Covington Plaza expects 80 artists to show works

For more than 20 years, the Covington Art Fair has drawn thousands of local, regional and national visitors to Covington Plaza each summer.

The open-air, family-oriented art fair will take place from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, June 24, and from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, June 25, at Covington Plaza, near the intersection of Covington Road and West Jefferson Boulevard in Fort Wayne.

This year’s installment of the Covington Art Fair will feature more than 80 artists, some of whom hail from as far as Colorado and Florida.

“We’ve had as few as 65 and as many as 105, but it usually averages 80-85,” Glenda Stoppenhagen, coordinator for Covington Art Fair with Asher Agency Inc., said.

“This is a juried art fair.

We send out a mailing list, and we also have a company that does an email mailing list for us.

And, we also have a core of artists that are called

exempt, that don’t have to jury for this show.

They’ve been in it… they’re a group of more local and regional artists that we allow to come in every year and not have to apply.

“The bulk of the artists have to send in a CD with three pictures of their work and a picture of their booth, and it is judged by a person — we don’t really discuss who the judge is, but it is somebody locally who judges it.”

wide variety of mediums, including acrylic, oil, watercolor, photography, textiles, jewelry, pottery, glass and mixed media, which includes artists who work with a variety of materials.

Frequent local artists include Lisa Vetter and Paul Seifert of the Art Farm (mixed media), Kristy Jo Beber (pottery) and Diane Schafer-King (mixed media).

The fair doesn’t just showcase regional and national artists; it also promotes local businesses.

“Several of the artists have come for years, and I think that’s really a posi-

tive thing for us. The nice thing is, [the fair] brings a lot of people to Covington Plaza that might not have been,” Sarah Keltsch, owner of Covington Plaza’s Monogram Shoppe and More…, said.

“All the merchants — we all have a sidewalk sale too, with all sorts of different product and things like that, which is another attraction to have people come…

They block off part of the parking lot right in front of the stores so that people can walk from one end of the shopping center to the other end.”

Past years’ art fairs have

seen up to 5,000 visitors, depending on the weather.

The plaza is home to nearly 30 shops and restaurants, many of which are locally owned and operated, such as Monogram Shoppe, Merle Norman and The Olive Twist.

“Basically, the nicest thing about the art fair is it brings people out to see the shopping center. A lot of the stores in our shopping center are locally owned. People now are in a big thing about buying local, so [the art fair] gives them a chance to see what we have out here,” Keltsch said.

The lunch line began forming almost as soon as Empty Bowls began at First Presbyterian Church in Fort Wayne.

Soon the supply of 300 specially made ceramics bowls had been reduced by half, and lunchgoers kept arriving.

The Advanced Ceramics Class at IPFW presented the May 2 event as a networking opportunity and as a fundraiser, primarily for Community Harvest Food Bank. Art students and teachers from DeKalb and Huntington North high schools also created and donated bowls. Seth Green, the assistant professor of ceramics at IPFW, set the project in motion.

For a donation of $15, guests selected a ceramic bowl. They also enjoyed soup and bread donated by local restaurants.

Ceramics Guild President Kelly Grant said each bowl is unique.

“It’s not machine-made,” she said. “People like to have a bowl that someone made. And it’s a fun thing to do. “No two [bowls] look the same, weigh the same,

Green, the assistant professor, said Empty Bowls is a national program. “Usually it’s a community of potters who get together and make bowls and they donate the proceeds from the sale of the bowls to charitable organizations.

So in this case we’re donating 80 percent of the proceeds to Community Harvest Food Bank and 20 percent is going to the IPFW Ceramics

“It’s all about networking as an artist and as a professional. A friend and I were talking about the need to find a venue and he said ‘Why don’t you check out First Presbyterian Church?

lunch line early, accompanied by instructor Kelly Roth. “I teach Ceramics 1 all the way through 4, so this semester I have about 100 ceramics students,” Roth said. The group contributed 27 bowls.

Roth had orders for 10 bowls to take back to DeKalb.

“From start to finish a bowl could take upward of about an hour when you throw it and make sure all the walls are nice and neat and thin,” she said. “Then you need to let it dry out for a day and then trim the bottom. So at the high school we just fired them to visque — which is the first firing. Then I delivered them to Seth, and his students took care of all the glazing.”

She also did some shopping. “I snagged a couple of Seth Green’s,” she said. “He’s a pretty noteworthy artist, so a bowl of his for $15 is a good deal.”

The bowls are foodsafe, microwave-safe and are safe on the top rack of dishwashers, she said.

Grant and Ceramics Guild Vice President Allie Kruger worked to secure a $1,500 grant from the Purdue University Student Service Learning Grant Program.

“That helped us pay for the food, the bowls, the paper goods, and advertising, and we had the bread donated by Panera Bread and the soup donated by Cosmo’s,” Grant said.

She said throwing a bowl on a pottery wheel takes about 15 minutes.

“But then you have to wait for it to dry, you have to turn it over and trim the bottom, and you have to glaze it and fire it and trim it again,” she said. “So in the long haul it takes a while. We even have bowl parties where we just make a bunch of bowls and then fire them all at once.”

Grant, who will be a fifth-year IPFW student next year, said she will spend the entire year producing ceramics for

her end-of-year fine arts degree show.

She got her start in ceramics at Carroll High School. “In the 10th grade I took ceramics and I just fell in love with it,” she said. “You grow up drawing and coloring and then you don’t get introduced to something like wheelthrowing until you get that opportunity. They have a great art program there.”

Green said he would not rule out buying a bowl for himself. “But I want to allow the community to come and have first dibs on the bowls,” he said. Besides, he said, he has a few bowls at home.

He said the event had a purpose beyond making bowls, and even beyond funding worthy causes. Students need to know how to survive in a contracting arts world.

“This is one of the main reasons I’m doing this event is because it is difficult to get a job and the community in which an artist lives is going to be what supports that artist,” he said.

“So one of the things that I want to instill in my students is the importance of rubbing shoulders with good community partners and making connections, and networking.”

They networked in earnest, serving food, wrapping bowls, offering chances on deluxe bowls, and answering questions.

The guests included church members, downtown office and medical workers, and the curious diners and shoppers.

Jason Morris of Fort Wayne took his time selecting a take-home bowl from the tables of green, blue and white bowls, some wider, some deeper. “There are so many colors, too many choices,” he said.

Empty Bowls even has a head-start on next year.

About 100 bowls went unsold, and will be saved for another day, Grant said in an email.

American Legion Post 160 in Roanoke has raised more than $100,000 for Honor Flight Northeast Indiana. Marge Dinius has been prominent in raising that money.

