As professionals, we offer a full range of services in architecture, interior design, construction administration, facility analysis, site evaluation, planning and programming. As designers, we help our clients communicate their unique message both within their organization and to the outside world. Our reputation for creativity and resourcefulness is based on the combination of hard work and an imaginative open-minded approach to design. We enjoy partnering with clients who want to express their individuality and culture through their environment and are interested in achieving innovative solutions. By taking a proactive role that begins with the design process and does not end until the project is built, our commitment to creating great architecture and design extends beyond the standards of our industry. Since 1987, KGA has completed hundreds of projects for public and private clients including broadcast centers, academic buildings, performing arts centers, offices and preservation of historic structures. However, it is more than just the sum of this experience that matters. What benefits our clients most are the lessons we have learned from each project and our ability to draw from a diverse pool of resources to affect innovation, progress and change. We translate our broad experience into the practical tools that can liberate the full potential of an organization and the individuals within it. A process that starts with imagination and innovation can be as exciting as the final product, and the right project can encourage people to carry their work to a new dimension, both creatively and professionally. Since our environment can play such an important role in our daily lives, KGA works hard to make every space unique and true to the experience of the people who use it. This is the passion and energy that motivates our work. Creativity is the key that links a project’s function to it’s architectural expression. We use a process of collaborative research and exploration, spending time with our clients to understand their culture and develop an appropriate vocabulary for each project even before the preliminary design stage begins. Using these ideas as a starting point, we synthesize the often divergent parameters of each project into an original concept that communicates the unique identity and spirit of each client.
Firm Profile
Design Approach
Philosophy
As architects we believe that each project has its own unique expression which grows out of the program, the client's culture and the context. Our responsibility is to define and shape that expression. We provide vision and leadership throughout the design and construction process ensuring a conceptual articulation does not erode under the pressures of day-to-day operations, value-engineering and drift. As Design Team Leaders, our charge is to build consensus, not compromise, among each of the project stake-holders, creating a shared, passionate vision for each project across all layers of collaboration. To maximize the probability of success, we seek to initiate and sustain an inclusive and holistic approach to design that is equally informed by the end-user experience, the client's goals and parameters, and our collective experience in designing similar facilities. To create buildings that satisfy the brief’s needs and exceed expectations on every level - functionally, technically and aesthetically is our goal. Truly successful designs result from a coordinated approach combining creativity and innovation, informed by history, context, practicality and common sense. A project does not thrive solely on the designer’s talent; rather open communication, shared commitment, accountability and a sustained clear relationship with the client are required.
Approach
Sustainable Design
In over 28 years of practice, we have flourished because we never lose sight of the fact that great architecture is about people. While it is critical that each structure and environment function technically at the highest level, they must also function aesthetically at the height of professional acumen to assure a fun, inspiring and healthy engagement with the user. Time-aftertime these tenets are demonstrated in our work. Kostow Greenwood Architects advocate the implementation of environmentally responsible design that conserves energy and reduces impact on our natural resources. We incorporate current and best practices into all of our projects, offering clients all possible options. The firm Principals and leadership team are LEED accredited professionals who continuously promote education related to sustainable design within our office through a program of seminars and presentations. Several projects completed in the past 5 years have achieved LEED Gold status or greater.
Broadcasting
CNN New York Broadcast Center
Time Warner Inc. 250,000 sq. ft. $75 million
Located at Time Warner Center in Columbus Circle, CNN’s New York Broadcast Center accommodates the local news bureau and the network’s prime time production facilities. As configured, nearly the entire space can serve as a backdrop for on-air production, with careful coordination of colors, finishes, spatial composition and 6,000 miles of cables having created an enormous integrated set in dramatic spaces overlooking Central Park. The Broadcast Center includes large black box and open
studios, newsrooms, production control rooms, support offices and post-production facilities for both live broadcast and original news programming were included. Because our project was so successful in terms of design and management, after completing the original build-out in 2004, KGA has continued to refresh environments within the center as CNN’s programming evolves. We recently renovated 2 floors of broadcast and production areas including new layouts, furnishing and finishes.
Broadcasting
SiriusXM Satellite Radio
SiriusXM Budget N/A 6,000 sq. ft.
The first phase of a multi-year update of SiriusXM’s New York Headquarters and Broadcast Center was completed in 2014. The project scope included a complete redesign of the main lobby and live performance studio. A double story feature wall of backlit acrylic panels with a media wall set the tone for the satellite radio provider. New green rooms for visiting talent, a conference
center and a general office refresh completed the initial phase of the master plan that will expand production facilities for the media giant by the end of 2016.
Historic Preservation
Manhattan Neighborhood Network
Manhattan Neighborhood Network 12,000 sq. ft. $3 million
The EL Barrio Firehouse Community Media Center is located in an historic building designed by Napoleon LeBrun & Sons in the late 1800’s. The landmarked structure was transformed into a public access television station and community center offering training and uncensored access to new technologies free of charge. The 12,000 sq. ft. satellite facility plays an integral role in the revitalization effort of East Harlem and upper
Manhattan. A key component of the new space is a stand-alone Youth Media Center, available for recreation and community events including new media training, broadband access facilities and as performance and production space. Additional programmed spaces include a large studio, smaller express studios, a full control room, editing stations, classrooms, and IT server room.
Development
Cannon Street Station
KG Urban Enterprises 1.0 million sq. ft. $450 million
Kostow Greenwood led a diverse team of professionals in a plan to revitalize the waterfront of the historic New England whaling city, New Bedford, MA. Our plans involve cleaning up a contaminated brownfield and converting an abandoned power plant built in 1916 into a casino, which would serve as the development’s centerpiece. Other buildings and amenities include two resort hotels, retail and dining amenities, a conference
center, and a newly energized waterfront that accommodates both tourists and the thriving fishing industry of New Bedford.
Development
235 Canal Street
Centre Court Holdings 43,000 sq. ft. $10 million
Located at the Crossroads of the Chinatown district, 235 Canal Street utilizes 21-set century technology to increase energy efficiency and maximize aesthetic appeal. Features include an aluminum and high-vision glass wall with a sculpted tapered corner, which punctuates and soothes this visually chaotic context. The Class A office building brought a new caliber of commercial space to
this thriving community.
Master Planning
Bethlehem Steel Mill
LV Sands/Bethworks Now 126 acres $758 million
As executive architect for the Bethworks-Sands project, Kostow Greenwood led a master planning effort aimed at restoring the former Bethlehem Steel site, which brought the 126-acre brownfield back from years of neglect. Formulating the revitalization strategy involved a comprehensive analysis of over 30 existing historic structures, review of surrounding urban decay and study of the site conditions, while directing a large team of consultants through
the 2-year development phase, Our master plan calls for a mixed-use redevelopment comprised of retail, hospitality, and cultural uses, which gives new life to the old steel mill.
