place in which the Shechinah dwells is at Kever Rochel. There rather than any other place!

A minyan of Kupat Ha'ir messengers at Kever Rochel

At Mam mme Roch hel's s Every year anew, as the anniversary of Rochel Imeinu's passing approaches, people's hearts open, soften. Perhaps more than any other place on earth, Rochel Imeinu's tombstone inspires tears of emotion in every Jew, no matter his situation in life. Rochel is always there, her arms open wide to receive her children, to hear their cries and comfort them. Mamme Rochel is always there to act as a melitzas yosher on their behalf. "In our times, the Shechinah dwells mainly at Kever Rochel," the Gr"a writes in his commentary on the holy Zohar. In our times, the Shechinah dwells mainly at Kever Rochel! It is there that one has a clear pathway to the Gates of Heaven. There, the Kisei Hakavod is very close! There, one can find a very short path directly to the Ribono shel Olam! We have no understanding of mystical concepts. We don't know exactly what the Vilna Gaon's words mean. We know only what we we've been told: Today, the main

And if that is the main place where the Shechinah dwells nowadays, that is where anyone desiring to draw close to Hashem, to sanctify and purify himself, to pour his heart out to his Father in heaven – will go. That is where anyone seeking to cleave to the Shechinah, anyone who longs to have his prayer reach the Kisei Hakavod – will visit. As you already know, Kupat Ha'ir makes sure to arrange tefillos in various holy sites in order to help all those who do not have the ability to go there themselves. No one really understands someone's suffering to the same degree as a fellow sufferer. No one understands the suffering of the needy families dependent upon Kupat Ha'ir more than people who need a yeshuah, albeit of a different nature, in their own right. The marvelous connection between this understanding, which sets many a contribution in motion, and the tefillos and yeshuos that follow as a result, is the fuel that feeds Kupat Ha'ir's "special tefillah" campaign: people in need of a yeshuah contribute from their money to their fellow Jews suffering frightful poverty, and the merit of this contribution serves as the key to their own salvation. After years of experience in the field, Kupat Ha'ir has learned how to find people who daven for others as if those "others" were their own children or brothers. The depth of emotion they show during these tefilos, the self-sacrifice with which they make sure to never be late, never miss a tefillah, show up no matter what – all these ensure that their tefillos on behalf of contributors are alive, fervent, from the heart – and effective.

"Nowadays, the Shechinah's main resting place is at Kever Roche (Th he Vilna a Ga aon's s co omme entary on Tikku u

Messengers sent by Kupat Ha'ir will read aloud the names of contributors 516 times at the tziyun of Rochel Imeinu. Five hundred sixteen times, the numerical equivalent of the word Va'eschanan – the same number of times Moshe Rabeinu, davened to Hashem. Five hundred sixteen times --- these tefillos plus one more time. make it through even the most tightly locked gates. Over and over again, they come knocking, refusing to give up. They crumble barriers and rend difficult decrees. Five hundred sixteen times! Va'eschanan… Va'eschanan at Kever Rochel, the Shechina's main resting place in today's times. Va'eschanan over there, with the Shechinah oh-so-close by, where the gates of heaven are open wide. Va'eschanan over there, at the holiest and most auspicious sites. Va'eschanan! Along with the tens of thousands of tefillos from all over the world, along with an infinite amount of tears wept at the tomb of Mamme Rochel, the names of contributors to Kupat Ha'ir, too, will ascend to the heavens along with their personal requests and plead before Hashem five hundred sixteen times. Over and over again, the names and requests will be repeated, amidst the fervent recitation of Tehillim, amidst intent prayer, with emotion and fire and intense pleading. Ten times, twenty, fifty, one hundred, another hundred, another hundred… five hundred sixteen times!

the zechus of contributing to the most mehudar, most respectable and worthiest tzedakah fund in existence. He merited it because he fulfilled the will of Hashem in a most mehudar fashion, as outlined in His Torah. He merited it because he fulfilled the will of the Gedolei Hador that the mitzvah of tzedakah be carried out in precisely this manner, through Kupat Ha'ir, which they trust implicitly. The mitzvah of tzedakah with its awesome power and the many, many zechuyos it brings with it, with the special nachas ruach it brings Hashem – sends all these tefillos soaring high, higher than all the accusing angels.

