A combined extension and improvement project with extensions added to two areas of Norton Community Primary School using SIPs panel builds which would reflect the schools existing architecture, as well as the construction of a new dining room area. As the site was in continued use by pupils and staff at the school with access being through a shared gate the project would need to be carefully coordinated to ensure no disruption to the school during operational hours.

Project Solution
Project Evaluation On completion of the build Mansells site manager praised the hard work and diligence of the K-Panels team, commenting that the build had been swift, professional and of a good standard with K-Panels site operatives ensuring the site was left clean and ready for follow on trades. The steel frame to the dining hall area had been manufactured with SIPs incorporation in mind, which made fixing details and erection of the structure a speedy and simple process. With the cooperation of the principal contractor and concentrated effort from K-Panels site team the build programme was maintained and a delivered to the satisfaction of the client.
To enable the principal contractor to continue accessing areas of the site, K-Panels SIPs build was phased to assist in keeping access routes open, with areas of the build being completed at later dates to prevent obstruction to site traffic and plant machinery. With a 3 week build programme to complete a new build structure and two areas of extensions to the existing school, every effort was made to ensure that working hours on site could be maximised by careful planning and coordination of the on site team. Essential crane operations were planned round school hours as the geography of the site meant it necessary to crane panels over the existing buildings in order to build the teaching rooms extension to the rear of the site which was enclosed on three sides by school buildings and pupils play areas which remained in use throughout the build. Kingspan TEK panels were used to form the dining area, with a long span low pitch roof and decorative finished on interior glulam beams adding character to the finished builds décor. Pupils were encouraged to be involved with the build and measures taken by the contractor such as installing viewing panels and engaging staff and students meant the build was an exciting experience for those attending the school.
