Chapter 1 Everybody has a dream... The most pleasant thought or emotion we can possibly have is depicted by the term ‘dream.’ What could be more inspiring, colorful or dramatic than dreams that have sustained humanity down the ages and provided a foundation for our lives? While we advise children to study and ‘stop dreaming,’ the truth is that no life will be possible without the power of dreams. After all, it is a dream that keeps us going as we climb the ladder of what we term society in the material sense. Every leader, entrepreneur and social reformer has a dream, whether it concerns the individual or the nation at large. If that vision and mission set realistic goals and are philanthropic in nature, blessed by social forces, the dreams are quite likely to succeed. Trump and Hillary are the present day leaders in the American Presidential race. Each of them has a dream for the country and they are trying to sell the dream to sometimes gullible voters. Movies, story books and even songs and music sell dreams on massive scales in the sense that the content is always fictional! Come to think of it, they sell potent visions that amuse audiences that need to be entertained after all the hard labor of the week, whether at home, factory or office. It is truly a powerful function of the dream element! The dream state is shrouded in mystery if we begin to analyze the nature of the phenomenon during sleep and whether or not it is connected with reality. When we take a mystic view of what dreams mean, we are lost. The sleeping dreams are clouded in ambiguity and are supposed to reflect the subconscious mind at work. If you secretly desire a sewing machine, it would probably figure within the dream.
Chapter 2 - Why do dreams fail? While the world is elated by dreams since they represent all the glorious aspirations of humankind, the material and the spiritual, the artistic and the mundane, the truth is that dreams are hard to fulfil. If we have the freedom of speech and expression according to tag constitution, we have the freedom to dream. Yet too many dreams may weaken the spirit and the determination to achieve them. That is one of the reasons dreams fail, excessive fancy dreams that the individual knows are fated to go awry. A child may desire too many toys at once! Similarly, it seems that adult life is also crowded with too many passions, quite unachievable too. Shall we call them fads or fetishes? At the growing age, particularly, if somebody was hooked on music or dresses, bikes or cars for that matter to compare great things with small, the desires to acquire never ends. Finally, if the means are available, too many DVDs and dresses may accumulate and finally you do not know what to do with them! Dreams should be specific, wholesome, realistic and achievable, policies that are applied while studying feasibility of a project like building a bridge for instance. Non-attachment would apply in such cases and the lessons should be taught early in life. Common goals for the benefit of society without selfish concerns would get rid of many of the heartaches and miseries of unrealized dreams. A non-material approach to life with a set of values that respects tradition, dignity of labor and honors elders would not be lost in sensational dreams or be subject to corrupt practices. The possessive instinct should be curtailed in the search for a common happiness like in the joint families that are vanishing nowadays.
Top 5 Reasons Why Our Dreams Remain Dreams Perhaps we need to classify dreams in terms of professional settings, the personal and family life, material and spiritual goals. Thus we gain a better understanding of the variety of dreams that fill our earthly existence. Dreams are thus very common, depending upon the definition you have decided for the term. In a sense, dreams are something that cannot be achieved and that is why they are called dreams, like reaching the moon that seems to have become a reality for some people. 1. The problem is that we are unable to identify priorities in life. We mistake the wood for the trees, and vice versa. Adolescence and youth are difficult times when dreams exist in plenty. Yet the path seems to be crowded with thorns as the dreams of school and college gets translated into the search for a successful career, love and family life. Most youth suffer delusions and cannot get a grip upon reality. Vague dreams of success, money, love and children fill up their lives and they do not know where to begin. Parents and elders could guide them well. 2. Especially at a young age, people do not understand the difference between a job and a calling. Jobs are good enough to deliver daily food on the table, but a calling goes deeper in the consciousness. It is something you are passionate about and willing to die for.
Not understanding the complexity is often the cause for disappointments,
apprehensions and a frustrated beginning to life’s battles. Experimenting with different jobs would help to settle down, but valuable time, energy and resources have been lost in the process.
3. We are often guilty of pursuing mistaken goals. Imagine a student on the threshold of college. Everybody wants them to pursue science because that is the global trend where
the best jobs are found. Not all children can succeed with science. They get pushed into the wrong career path and success will not come. They are condemned to a life of inactivity because they were not made for it. Wrong choices spell doom for many sweet dreams.
4. Besides professional dreams like dealing with hard work situations, even personal and family dreams are subject to the fear factor. Honestly, the trials of life can be quite daunting unless you have the intimate support of the family that includes parents, siblings and some other seniors too. Most youth nowadays at least in developed societies are bent on making their own decisions and not all of them are successful. Fear is constantly eating away at the heart, especially if it’s those lonely decisions that do not have community support. Efforts are weakened by debilitating fear.
