Homestead to stage fairy tale parody By Garth Snow gsnow@kpcnews.net

Actors learn about themselves by learning about their characters, says Vicky Malooley. The director of Homestead High School’s “Once Upon a Mattress” said the acting experience “broadens your horizons and the lens through which you see the world. And it helps you understand.” Malooley chose the spring musical for another reason, too — because it’s fun. “It’s a parody of ‘The Princess and the Pea’ fairy tale,” she said. “But it’s a kind of unconventional fairy tale and it kind of turns it up on its head.” “I chose the show because it has a lot of strong female characters, and we have a lot of phenomenal senior girls every year, but especially this year,” Malooley said. “And it has a lot of strong character roles, characters that are coming to life on

Daughter of Jimmy Clark chases tennis court dream By Rick Farrant rfarrant@ fwbusiness.com

Jimmy Clark was sitting there in his family room talking about tennis dreams he would never see, his face gaunt, his voice weak and his eyes hollow with the knowing certainty that this was a battle he would not win. In 12 short days after that videotaped interview, he would be gone at age 67, his daughter and his wife lying beside him as

he took his last breath in the early morning hours of May 30, 2012. All day Clark long, his daughter had talked to him, though she wasn’t sure he could hear her from the fortress of his illness. “I just told him it was OK,” Cambi Clark said. “He was always so afraid

of death. It was something he always talked about. So you could tell he was fighting it throughout the whole day. And I just said, ‘It’s OK. You can go. Everything will be fine.’” Fine, because his daughter had come home for good and would help carry out his vision of a bigger, better community tennis center that could change the lives of young people — just as tennis See DREAM, Page A2

The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation announced that Jamie Baer, a senior at Homestead High School, has won the national John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest for High School Students. Baer’s prize-winning essay tells the story of former New York State Sen. Roy McDonald, who, in June 2011, crossed party lines to vote in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage in the state. Baer will be honored on May 5 at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston. She will also receive a $10,000 award for her first-place essay. The national essay contest is sponsored by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation and supported by John Hancock Financial. The Kennedy Foundation will cover the costs

for Baer and her parents to attend the ceremony. Homestead instructor Connie Baer Christophersen also will receive a $500 award to use toward a school project that encourages student leadership and civic engagement. Another Homestead senior also placed among the top 10 essayists. Victoria Barnard was awarded honorable mention for her essay on on former U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana. The annual Profile in Courage Essay Contest invites high school students from across the nation to write an essay on an act of political courage by a U.S. elected official. The contest is a companion program of the John F. Kennedy Profile in See ESSAY, Page A7
