Dr. Farouk Shami Chairman and Founder, Farouk Systems

A pioneering figure in the beauty industry and the father of ammonia-free hair color, Dr. Farouk Shami is renowned for his entrepreneurship and philanthropy. In 1986, he created Farouk Systems, Inc., introducing revolutionary brands that would transform the haircare industry: CHI, BioSilk, and Sunglitz. Driven by his commitment to innovation, education, and protecting the environment, Farouk Systems, Inc.’s global reach has expanded to over 150 countries and is available on every continent. Beyond his business success, Dr. Shami has given over 17 million in aid to Covid relief, natural disaster relief, scholarships, and more. His story exemplifies the power of passion and perseverance and continues to inspire others in both business and social impact.

PAST SPIRIT OF LIFE HONOREES

The Spirit of Life® Award is City of Hope’s highest honor.

City of Hope created The Spirit of Life® Award to recognize special volunteer leaders who exemplify City of Hope values: compassion, service with a sense of urgency, integrity, curiosity, excellence and collaboration.

Every year, esteemed honorees from diverse industry groups lead year-long fundraising campaigns and host events on behalf of City of Hope, helping to raise millions of dollars for cancer and diabetes research and care.

City of Hope modeled the award design after a statue crafted by artist Robert Russin, which he named “Spirit of Life” and dedicated to City of Hope in 1967. The statue sits atop a fountain and greets visitors at the entrance to City of Hope’s original campus near Los Angeles. The design — later adopted into City of Hope’s logo — celebrates the concept of family and our longstanding commitment to holistic and compassionate care.

NATIONAL BEAUTY INDUSTRY

The National Beauty Industry (NBI) has a tradition of caring that unites professionals from across the country. For close to 40 years, the National Beauty Industry (previously the National Professional Salon Industry Group) has been committed to supporting the critical and lifesaving work of the doctors and researchers of City of Hope.

Founded in 1981 by Jack Stork of Chicagoland Hairdressers Magazine and Sandra Garfield of h•a•i•r international, it’s a tradition of caring that unites executives, professionals and colleagues from all over the country and every segment of the beauty industry.
