Balloons Aloft getting bigger and better BY JENNIFER DECKER jdecker@kpcnews.net

ANGOLA — As they get ready for summer, a growing number of aviation fans will likely put the third annual Balloons Aloft on their calendars. The two-day festival celebrating balloons and aviation will be held Friday, July 6 and Saturday, July 7 at Tri-State Steuben County Airport. Admission is free. The event is co-organized once again by Marsha and Walt Drewes, who said 31 balloons from across the country will be featured, weather permitting. “Our main draw is the word ‘free.’ In this economy, that’s the word people look for,” Walt said. “We’ve tried to keep it family friendly. We’re focusing on military,” Marsha said. “We’ve introduced special shapes (balloons) — (Post) Sugar Bear, a birthday cake, a penguin.” The hot air balloons will be the focus at a competition from 6:30-8:30 p.m. both days after a mass launch. It will be followed by an illumination 9-10 p.m. both nights. Saturday, July 7 from 7-8:30 a.m. there will be a hot air balloon competition and pole grab. Hot air balloons cannot be steered, so times are tentative depending on the weather. Aviation wise, a C-47 Skytrain will fly over Saturday, July 7. It was one of the prime people movers during World War II. A restored P51C Mustang will also visit Angola as part of a special commemora-

Fun on the lakes includes wakeboarding fundraisers BY MATT GETTS mattg@kpcnews.net

Two successful charitable fundraisers are set to be held again in the coming weeks, with both taking advantage of what’s left behind when a boat passes by. The Ice Breaker Wakefest, with proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society, will be held May 11-13 at Bixler Lake in Kendallville. The Wake Up with RISE fundraiser will be held June 30 on Crooked Lake in Steuben County. Proceeds from the Wake Up event will held RISE, an organization that assists 200 individuals with disabilities in Steuben and DeKalb counties. Both events will have clinics and exhibi-

tions involving wakeboarding, a large rideable board that is pulled behind a powerboat. Experienced wakeboarders can perform tricks using the wake behind the boat. Of the two fundraisers, the one in Noble County has been around longest. Rome City’s Zach Lear has organized the Ice Breaker Wakefest since its inception seven years ago. He was spurred to action when both his best friend’s mother and his own grandmother died from breast cancer. Their memories keep him going, and consequently, the fundraiser. “If we let it die out, we’re letting their

cornhole, volleyball and a children’s activities center, featuring face painting and games for youths. The event will close with a fireworks show at dusk. The first year of the RISE fundraiser drew more than 200 spectators. Now that organizers have one year under their belts, bigger things are hoped for. “We’re really looking forward to it, said Erica Bailer, RISE’s director of human resources and marketing. “Last year was a success. We’re hoping it will be much bigger this year. For more information or to preregister for events, people can call 665-9408 or visit riseangola.com.

Pro wakeboarder Clayton Underwood waves to the crowd as he flies high above Bixler Lake during the Ice Breaker Wakefest in Kendallville in May 2011. Underwood and fellow wakeboarder Adam Wensink treated the crowd to high flying tricks and twist during a demonstration at the event to help raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Bed bugs aren’t just land-lovers. These pests are also popping up on boats as well. Cruisers and recreational boaters are increasingly finding bed bugs are hitching rides on the open water. It could take aggressive methods to rid a water vessel of bed bugs. Keep in mind that the bugs are very good at evading chemicals, and even bug “bombs may drive the creatures deeper into hiding. Boaters who find bed bugs on their craft may have to speak with a professional exterminator to get rid of them.