Meriitin ng Beiing Th herre Practically everyone would prefer that he can personally be at the grave of Mamme Rochel, the main resting place of the Shechinah in our times, on the day of her yahrtzeit – 11 Cheshvan – and on the 39 days thereafter. Everyone would prefer to personally daven and pour his heart out, to plead with Mamme Rochel to intercede on his behalf. But very few people, if any, have that ability.

The astounding 40-consecutive-day tefillah session will begin, with Hashem's help, at Kever Rochel on 11 Cheshvan. It was on this day that our forefather Yaakov buried Mamme Rochel specifically in this spot so that she would pray on her descendants' behalf and it's on this day – precisely on this day – that Kupat Ha'ir's unique prayer session will begin at her gravesite. The merit of tefillah with a minyan. The merit of having your name recited 516 times by talmidei chachamim – no one can merit that on his own. Contributors to Kupat Ha'ir are the only ones who will merit having their names prayed for at this holy site, the Shechinah's main resting place in our times, by a minyan of talmidei chachamim 516 times.

Pale in Com mpa aris son to Rea ality y Last year was the first time Kupat Ha'ir arranged a unique 40-consecutive-day-at-Kever-Rochel prayer session. Maran Harav Yaakov Edelstein, shlit"a, issued instructions on how the tefillos should be conducted and a minyan of talmidei chachamim set out every day for forty days to cry and plead with Hashem at the tomb of Mamme Rochel, a"h. The lists of contributors had been prepared in advance and each member of the minyan was fully aware of his job and the awesome responsibility it carried. Every last detail was seen to. But the event we had pictured in our mind's eye paled in comparison to the real thing. The amazing tefillah at Kever Rochel on the first day was astonishing in its power. Emotion was at an all-time high as everyone present struggled to digest the sanctity of both the location and the time. The prayers burst forth with great force, emanating from a place so deep inside the members of the minyan never knew they existed. The fourth and fifth sefarim of Tehillim were recited

in unison according to the instructions ions of Maran Harav Yaakov Edelstein, shlit"a, and the familiar words took on new, deeper significance. The Yehi Ratzon at the beginning and at the end, the prakim recited aloud in the time-honored melody used at prayer sessions – all these served as a powerful framework for the recitation of the names of contributors along with their personal requests. Everyone present participated in a ta'anis dibbur and along the way shiurim were held for the purpose of both utilizing time in a positive manner and preserving the atmosphere of spiritual elevation. All these factors together created an indescribably lofty spiritual experience.

Undiiminish hed d Em mottion n "Okay, that's how it is on the first day," everyone thought to himself. Who could have dreamed that a scene that would repeat itself more than 39 times (actually, Kupat Ha'ir ended up adding 10 days in order to provide 40 days to those contributors who started late) would retain the same level of emotion throughout the entire period?

"Hashem will certainly heal one who disperses his mon to the poor [in order] that they recite Tehillim on hi (The e Avo odas s Yis srael of Kozhniitz, on the ha aftara

It was lema'alah min hateva. The members of the minyan sensed clearly that their prayers at this holy site were meriting special siyatta dishmaya and he'aras panim. Their emotion remained intact and even increased throughout the following days. The list of anonymous names grew dear to their hearts. After davening for the same names day after day for forty days, you can't help but forge a connection with them. What had become of them? Perhaps they had already merited a yeshuah? Every name was like that of a loved one, and the tefillos became ever more fervent. Throughout the fifty days, thousands of people visited Kever Rochel and met up with Kupat Ha'ir's unique minyan. The regards received by Kupat ha'ir were very heartwarming. "We saw your minyan… You ought to video them once and show the video to the public so that people will know what tefillah really means. No one dreams that reading a list of names at Kever Rochel means tefillas Neilah with intense concentration and intense crying!" "We were so moved… We went to Kever Rochel and we saw the minyan davening. Our names were on the list, too, and we wanted to see how we were being davened for. We were moved to tears." "Where did you find these people? You could see on their faces how much they cared. They weren't just rattling names off a list; they were davening from the bottom of their hearts, as if they were personally acquainted with the people asking for a yeshuah." "With my own ears I heard a member of the minyan plead with Hashem to help a particularr contributor. He repeated ated the name over and overr again. I f I hadn't known wn that he was davening forr a name on the list – I peeked over his shoulder – I'd have been n sure that he was davening for a person he knew w personally."

money on his behalf."

