Regional recycling agency makes switch to single stream effort The Northeast Indiana Solid Waste Management District recently made a change to single-stream recycling. Single-stream recycling, also known as fully commingled or singlesort recycling, refers to a system in which all paper fibers, plastics, metals and other containers are mixed in a collection truck, instead of being sorted by the depositor into separate commodities and handled separately throughout the collection process. The single-stream option replaces the dual-stream option, where people separate certain recyclable materials and place them in separate containers for collection. “Residents can now enjoy the convenience of placing all accepted materials into one bin,” said Executive Director Steve Christman. “There has been a history of segregating the recycling bins themselves. If it is a material the district accepts as part of this program, it can all go in one bin.” “Their take in doing it all in one bin, when they do a single stream, it makes it easy for them to sort it out. it’s all getting emptied into one big truck, so it’s getting mixed anyways,” Ashley Howe, administrative assistant with the Northeast Indiana Solid Waste Management District, said. The process saves time and makes recycling easier. Instead of sorting recycled materials twice, once when placed in bins and also at the sorting facilities, facilities only sort items once and process each material per its required processes. “It’s helping our bins not overflow because the bins have been overflowing, the cardboard especially. Since the amount of items of the glass and papers containers are minimal, it’s helping to not have recyclables
everywhere,” Howe said. Items accepted at the recycling center include glass jars and bottles, magazines and telephone books, newspapers, soft-cover and hard-cover books, paper towel and toilet paper rolls and junk mail. Once items get transferred to sorting facilities, the sorting process relies on multiple people to get the items where they need to go, according to Howe. “It’s a pretty quick process. All of the truck drivers, they dump their load right in the facility and then it goes right into and on the conveyor. The first people sort out any junk; then there’s paper, then it gets sorted into different areas that the plastic goes to, the cardboard goes to,” Howe said. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates the total generation of municipal solid waste in 2015 totaled 262.4 million tons, approximately 3.5 million tons more than the amount generated in 2014. Paper and paperboard products made up the largest percentage of all the materials in MSW and yard trimmings comprised the third largest material category, estimated at 34.7 million tons, or 13.3 percent of total generation, in 2015. Plastic products accounted for 13.1 percent of generation, coming from durable goods and the containers and packaging categories. In addition, 3.1 million tons of selected consumer electronics were generated, representing less than 2 percent of MSW generation. Selected consumer electronics include products such as TVs, VCRs, DVD players, video cameras, stereo systems, telephones and computer equipment. Thus, it’s no surprise that use of the

facilities in the four-county area has gone up. “We have noticed just how wonderful it is that they’re using all the bins. As far as materials, it’s about the same. Cardboard is the one we see the most,” Howe said. The LaGrange County and Steuben County convenience centers are just one resource for recycling bulkier items that might not fit in one trash bin or the recycling bins at the local recycling center. The Residential Problem Waste Program runs Fridays from 8 a.m. to noon at the Ashley convenience center. The program is split into two parts: paint, oil and the chemical collection program and the batteries, bulb, tire and electronics collection program. During the growing seasons, NISWMD sites will also accept yard waste such as leaves and brush, which is often free to residents of that county. Each town has its own rules regarding yard waste curbside pick-up dates and times, and whether they do it, so people can also check with their city hall if they’re not sure where bags of leaves should go. Businesses who have large quantities of items to dispose of are urged to call ahead if they plan to use any facility. Each location operates differently. There are fees associated with each site, so Howe recommends looking those up before you go. A $5 per vehicle minimum fee is charged for the paint, oil and chemical collection program, which disposes of used motor oil, antifreeze, cleaning fluids of all types, fertilizers, weed killers, bug sprays and more. For the battery and electronics collection program, the cost varies, ranging from $1 each per battery to $10 for large truck and semi tires. Electronics are also processed, so televisions, monitors and copiers are $5 per item, while microwaves and larger units cost more. The other Steuben County location at 2251 W. C.R.175N in Angola changes hours based on the summer and winter seasons. It accepts household material, as well as appliances, dump trucks and trailers and even old rusted barrels that might otherwise rust and decompose in someone’s yard. More information on recycling facilities is available at niswmd.org.

