THE HAVEN OF PEACE
Four Points by Sheraton Dar es Salaam, New Africa Hotel is the oldest and most historic hotel in the ever expanding and vibrant city of Dar es Salaam. Dar es Salaam derives its name from Arabic language meaning “The Haven of Peace”. Dar es Salaam is now the largest city and serves as the lifeline of the country by being the financial capital.
The original New Africa Hotel was built by the Germans as the o cial residence of Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1896 and subsequently served as a German O cers’ Mess. Back in early 1900’s Dar es Salaam was the biggest German colony outside of China. The Germans also built the Lutheran Church which stands right in front of New Africa Hotel as a monumental landmark. During the First World War, New Africa Hotel became a hospital to serve the country and took care of the wounded. Post war, it was converted into a hotel by the British.
The city of Dar es Salaam has grown around this historic landmark hotel. From being a hotel where rooms were reserved only for international tourists to being a household name for the locals, New Africa Hotel has come a long way since 1896.
The government bought the hotel in August 1965. It was subsequently managed by Hallmark Hotels (Tanzania) Limited for the National Development Corporation and was later privatized, renovated and run by the present management in 1993.
It was immediately obvious that this hotel, which occupies one of Dar es Salaam’s prime sites, was to fulfil a key role in the government’s policy of tourist development. Therefore, a redevelopment and expansion programme was necessary. The hotel has ever since undergone a substantial upgrade and now stands proudly in Dar es Salaam’s bustling CBD as a historic landmark o ering world class services. Ever since Tanzania gained independence in 1961, New Africa Hotel has served the country well and takes pride in its rich historic heritage. The hotel has had the privilege of hosting Mwalimu Julius Nyerere (country’s first president) and various head of state from across the world during this journey. Looking at old photographs of the hotel, which have been treasured and preserved, one can still recognise its original architecture, cleverly redesigned to suit the 20th century.
Throughout its long history from protectorate East Africa - Tanganyika, to a proud and growing Republic of Tanzania, the hotel has maintained a status and character that optimizes continuity and values, with a touch of nostalgia beautifully balanced with the needs of the modern world.
