscape Architecture, Nick lectured at Leeds Metropolitan University, an occupation which took him to Beijing in 1993. His great friend Josh Green had spent a year living in Pyongyang, and a North Korean friend of his suggested they visit Pyongyang with a small group of friends, as there were virtually no tourists visiting the country at the time. After this visit, Koryo Tours was born. Over the last twenty years, through passion and devotion, he has succeeded in building up an innovative company, one which has built bridges between the DPRK and the rest of the world, and which continues to be involved in new and exciting projects in the country.
SIMON COCKERELL Simon manages tourism to the DPRK at Koryo Tours. He is also responsible for ground breaking developments in our DPRK site destinations portfolio, such as opening Hamhumg for tourism in 2011. Since 2002, he has travelled to North Korea more than 120 times, and has become a noted expert on subjects ranging from the intricacies of the Juche idea to North Korean film and sport. He has spoken on North Korean politics and culture all over China and Europe, has published a book on North Korean film art, and has organised numerous sports exchanges between the DPRK and other countries, including ones focussed on ice hockey, cricket and football.
HANNAH BARRACLOUGH Hannah has been heavily involved in all aspects of Koryo Tours’ work since she joined the company in 2006, from tour organisation and tour leading (she has visited the DPRK over 100 times), to sports exchanges and media events. She has been especially involved in Koryo Tours’ cultural projects and sports exchanges, and she counts her organisation of the Middlesbrough Women’s FC visit to Pyongyang in 2010 as one of the highlights of her work with the DPRK. She has been involved in many of the sports tours and organised and led the first ever Cycling Tour in the DPRK in 2011. She has also had some truly ground-breaking personal moments in DPRK. She moved to the US at the end of 2013 and will be continuing her work with Koryo from that new base.

ABOUT TOURISM IN THE DPRK
ABOUT TOURISM IN THE DPRK A trip to the DPRK is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Almost every tourist who has travelled with us has said it has been one of the highlights in their world travels and we can put you in contact with previous visitors if you wish for a testimony – or see our website. Your itinerary will take you on the trip of a lifetime revealing a catalogue of revolutionary monuments, sculptures and spectacular architecture. You will learn about the Korean Juche Idea and how Koreans perceive the world as well as how they spend their day-to-day life.
You can travel from Pyongyang to various locations around the country including a visit to the last of the Cold War frontiers at Panmunjom (DMZ). For many, the highlights include the contact (albeit limited) that we have with the Korean public and at Koryo we do our best to maximise these opportunities based on our experience of over twenty years. Despite popular opinion, travel to the DPRK is extremely safe and we do our best to make sure that each and every one of our tourists is briefed fully before they travel there in order to get the most out of their trip. www.koryotours.com
In over twenty years of experience and many hundreds of tours we have never felt that our groups were in any danger. We have never experienced any thefts or felt in any way threatened. The tour is in relative luxury and whilst this contrasts with the fact that the country still has serious food shortages and infrastructure problems we believe that travel to the DPRK (North Korea) has a positive impact. We have taken advice from experts in Korean politics and international organisations and the majority tell us that the greater exposure North Korea has to the outside world, the better. We cannot take professional or semi professional journalists or photographers into DPRK, though we are very willing to assist them in finding out the current situation in the country. We are in no way prepared to compromise the safety of our Korean guides for journalists/photographers who attempt to pass themselves off as tourists. We cannot allow the writing of articles or publishing of photographs from our trips without prior permission and we would be obliged to take proceedings against anyone who breaks our trust As of January 2010, US passport-holders are permitted to travel to North Korea at any time of the year (before then, it was only possible during Mass Games season). However, US citizens are not allowed to enter or exit the country by train; only by plane. Unfortunately we are unable to take in ROK passport holders but overseas Koreans (including Korean Americans) are welcome to join tours at any time as long as they travel on non-ROK passports. If you are an overseas Korean then please contact us for further information. -8-