5. The truth very often is that people are not motivated enough and the fast food approach applies everywhere. Success does not come so fast and you need to labor endlessly to reach anywhere. Dreams of the get rich quick philosophy happens to others invariably, as reported in the media though affluence is generally increasing. Dropping out half way is the result, as often happens during education too. For some reason, workers decide to quit a fairly good position. What happened? Frustration and anger build up against the system that does not reward with enough or early. The search for an apartment, a car, a wife and children may keep you busy for a couple of decades. How many have the patience and the dynamic drive to fulfil all that society demands.
Chapter 3 - How Our Mind Works We are getting into an unfathomable mystery when we talk of the mind, something we all acknowledge in principle but it remains unseen and unheard. Generally people believe that the brain is the physical aspect of the mind. It is the brain that carries out the understanding of different phenomena like the vision that is communicated from the eyes. The senses, though they work like the hand and tongue, are also processed in the brain that is the seat of understanding. The mind itself is a unique aspect, hovering around us like a spirit or a soul. In any case, the mind is in charge of our daily lives and prompts us whenever we need to make decisions. Which food to eat in the restaurant? Which dress to buy at all? The mind is making the decisions and we equate the mind with us. In other words, we are the mind, the mind is us. Many people prefer the term ‘consciousness’ that is more deeply representative and imply many things in a complex understanding. When we sleep, the mind is not really at rest. The unconscious mind is at work when we witness dreams and we remember them in the morning. Certain themes and ideas are communicated through dreams and waking makes us think that we have conquered new territories of knowledge and reached certain new ideas. With all the accumulated knowledge of the human race, we accept that the mind is a powerful container, somewhat like a computer hard disk. Information may be stored, deleted, processed and memories may be revived. How we work with the mind is really
in our hands, for good or evil, since each of us represents both sides of the cosmic pattern.
a. The Conscious Mind Our waking hours each day are quite dependent upon the conscious mind that is awareness itself, representing reasoning, logic and common sense. We cannot stop wondering at the immense power of the mind that seems to reflect the whole universe. Nothing seems to be too big, no idea too vast, that the mind cannot deal with. If we consider all the achievements of people down the ages, intellectual works of inventors, writers, historians and philosophers have all been possible with the efforts of the mind. As we work and play each day, travel, eat, talk and communicate, enjoy vacations and deliver speeches, work at the computer and drive cars, the conscious mind is at work. In many of these tasks, it would be dangerous if the consciousness of the alert mind was to suffer even for a moment, like during driving or handling complicated machinery. By conscious, we mean something that we are aware of and each little decision is the result of the conscious mind at work. A conscious mind develops early in life and lasts until the grave. The little child has a consciousness with little understanding that grows with education and experience. We understand the conscious mind better by comparison with the unconscious mind that represents the underbelly of the consciousness. Memories of long ago, secret thoughts and feelings, desires and ambitions all remain hidden away in that unconscious mind that we are not directly aware of. The conscious mind is like an all seeing eye that is constantly at work during waking moments like a mirror that reflects truth and awareness.
b. The Subconscious Mind an Introduction The involuntary mind that is important enough to control heartbeat and breathing may be termed the subconscious mind. If the conscious mind resides at the surface, the subconscious mind belongs to deep water, more mysterious than the surface. If the conscious mind is transparent like water, the unconscious is clouded with darkness. Most of us fear the unconscious mind because it may prompt us to do wrong, and many criminal cases are said to have been engendered by that unaware self. Emotions, beliefs and memories reside in that unconscious part of the mind. The unconscious works blindly without logic and reasoning and that could sometimes be a problem. When the subconscious takes over, we might be in trouble. Some psychological problems like the split personality syndrome are said to be caused by the mind. In such a case, two sets of characteristics rule the consciousness and may be expressed in different situations. Since emotions are controlled by the subconscious mind, we may be justified in saying that the subconscious controls our personalities. Sudden urges of fear, anxiety, hatred and anger could lead to difficult situations, and it would be best to exercise restraint under difficult circumstances. Some philosophies make a big issue about mind control practices since the mind is at the root of our existence and everything originates in the mind. Meditation practices play an important role in calming the mind and revealing fresh insights. Compassion,
benevolence, understanding and a deeper awareness are also often the results of dedicated meditation practice.
