He made the purchase for about $3,000 per acre, and today farmland in that part of the county can sell for between $6,000 per acre and $7,000 per acre. “Around here, if it’s fertile, ditched good and has the capability of getting 200 bushel (per acre) corn, it will do that,” he said. Pettigrew is among the many farmers in northeast Indiana and throughout the Midwest corn belt who have benefited as low interest rates and higher prices for corn and soybeans in recent years have helped push up the price of farmland.