GROUP TOURS
GROUP TOURS Joining a group tour is the most popular way to travel to the DPRK both for enjoyment and for keeping the price reasonable. Our tour itineraries provide the best introduction to North Korea and you benefit from travelling with a great mix of nationalities, ages and backgrounds. The majority of people who go with us are independent travellers so it is not your average group tour which ensures a unique experience. Group tours are on set dates that we have scheduled in advance, usually to coincide with a major holiday or event in the DPRK. See our website for forthcoming group tours. In North Korea travelling in a group is often much more fun and relaxing than being on your own for several days with just two Korean guides and your driver, so in this case group tourism makes sense. All of our group tours are accompanied by one of our expert western staff and a typical tour consist of between 8 and 18 tourists, mostly made up of couples, individual travellers and perhaps one or two friends. About a quarter of our tourists are female. During the day the itinerary is often fairly packed so you are kept busy but you get a good lunch break. There is plenty of time to be on your own, if you wish, in the evenings and we also offer a single room supplement (40 EUR extra per night) if you prefer your privacy. A trip to the DPRK is the trip of a lifetime, if you need any help deciding which tour is best for you then please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We are happy to answer all of your questions. How to apply for a group tour? 1) Choose which tour you would like to go on from the list on our website. 2) Fill in the online application form 3) Email us a scan of your passport id-page (2-page spread in colour) 4) Email us a scan of a recent passport style photo (headshot) in colour 5) Pay the 50% tour deposit (via wire transfer to our EUR/USD/RMB account) Discounts: | 3 – 4 people signing up together for a tour (5%) | 5 or more people signing up together (10%) | 8 or more, contact us | | Student discount (10%) | Children under 2 years old (Free Service) | Children aged 2 – 12 (25%) | Returning visitors (10%)

INDEPENDENT TOURS
INDEPENDENT TOURS An independent tour is a great way to travel to the country if you want more flexibility than a group tour. Trips can be as short as 2 nights / 3 days and as long as 16 nights / 17 days. The maximum that we recommend for a first visit is 8 nights as the tours are intensive. We will also make recommendations as to how you can get the most out of your trip - we are the specialists and as we visit the DPRK every month we are in the best position to advise you. Independent tours are generally more expensive than group tours but if there are more than 6 of you it can sometimes work out cheaper. With an independent tour you can: • choose your own travel dates, tour length and methods of entry / exit (flight or train) • travel with a fixed itinerary or fully customise your own trip • choose different levels of hotel accommodation (budget, classic, deluxe) • choose your airline (Air Koryo/Air China) and flight class (economy / business class) English, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Polish, Spanish and Hungarian-speaking guides are available. Discounts: 10% discount to students and repeat clients 25% discount for children aged 2-12 (under 2 free-of-charge) For large groups, please contact us for a quote If you have some slightly bizarre requests, there is no harm in asking! In the past we have run sports tours, school tours, language and culture tours, corporate tours and special interest tours (such as architecture) if you have any suggestions, we would be glad to hear them. Please note that ‘independent’ still means being accompanied by your Korean guides everywhere you travel. How to apply for an independent tour? With an independent tour you can choose your dates of travel, methods of entry and exit and also the itinerary can be tailored to suit your requests. Independent tours do offer more flexibility. Native Home of Kim Jong Suk A simple old fashioned house where the heroic mother lived here for 5 years from 1917 in two of the rooms, which is preserved as an important historical site inside a well-manicured and well maintained park
Wangjaesan Grand Monument Situated about a 90 minute drive from Hoeryong but on the way to the city from the border crossing into the DPRK, this is a huge monument built in the 1970s depicting a young President Kim Il Sung leading local farmers towards revolution. The Monument itself is made up of a central tower topped by a Juche Flame, bronze statues of the President and some farmers advancing forward, and reliefs behind the main statue of workers and farmers advancing along with their leader, a truly impressive construction
NORTH-EAST / RASON
Central Square Bounded by government and commercial buildings the small main square is a great place to start your visit. A bronze statue of Hoeryong native Kim Jong Suk (mother of Kim Jong Il) stands at the head of the square. People come to honour her here (she is known as the ‘Mother of Korea’)
HOERYONG

