DeKalb County Free Fall Fair marks 87th year A tradition since 1932, the DeKalb County Free Fall Fair returns for its 87th year, Sept. 24-29 in Auburn. Nicknamed “America’s Largest Family Reunion,” the fair draws huge crowds due to its free admission policy and all-free shows. People from throughout the region flock to the fair’s midway that surrounds the courthouse square and extends along connecting streets, offering amusement rides, games and food vendors. Free entertainment events take place every night on the main stage just southeast of the square, including a queen contest and local school choirs, plus national and regional acts performing county, rock and gospel music. Livestock events take place at the fairgrounds on Union Street, with horse-pulling teams, saddle-riding competitions and judging of the best cattle, sheep, swine and goats. The largest merchants’ tent at any Indiana fair covers six city blocks with exhibits on both sides featuring more than 200 vendors and organizations.

Middaugh Hall and the Exhibit Hall on the fairgrounds house displays of local residents’ best garden produce and flowers, baked and canned goods, photographs and artwork, hobby collections, handiwork, and antiques. The fair features four parades, highlighted by the grand finale parade at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29. The big procession circles the entire fair area and includes dance teams, floats, marching bands, equestrian units, and antique cars and tractors. A parade of queen candidates takes place Monday night, with the annual Scout Parade on Wednesday evening and the Pet Parade featuring costumed children and their pets on Friday morning. A popular addition to the fair last year, barbecue alley attracted a sampling of the area’s best meat vendors. Other popular treats include the doughnuts made on site by the Spencerville Order of Eastern Star and Auburn Kiwanis Club. More information about the fair is available online at dekalbcountyfair.org.

Byler Lane makes official wine of the ACD festival BY MEGAN KNOWLES

mknowles@kpcmedia.com

Auburn holds a special place in the hearts of the owners of Byler Lane Winery. So when Byler Lane opened in 2016, the owners knew they wanted to be a part of the city’s largest celebration, the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival. “We try to be a part as much as we can of Auburn because we’re all from Auburn and we just wanted to really do an ACD wine, because it’s a big deal for Auburn to have that weekend,” Byler Lane co-owner and co-winemaker Cara Lane said. The winery is represented downtown during the festival, and in talking with organizers the idea sprang up to make an official wine, she said. The first year’s offering was a sweet red, chosen in part because of what the emerging winery had available, Lane said. “We always want to do something different from year to year because everyone likes different kinds of wine,” she said. The 2017 offering was a dry red, which required some additional planning

because “they take a lot longer to make,” Lane said. “You have to plan it quite a bit in advance because I’m getting all my stuff for harvest in (August or September) so you have to plan for that for the following year.” The 2018 ACD festival wine will be an off-dry, semi-sweet wine, which will debut at the annual Cheers to the Festival fundraiser and celebration Aug. 25. “We will have it down there that evening for that party and we will also start selling it here at the winery” starting Aug. 24, Lane said. The wine will be for sale “as long as it lasts,” she added, saying a lot of people buy the wine for the label, which for the past two years has been the official ACD festival poster. Lane said Byler Lane enjoys being able to participate in the festival in this way. “It means a lot to us. We take pride in Auburn. We really do love Auburn. We’ve all grown up here. … We love that weekend, it’s just such a fun weekend,” she said. Byler Lane is located at 5858 C.R. 35 in Auburn.

Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum KPC NEWS SERVICE The Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum, at 1600 S. Wayne St., celebrates the history of the Auburn Automobile Co., which from 1900 to 1937 created cars that later would become beloved classics. The museum first opened to the public July 4, 1974. There was a grand opening later that year during the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival, which was then in its 19th year. Four years later, in 1978, the international headquarters administration building of the Auburn Automobile Co. was put on the National Register of Historic Places. On April 5, 2005, the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Facility was named a National Historic Landmark. Since its founding, the museum has added a banquet hall (Willennar Hall), a mezzanine level and education room, an additional gallery on the third floor and the Collection Conservation Center, which serves as a maintenance shop and another education center. The Education and Exhibit Plaza was added in 2016. The museum offers more than 120 cars on display over three levels, as well as nine automotive-themed galleries. Sixty-five percent of the automobiles on display are owned by the museum, while about

35 percent are cars on loan from other museums and private owners. In addition to its collection of classic cars, the museum features art deco design and architecture. The museum is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed only on New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Admission rates are $12.50 per person for adults or $10.50 per person with groups of 12 or more (reservations are necessary at least one week in advance to receive the group rate). Children ages 6-18 can enter for $7.50 per person, and children younger than 6 are admitted free. There is also a family rate of $32 for parents and dependent children at the same address who are 18 or younger. Docent-led tours are available for groups and families, but must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance. In addition, the museum offers study groups for schools and children’s groups. Admission is $1 per student, and adult chaperones, teachers and bus drivers are admitted free. To schedule a study trip to the museum, email info@automobilemuseum.org or call 925-1444.