In fact, Dinius is one of the most active volunteers, said Tom Meyers, a member of Post 160 and a board member of Honor Flight. “She just comes up and talks to people. She’s down here all the time, doing whatever she can do,” Meyers said.

HFNEI has transported more than 1,600 veterans to Washington, D.C., to see the memorials constructed in honor of America’s service members. Each veteran has been accompanied by a guardian, often a family member, to assist the veteran in navigating a busy day among the monuments.

Dinius has not had that experience, not in person. But when Post 160 presented HFNEI with three virtual reality headsets, Dinius took the virtual tour.

Honor Flight tech coordinator Michael Thena, in a press briefing at Post 160, said the Roanoke post made the equipment possible. “Back in March we had a veteran who had to cancel from a flight,” Thena said. “It was veteran (Robert) Claypool. And shortly thereafter an initiative got started so he could enjoy his opportunity to go to Washington, D.C. Well, lo and behold, they were able to to get ahold of Honor Everywhere out of Missouri. Honor Everywhere is the organization that was responsible for creating the virtual tour of the memorials.

able to administer the virtual Honor Flight for veteran Claypool, but I think six to eight other veterans at that time that were (medically) unable to go to Washington, D.C.” Soon after, Post 160 reached out to help again, by funding the purchase of three virtual reality headsets, at a total cost of $1,875.

HFNEI has a list of veterans who are unable to go to D.C. for various medical reasons. “So they will now have the opportunity to have a shortened version of the tour of the memorials that follows the Honor Flight Missouri,” Thena said. “It’s going to be a great opportunity for our veterans, about an 8-minute-long tour.”

Thena helped World War II veteran Frederick Johns to straighten the headsets. “You can look up, down, left, right — you’re gonna have a tour,” Thena said.

Johns, who lives “across the street” from the Legion and who has taken the daylong tour with Honor Flight, said the headset tour was realistic.

While he said it could not

evoke the emotion that came with the welcome he experienced in Washington, Johns said it was a pleasant reminder of that tour.

As she has done since 2010, Dinius waited as someone else took the tour. Her late husband, William A. Dinius, was a veteran. Her son, William E. Dinius, is a veteran and a three-time commander of Post 160. The Honor Flight is for those who have served, Dinius said.

She has served in her own way.

“When I first started out collecting donations (for Honor Flight), they’d say ‘what’s that, what’s that?’

They had never heard of it,” Dinius said. “And now they either saw it on TV or they’ve read about it and the response is so different.”

She recalled leaving a business where she had sought a donation. A woman who had overheard the conversation approached her in the parking lot and asked if she could donate. “She was from Ohio and said ‘Can I donate to that?’ and I said ‘Yes, but this is northeast Indiana.’

And she said, ‘Well, my grandmother and my grandfather were both veterans.’ And she started digging in her purse and she gave me $82 and she apologized because it wasn’t more.”

Dinius continues collecting so that others can go on Honor Flight. “I am quite content to be in the background,” she said the evening the headsets were introduced.

That evening, too, she waited for the second route of tours. Tech-savvy Thena placed a headset on Dinius’ head and explained how to control the volume. She listened as heroes’ hero Gary Sinise introduced the tour.

She watched as veterans arrived by plane, their wheelchairs so realistic that an observer almost instinctively moved aside for the digital servicemen.

She watched as a veteran and a guardian approached the Vietnam Wall, their reflections shining from the stone.

After eight minutes, she was home from her tour.

Her forehead was slightly red from the headset.

Her brows and eyes were moist. “I thought it was very marvelous what they can do today, and I thought that was done

Firefighter grads embark on ‘noble and just calling’

A training program encompassing 15 area fire departments culminated recently in the awarding of certificates to 22 firefighters.

Aboite Township Fire Department Captain Steve Thurber and Assistant Chief Tyler Martin awarded the honors at a May 13 ceremony at Homestead High School.

Thurber and Martin were co-instructors of the class, which covered more than 230 hours of training over eight months.

Firefighters received their certifications for Firefighter Phase I and Firefighter Phase II and for Hazmat Operations and Awareness. The Indiana Department of Homeland Security District 3 training was held at the Aboite station on Aboite Center Road adjacent to Homestead High School, at the Auburn fire station, and at the Southwest Fire Service station in Fort Wayne. In the graduation program, instructors also thanked the Fort Wayne Fire Department for its assistance.

The instructors awarded the Mental Attitude Award to Huntertown firefighters Logan Gottschalk and Wyatt Gottschalk.

Thurber said the Huntertown brothers “stepped up every time, to motivate the class to continue when everybody was tired and worn out.”

Corey Springer of the Washington Township Fire Department was recognized for academic achievement. “You guys didn’t have much time between tests, and so to maintain a 97.7 percent average on the testing was a pretty difficult task,” Thurber said.

view with this newspaper, said he had set his sights on the fire service years ago. “College and career took me a different path for a little while and then I came back to it,” he said.

Noll told graduates to continue asking questions of their mentors and to continue reading. He said today’s firefighters do much more than extinguish fires. “So you’d better get ready. You’re going to be called on to do things that most people in this world would never dream of doing,” he said.

Martin said the training equipped graduates for service but they must continue learning.

“That’s what you need to ensure that everyone

from every work detail goes home,” he said. He acknowledged that the training was mentally and physically exhausting.

He told firefighters’ families to understand “that when your loved one is training, they’re basically preparing for battle.”

Whether on-duty or off-duty, a firefighter always represents the department, Thurber said.

“I’m proud of this class,” he said. “Many of you struggled with injuries and personal matters.

Many of you began to socialize with others and become lifelong friends.”

He told the graduates to stay strong, but most of all stay prepared. “A good firefighter knows how. An educated firefighter knows why,” he said.

Falcons and prey adapt, with help of city dwellers

Peregrine falcons are just one example of the numerous bird species that can be found in Fort Wayne.

According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, about 20 percent of bird species can be found in cities.

“I’m sure over a hundred species (of birds) could be found in the (Fort Wayne) city limits, with a little effort,” Stockbridge Audubon Society President Cynthia Powers said in an email.

This is a particularly exciting time of year because many migrating birds are returning from their winter habitats, she said. This includes rubythroated hummingbirds, Baltimore orioles, indigo buntings, nighthawks and chimney swifts. People can also see a variety of finches and woodpeckers.

“The key is to keep your eyes open,” Powers advised, adding places like Fox Island County Park and Eagle Marsh are great places to look for local birds. “If you get familiar with a few common species you begin to notice if there’s something different.”

Some of these birds become food for larger ones, such as the peregrine falcon. “(Peregrine falcons) are opportunistic. They feed on other small- to medium-sized birds. They like birds the size of pigeons and mourning doves and blue jays and large woodpeckers,” retired Indiana Department of Natural Resources bird biologist

John Castrale said.

