24th July 2010 PROJECT REPORT A Project to build toilets for soldiers in Oddusuddan, Mullaitivu District. Rotary Club of Capital City has been involved with several projects to assist the people who have been resettled in their villages after the War ended. We recently concluded several joint projects with FOMSO in Oddusuddan, in this regard. As much as we assist our Sri Lankans brothers and sisters in the North and East for them to resettle, we also need to assist to make the working conditions of our soldiers better. We were informed that a project was initiated by the Sri Lanka Army 64 Division in Oddusuddan, to build approximately 300 toilets for the soldiers use in the Rest & Recreation (R&R) places, as well as for the soldiers who are on duty in Oddusuddan. Since there are now about 10,000 people resettled in Oddusuddan, the soldier who is on picket duty, must have access to a toilet. This basic facility is presently not available and therefore, Our Club has agreed to assist the Army in their efforts to build toilets. The Army requested, and we have agreed to provide 80 squatting pans, i.e., 30 squatting pans (square type) to the R&R and 50 medium size squatting pans, for the toilets to be used by the soldiers on duty. The prices that we have obtained from Armour Street is Rs. 1525/- for square type (Indian make) and Rs. 700/- squatting pan (Local make). The Army agreed to make arrangements to transport the items from Colombo to Oddusuddan. We purchased 3 commodes with cisterns also for the use of the Army, and the Army was appreciative of this further donation as well. Generous donors from Australia, Mr and Mrs. Sanjiva Weerasooriya have agreed to send a donation of A$ 500/- (Rs. 50,000/-) to be utilized with regard to this project. Also Mr. and Mrs. Basnayaka and Mrs. Fernando provided generous donations of Rs. 20,000/- and Rs. 700/respectively. A further donation of Rs. 10,000/- was received from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous. Hence the total funds collected was Rs. 80,700/-. The balance funds necessary for the purchase of items were contributed by the undersigned. On 22nd July 2010, the 80 squatting pans and 3 commodes were purchased, and transported by Army lorry to Oddusuddan.