Kick back and enjoy 2012 DABA downtown art exhibit BY NICHOLE HACHA-THOMAS nthomas@kpcnews.net

AUBURN — If the Downtown Auburn Business District has its way, people from all over will be lounging around downtown this summer. In June, they’ll be sitting in 20 Adirondack chairs when DABA’s “Kick Back Adirondack Art exhibit kicks off. The solid oak chairs have been handcrafted by Pat Payton of Dink’s Woodshop and delivered to 20 DeKalb County artists who are busy transforming them into art. DABA President Mike Littlejohn he hopes the entire community will kick back and enjoy the display. “We wanted to try something a little different, but something that would appeal to the masses, too, Littlejohn said. There is no specific theme for the chairs, but artists were chosen based on themes each submitted to DABA with their application. Littlejohn said he is sure the community will be pleased with the finished products. Between 10,00 and 12,000 people take in the downtown exhibit each year, he said. “People come into town to take in the exhibit and they tell their friends and then they come into town and take the art in. It’s really very popular, Littlejohn said. The chairs will be on display through Labor Day weekend and a

wine-tasting and auction will complete the season Sept. 13 where each chair will be auctioned off by Jama Smith with National Benefit Auctions. The proceeds will be divided between DABA and the artists. DABA uses their share as seed money for the 2013 exhibit. Littlejohn said he thinks the chairs will be just as popular on the auction block. “These will be great for someone who has a lake cottage, or a porch or garden they want to display (the chairs) in, Littlejohn said. Again this year, DABA will sponsor an art project for children at the Strawberry Festival. One hundred miniature Adirondack chairs will be available for children to paint and take home.

Get Ready for Summer

Watch out for these 6 summertime dangers BY METRO CREATIVE CONNECTION

Summer can be the most fun times of the year, but it can also be the most dangerous. More accidents occur during the warm weather months than any other time of year. As people head outdoors and enjoy what summer has to offer, they’re not always the most careful. Here are potential dangers right around the corner. SUNBURN: Failure to apply — and reapply — sunblock can result in a nasty burn. Not only can it be painful, it could lead to dangerous skin cancer. DEHYDRATION: Couple hot weather with outdoor exertion and a person can quickly get thirsty. Failure to replenish liquid lost through sweating and activity can result in dehydration. Fainting, feeling nauseous and headaches can occur. FOOD POISONING: Hot weather and improperly stored food can result in food poisoning. If you’ll be eating outdoors, cold foods must remain cold and hot foods should be kept warm to prevent spoilage.

Don’t eat any food that has been sitting outside for more than an hour. Food poisoning symptoms often come on suddenly and can include vomiting and diarrhea. INSECTS: Bugs love warm weather, too. Mosquitos, bees, wasps, spiders, and all of the other winged and multi-legged creatures come out from their roosts when the temperature climbs. It’s more common for people to come in contact with potentially poisonous or bothersome insects. WATER: Drownings in pools, lakes and rivers definitely increase as the weather gets warmer. Always practice the utmost care in and around water. Safety vests are essential. VEHICLES: Longer amounts of sunshine tend to keep people outdoors longer. This can mean running errands or cruising around with the top down. With more cars on the road, vehicular accidents can increase, primarily when alcohol is involved.

Plenty to see, do and buy in Shipshewana There won’t be any shortage of fun in LaGrange County this summer, with the town of Shipshewana being the centerpiece of activities of all types. The Shipshewana Flea Market, one of the largest attractions of its type in the Midwest, is ready for another busy season. The official start date is May 1. Each year, hundreds of vendors and thousands of shoppers visit the market that offers everything from antiques to fresh fruits and vegetables. The flea market on S.R. 5 is open every Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The market will operate on extended hours during the Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day holidays, open Monday through Wednesday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. The Shipshewana Mayfest is set for May 4 and 5 with events all around the downtown area. A Shipshewana tradition since the mid1980s, this year’s theme is “The Colors of Spring. A parade, two running events, kids games, music, donkey basketball, and of course, local food, are all offered so the

public can celebrate the lighter and brighter, more festive days of summer. Special events take place from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday. Area people and groups are invited to participate in the May 5 Mayfest parade. To participate, call 260-768-4904, or visit www.Shipshewana.com for a parade entry form. At the Blue Gate Theater, three major shows are planned for the coming weeks. • “The Confessionâ€? opened on April 24: Based on books by nationally-acclaimed author Beverly Lewis, this musical drama exclusive to the Blue Gate Theater runs through August 18. • Marking his 53rd year in music, Ricky Skaggs and his bluegrass band Kentucky Thunder come to the Town Center on May 4. • A Sawyer Brown concert is set for May 5. After 23 years, 3,500 shows, gold and platinum albums, and numerous awards, this five-member band continues to offer up classic hits such as “The Dirt Road,â€? “The Walk,â€? and “Step That Step. Take steps to make sure your boat is ready for the lake BY MIKE MARTURELLO mikem@kpcnews.net