rason
Rason Free Trade and Economic Zone - The least visited part of the least visited country in the world! Before 2014, Rason could only be visited from Yanji in China or Vladivostok in Russia. It is now possible to get there from Pyongyang via Chongjin. Extension by car from Rason to Chongjin and onto Chilbo is also possible. Please contact us for further information or see our website
RASON
Rason, comprised of the two small cities of Rajin and Sonbong, is located in the extreme North East of the DPRK. Bordering on China and Russia this area was made a Special Economic Zone in 1993 with the aim of attracting foreign investment. In general this has not occurred although the Macau-based Emperor group opened a multi-million dollar hotel and casino which was very popular with Chinese tour groups until the closure of the casino due to Chinese regulations in 2004. The main investments in the area are Chinese trading companies but there are also some western interests such as a pharmaceutical factory and a vehicle hire company. Rason was the first area in North Korea to have a ‘free market’ where local organisations and farms offered their goods to customers, the first to have a mobile phone network, and is generally seen as an area where economic experimentation takes place. We can take tourists to visit the Rason Golden Triangle bank where the difference between the local economic rules and the national regulations can be explained.
FREE TRADE AND ECONOMIC ZONE
Taehung Trading Company The largest company in Rason, trading in seafood and mushroom wine, see industry at work and sample the local produce Sun Portraits Large mosaic portraits of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il erected in 2013 as part of the continuing Rajin beautification campaign.
WHERE TO STAY? There are three main hotels of basically the same standard – Namsan, Rajin, and Chujin Beach Hotel. You can choose which one you wish to stay in and it is even fine to stay one night in one hotel, then move to another the next night etc; just let us know when you book. You can also stay in the Emperor Hotel for big $$$! www.koryotours.com
Sonbong Textile Factory Not the sweatshop that many people expect, this is in fact a large and well laidout factory built with significant Chinese investment and located in the heart of the city of Sonbong. It is possible for tourists to wander around inside the halls filled with sewing machines, cutting machines, and so on, take some pictures, see the boards showing how each work unit is doing. If you happen to be on site around breaktime you can even get involved in a game of basketball or volleyball in the large factory courtyard Rason City Market The only chance tourists have to visit a genuine North Korean market, see what the locals buy and pick up some bargains! Pipha Island Area of stunning scenery, chance to take a boat out into the sea to see seals - 55 -
Rajin Foreign Language School A relatively modern secondary school located in Rajin city which offers the best chance for interaction in English with young people, the standard of the English (and Chinese and Russian) spoken by the students here is excellent and they are usually quite keen to chat with the tourists who visit the school. Rajin Shoe Factory A Korean/American joint venture producing shoes for the domestic market, this place knocks out 180,000 pairs of mainly black shoes annually so look at the feet of the people in this area, you may well be looking at this factory’s produce! The drive here through some of the more basic parts of Rajin is also interesting. Hae’an Park ‘Coastal’ park is recently remodelled and re-opened and where once there was a load of overgrown sculptures, grass and trees there are now manicured lawns, benches, and a large paved walkway up the middle of the park (entrance 5 RMB for tourists) to a roller skating track overlooked by a giant television showing all the news that’s fit to broadcast. Next to the skating area are some bars and barbeque restaurants. You can even try out the roller-skates if you can fit into a pair.

INFORMATION ON TRAVEL TO THE DPRK (NORTH KOREA)
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
PHOTOGRAPHY Photography is possible but it is restricted. Bring as large a memory card as you will need for your trip – or more – as you might take more photos then you expect and it is difficult and expensive to obtain memory cards in the country. Video cameras are allowed but as they arouse more suspicion than regular cameras you need to be extra careful when using them. Cameras with GPS or GPS written on them technically cannot be brought in but lately they have been more relaxed about this and it seems the restriction has been unofficially lifted.
GIFTS You will be assigned two guides (usually one male and one female) and a (male) driver when in the DPRK (we will tell you their names before your tour). It is worth bringing in three relatively good gifts for these people who will be with you throughout your trip. We suggest you give these during the first few days as a small gesture of thanks - this is in addition to the tip that is customary to give at the end of the tour. Also bring in luxuries for yourself - it is an intensive trip - and it is also worth having a good book to take time off!
FREE TIME You are free to walk around the grounds of the hotel but elsewhere you must have your guides with you. On independent tours you can slow down the pace if you wish – just ask the guides. It is worth suggesting to the guides that you wish for a stroll along the river or in Moran Park, as the majority of travelling between sights is by car/bus. They will accompany you but it is a great way to see life as ‘normal’. If you offer to leave your camera on the bus etc the guides are often a lot happier to give you more opportunities for walking.
TIPS FOR GUIDES If you have enjoyed your tour you should show your appreciation by tipping the guides and the driver. We recommend budgeting EUR 5 per day total for group tour tourists and EUR 10-20 for those on independent tours (to be split between the guides and the driver).
CUSTOMS The usual list of prohibited items applies ie; arms, drugs, pornography, etc. Immigration officers will examine your baggage and will frown on books/articles about North Korea and books/magazines from South Korea. Please do not bring in any item that may risk confiscation – we can look after these in our office in Beijing until you return. If you wish to take in Bibles or other religious material please contact us before you depart and we can advise.
BRING A BIT OF HOME TO SHOW THE KOREANS We recommend you bring a selection of photos to let them see a little of how you live. If you have a Polaroid camera the giving of a photograph makes a great gift - or you can post photos to us once you are back home and we will take them in next time we visit.
MOBILE PHONE/COMPUTER From January 2013 it has been possible to take in mobile phones. You can even buy a local sim card to make international calls (no texting) and even get 3G access but these are expensive and the 3G takes several days to set up so not good for short trips. Computers can be taken in but make sure there is nothing DPRK-related on there (films, articles etc). You will not get any wifi access.