Originally at home in cliffs along the Great Lakes and bluffs of the Mississippi River, peregrine falcons have adapted to urban life.

Peregrine falcons were reintroduced to Fort Wayne in 1992, with falcons nesting on top of the Indiana-Michigan Power building since 1996.

Fort Wayne is a good city for the falcons because it is a clean town, Soarin’ Hawk Raptor Rehabilitation Center Director of Development Mike Dobbs said.

The city benefits as well, as the falcons help control the rock pigeon population, he said.

Most if not all peregrine falcons in the region have been banded. This is to help track “the overall health of the ecosystem,” Dobbs said.

“Birds are nature’s only voice,” he said. “It matters where they’ve been, it matters what they’ve been exposed to. All of the birds of prey we rescue, treat and release basically give us an idea how everything is (going).”

But falcons aren’t the only birds of prey that call Fort Wayne home, Dobbs said.

“The city is populated with (Eastern screech) owls,” he said. “You don’t see them in the day because they’re up hiding in a tree somewhere but at night you’ll hear them.”

Great horn and barred owls can also be found in certain areas, Powers said.

There are ways people can help this urban bird ecosystem, she said. Residents can choose plants accordingly, having plants with red flowers to attract

Summit City Singers say ‘Thank You for the Music’ “Thank You for the Music” is the theme of The Summit City Singers’ spring 2017 concert series.

Caring for these birds is important to caring for the larger ones, Castrale said.

“First and foremost just have a clean environment because (peregrine falcons) are susceptible to contaminants, pesticides…in the food chain, so if we have clean air and clean water their prey species are going to be relatively clean,” he said.

Powers agreed.

“If you get people interested in birds pretty soon they realize that habitat is important,” she said.

City says water OK despite taste issue

The City of Fort Wayne issued a statement saying that the drinking water is safe despite a variation in the water’s tastes.

“Taste and sometimes odor changes in drinking water occur nearly every spring across the country, and in Fort Wayne,” the City said in a statement Monday, May 22. “As a result of recent heavy rains and warmer spring temperatures, our chemists at the Three Rivers Water Filtration Plant have noted a change in the taste of the water coming out of the Filtration Plant.

“The water is safe to use and drink despite the taste difference. Our staff has modified the treatment process at the plant and we expect the taste issue to clear up by the end of the week.”

Special Abilities Day set May 28

Star*Quest observatory welcomes stargazers

The Fort Wayne Astronomical Society will hold free stargazing sessions every Saturday night (weather permitting) through November.

The newly completed Star*Quest Observatory is at Jefferson Township Park east of New Haven, where a grand opening was held May 20.

Saturday night stargazing begins one hour after sunset and continues for two hours.

FWAS President Larry Clifford and project manager Gene Stringer spoke on behalf of the society at the grand opening. A 3-by-6-foot Plexiglas plaque etched with stars lists the names of donors to the project.

Also on hand were representatives of Viridian Architectural Design and Robert Koors Custom Building and Design and the newly appointed observatory director, Mark Anderson. Local dignitaries cut the ceremonial ribbon.

demonstration of the opening of the two roof wings and took a tour of the viewing area and the control room.

FWAS members have been working toward this moment for 10 years. They raised almost $250,000 to build the state-of-the-art structure and officially took possession of it in late December. They then finished installing

flooring, did the interior painting, added special red lighting to preserve night vision and completed the landscaping. It covers a total of 1,000 square feet and includes the observation area that runs the length of the building and a combination control room/office/library/ storage space.

The observatory’s delta-wing roof is opened

by power winches. Half of it rolls off on exterior rails to the east and the other half rolls to the west, exposing stargazers to the vast southern sky in an open-air room.

Each of the wings weighs between 3,000 and 4,000 pounds.

The FWAS uses two powerful telescopes for its programs. The Meade 16-inch RCX 400 scope can swing 360 degrees

to lock onto stars in deep space, locate nebula and maybe locate a comet or passing satellite. It can collect 6,000 times more light than the naked eye. The organization’s original 12.5-inch Harnishfegger-Crow scope remains in use.

Scopes provided by Society members will be set up on five concrete pads at the south side of the observatory for public stargazing, weather permitting, of course, until midnight.

“There is no admission charge and guests are invited to bring their own telescopes,” Stringer said. Scopes can be set up on five concrete pads at the south side of the observatory.

“We hope to eventually extend astronomy into local and area high schools and colleges and maybe even introduce it into the curriculum,” Stringer said. “Our goal is to someday have internet access so that

FWAS, which is in its 59th year, operated an observatory at Fox Island County Park for 30 years before creeping light pollution and tall trees made observing the heavens difficult. Until the new facility, the organization had been operating out of a small storage shed at Jefferson Township Park for the past 20 years.

Jefferson Township Park, which is administered by the National Park Service, is at 1730 S. Webster Road, between 3 and 4 miles east of New Haven. Visitors should take Lincoln Highway east through New Haven. It changes to Dawkins Road on the east side. Follow it past Cassad Depot to Webster Road, turn left, cross the railroad tracks and the park will be about 100 yards on the left. Turn in and take the entry road all the way to the back of the park.

Philharmonic contract restores pay, positions

Fort Wayne Philharmonic finances are strong enough to restore the orchestra to its full size and bring the pay of its musicians back to levels in place at the end of their last union contract that ended in 2013.

“We are delighted to reach a three-year agreement with our musicians and look forward to continuing to work collaboratively on a very bright future, including our upcoming 75th anniversary in just over a year,” Ben Eisbart, board chair, said in a statement.

The Fort Wayne Philharmonic, American Federation Of Musicians Local 58 agreement, announced early this month, is effective retroactively from Sept. 1 last year. It lasts through Aug. 31, 2019.

“The wonderful musicians of this orchestra and community deserve the best, and the board’s investment in them at this crucial time leading up to the Philharmonic’s 75th anniversary is such a promising endorsement,” Chuck Surack, chair-elect, said in the statement.

The Fort Wayne Philharmonic Player’s Association is represented by the Fort Wayne Musician’s Association Local 58 of the American Federation of Musicians.

Following a 20092013 contract, the musicians worked under a contract extension with a memorandum of understanding, which shortened the orchestra’s season to 33 weeks from 40 weeks, reducing their pay 17.5 percent, said Jim Mancuso, general manager.

place through the end of 2014, he said. Afterward, the Philharmonic kept to the shorter season and its musicians worked without a contract. As an additional cost cutting measure, the orchestra did not fill three vacant violin positions.