Chapter 4 - How To Make Your Subconscious Do Your Bidding - There should never be anything negative The subconscious may be compared to the depths of the river while the mind is the surface. What happens on the surface is often dependent upon what lies beneath and so we understand the connection between the two layers. They are not separate but different levels of the same like the different floors of a building. We have often heard it said that positive thinking gets us places but the mind is usually a victim of weaknesses. Many people refuse to think that they can be successful or achieve their goals simply because of fatalistic thinking. That is how the society falls into a rut and there seems to be no recovery from gloomy thoughts. The media is constantly feeding us with negative stories and success stories are few, and even they are lost in controversy. No matter how absurd or impossible it may seem, cultivate positive thoughts. “I can, I must succeed no matter what, I must achieve my goals successfully without evil methods. Such should be your subconscious refrain and let it be repeated. On the eve of examinations, interviews, change of business or transfer, let the same positives become part of our lives.
A. The Science (and Art) of Praying Though we all have our religious affiliations, it is mostly ritual we practice without any semblance of spirituality. Communing with a higher consciousness or universal soul is the purpose of prayer in its truest sense. Forgetting mundane issues for the moment, we should take refuge in something larger than life, imbued with a noble vision and mission for the betterment of humanity. Instead of vain thoughts of past and future, let the thoughts concern the present and how that may be improved for all sentient beings, never forgetting that it is in the present moment that we have our being. At the prayer venue, be it a public gathering of thousands or a very private altar; let the thoughts ascend in a meditative calmness like the silent sea at rest. The mind is calm and under control with visions of the greatness that could be achieved in life. Let an all pervading compassion ride the consciousness as you appeal for benediction from the powers that be. Instead of being bothered by intellectual doubts about the purpose of it all, seek and thou shall receive. The kingdom of heaven is in us, after all. We are then justified in seeking refuge in passages from holy books or isms that we practice even without spiritual affiliations. After all, millions across the world do not subscribe to a particular religious party. If we are able to separate spirituality in religion,
perhaps we have succeeded in discovering the universal soul.
What Composes a Successful Prayer? We are justified to equate prayer with meditation, a trance like state when we are not really into mundane thoughts. Getting rich is a prayer we often render with materialistic thoughts, which is only half the battle. If we could achieve all our dreams without the taint of money, perhaps we would opt for that like the barter system of old. Maintain a little private corner in the home or workplace where the thoughts can be at rest, decorated with images, paintings and sculptures that tally with your thoughts and beliefs. Getting used to the place would regularly enable you to get quickly into that prayer mode. Besides occasional disruptions, keep a regular time for the communion. Like speaking to the mountains or the clouds, powers of nature and Omni-powerful beings that people down the ages have looked up to, let it be a private galaxy where you exchange wishes, thoughts and feelings on a customary basis. Whether the practice would be for a few minutes or longer, sitting or standing, with folded hands and closed eyes are matters that would have to be decided, based on what suits you best. What matters are the thoughts that rise like a crescendo of music above the tumult of the usual daily life, above the din of vehicles and beyond the polluted skies. Ever rising higher and higher, the thoughts embrace sheer space beyond the confines of the earth. For the moment you are quite free of seething humanity and all the burdens that the
human spirit suffers from.
B. Visualization Since our existence is getting more and more visual under the impact of global media while social media seems to be taking over, we will experience no great difficulty to visualize. Screens are everywhere besides mirrors, photographs and videos to let the imagination run wild. Besides portraying ourselves against the scenario of the present day world, think of the life you wish to have, the success you wish to see. If it is a publishing life, you see yourself seated in a plush office along with all the printing paraphernalia and large piles of books and paper. You see yourself meeting writers and reading scripts. If it is a sports career you dream of, the track and field spurs the imagination! You would think of the victory stand, being garlanded by the chief guest and news items appearing about your success online and in print. The collage approach of putting together many still images against an inspiring backdrop is easily done with all the free software available online. Instead of physical images, perhaps you can see it all in your mind, like when you take up a fresh appointment. What will it be like at the new workplace? Moments of panic and terror may arise but will subside in a while as you make the adjustments to the new approach. Gradually the thoughts and images become more and more intense and hopefully will
merge with reality itself. Our daily lives are exposed to a series of images everywhere anyway, like watching it all on a television screen. Thus the visualization copies what really exists everywhere and so the transformation may not be all that absurd.