ELECTRICITY 220 volts two round pins or two flat pins (different styles used in different hotels!). Bringing an adaptor or even a multi-plug is a good idea as the number of sockets in each room is limited. If you forget then the room maids can often find one to lend you a small gift in this case would be appropriate.

MEDICAL It is sensible to bring a small personal first aid kit – plasters, aspirin etc - as these are not readily available. In case of mild diarrhoea bring Immodium or activated charcoal tablets (more natural method) and oral rehydration salts. Hospitals in the DPRK can provide basic treatment. For more serious cases there is a UN surgery in the diplomatic compound and basic treatment here is possible. If the situation is very serious then your insurance should cover repatriation or a flight to an international hospital. Good international-standard hospitals exist in Beijing and Hong Kong. You must have adequate medical insurance and personal insurance before visiting DPRK. SPENDING MONEY Take EUR, USD or RMB cash into the DPRK. Official exchange rates are around USD 1 to 100 won but foreigners are expected to use foreign – not local – currency. Visa cards and other currencies cannot be used so please make sure you take enough cash to last you the whole trip. For spending money we would suggest that around EUR 250-300 per person is fine (for a week-long trip). Please note that this amount doesn’t take into account the purchase of items such as Mass Games tickets (check for prices) or expensive souvenirs like ceramics, paintings or gold coins! MEALS All meals are provided inclusive on the tour. You will have the opportunity to try local dishes such as naemyong (cold noodles); bulgogi (barbecued beef); kimchi (pickled cabbage). Local beer and, on occasion, ginseng wine or soju rice wine are included with meals. Bottled spring water can be bought throughout the DPRK and should be used – do not drink the tap water. You pay separately for additional beer/water (both are included with meals so please inform us if you do not drink alcohol). There is a limited menu for vegetarians but it is satisfactory – please inform us beforehand.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
CLIMATE Korea has a temperate climate with distinct seasonal changes. Early Spring (April) is sunny but chilly, late spring warms up considerably. Summer (Jun to Aug/Sep) is hot and humid and is the rainy season so do bring a light raincoat/umbrella. Autumn (Oct to mid-Nov) has marked variations between warm and cold but it rarely rains. Winter (Dec to Feb/March) has clear skies, not much snow in Pyongyang but it’s very cold! Best time to visit in terms of weather is Spring and Autumn.
BEFORE YOU TRAVEL Please read the points below and inform us immediately if any affect you: 1. Do you have any medical condition that could cause a problem in the DPRK? 2. Are you allergic to anything or do you take any medication that we should be aware of? 3. Do you have personal travel insurance which covers you for any medical /personal emergency in the DPRK, including evacuation? We cannot take you into North Korea without this, so please inform us and we will arrange cover for you (EUR 35 for max 7 days; EUR 45 for max 12 days). The insurance is from AXA 4. Do you have a double (or multi) entry Chinese visa? If you are not already based in China, you will enter China twice for this tour so please inform us if you have any problem obtaining a double-entry China visa or if 72-hour transit is applicable. 5. If you are a professional or semi-professional journalist or photographer, or you plan to professionally publish photos or accounts of your tour, we cannot take you to the DPRK on a tourist visa – please contact us and we can advise further. 6. Before your tour we will send you detailed preparation notes and behaviour guidelines for the DPRK. We will also give you a briefing (1 hr max) at our office the day before your trip commences.
POST AND TELECOM IDD phone/ fax is available in most hotels, though calls/faxes are monitored. Phone calls are expensive (and even more so from the bedrooms) so check the rates before you call! Where possible, we will provide the relevant hotel phone number before your tour so you can pass it on to loved ones, or once you’re there a quick call can be made from the hotel to give them your room number and they can ring you back. Best emergency contact number to give family/friends is our office number and we can get a message through. Post can also be sent from most hotels to all countries except South Korea (also monitored). www.koryotours.com