Under the new collective bargaining agreement, two of the open violin positions will be filled by the start of the next performance season this coming fall. The Philharmonic will audition violinists for the last unfilled position during its 2018-2019 season in order to have it filled for the 2019-2020 season.

The season was not lengthened beyond 33 weeks, but one of two vacation weeks always taken together around Christmas and New Year’s Day will be taken together at a different time of the year so the orchestra will be able to add performances during the week leading up to New Year’s Day. The musicians have three weeks of paid vacation time. The new flexibility allowing for

additional concerts will “help us raise revenue to keep up with the wage increases,” Mancuso said. The wages will be back up to 2013 levels during the last year of the new contract, he said.

The austerity measures were taken to resolve a $2.5 million accumulated deficit, which Mancuso said was

addressed through use of an endowment as well as the cost cutting.

As an outgrowth of a new 2017-19 strategic plan, the Philharmonic is developing a series of initiatives “to attract new arts participants and serve a larger, more diverse community,” it said in the statement.

engaging “novel artistic and venue collaborators in multilayered partnerships to reach new audiences with an expanded range of programming,” it said.

Ages 17-21 signing up for county fair pageant The Miss Allen County Queen Scholarship Pageant is seeking contestants for the 2017 Miss Allen County Queen Pageant, to take place at 6 p.m. Sunday, July 16, at Carroll High School, 3701 Carroll Road, Fort Wayne.

Miss Allen County is run in conjunction with the Allen County Fair and is open to young women 17-21 who live or go to

school in Allen County.

Contestants will compete in four categories: interview, professional wear, evening wear and on-stage question.

“It’s an opportunity for young women to grow, learn and make new friends,” sponsors said in a statement. “Through the pageant, contestants learn interview and public speaking skills, poise and,

above all, how to have confidence.”

Fort Wayne School Board appoints seven principals The Fort Wayne Community Schools Board approved the appointment of several principals, effective with the 2017-18 school year.

• Matthew Haren will become the new principal at Lane Middle School. Haren joined FWCS in 2012 as assistant principal at Lane.

He moved to Blackhawk Middle School as assistant principal the following year, and remained at Blackhawk.

Prior to FWCS, he worked for Manchester Community Schools, Wawasee Community Schools and Southwest Allen County Schools.

At Lane, he replaces Mark Bailey, who has decided to move to an assistant principal position at Kekionga Middle School.

• Frank Kline will take over as principal of Abbett Elementary School after serving as principal of Lincoln Elementary for five years. Kline joined FWCS in 1992 as a substitute teacher. He then worked as a social studies teacher at Wood Youth Center and Portage Middle School before becoming an administrative intern in 2005-06. He worked as an intern at Jefferson Middle School, and during the 2006-07 school year, he served as assistant principal at Franke Park Elementary. Prior to becoming principal at Lincoln, Kline was principal at Maplewood Elementary for five years. At Abbett, he will replace Stephanie Bourne, who served as interim principal this year.

• Clair Paul will become the principal of Lincoln Elementary School. She joined FWCS this school year

as assistant principal at Weisser Park Elementary School. Prior to coming to FWCS, she served as a district coach in East Allen County Schools and a principal with Bluffton-Harrison Schools. At Lincoln, she replaces Frank Kline, who is moving to Abbett Elementary.

• Shannon Rodgers will become principal of Harrison Hill Elementary School. She began her education career in 2005 as a teacher in Wisconsin and then worked in Georgia and Kentucky.

In 2010, she joined Fort Wayne Community Schools as a teacher at Fairfield Elementary, and in 2012, she was named assistant principal at Holland Elementary.

In 2013, she became principal of Shambaugh

Elementary. At Harrison Hill, Rodgers fills the position, which has been open since November.

• Neil Rupp will become principal at Shambaugh Elementary.

Rupp joined FWCS in 2015 as an assistant principal at Harrison Hill Elementary. At Shambaugh, he replaced Shannon Rodgers, who is moving to Harrison Hill.

• Matthew Schiebel will move from principal of Shawnee Middle School to principal of Kekionga Middle School.

He joined FWCS in 1987 and served as a science teacher at Blackhawk Middle School from 1988 until he became an administrative intern at Geyer Middle School in 2001. In 1997, he was named the FWCS Teacher of the Year and

was one of 10 state finalists. He became assistant principal of Lane Middle School in 2002 and two years later became principal of Northwood Middle School.

He moved to Shawnee in 2008. At Kekionga, he replaces Maureen Sylvester, who served as interim principal this

year.

• Maureen Sylvester will become principal of Shawnee Middle School.

She joined FWCS in 2001 as a substitute teacher. She was hired as a math teacher at Kekionga Middle School in 2002 and later also taught language arts at the school. During the

2014-15 school year, she served as an administrative intern at Memorial Park Middle School. In 2015, she returned to Kekionga as an assistant principal and filled in as interim principal this year. At Shawnee, she replaces Matt Schiebel, who is moving to Kekionga.

Hobnobben Film Festival builds on 2016 success

After a successful first year, Fort Wayne’s Hobnobben Film Festival is back and bigger than before.

For those who missed it last year, Hobnobben is a multiday, multivenue “explosion of the art of film in downtown Fort Wayne,” explained Jonah Crismore, executive director at the Cinema Center, which helps coordinate the event.

“It’s really kind of crazy there wasn’t a film festival of this size already in the region,” he said. “A big part of why we took on this project was to really kind of create that film festival experience for northeast Indiana.”

The festival offers dozens of films from June 15-18, ranging from the dramatic to the light-

Programming chairs then watched the best-rated films to whittle it down to the final list.

A lot of factors went into selecting the chosen films, Crismore said.

Hobnobben members wanted to highlight Indiana filmmakers and also include a variety of films, especially for the Short Haul exhibition, where the films range from three to 24 minutes.

“We tried to curate it so there’s a flow and so that we’re also showing off the talent that is going to be there,” Crismore said.

In addition to submitted films, there will also be the Eye-Opening Film exhibition, which will showcase films that have been showing in festivals

such as Sundance and Toronto, and the Shine On exhibition of films from the Children’s Film Festival in Seattle.

There was also a focus on nonfiction film, Crismore explained, with several offerings that will even have members of the film crew in attendance.

This offers an opportunity to show off Fort Wayne as well, he said.

In addition to the wide array of films, there will also be panel discussions and networking sessions for filmmakers.

“One of the reasons we call it Hobnobben is to expose the art of filmmaking to the community and to encourage more filmmaking,” Crismore said. “There are a lot of pockets and groups who are all filmmaking throughout the region who don’t know what others are doing. This

“We’re doing that so people can see film crews running around like a scavenger hunt and make the art of film a little more alive.”

