Robin Davis, Melba Edwards and Kenny Edwards discuss plans for Zanesville Homespun Day. Davis operates Davis Family Restaurant in Markle. Her parents drove in from Zanesville for breakfast.

Tara Bowersock and Judy Stephenson will marshal the parade, watch it step off at 10 a.m., and watch it return at 10:25. Alice Castleman will scale back service at County Line Pizza. It’s the only restaurant in

to grow and build from there,” he said. “There are a few key components that people associate particularly with the football program, and I think one of them is the marching band. That

really is something that people associate with the college atmosphere.” Coach Kevin Donley welcomes the addition of a marching band on game days. See BAND, Page A15

A tradition that has enhanced college game days for more than a century is coming to southwest Fort Wayne this fall. The University of Saint Francis marching band will add to the game day experience of home football games, beginning Sept. 10. For director Steven Kandow, the completion of an 18-month project is just the first step toward another level of excellence. Many of the band members will return from last year’s practice season. They will share the Bishop D’Arcy Stadium turf with recruits from high schools throughout northeast Indiana and beyond. “This is the first year that we will have the uniforms. This is the first year with the color guard. We’ll have a first season and we’ll continue

Serving Southwest Allen County & Roanoke

When the people of Zanesville say they’re going to town, they’re probably going to Fort Wayne. It might be Huntington, though, or Ossian, or Roanoke, or Bluffton. The town that straddles the Allen-Wells County Line is not the hub of either county. It is, though, the home of three churches and dozens of homes. Once a year, it’s the center of a celebration. Homespun Day will fill all of six hours on Saturday, Aug. 20. You’re invited. Melba and Kenny Edwards will work the 34th Zanesville Homespun Day, just as they worked the first festival and as they have worked every festival since. Their daughter, Robin Davis, will help set up the car show, prepare the food and help close up the festival at 2 p.m.

Mazie’s owners understood that pets are family. So when her 4-year-old Maltipoo became ill last summer, Lisa Clemens of Fort Wayne took Mazie to an emergency veterinarian in Fort Wayne and then to the Purdue Small Animal Hospital in West Lafayette. Clemens was able to afford the several thousand dollars in veterinary bills. She was able to make decisions about Mazie’s care without weighing the care against the cost. Despite the care and the cost, Mazie died. Clemens has organized the Allen County Area Assistance Fund to help other families that face such decisions. The See PETS, Page A11