Steuben getting group to advocate for trail development A group to advocate for future trails development in Steuben County is getting organized. “The purpose of this group is to promote, advocate and assist with trail development in Steuben County and incorporated areas within our community,” said information sent to prospective advocacy group members. Fort Wayne Trails Inc. has provided some guidance on how to get a group started in Steuben County. Steuben County Highway Engineer Jen Sharkey recently attended a regional trails meeting where she learned about local non-profits that are existing or are being formed in order to get citizen involvement in trail development and funding. A strong trails organization exists in Allen County. Sharkey has been working with Jennifer Danic, executive director of the Steuben County Community Foundation, and June Julien, executive director of the Steuben County Tourism Bureau, to get such a group formed locally. The group will most likely take form as a stand-alone nonprofit organization, separate of government. Long term, a consortia of government leaders envision trails linking all across the state. For northeast Indiana, the trail that’s dubbed the Poka-Bache, would run from Pokagon State Park in Steuben County south to Ouabache State Park in Wells County. Sharkey is currently working on getting grant money to fund a study on development of the local trail to the south, taking it from Commons Park in Angola, south along Old U.S. 27 to the Steuben-DeKalb line. It is hoped this trail will eventually link with an existing trail that runs along Old 27 in Waterloo.

Snowshoeing now available at Pokagon State Park A couple times during the 2017-18 winter season families were not able to cross country ski at Pokagon State Park either because there wasn’t enough snow or the trails had not been groomed. And that included one Cameron Clark and family, the same Cameron Clark who is director of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Both times, an alternative was offered: snowshoeing. And both families loved it, said Nicky Ball, Pokagon interpretive naturalist. “It’s a good workout. It’s a great way to stay in shape in the winter,” Ball said. And now more families, singles, whatever, can take advantage of snowshoeing at Pokagon — as long as there’s snow. This year the park has started making available snow shoes for rent at the park’s Nature Center. And unlike the cross country ski trails, only 2 inches of snow is needed to snowshoe. And the trails don’t have to be groomed. During the winter, Nature Center personnel hold snowshoeing workshops to introduce people to this mode of transportation. Unlike cross country skiing or other winter pursuits, snowshoeing is not a whole lot different than walking. It just takes some getting used to. “We’ll show you how to put them on, maybe try them out at the Nature Center,” Ball said. There isn’t really any special gear needed, other than the snowshoes themselves. Ball suggests wearing waterproof boots and snow pants or some other leg wear that’s waterproof. People who do take advantage of renting snowshoes at Pokagon — they’re only $5 a day — are advised to stay on the marked trails. “You want to stay on the trails, I would say,” Ball said. A nice, easy hike would be to take Trail 1, which can be picked up at the Nature Center. “I would say Trail 1 definitely because it is flat and it does a loop around the Nature Center,” Ball said. There are many more challenging trails at the park, but Ball would advise staying away from, for example, the part of Trail 3 that heads up to Hell’s Point, a very steep hill with stairs. For the adventurous, they could try to conquer all of the trails, cutting off

Hell’s Point by taking its intersection with Trail 6. A hike of all the trails would be about 8 miles, but that’s including Hell’s Point. Ball said having snowshoes available for rent also gives people an opportunity to try snowshoeing before buying some, only to find one doesn’t like the winter pursuit. Still, she said, “It’s the least expensive winter activity.” While snowshoeing offers another winter activity at Pokagon, it also is a way for people who are waiting for sleds at the toboggan slide to have something to do. Pokagon offers traditional snowshoes for adults. For children, there will be 12 pair, which are less traditional. Half will leave dinosaur prints in the snow and the other six blink while the child wearer walks. Snowshoes will be available when the Nature Center is open in the winter, which is noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and holidays. Snowshoe rental is on a first-come, first-served basis. No reservations will be taken.

COMPOST AND ITS BENEFITS What is Compost?
Compost is the product resulting from the controlled biological decomposition of organic material that has been sanitized through the generation of heat and stabilized to the point that it is beneficial to plant growth. Compost bears little physical resemblance to the raw material from which it originated. Compost is an organic matter resource that has the unique ability to improve the chemical, physical, and biological characteristics of soils or growing media. It contains plant nutrients but is typically not characterized as a fertilizer. From the traditional growing of plants to novel uses in stormwater management and climate change mitigation, the production and use of compost has a bright future!
Benefits of Using Compost
• Improves the soil structure, porosity, and density, thus creating a better plant root environment. • Increases infiltration and permeability of heavy soils, thus reducing erosion and runoff. • Improves water holding capacity, thus reducing water loss and leaching in sandy soils. • Supplies a variety of macro and micro-nutrients. • May control or suppress certain soil-borne plant pathogens. • Supplies significant quantities of organic matter. • Improves cation exchange capacity (CEC) of soils and growing media, thus improving their ability to hold nutrients for plant use. • Supplies beneficial microorganisms to soils and growing media. • Improves and stabilizes soil pH. • Can bind and degrade specific pollutants. • Can closely simulate the characteristics of wetland soils, thereby encouraging the reestablishment of native plant species • Can be used with great success as a mulch for erosion control. • Immature compost also can act as mild herbicides to control weeds.