ANGOLA — Many people agonize over getting that boat ready for its winter nap, but hustle like mad to drop the boat back in the lake come spring. Area marina personnel say you should take great care with putting your boat in the water come spring so you will be ensured of being able to be out on the water all summer and possibly into the fall and enjoy your lake experience. “I would say the No. 1 thing is planning when you’re going to do it. If you have your boat at a marina, it’s the busiest time of the year, so call ahead, said Cory Archbold of Drydock Marine Center, Angola. Many people have experienced that sinking feeling of the boat not starting after you trailer it on the ramp and prepare to launch. “Make sure you check the battery, and if at all possible, run it on a hose before you take it to the ramp, said Les VanStone of Coldwater Lake Marina, Coldwater, Mich. It is recommended that you run the boat on land before taking it to the ramp, but you must be careful when you do. Marinas have special equipment to run boats in their shops, and boat owners can also access this equipment. If you have an outboard, run the motor with a set of “earmuffs hooked up to a

hose with the water turned on so the engine will stay cool. Earmuffs are a special product designed to deliver water through the intake of the outdrive of a boat. Special adapters are also available to hook up to intake hoses on inboard boat engines. Though many people do it, it is not wise to dry run boats. This can lead to damage of the water pump impeller. If this malfunctions, it could lead to overheating and possible damage to the engine. Running the boat on land also allows you to make sure everythings running fine, there are no leaks and the engine runs at the proper oil pressure. If you are not having a marina get your boat ready for the lake, there are many items you should check to make sure your boat will be ready to run properly. Here are a few items to keep in mind when getting your boat ready for the season: • Change your oil before you put the boat in. If you do not plan to change your oil, at least check the level and make sure it is correct. Also, check all fluids to make sure they are at their proper levels and the systems are not leaking, Archbold said. • Check your battery and make sure it has a full charge. “There’s nothing worse than loading everybody up, heading to the ramp and backing the boat in, only to have a dead See BOAT Page 15

battery,â€? VanStone said. • Start the season with a clean boat. “Usually we recommend the boat is detail clean at the beginning of the year so it will help your boat the rest of the year, in the summer, sunny times,â€? Archbold said. Clean the brightwork, the metal and teak, so your boat not only looks good, but to prolong the life of these parts. • Inspect the hull of the boat, or the

Barton Lake

pontoons of a pontoon boat. Throughout the summer, follow the gelcoat maintenance plan to keep oxidation at bay, particularly if you keep your boat in the lake. Clean and wax the hull, too. • Test all electronics. Bring all the electronics back on board and do a thorough test to be sure they are working properly. Test the radio, GPS, compass, depth finder, and any other marine electronics. If you plan on taking your boat to federal waters, like the Great Lakes, make sure you have all the equipment necessary on board to make sure you meet U.S. Coast Guard approval.

RV

• Make sure all drain plugs have been snugly returned to their proper place. Most important, VanStone said, is keep a straight head when you head out to the lake for the first trip of the season. Many people get so excited or they become anxious when in a long line to launch that they fail to think clearly. Sometimes, even the most basic things can get overlooked, VanStone said, like not completely unstrapping a boat from its trailer. “We had people not unstrap the boat from the trailer and launch the whole package, trailer and all,â€? VanStone said.

Because the trailer was still secured to the boat, it eventually ran aground with the unnecessary equipment being ferried along, under the boat. While there are very necessary steps to take at the beginning of the season, marina personnel say the best way to make sure your boat gets off successfully in the spring is to make sure it is properly put away in the fall. This means checking all of the fluids, changing the oil and putting the boat to bed clean. “It’s pretty basic if you’ve done all the right stuff in the fall, VanStone said.