C. Affirmation Words, images, ideas, thoughts- many paths that lead to the same goal! The value of positive thoughts should get more and more focused as we get about our daily lives and to consciously practice affirmation techniques would bring greater intensity. Breaking away from stereotypes, let us find a quiet moment away from the world usually full of damnation. Like a meditation or a prayer, let the mind come to rest in a peaceful spot perhaps within the confines of the house. A park or field situation would do just fine, depending upon the particular surroundings that may differ from person to person. If people can be themselves amidst maddening noise of traffic and run businesses all day long in such surroundings, it would not be so difficult to bring the mind home. It is important to realize some different facets of the mind that rules over everything. The working mind, the family personality, the cultural, social and political scenarios are all different perspectives that keep changing as we come across particular situations and occasions that require appropriate thoughts. At the moment of intense affirmation, concentrate on all the elements of the present life that may be counted as blessings. Ignoring the past and the future for the moment, let the thoughts concern all that is presently happening. This is not a moment to struggle
with problems or indulge in discussion and debate. It should be a gentle reminder of all that we have been fortunate enough to receive. Allow stray thoughts to come and go as you realize this extraordinary moment to transform your existence. A quiet moment to yourself would work wonders to cleanse the emotions and magnify thoughts and feelings as they arise from deep in the consciousness.
D. The Argumentative Method Arguments are found universally, be it in politics, research, administration, media and business. Arguments help reach valid, logical and meaningful conclusions, whether in the realism of science, art or philosophy. By applying such approaches to our lives, a lot of meanings take shape that had remained hidden before. Yet the process can be grueling as we must have witnessed in parliaments, courts and in difficult family or office situations. So fight it out and struggle on, arguments are really fought on a war footing. The battle of words can be high and mighty and rhetoric, dynamic persuasion often wins the day. Advertising can be deceptive but they often rest on profound reasoning unless they sway feelings and emotions by clever targeting of the customer and seek to exploit vulnerabilities. Virtual, artificial worlds or the trappings of reality, they are all interconnected after all in this present day world. Whatever mysteries are found in existence, work, play, study, money, existence, characters, marriage, relationships- all lie within the realm of argumentation and debate based on premises, evidence, dialogue and understanding. Let us exploit the power of arguments to get at the truth since no easy path will take us there.
Not everybody would be willing to take such a stern approach but disciplined and dedicated people like the national leaders find a lot of crucial meaning in this enterprise. Simple matters often take on a colorful hue through the power of debate and intrinsic labors may be finally rewarded with an apprehension of truth hidden behind several layers of complex meaning. By uncovering the different layers of the onion, you do reach hidden truths.
E. The Mental Movie Method Compared to the real experience of reading a book or watching a movie that is nothing but a series of fleeting images that may be termed a stream of consciousness, our own lives may be thus imagined. What happens in our daily lives could easily be inserted into a film reel that is nowadays so easily done with computer software. Add images or videos, audio backgrounds and titles and a short film is made. Now let us imagine that you are a typist now and wish to become a businessperson. You have arranged for the loan and the license, rented the premises and decided upon a bakery idea. The intense change of lifestyle would come into effect the following year. What will it be like? Start imagining the new premises, employing a couple of workers, the daily commute to and fro, and all the tensions of getting it all going. Perhaps you are quite confident because your uncle ran such a successful bakery but it is the transition we dread. We have not seen the future but mentally rehearsing it may be possible. Starting problems plague every little thing we attempt and taking off may be difficult. After getting used to novel thoughts and situations, new characters and surroundings, imagine it all as if in a movie itself about your life! You are the director of course and the
protagonist taking on a sea of troubles.
You see yourself troubled and anxious,
sometimes afraid but finally triumphing over circumstances against a backdrop of your own natural surroundings, like a family portrait. It is all in the mind though as a precursor of what is yet to come.
F. The Sleeping Technique Everybody accepts the value of a good night’s sleep as being essential to good health. Yet millions suffer the serious evil consequences of insomnia and problems that plague the mind so badly that restful sleep becomes impossible. Dependence upon psychiatrists and sleeping pills or alcohol and drugs may be the result. Besides the materialistic race, the life of big cities is essentially too stressful and many cannot cope. Yet a disciplined approach to the problem and certain dos and don’ts could remedy the problem partially at least. We learned how to sleep when we were little and seem to have forgotten the lessons after growing up when the bigger world took over. Get back to the basics and learn again to sleep like the innocent child. Cares and concerns of a mundane nature should remain at the workplace. Holidays should be observed instead of crowding the waking hours with excessive duties. Learn to say no to excessive office pressures, realizing what would happen otherwise. A psychological mess is not something we wish to be! Unwinding in the evening with light exercise perhaps or yoga and meditation should take care of the physical aspect of life.
Those who work many hours at the computer are particularly vulnerable. Eyestrain and muscle tensions are bound to happen between the screen, the keyboard, the eyes and the fingers. Give ample breaks for walking around and swallowing fresh air outdoors, away from the whirring and the zooming images. Avoid heavy food and minimize alcohol and tobacco, both of which artificially stimulate the body and mind. The natural lifestyle would serve best. With a good night’s sleep under the belt, get set to conquer the world.