PYONGYANG INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL Koryo Tours has worked closely with the festival organisers to expand and improve the range of films shown. The most popular were ‘Mr Bean’ and ‘Bend it like Beckham’ (over 12,000 tickets were sold) and in 2010 the British Embassy together with Koryo Tours made it the first European fiction film broadcast throughout the country. We also take our tourists to the festival and are able to attend the main ceremonies, lectures from Korean film makers and actors, and watch films with a local audience. www.pyongyanginternationalfilmfestival.com
NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA In February of 2008 the historic visit of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra to Pyongyang took place. This was a very significant event for the people of North Korea as they were able to see and hear (the concert was broadcast live throughout the the country on TV and radio). Classical standards alongside more contemporary pieces and also the national anthems of the two countries were performed. Koryo Tours provided the orchestra with a brief on what to expect during their visit and attended the event.
THE HEROES RETURN In 2002, Koryo Tours and VMS productions organized the return to the UK of the North Korean football team who in 1966 created the greatest shock in World Cup by beating the Italian favourites. The event was the most significant cultural exchange between DPRK and Europe. The team has not been seen together since 1966 - in fact for 36 years the rumours had led us to believe we would never find more than one of the 1966 World Cup squad let alone get the eight back to Middleborough, where they were welcomed by 30,000 fans who gave them a standing ovation. ART IN ALL OF US IN THE DPRK In November 2008 we arranged a school visit to Rungwa Primary School in Eastern Pyongyang for ART IN ALL OF US. This non-profit organisation aims to promote peace and foster awareness and tolerance of other cultures between children from all over the world. The students in Pyongyang took photos of each other, drew pictures of their country and wrote poems about the DPRK to try and explain to children from other countries what North Korea is like.
SCHOOL PROJECT TRIPS In 2005 we organized the first school trip to the DPRK for an international school in Hong Kong. Since then, they have visited annually and we have also arranged trips for other schools in the Asia region. The students visit a local school and have the opportunity to interact with the Korean students there – genuinely life-changing for all of those involved and very different from the average school-trip. We are always willing to take in more school groups and educationbased visitors, just get in contact if you want to get involved in such an important project.
“ Dear Simon and Nick, thank you so much for all your work in arranging for our school group to visit North Korea, the first group of foreign students ever to visit DPRK. May I take this opportunity to thank you for the for the wonderful job you both did in preparing our students for their experience, both through this information and the insight you provided, and through the impeccable attention to detail in your organisation. The students have had quite a life-changing experience, and we remain indebted to you for all your efforts on our behalf. Needless to say, we are hoping to take another group of students to North Korea at the same time next year, and I look forward to working with you both once again towards that purpose. “ - Dr. Stephen Codrington (2005)

ICE HOCKEY We arranged for a team of Canadian and Scandinavian expats based in Beijing to take on two DPRK teams in a series of friendly but competitive matches. It was our hardest sports event thus far to organise and was a genuine coup to pull off. GOLF In 2004 and 2005 we organised the first Pyongyang Friendship Golf tournament - odd we know - but in our experience it is from projects like these that all sorts of positive links can develop. The beautiful 18 hole course is open to tourists! CRICKET In 2008 we organized the first ever cricket match in the DPRK. The match was held in Taesongsan Park and members from the Shanghai cricket club trained some local Koreans to play and established the Pyongyang Cricket Club. FOOTBALL Football is the most popular sport for both women and men in DPRK. We have arranged several games between locals and visitors including teams from Irealnd, Hong Kong, Netherlands and Singapore as well as coaching local school teams. In 2010, in conjunction with the British Embassy in Pyongyang, we brought Middlesbrough Ladies FC to play friendly matches in order to mark 10 years of diplomatic relations between the UK and the DPRK. The matches were attended by 6,000 spectators and broadcast nationwide. ULTIMATE FRISBEE TOURNAMENT The first ever Ultimate Frisbee Tournament in the DPRK was arranged by us in Pyongyang in August 2011 - a sport previously unseen in the DPRK. The matches took place in the Taesongsan Park in Pyongyang and there were participants from various nationalities from all over the world playing together with the Koreans and watched by local kids. VOLLEYBALL A Dutch volleyball team in 2008 made their mark on Pyongyang by taking on some local teams (as well as some people in the park) in a series of closely-fought contests. BASKETBALL In 2012 we took in a US basketball team who trained local students and put on a exhibition match. Basketball is the second most popular game in DPRK.
We are always looking for sports teams to take into Korea and can arrange friendly and competitive matches with a variety of local organisations; many sports are played to a decent or high level in North Korea and a tour by a basketball team, a martial arts squad, a ping pong delegation, or even a chess team would be very worthwhile and welcome in the country, very newsworthy for the teams taking part as well. Contact us with any ideas or sports trips; none are too wacky to be considered!