Hash hgacha ah Prattis On Hea aven n and Earrth An interesting anecdote occurred at the beginning of Operation Cast Lead, toward the end of the forty days of prayer at Kever Rochel. All at once, the situation turned quite dangerous and it was unsure whether we'd be able to continue visiting Kever Rochel every day. Tension mounted at Kupat Ha'ir. People had paid good money and we'd promised them forty days – what would be now? No one could have foreseen such a situation, but that didn't mean we could renege on our promise. That same day, the man in charge of the minyan received a phone call. On the line was the military official in charge of Kever Rochel. "How many days do you have left? I suddenly realized that you must be in the middle of your forty days. Don't worry; I'll be there every day to allow you to pray. You be there at the time we make up; don't be late. Even when Kever Rochel will be closed to other visitors, we'll make an exception for you." we at Kupat Ha'ir considered this an open miracle. And so it was. The military official was so impressed by the earnestness of Kupat Ha'ir's minyan that he personally came to the site every day to allow the minyan in to daven. Not a single day was skipped.

A Sh hiurr Wh hile Tra avelling g On the van en route to the kever Rochel, a shiur is delivered on Maseches Sotah. Two pages a day – one en route, one on the way back - were studied every day of the forty days, plus another few days tacked on to benefit latecomers. On the final day, when the minyan prepared to take leave of Mamme Rochel and the daily, joint trips to her tomb, the final daf was studied and a moving siyum was conducted. These zechuyos, too, were added to contributors' "accounts!"

It's so natural, so obvious and self-understood – and yet, when you enter the Kupat Ha'ir office and hear everyone there talking about it, you can tell they're deeply moved. The implicit trust exhibited by the Gedolei Hador has an incredible, almost magical effect on the gabba'im, who are in daily contact with an incredible burden of horrific tzaros, who "kill themselves" to add more and more previously respectable but now destitute families to the list of those already receiving support. The kvitlach of the Gedolei Hador, photocopies of which are passed around the office, put a new spark in their eyes as they contemplate the fact that this trust was acquired in part thanks to them. These kvitlach relate that the Gedolei Hador see the hard work involved, see the absolute integrity, see the leshem Shamayim dominating every action. Kvitlach were never part of the repertoire of Rav Chaim Kanievsky's customs nor does anyone recall that he ever sent a kvittel for tefillah via messengers. The Sanzer Rebbe, shlit"a, too, told a gabbai from Kupat Ha'ir that he had never heard of the custom to send a kvittel for tefillah at Kever Rochel. Still, Kupat Ha'ir now has kvitlach from all the Gedolei vetzaddikei Hador. Each of them personally filled in his own name. Some added the sum they had contributed to Kupat Ha'ir as well. All were entrusting their tefillos at Kever Rochel to the conduit named "Kupat Ha'ir." And that, you will admit, is surely reason to be moved!

"He who believes in tzedakos believes in tefillos as well," we say at Kupat Ha'ir. "Whoever is aware of the absolute integrity; whoever knows from up close to what degree Kupat Ha'ir is careful never to deviate from its founding principles; whoever knows that for years on end, every single penny in contributions has gone directly to the needy; whoever appreciates the fact that no personal considerations ever come into play and that every single action is carried out under the guidance of the Gedolei Hador; whoever has heard about the degree of the Gedolei Hador's personal involvement in Kupat Ha'ir – someone who knows and appreciates all this believes with his whole heart that Kupat Ha'ir's tefillos are carried out with the same level of responsibility." Because special prayer sessions, too – whether for forty consecutive days or forty consecutive days and nights or special tefillos on behalf of people who need a yeshuah – require endless self-sacrifice, impeccable organization and no small amount of mesirus nefesh in order to ensure that the promises are indeed kept. Without demeaning anyone, it often happens that the gabba'im of Kupat Ha'ir receive phone calls from various organizations who promised their contributors varios tefillos, only to find they cannot possibly deliver. "Please help us," they plead. "We promised forty days at the Kosel/Amuka/Me'aras Hamachpeila/Miron – and it's not working out. Every day something else comes up. We gave people our word and we want to keep it but it's impossible. Can your avreichim daven for our contributors as well?"