G. Appreciation Technique An investigation into rudimentary problems by asking a series of questions is also applied in journalistic thinking. The why, what, where, when and how approach does open up many vistas of knowledge about the issue and leads to a reasonable understanding of the hidden dimensions. The military is an excellent example of such crucial questions concerning a difficult security question building up at the border. The military officers hold a meeting and begin shooting the basic questions. Slowly develops an appreciation or understanding of the concerns. The mind is no longer clouded by doubts. The appreciation approach could extend to a particular area like the arts and sciences, commerce and administration, each with its differing value systems, dogmas and philosophies. Applying such an approach to issues that figure in our own lives could open up new vistas of meaning. Stuck with a problem, instead of raving and ranting, if we only paused for a moment to examine the how and why, ifs and buts, would be a rewarding experience.
Relationship problems, children, professional concerns, the law, ethics and values, religion and home management, no problem is too big for appreciation to solve. Improved life and living with the positive energy radiated by appreciation could very well become the reward by saying goodbye to negative thoughts, hatred and envy, anger and enmity. The radiance of a divine appreciation for nature and humanity, an understanding of basic concerns and a desire for human welfare are characteristic of such a divine approach. Hidden agendas have no meaning as practiced by some of the greatest leaders who ever lived. Make appreciation your life mission and witness the mighty change that ensues in all your dealings with the world.
Chapter 5 - Your Subconscious and Its Power of Physical Healing According to Buddhist philosophy, the mind controls everything and in that case, the mind controls the body too. The physical aspect of our lives cannot be dismissed cursorily and the body should be fed adequate nutrients essential to a healthy survival. A kind of faith healing, the subconscious mind cleansing the body of impurities and restoring health, may not be a dream after all. Conditioning is to blame and we are not ready to accept scientifically that the mind can heal the body. Yet many generations down the ages have believed in the healing power of the mind. If we believe, as some cultures do, that disease is the result of impurities in the body, such a mind healing may be possible. Cleansing is what is being attempted and perhaps hypnosis or meditation may be able to achieve that balance required. Imagine the family situation where any kind of sickness is followed up with a holiday
from school or work, staying in bed, drinking soup and eating bread. Instead of that, if hypnosis and meditation were the norms, perhaps the same healing would take place with medicines, of course, like in the first case. Instead of becoming excessively digital or scientific, the mind must open up and remove emotional or mental blockages, feeling free and soaring up in the sky like the birds forever present.
Developing the mind in terms of awareness, may be through
meditation, enables us to understand the vigorous power of the mind. If you don’t give the mind a chance and are bound by petty things, that mighty mind is hidden away like the sun and the moon behind dark clouds. Enjoy the mind’s radiance and spiritual wonder like as if
witnessing a sunrise or the ebbing sun, spread out against the
overwhelming sky, a power beyond human comprehension. Apply that mind to whatever ails you physically and appeal to the higher consciousness to remove infirmities. Learn lessons from special cases where mind healing has happened. You do need courage and that infinite power of convictions and beliefs to change physical circumstances. Disease and even old age could be supported on the mind scaffolding, as many have shown through inspiring real life stories.