Last year’s inaugural Hobnobben Film Festival saw about 2,000 to 2,500 guests, Crismore said, and he hopes this year will be even more popular.

“We had a preview party May 11 where festival passes were available and people were buying them like crazy to get into anything they want,” he said. “We want to become a cornerstone for the arts festival landscape in Fort Wayne.”

‘Dream’ gives students opportunities in orchestra

What started out as a way to grow from the orchestra program at two area high schools has become the largest joint orchestra in the state.

Believe in a Dream’s Exploration of Music through Orchestra began in 2010. In its first year, the orchestra sought to do two things: expose local students to performing in a mass orchestra and raise funds for the schools through the ticketed concert.

“The first year I believe we had under 100 students,” Believe in a Dream Founder and Chairman of the Board Jamal Robinson said.

“This year we’ll have over 400.”

The large numbers are part of the benefit of the Exploration of Music program, Robinson said.

He explained that most students in a school orchestra don’t get the opportunity to meet new people and compete like their peers in band or choir might.

“With this program, you don’t have students competing with each other but you do have students making new friends, getting exposure to different playing styles, but, more impor-

tantly, they’re getting the feeling of playing in a mass orchestra,” Robinson said.

Believe in a Dream started with established programs at Snider and Northrop high schools, working through the leadership of Colleen Phillips and Dean Smekens.

As word spread, more and more schools and orchestra directors became involved, Robinson said.

Now, directors in participating schools include the music played by the orchestra as part of their regular teaching, Robinson said.

“All the teachers are on the same page…they make this a priority,” he said, “and that’s a big factor of success.”

In addition to learning from their teachers, students are also able to learn from older students, as the orchestra is open to students in fifth through 12th grades.

The orchestra also receives help from professional musicians such as the Fort Wayne Philharmonic’s principal viola player Derek Reeves and bass player Brian Kuhns.

“Derek will practice with them, so will Brian, and then play with them.

So it gives them the experience of what a professional musician sounds like, looks like, and then it shows them that it’s possible that they could take this, what they may consider a fun hobby, and make a career out of it,” Robinson said.

Exposing kids to the possibilities that orchestral music can offer is the backbone of the program, Robinson added.

“We started on the premise that, in a sense, every child has a dream and we want to expose them to those opportunities,” Robinson said.

Rotary welcomes Carroll, Northrop Interact clubs

For some local high school students, helping those in need is a necessary part of citizenship in the Allen County community. The Anthony Wayne Rotary honored eight such students — Interact Club members from Northrop and Carroll high schools — at a recent meeting.

The Interact club, sponsored by the Anthony Wayne Rotary, is open to any service-minded student at Carroll and Northrop, said Rotary President Deb Conklin.

“Rotary’s goal is to prepare these students to become leaders and volunteers as adults in their communities.”

Among the individuals at the gathering were Student Rotarians representing seven different

high schools — Carroll, New Haven, Bishop Dwenger, Leo, Concordia, Blackhawk and Snider.

Each student attends Rotary for one month between October and April, so potentially 56 local high school students attend annually, said Conklin. Student Rotarians are recognized by their respective schools for their academic achievement and service work, making them eligible to apply for annual Rotary college scholarships totaling $8,000.

Carroll’s representative for the month of April, Jackson Kent, spoke at the event, reminiscing on a recent visit from Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry.

Each Interact Club carries out two service projects each year, Carroll focusing on the Northwest Allen County district and Northrop helping out in downtown Fort Wayne, said Carroll President Will Blodgett.

Northrop’s Interact Club supports projects including Canstruction, the hygiene project, a coat drive and Jeans for Teens for homeless teenagers, said Richards, a senior club member from Northrop.

Richards recommends that others join Interact.

“I think it’s helped me realize the help that we can give to Fort Wayne, and it doesn’t even need to be monetary,” she said.

“Just your time is all you need, and I think it’s a great club.”

Louive, another Northrop senior, said she has been involved in Interact for several years.

“It’s a really great club to be in if you like to volunteer and be involved in the community,” she said. “We raised money for Honor Flight,” she said, talking about the joy she finds in going to Fort Wayne International Airport to welcome veterans back from their day in Washington, D.C. “We also volunteer as a group, such as at Special Olympics,” she said.

Louive said she will be busy in college and medical school the next few years, but left open the possibility of joining Rotary a few years down the road. She encouraged other teens to get closer to Rotary through Interact.

“I would definitely join this, especially if you’re the kind of person who likes to give back and help others, because that’s what we’re about,” she said. “We’re all friends together, and it also builds a network within the community.”

Interact members from both Carroll and Northrop also perform service work at soup kitchens, as well as organizing their own fundraising events, said Blodgett. In addition, each Interact club participates in an international service project. This year, Carroll hosted a basketball tournament, inviting students from other high schools to participate. The profits from the event were donated to a well project in Africa.

“Ultimately our goal is to better our community,” said Blodgett. “Our mission statement is ‘A better community makes a better world,’ so it’s really just about extending kindness everywhere and trying to make the world a better place.”

Peregrine falcons faced a similar fate as the bald eagle, with almost all of their eastern population being eliminated by the late 1960s due to problems from the pesticide DDT, retired IDNR bird biologist John Castrale said.

Once DDT use was discontinued, the falcons were bred by private falconers and eventually released into the wild.

Since then, their numbers have grown vastly, Castrale said.

“Historically there were 40 to 60 nesting pairs in all of the upper Midwest and southern Ontario,” including about four nests in Indiana, he said. “Now there are 300 to 400 pairs

(including about 20 pairs in Indiana), primarily because they’ve adapted to urban areas and industrial areas.”

Peregrine falcons eat small- to medium-sized birds and catch their prey on the fly, diving at some of the fastest speeds in the world.

“They like tall structures with an abundance of other birds on which they prey,” Castrale said.

“They’re adaptable, so the skyscrapers, the power plants, the smokestacks mimic sort of the natural cliffs and river bluffs, so these boxes have been very successful in attracting birds and keeping the population.”

equipped with two leg bands. One has a unique number to individually identify them in case they are ever found injured or dead. The other is a bi-colored band with a letter and number code to

help spotters keep track of the birds throughout their lives.

They also received their new names from a group of local homeschooled children, I&M spokesperson Tracy Warner said.

Soarin’ Hawk was also on hand to help tag and display the chicks. The organization has been on hand since the beginning to provide medical care if needed, Director of Development Mike Dobbs said.

The chicks were about three to four weeks at the time of the banding, Castrale said, and would be taking their first flights when they reached about 40 days old. By the time they are two months old they will be out on their own.

“It’s kind of neat to have them in urban areas because there’s a lot of people here that can enjoy them. They’re one of the most magnificent birds to watch,” Castrale said.