GAME OF THEIR LIVES (2001) In 1966 the North Korean football team created the greatest shock in World Cup history. They arrived as 1000-1 outsiders but performed miracles, knocking out pre tournament favourites Italy. Nothing had been heard from the team since they returned home. In 2001, after four years of negotiations, VMS Productions and Koryo Group was granted unprecedented official access to interview the players about their experiences at the 8th World Cup. The Game of Their Lives is more than a football film. It is a tale of struggle and success, the beauty of sport crossing cultural barriers. A STATE OF MIND (2005) A State of Mind is an observational film following two young gymnasts and their families for over eight months in the lead up to the Mass Games – involving a cast of thousands in a choreographed, socialist realism spectacle – the biggest and most elaborate human performance on earth.
CROSSING THE LINE (2006) In 1962, a U.S. soldier sent to guard the peace in South Korea deserted his unit, walked across the most heavily fortified area on earth and defected to North Korea and disappeared from the face of the known world. Nicholas Bonner of Koryo Group met him in 2004 and together with VMS productions film of the last American defector in North Korea was made. He became a coveted star of the North Korean propaganda machine, and found fame acting in films, typecast as an evil American and is still living in Pyongyang with his family.
CENTRE FORWARD (1978) The country’s first football film originally made in 1978, now rereleased and remastered by Koryo Tours. This 75 minute film is well known in North Korea but has never been released internationally. Fascinating both as an example of North Korean filmmaking and a strong story of overcoming athletic adversity.

This privately owned collection showcases a sample of beatifully made North Korean film posters covering a variety of film genres from epic war films to televised drama and much more
WELCOME TO PYONGYANG
In conjunction with British large format photographer Charlie Crane we produced a study of Pyongyang- stunning portraits of the guides and the architecture of the city with comments from the Korean guides.
DPRK BY DESIGN
Nicholas Bonner has been collecting North Korean common objects since his first visit in 1993. The idea of the book and exhibition is to give these beautifully hand-designed graphics the status they deserve. Nowadays most North Korean graphics use computer generated images and there is more competition in the variety of products produced so the more simple designs are disappearing. This is a record of the simple and the striking graphic image of DPRK’s best designers.