Chapter 6 - Your Subconscious and Its Power of Mental and Emotional Healing At a critical juncture in human history when a large extent of mental troubles plagues
civilization and they are often associated with crime, let us be particularly wary in dealing with them. Psychiatrists alone will not heal the mind problems unless society responds to the need for a wholesome lifestyle and the control of materialistic urges and violence. Emotional problems too seem to be hitting the roof and divorces are often the result of personal problems that have no basis but in the emotions. Irrational fears about problems that do not really exist are characteristic of the present day tension filled world that has assumed absurd proportions. Realizing the truth, the subconscious can often be trained by repetition for instance and that is the purpose of regular prayer chanting! Controlling the mind is as essential as keeping a check on the physical aspects. The body may demand alcohol and sex, but the mind knows the limits. A sound body then is the target in a sound body, to get back to basics. With a powerful subconscious that has everything in place, values, beliefs, principles, values, feelings and emotions associated with certain things, people, places and ideas, we are set to control the world. Instead of being victims of habit, let us seek new pastures and reconfigure our minds like we do with the computer. Train the subconscious and emotions and the body will heal itself under the impact. Body language often accurately reflects the goings on in the mind, learn to open up to the world and take on the universe. a. The Act of Forgiving Are we capable of forgiveness? Forgiveness, as we all know, is a divine quality and mercy is something that we would all like to practice. Violence and bloodshed represent situations when forgiveness was not
possible and mercy was not shown due to enduring conflicts and passions of hatred along communal, religion, caste and color issues. Even in small matters like mistakes committed by children at home and school, the question of pardon does arise and the parent or the teacher is the authority that must forgive. Maybe some are incapable of forgiveness because of deep rooted reasons and the daily media contains no end of gory violence and revenge forms the theme of untold stories and movies. In spite of whatever wrongs have been committed, forgiveness comes in the end and god is large hearted enough to forgive all transgressions. Our spiritual side is akin to divine justice. Penalties may come just like punishment in school. Being able to forgive without any rancor, erasing all the ill feeling that may have occurred is an ability we need to practice. Getting over petty animosities, holding no grudges and saying ‘yes’ without any hatred is divine indeed. Realizing the temporary nature of our existence may help to develop that special feeling towards all sentient beings. Besides, errors are committed due to personal problems that are only human. Crime is not committed on purpose, but when driven to situations with the back to the wall, though some may happen due to greed. b. Removing Fear Probably it is true that all fear is fear of death. Even religion scares us with visions of hell for those who are guilty of wrongdoing. Children have fear put in them from day one. The constitution and the law inspire fear too with all the mighty language and ideals. Subjects like history fill the mind with terror. Even movies for entertainment raise disturbing issues. Amidst universal fear, the little individual struggles along the
highway called life. A slight injury during games, the news media, and travel of any kind, working with machinery, even roller coaster rides, boating and climbing a tree – each small everyday action is loaded with fear as long as the process happens. Some of it is inevitable and perhaps we are all hardened against those little fears. Yet we cannot take everything for granted because things go wrong sometimes. Yet something terrible like the missing Malaysian Airlines plane rarely happens. In daily life and routine actions, we do need a bit of courage and positive thinking to get over irrational fears. Regular prayers keep reminding us of that higher power in our midst that seems to have a connection with things going wrong, if everything that happens is part of destiny. Seniors, preachers, parents and teachers may help rid ourselves of the fear psychosis. Meditation and hypnosis would help to get rid of deep seated fears. Phobias are particular fears like fear of insects. In the well-arranged daily lifestyle habits of work, study and play, little fear exists when everything is in place. What happens if the bus does not show up or an accident occurs? Everything is suddenly thrown out of gear and fear or terror may temporarily grip the mind until things are normal again. We should be able to triumph over circumstances and hold the head high. As law abiding citizens with patriotic values and socially positive belief systems, there is little to fear or worry about. Each of us may need a policeman, a lawyer and a doctor to ensure a decent survival. Let us labor on. C. Freeing Your Mind Though born into freedom, we sometimes find ourselves shackled in chains. That may
be metaphorically true since we live surrounded by all kinds of restrictions. Each organization has a set of rules, code of conduct and even a recommended dress. Similarly, the mind seems to have become enslaved through sheer habit. If the mind is not given a chance, it would be like rusted machinery that has never been used. Just like physical exercise, we need some such vigorous action for the mind. Meditation is scientifically proven to have a positive impact upon the mind functions. If we allow the mind to grow and flower just like the physical body, our lives would be filled with a radiant halo just like freedom must have felt to the enslaved colonies. The mind is like water that seeks to find its own level. But then the water requires a container for that purpose and the ocean is one vast container, akin to the mind. Avoid constraints and barriers imposed on the mind. Avoiding prejudices, blind hatreds and hostility, petty jealousies and envy are part of freeing up the mind. If the mind resembles a well maintained rose or orchid garden of radiant hues, that is what the ideal mind should look like, a place for peace and happiness to dwell. Cultivate a mind that has the expanse of the sky and considers all of humanity to be a glorious family, where no walls exist. Perhaps the nature channels on televisions may help achieve such thinking. If exposed to nature in the raw at first hand like in village life, we would be closer to the cosmic consciousness of which we are a profound part.