Lunch on the Plaza is returning for the 2017 season with a longer season, more bands and more chances at prizes.

By popular demand, the lunchtime concert series will return to Freimann Square this year, Downtown Improvement District Events and Programming Manager Rick Zolman said.

“We moved to Freimann Square last year… [and] everyone who attended liked the atmosphere,” he said.

“Instead of getting just business folks we were having

families, grandparents and grandkids attending. People enjoy the park-like atmosphere.”

People will get to enjoy that atmosphere a little longer this year thanks to the Lunch on the Plaza’s 14-week schedule as both June 1 and Aug. 31 — the first and last days for Lunch on the Plaza — fall on Thursdays this year. “[It adds] another chance for someone to come out and enjoy the vibrancy of downtown and really get a chance to see an additional act for the summertime,” Zolman said of the extended schedule.

This year’s acts range from “jazz to a group called the Jug

Huffers,” Zolman added. “It is a variety of music and should have something for everyone to come out and enjoy.”

The extra week also means an extra chance to win a gift certificate to downtown restaurants.

The Chow-Down…Town contest, which is new this year, allows Lunch on the Plaza participants to visit information booths for a chance to win a $20 gift certificate. That amount was increased from $10 last year, Zolman said.

USF Jesters enrolling for summer programs The University of Saint Francis Jesters is accepting registrations from people with developmental disabilities for its summer 2017 program. The program will include a series of workshops designed to give people with developmental disabilities opportunities to explore the performing arts. (ALLEN COUNTY) The nationwide credit

crisis may have turned “the American dream” into an extended nightmare for many Indiana home buyers and sellers.

Banks and mortgage lenders (who are not going out of business) have tightened up their lending requirements to the point where many home buyers today can no longer qualify for a mortgage.

Record foreclosures, rising unemployment, losses in the financial markets and the current credit crunch have not only reduced the number of buyers who can buy but have also increased the number of houses that sellers need to sell.

Prices are under pressure as home sellers lower their asking price to attract a buyer, and as lenders resell their foreclosed homes below market value.

And it’s turning into a vicious cycle -- as many buyers need to sell their current home first -- and many sellers (unless they plan to rent) need new financing to get into their next home. As a result, a sea of real estate agents, mortgage brokers and home builders are going out of business. These professionals are in the business of serving buyers and sellers. But that’s hard to do with the credit crisis when the entire real estate industry traditionally relies on mortgage lending to finance buyers and get houses sold.

What can homeowners do to sell their homes? How can buyers get financing if they can’t meet the tougher lending criteria on credit scores, income verification, down payment amounts and debt ratios?

There’s one local real estate professional who has found a way to make things work even with the present banking crisis. Mike MacDonald is the president of Summit City Investments, Inc. Since 1999, his private investment company has been buying houses throughout the Allen County, IN region without ever relying on banks.

MacDonald’s company takes over existing mortgages or brings in private lenders allowing him to pay homeowners all cash for the properties. He then offers his properties for rent or “for sale by owner” using a variety of unique seller financing programs.

By taking a long term approach and never relying on banks, business has never been better for MacDonald and his company.

“Most sellers are unaware of the options we offer.

What they need most is a qualified buyer... and we might just be that buyer.

We can buy houses in as-is condition, pay top dollar and close in just a few days… or whenever they’re ready.”

Mike says it’s normal for people to think

they must be desperate before calling him to buy their house. “It’s a very common misconception. But until I look at a house and do some research, I won’t know my game plan for the property or what I can offer. But after a single visit to the property and meeting with the homeowners I can let them know exactly what I can do. My offer is good for 7 days and it’s only at that point, with my offer on the table, that a seller can decide if I’m going to become their buyer.”

In fact, price is not an issue for MacDonald. As an investor, what’s important to him is the determination of what income the property can produce. “It’s easy to determine. I also do an appraisal and look at the recent comparable sales. Then I do whatever I can to offer a seller up to full price today -- or about what they might net sometime in the future pursuing a more conventional route. What I can pay depends on the condition, location and financing options available for that type of property. It only takes about 10 minutes to prescreen a property over the phone and to set an appointment. We typically buy 1 out of every 4 properties we see. In fact, for about half of those I have purchased, the seller pursued their other options and then came to realize that my offer was the best all along.”

MacDonald believes the three biggest reasons a house doesn’t sell are: 1) it is overpriced, 2) it is poorly marketed, or 3) it is not fixed up to show well. “I can pay a fair price on a home that needs work. I might even plan to increase the value or marketability by adding a bedroom or bath, finishing a basement or installing a new heating system. Brand new carpet and paint will go a long way to attract a qualified buyer. But I understand that many sellers don’t have the time, inclination or money to remodel a house... just to get it sold. We solve that problem for sellers.”

Overpricing a home could be the biggest mistake.

Listing agents sometimes suggest (or a seller might decide) to ask for a higher price than needed. This might be to test the market or leave wiggle room to negotiate.

However, this can backfire if the seller wants (or needs) a quick sale, or when the “days on the market” stacks up causing buyers to wonder what’s wrong with the property.

Another misconception about how Mike MacDonald buys houses is the idea that he’s probably looking for sellers in financial distress. “Look, when a seller is out of time or out of options, then I’m usually their best solution -- if their property is not over-financed. But most people headed for foreclosure are either overleveraged or actually looking to save their house. If I buy the house the seller must move. They really need to get into a more affordable home... but sometimes I can help by swapping properties.”

MacDonald warns about companies and real estate investors who target distressed homeowners. “Recent laws have been passed in Indiana that apply to any business and investor who targets people in foreclosure. Be cautious, do your research and perhaps seek legal advice when anyone wants to charge you an upfront fee for helping to get your loan modified, or... if they’re promising to lease the home back to you. That rarely works out like the borrower expects and can lead to accusations of fraud.

Perhaps rightly so.”

buys each month? What about the hundreds of houses his company has bought throughout Allen County, Indiana over the last 14 years? Simple. Each month we may have 10 to 15 houses for sale. Some we’ve owned for years and others we have recently bought.”

When we get our buyer cashed out, we finally make our money and can payoff our investor. These investors usually want to reinvest allowing us to buy even more houses.”

Unfortunately many of the mortgage programs once available are now gone. It’s reported that 75% of the available lending disappeared when FHA changed their rules last October and again early this year. But, if you have money to put down and can prove your income, there are still loans available now. In fact, some rural development loans and VA loans still allow qualified buyers to borrow with no money down.

“We help all of our buyers get a bank loan as quickly as possible... or we finance them ourselves. But we’ve never relied on banks. That keeps us in control and maintains our sanity. But we get those loans done every chance we get. In fact, sometimes a buyer can qualify and doesn’t even know it.