MAGADAN
MAGADAN - One of Russia’s remotest and most isolated regions. A place hundreds of thousands of people were shipped to never to return during the darkest days of Stalin’s Soviet Union, but also a place of stunning natural beauty and an interesting contemporary lifestyle far removed from the European Russia we are more familiar with. Far from the ‘normal’ Russian tourist trail and so far removed from the rest of Russia even today that the locals refer to the rest of the country as the mainland’, this province has no railway line linking it to any other area and the only road that runs in from outside (the Kolyma highway ‘the road of bones’ from Yakutsk, over 2000 km away) is only passable in winter and takes 4 days in good conditions. Magadan City is the capital of the province and contains a hardy 100,000 inhabitants although this number drops each year due to migration to the mainland. Still, the place retains its charm and has a lively social scene as well as some photogenic architecture in the city as well as the forests and beaches nearby. Despite its isolation and remoteness from the Russia more commonly seen there is much to experience in Magadan. Dark tourism is but one element and on this special tour we will see what Magadan has to offer, becoming one of the first tour groups ever to go there, and we hope you can make it there with us! We’ll visit the regional museum, the Mask of Sorrow – an evocative and haunting Gulag memorial, a local beach to see how people enjoy themselves in the good weather, a gold and bone working factory to see how the region’s main product are turned into commodity form, and more besides. We will then journey to see the remains of the horror that Magadan and the entire Kolyma region became known for; the ruins of some of the nearby camps that formed part of the massive continent-spanning Gulag system of the USSR in the early – mid 20th century. A dark and saddening place which is nevertheless important to remember and learn from. We’ll see what is left of the place to which so many people from so many walks of life came but never left. This part is not supposed to be fun but a life-long memory will be formed. Simply put, this is one of the most tragic places on Earth, so remote that the journey is long and arduous but a place of great historical importance nevertheless.
ABANDONED RUSSIA - If this is somehow not enough for you yet we are also offering a tour that no other company has ever even considered running – we call it ABANDONED RUSSIA. This is a trip deep into Magadan province to the abandoned city of Kadykchan. Meaning ‘death valley’ in Russian this was once a fairly populous mining town, with (at the time) modern facilities and buildings, schools, apartment complexes, workplaces and so on. From the establishment of the city in the early 1970’s up until the mid 80’s life was lived as normal in remote parts of Russia but as the economy began the downward spiral that would end in the dissolution of the Soviet Union and exodus of the population began. In 1996 a winter even harsher than normal hit and pipes froze while relief vehicles failed to arrive and the danger of starvation reared its head for the remaining population. Finally evacuated by the Russian military they left behind one of the largest and most well preserved ghost towns in the world. Still all standing, albeit in various states of disrepair, the city bears some similarities to Pripyat in the Ukraine (the abandoned town next to the Chernobyl reactor). A chilling and life-changing experience for any visitor this is somewhere exceptionally difficult to reach but the rewards; in memories, and some of the most remarkable photos you will ever take, make it utterly worthwhile. For aficionados of Dark Tourism there are few places like it. We’ll take you there via a 650km road trip from Magadan to the town of Susuman (the airport there was converted into an orthodox church some time ago) which we will use as a base for exploring Kadykchan. We will explore the city on foot, seeing where people lived, worked, and played; see abandoned apartments, restaurants, and offices. See a place which once bustled with life but is now being reclaimed by nature. In this city you can go inside apartment buildings, the hospitals, schools, technological institutes, the city government, Olympic centre, and much much more. See the bust of Lenin which is now full of holes since being shot at by evacuating local residents, a truly life-changing trip; you’ve never been anywhere like it.

TOFALARIA TOFALARIA lies between 95°37’ and 100°05’ E and 51°53’ and 54° 59’ N and is close to Central Asia. Encompassing an area of nearly 27,000 sq km this beautiful area is mainly inhabited by the Tofa people; one of the smallest ethnic minorities on Earth. The Tofa people were traditionally peaceful in character, trying to avoid any violence and clashes from within their own clan and tribes. This eventually caused them to move further to the depths of Eastern Siberia in an attempt so escape communism and further contact with the outside world. Finally they settled amidst the picturesque northeast slopes of the Eastern Sayan Mountains which isolated them from the rest of the world, contributing to the preservation of their ancient society. They are able to carry on their nomadic existence as hunters and reindeer herders. The Tofa’s ability to live in their mountainous taiga homeland had not prepared them for survival in the modern world. Most Tofa who have left Tofalaria, even those who received special training, recount with horror the time they spent away from the taiga and their traditional way of life. However, in spite of the difficult situation there still remained some of the tough fighting spirit within the Tofa people. Some claim it is due to the blood of their ancient chieftains coursing through their veins and it may also in part be due to the support of the public from outside Tofalaria. People have tried to revive the Tofa ancestral experiences and bring back a sense of national pride. Help has also filtered down from the Soyot.
To help the Tofa people preserve their ancient way of life, traditional culture, and natural existence, Koryo Tours and its local partner, along with the Irkutsk Regional Association of Indigenous People and Siberia Land Congress, have been working on tours and projects to establish eco-parks within Tofalaria. The project aims to create jobs for the Tofa people based on their traditional way of living through the development of sustainable tourism. Using eco- and ethno-tourism we to plan to help reestablish the Northern reindeer population whilst learning about its people and culture. Due to poor management and understanding, the reindeer had all but disappeared, causing many problems not just to the reindeer herders but the ecology and conservation of the local environment.