Chapter 7 - Subconsciously Think Your Way to Wealth and Success The problem is simple enough and that is to avoid negative thoughts. A cheerful and dynamic personality is one that thinks positively. Instead of harping on things we do not have, realizing the value of what we do possess is crucial to ensuring happiness in existence. We cannot judge a fish by its ability to climb trees. Each of us is unique and cannot bear comparisons. We would have people higher on the social scale and below too. Once we have the priorities chalked out like duties towards kith and kin, spouse and children, a budget could be drawn up regarding bare monthly living expenses. Saving for the future assumes great importance too to subsist on rainy days if it is not a regular service with a paycheck at the end of the month. When values and beliefs are organized and the reason for existence and work are clear,
sound relationships provide a sound foundation for family life, and the subconscious takes over and turns the wheels of life to move confidently along. The train on the tracks is an appropriate metaphor. When the lessons are drilled into the subconscious mind, it becomes a kind of driver and there is no possibility of things going off course. More important than the conscious mind is what lies underneath unlike what appears to be the truth. The subconscious is the master and the conscious mind a slave. Programming of the mind needs to be achieved, based on sound values and beliefs, and not on materialistic desires of course. Wealth must have a reason and not for luxury alone. Success should extend to social and patriotic concerns with compassion and humanitarian values. Subconscious programming would succeed in grounding firmly on envisioning goals being fed into the system just like we do with computer memories. Just like our own body images surface each day in the mirror without fail, the subconscious would keep prompting from somewhere in the depths. Things will keep moving fine until perhaps a new posting or job will require some finer adjustments to be made though some things eternally remain the same.
Chapter 8 - Using Your Subconscious to Have a Happy Relationship
Relationships? Yes, they bring us infinite joys like the teacher-student or the parentchild bonds that may last a lifetime and beyond. Yet we know that relationships are often the cause of rifts and sometimes irrevocably so. Yet we are far from losing faith in relationships, especially the ones built on bonds of blood. Open relationships are flaunted nowadays in these ultra-modern times when we have thrown caution to the winds. Traditional ties of secrecy like the women behind the veil in Muslim cultures are slowly on the way out in much of the world. Yet care is needed and we must practice the systems and customs that prevail in particular geographical regions, both in terms of dress and behavior. Faith and trust form the basis of relationships besides common interests that could extend to professions or merely hobbies. Liking something mutually that could be a newspaper, a television channel or a pet could bring people very close together. Intimacies are a different relationship, though, and would extend more to married couples and their little games that are needed to cement the relationship. Little gifts exchanged during special occasions like anniversaries go a long way in this regard to keep feelings and emotions alive and kicking. But then the need for confidentiality and secrecy builds walls around the couple and concerns nobody else. Yet the happy couple could spread a thousand smiles in parties and functions like celebrity couples across the media. If the subconscious believes in such trusting and caring relationships, not only with the spouse alone, but with society, a tumultuous joy would be experienced each time like a sweet breeze. We have all met some such social butterflies that waft and strut their way around communal occasions, attracting many envious glances and a little admiration too. We need characters like them after all.
a. Being Happy with the People Around You Tuning into each other in the group would work towards mutually beneficial relationships while we often hear it said that some people do not vibe or do not agree in terms of vibrations or feelings that emanate from each other. How can we then effect those harmonious relationships with the society around us? Who are the people around us anyway? Colleagues or maybe family comes first, social friends, acquaintances, the shop guys, travel mates and classmates – they are some whom we should classify as immediate beneficiaries of the largesse of our characters. Comparing people around us, we have the introverts and the guys open to the world. The secret of a warm and loving personality that wins friends and influences people would be those whose minds are programmed positively towards social and human values, who see the silver lining every time, who have the resilience of spirit and may be termed input down able, having the courage of convictions. Some clichÊs are necessary because society did not develop overnight but has a long history, in any case, let us think of the last two hundred years and that includes the Victorian times of great decency in manners and dress when people realized some important social lessons. Being good at heart besides that programmed subconscious, being genuinely fond of people is at the crux of the question. Like teachers who need to like Student Company in order to teach successfully, we must be dedicated to people and their welfare. If social matters become our concerns, and we are willing to lend a helping hand and a shoulder to cry upon, we would win many admirers, not for any selfish reason but out of respect for human dignity, feelings and emotions.
Working for charity and social causes may not be the agenda, but a social responsibility would certainly go a long way. Putting a smile on the face is perhaps as important as putting money in the pocket. b. How to Get the Ideal One We expect much from the ideal spouse or anything ideal for that matter like an ideal home. The idea of perfection does not seem to be really attainable but that is how we start all the same. Perhaps even if a fraction of the perfection is achieved, we should be more than happy. Shops that allow bargaining start with a sky high price, and then the haggling commences. The final sale may take place at a price far lower than originally quoted. A prospective spouse being good looking would be the first priority, attractive, fashionable, and up to date, smart, alert, dedicated to social values perhaps. Common interests or professions make many happy couples who have found something to drive the relationship. Initial passions would weaken after some years but mutual interests keep the show going, most often children and their phases of growing up, education and career. If the parents are well settled professionally, there is little to worry about where children are concerned. In spite of the all too common divorce cases, marriage does begin positively with hopes of conjugal bliss for all eternity. How best to minimize the chances of a breakup? Would you expect a total fidelity forever? Interest wanes after a while in marriage and the French are traditionally infamous for seeking pleasure in another flirty companion. What are your expectations and set of values? Would it not be reasonable to expect the same of your life partner? In the days of website affairs and coming together, approaches need to change. The
possessive instinct is no longer dominating like in the past. We should be more open, caring and trusting with relationships. Just like we share a lot of crucial natural resources like air, water and sunshine, maybe we should share our friendships and relationships for mutual happiness.