Other times they can qualify but need a flexible seller. We’re one of the most creative and flexible sellers you’ll ever find,” says MacDonald.

RIB from Page A1 owner Dave Hart, longtime friend Mike Welch, and a Hart family reunion will smoke and/or roast the ribs, pulled pork, brisket and turkey legs that RibFest visitors expect to find at the first booth on their right each June.

Hart has been cooking, catering and competing for 17 years.

“A friend helps me and usually my family flies in and helps me do RibFest,” he said. “I’m kind of considered the little guy compared to the national guys. They do hundreds of cases of ribs where we do maybe 30.”

Each case contains about 19 slabs of ribs, he said.

Jordan, Pentangelo, the Johnsons and Hart will tell you a lot about their special recipes. No one will tell the exact recipe. They’re in business, after all, and this is a competition for bragging rights and a big chunk of a summer’s income.

RibFest co-director Mark Chappuis revealed that ACME would enter the fray this year.

“They’re throwing their hat in the ring to take home the trophy,” he said. “You know the ACME’s been around in Fort Wayne for 60 years or more. Their slogan is ‘Where Neighbors Meet’ and it’s a really cool little ‘Cheers; type of neighborhood bar and grill, with excellent authentic barbecue. We are delighted to have them in this year.”

Chappuis and his wife, Cindy, operate RibFest.

“We’re a little, family-run operation,” he said.

Local athletes and police and other celebrities sample and judge the food, while the public selects the People’s Choice winners.

Nationally known barbecue masters return year after year to vie for the public’s approval.

Chappuis, a small-business consultant, formerly was marketing director

for the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.

“I happened to go to Toledo, Ohio, one year on a conference and the entertainment that evening was a rib-burn-off, and I thought that was a terrible name, and I started looking around at literally thousands of people there and I saw these guys with multiple trophies from competitions around the country, and I started smelling all the wonderful aromas and I saw them get these big barbecue mops out and put the sauces on,” he said. “And for those of us who are carnivorous, this is about as good as it gets to see the ribs and briskets on the grill.”

“We’re definitely going to be back this year, Father’s Day weekend,” Timmy Johnson said.

“We’ll do the usual stuff as far as our ribs, our pulled pork, our beef briskets. But I bring turkey legs. I’ll do some half-chickens. And then we do our baked beans and those are really good, and then we do our corn bread and a little mac and cheese and coleslaw and potato salad.”

Neza Johnson will return with the chicken feet recipe that she brought from her home in the Philippines.

“All my friends like it,” Neza said. “We’re not making money at all, but for me it’s fun to do that.”

“She talked me into trying it and I thought that isn’t bad, and actually it had some good flavor to it,” Timmy said. “It’s not a huge money-maker, but it’s unique and I like to do things a little differently. This is one of our biggest events of the year.

Some of the people will be wandering over to the chicken feet and you’ve got a chance to give them a taste of pulled pork and the odds of their buying ribs are going to increase.”

Johnson uses a twist on the sauces from different regions.

“My profile is kind of a cross between a sweet and

a vinegar base and then I make my own Carolina-based mustard sauce that is a really unique product, that you either love it or you hate it,” he said. ‘You’ve got a couple different flavor profiles hitting you at the same time and it’s pretty good.”

Neza Johnson also works with variations of an Asian sauce that includes tropical fruits.

“I can’t tell you the recipe,” she said. “We play with it a little bit.”

Flavor from the fire

According to Timmy Johnson, hickory produces a nice aroma and a dominant flavor profile. He said some cooks use oak for a harsher edge on brisket.

Apple is mild, and the flavor is hard to detect.

Cherry loses the profile quickly.

“This oven has never seen anything but hickory,” he said.

Hart, of Low ‘N’ Slow, said cherry and apple wood smoke produces the best flavors.

As for the ACME, the chefs have three woods of choice. They burn hickory, white oak and Jack Daniels maple.

“That’s rock maple locally but when you go

down South that’s the only wood they use for the Jack Daniels distillery, and they burn it down and use it for charcoal and you have that nice color,” Pentangelo said.

A mountain of pork

Johnson can be seen smoking his food on many Saturday mornings beside Timmy’s Pizza & BBQ, 105 N. Randolph St., Garrett. His new smoker can hold up to 250 pork shoulders, about 10 pounds each, which he cooks for 12 to 13 hours. He sets up shop at about 18 events each year, from Kendallville to Wabash.

“A pork shoulder will make about 15 sandwiches.

That’s about 4,000 sandwiches per cook that I’ll be able to generate off that, and you’d be able to do about two of those a day,” Johnson said.

Or, that new cooker will hold up to 150 slabs of ribs.

“Because of the size of the cooker that we’ve got we’re looking at some national things, traveling, merging Timmy’s with Hoosier Daddy Barbecue,” Timmy said. “One of my dream places would be Memphis in May.” Already, Timmy’s travels a wide circuit, serving different local tastes.

Spouses Selling

“We don’t change the recipe but we have different sauces,” Neza said.

“We might manipulate the menu,” Timmy said.

“Three Rivers, that’s a turkey leg show,” Neza said.

“And at Van Wert it’s center-cut porkchops,” Timmy said.

Pricey spices

Hart, of Low ‘N’ Slow, developed his own recipe for the rub, which gets pricey. “So I got ahold of a fellow in Arkansas and I gave him my recipe and he sends it to me in 25-pound bags now for a quarter of the price,” he said. “I guess you could consider mine more of a Kansas City style, where we put on a rub before you cook them and we pull them off and set them on the grill. We usually put a little barbecue sauce on them and make them nice and shiny right before we serve them.

“We started it off as little guys, with everybody down there helping us to get started and learn how

to cook and now we’re competing against them.”

Keeping up with the RibFest demand is difficult, and there’s no such thing as catching up.

“They (other rib chefs) taught me how to cook ahead and store them and keep them warm and then get them ready when you need them,” he said.

Low ‘N’ Slow cooks brisket, pulled pork and brisket, in addition to the award-winning ribs.

Johnson, of Timmy’s in Garrett, does not plan to run low on ribs.

“I’ll probably bring down about 800 slabs,” he said. “On a great weekend I probably won’t do 800, but you’d better be ready for them and you never know if the weather’s really great. And if I don’t sell out I have an event the next weekend.”

It’s not about the candy, or even the money, Rylee remarked. It’s about kids who need those meals. Despite setbacks, and with confidence in support from Principal J.R. Ankenbruck, the club pushed forward toward that goal. Hands shot toward the activities room ceiling when Pope asked who would be selling suckers the next morning and the next.

