“Faith & Family” is a fitting theme for the 2013 Canal Days, said festival committee President Jon Stauffer. “I think that’s really important,” he said. “Especially in this day and age. There are a lot of things that are scary in this world. The one thing that we can rely on as Americans is our faith and our family.” Canal Days returns to Broadway Street and Schnelker Park from Tuesday through Saturday, June 4 to 8. “We look forward to having a very good festival, good weather, just an all around good week,” Stauffer said. The festival theme corresponds to the decision to invite the Sidewalk Prophets to perform on the main stage from 8:15 p.m.10:15 p.m. Saturday. “That’s going to be really huge,” Stauffer said. East Allen County high school graduates might be allowed to buy the iPads they’ve carried throughout their senior year. School board member Arden Hoffman offered that suggestion May 7. The board asked Director of Accountability/Technology William Deal and Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services Kirby Stahly to explore that possibility. A report is expected in time for the next regular board meeting, at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 21. Hoffman said some constituents had approached him about the possibility of keeping their iPads. He said students should have an option “to preserve their apps and preserve their work with that iPad as they’re going into college.” “Also, I understand that the iPad 3 is no longer being sold,” Hoffman said. The school district is contracted to buy the iPads on a three-year replacement cycle. “Generally when you have a capital lease the bank actually owns the equipment until the last payment’s made,” Deal told the East Allen County Times. He said he and Stahly would explore the options, as the board instructed. In another technology matter, Deal said the parent-notification system is being replaced. The current system has been in use about 10 years, he said. Principals can record messages, and the phone system then dials each parent’s phone. The problem is that only 10 phone lines are available to dial those calls. In the event of multiple messages, he said, that notification can take up to two days. “The new SchoolMessenger that we have can pop everything out in 20 minutes,” Deal said. Parents can be notified by phone, email or text, or by multiple means.

Groups such as the Kiwanis are part of “the unheralded army that will continue to make the lives of children better,” according to Allen Superior Court Judge Charles Pratt. The founder of Great Kids Make Great Communities addressed five Allen County Kiwanis clubs, who held their first joint banquet at the Holiday Inn IPFW. Delegates expressed hope that “An Evening Celebrating Unity in Service to the Community and Youth” will become an annual event. Pratt served as keynote speaker for an audience of about 150 Kiwanis and guests. He recounted stories of violence in Allen County, and of efforts to combat the influences that contribute to that behavior. Pratt’s program will offer free training to community leaders in May.