c. Mending a Falling Marriage Boredom does set in after some years professionally and in marriage too that appears in some sense like another occupation with its values and traditions. Just like the child needs toy after toy to sustain interests, adults too need to have sustained interests. Novelty brings fresh muscle to a relationship and keeps the flag flying high. A vacation is some sort of novelty in a new destination of an exotic island or mountain top, and suddenly the whole family is energized sky high! One person has to take the initiative, perhaps the senior or higher educated or professionally superior spouse. Very often the causes that weaken a marriage are easy to identify. Perhaps it is substance abuse, violence, gambling, an illicit affair, or even money or jobs, property or will. If both sides want to end the marriage, so be it but the counselors and the courts do try to avoid the ultimate blow in the interests of society. In societies that suffer high stress levels and where violence and guns are the norms, cool headed thinking is certainly called for, especially if children are involved. It would be wise to talk it over discreetly, maybe in the presence of an elderly mutual friend or close neighbor. If you sense that the conjugal comradeship is waning as the ardor often does, begin playing the lead role and be prepared to run the extra mile. Life is made up of people and relationships besides experiences. A new job, hobby, outing or club jumpstarts life
all over again, dramatically so. Nature based activities like camping and trekking, wildlife and cruises could introduce wonders unimaginable earlier. The inspirational value of nature is tremendous and should be lived, rather than experienced on television screens. Dedication and the intrinsic strength of relationships would finally triumph over those little messy, irritating issues that crop up all the time and appear to wreck relationships, but actually don’t, if curtailed in time.
Chapter 9 - Subconscious Happiness to Reality Reality is a complex term not really easily understood, one sense representing what exists behind the world of appearances. In daily life, we are accustomed to various experiences that may be termed reality as opposed to the world of dreams or the unreal as witnessed on cinema screens. The truth is that the mind constructs the reality for us by means of various inputs like sound, sight, taste, touch and smell. The eye sees the image of the tree but the brain or mind processes what the image means. Since we live in symbolic terms, the tree carries a world of meaning like representing healthy living, avoiding pollution and maintaining the invaluable tree cover. Ideas and thoughts are initially born in the subconscious mind with a deeper layer called the unconscious. We become aware of them when they reach the surface layer of the conscious mind. In other words, we dwell deep down there like the sea creatures deep down under.
The subconscious mind cues our existence, recognizes relationships, processes bits of information and is a mighty wonder. In terms of processing, each second undergoes vast calculations, perhaps comparable to computer performances though the digital world can achieve more in terms of mathematical calculations. If we have observed all the mind control lessons through methods like meditation and hypnosis and created an aura of peace and understanding, deep within the mental faculties, we are prepared to take on the challenge of reality. Spiritual people are perfect examples of being at peace with the surrounding. Like a beacon on a lighthouse broadcasting to the dark seas, their mind radiates peace and understanding, illuminating the darkness around.
Chapter 10 - You Can Never Be Old with a Healthy Subconscious Since faith matters so much, a single meditation technique would work wonders, provided it is regularly done with devotion. Scientific research proves that meditation works wonders on the brain and revives and rejuvenates thought. Since ideas and thoughts originate in the brain, more clout is born and knowledge formed through such an activity. Shall we call it the mind muscle? Just like physical muscles must age and grow weaker, the mind would normally go through an aging process too. A positive subconscious mind, filled with cosmic energy through radiant thoughts and a set of noble values and traditions, is programmed to last a lifetime. Keep the mind simple like in all matters concerning mundane life and avoid clutter. Just like we delete unnecessary files
periodically from the computer and send it to the dustbin, unknowing should be a mental process. In an age of excessive information that attacks from every direction on a 24/7 basis, the mind is filled with more than it can cope up with. Meditation will free the mind from distractions, allowing you to concentrate upon essentials. Like a tree needs to be trimmed of aging branches for healthy growth, keep pruning the branches of the mind and let it get wholesome again. While you pamper the body in a hundred ways, don’t forget the sovereign mind. Medications are also available to boost memory for instance. The best medication is nature when we are suffocated by excessive technology that enslaves the mind in a million ways.