Rylee brought the suckers box back to the activities room for the convenience of supportive guests.

“I like being a leader,” Rylee later explained to those guests. “I don’t like being a follower; that’s just how I am. Next year I want to lead a group.”

He was glad to see the enthusiasm rekindled, after sales seemed to plateau. “I think of it as a dollar can save four lives because you can’t live without food, so those [meals] are saving lives around the world,” he said.

The members also recited Rotary’s 4-Way Test of truth and fairness. They rang the Rotary bell.

“They brainstorm service project ideas.

They discuss the task.

Then they take that list back to their classes, they share the ideas, and they discuss what the classes want to do, and they bring that back to the group,” Conklin said. “I’ve just been so impressed with these children and their teachers regarding their commitment to service.

They actually wrote about why service is important to them and why they wanted to be a part of this leadership group.

They had to agree to give up their lunch period and their recess [twice a month]. They bring their lunch to the meeting room.”

“They’re just really very positive,” Conklin said.

Each classroom in grades 3, 4 and 5 sends a representative to Early Act. “There are probably three or four kids who are interested in each classroom,” Pope said.

The teacher reads the applications and selects those who are especially respectful and responsible. Four officers also are chosen from Grades 3 and 4. Students in the younger grades are invited to support most

projects.

Pope said enthusiasm is especially apparent in those who are back for a second year. “They have great ideas but somebody has to wrangle them down and tell them this is probably more than we can chew,” she said.

Early Act is coordinating three projects. Like Rotary itself, the club serves internationally, in the community and at home. The Kids Against Hunger international project was wrapped up in May. Then older students, parents and other volunteers gathered to clean up the nature classroom beside the school.

Already, the club has led the school in gathering donations of hundreds of hygiene items for the Fort Wayne Community Schools Family and Community Engagement Center. At that club’s recent meeting, boxes of toothpaste, shampoo and the like covered three tables, waiting for transport to the distribution center, to benefit the homeless population and students in foster care.

The club gathered around the boxes, holding plastic sponges, hairbrushes and soap and smiling for the camera.

“It’s cool seeing their excitement in helping others,” Pope said.

Then there’s Rylee, the leader, giving credit where credit is due. “But we couldn’t have done any of this without the teachers,” he told a guest.

“These guys are all national deals, so I like the idea that the boys from Indiana can throw their hats in that ring,” Johnson said.

Jordan, of ACME, has worked at the RibFest before, assisting the nationally-known Desperado’s.

He had hoped to compete on behalf of his own Big Rick’s Barbecue, which he launched at State and Hobson in Fort Wayne, but the timing wasn’t right.

“So I just got my feet wet working with those guys and seeing how things worked out,” he said.

He closed Big Rick’s but brought his skills and reputation to ACME. He mentioned his RibFest ambition to ACME’s owners, and they offered their support. So he and Pentangelo, who is better known each Tuesday as “The Italian Chef,” will represent ACME at RibFest.

Jordan can be seen at the smoker beside ACME several morning each week.

“We don’t boil or broil the ribs,” he said. “We just put them on the grill, and we use hickory wood, sometimes we use cherry or apple. We smoke our meats from the very beginning to the end and I pride myself on doing barbecue like that. A lot of people broil them or bake them, and if that’s what you like, then that’s what you like. I don’t

knock them because I go to their places and eat their food, too. But I just like to do it a certain way.”

That means starting with dry rub and finishing with a sauce. The ribs stay on the smoker about four or five hours, the pork shoulders for about 10 or 12 hours.

“Our briskets we cook forever and a day,” he said.

Regional recipes

Everyone has a favorite sauce, and Jordan admits he deals with two influences.

“I like the North Carolina style, but my parents are from Alabama and my dad and my brothers were the ones that actually taught me the art of cooking,” he said. “I went in and studied it more and kind of tweaked what they were doing.”

So it’s the customer, ultimately, who chooses between the vinegar-base Carolina sauce or the sweeter sauce from even farther south.

Pentangelo can talk barbecue, too, as fluently as he talks lasagna calabrese, shrimp scampi and fourcheese tortellini. Italian food is his first love, though.

“Everything is authentic, Italian, Grandma’s recipes,” he said. And yes, Grandma was born in Sicily and Pentangelo’s father was born in Rome. Pentangelo has been with ACME for about 15 years.

He sees the RibFest as an opportunity to show off the ACME’s homemade sausages.

stuffing them in natural casings and we’re going to be smoking them and bringing them to the barbecue. It’s all grass-fed meat, not hormone-injected, and it’s our fresh herbs, our oregano, parsley, and a little bay leaf goes in, and black pepper and paprika, garlic, so we grind everything and we put it in a homemade meat sausage,” he said.

“We’ll be doing our smoked wings. We’re the first ones in Fort Wayne that started smoking chicken wings, when everybody else used to fry them. We started smoking them seven years

ago. It’s an original recipe.”

Jordan and Pentangelo recently served another big event, the Fort Wayne Ballet, Beer & Barre BQ, May 6 at the University of Saint Francis downtown campus.

“We just had a wonderful turnout,” Jordan said.

Throwing the gauntlet

The ACME chefs have their supporters, especially among their co-workers but also in the community.

“I hope that people come down and realize that we have people here in Fort Wayne that are in it. I mean a local shop, ACME Bar

and Grill, is the only actual Fort Wayne restaurant that is going to be in it.

We are the second booth away from Desperado’s, and Desperado’s has been coming down there 30 years straight. We’re on the right-hand side, second booth, so we’re right in the fat of it,” Jordan said.

ACME competes for the public’s favor six days a week, he said.

“We do barbecue every day here at the ACME, Monday through Saturday, from 11 o’clock in the morning until 1 in the morning. It’s not just that we’re stepping down there to do it on a fluke. We do that in-house,” he said.

“Just come down and check us out. We understand that these guys are coming in from out of state and we’re competing against the people who are on the barbecue circuit, and it doesn’t scare me, it doesn’t scare Johnny. We’re going to do our best to compete against these guys and all I can say, honestly, is if they win it, they earned it.”

Family food and music

Chappuis said RibFest is a family-oriented event that benefits from the reputations of the national award-winning chefs.

“People ask me all the time ‘What’s your demographic?’ Honestly, that’s so hard to say because good barbecue is synonymous with a good time. It’s synonymous with a type of cooking, grilling that

people can relate to, that they love,” he said. “That goes across all spectrum.

That’s not just teenagers or octogenarians but basically everybody but vegetarians.”

Visitors will enjoy hearing progressive, rockblues music, he said. He described the bands as upbeat and enthusiastic.

Local high school track and field teams or marching bands typically help out selling soft drinks or with other parts of the event.

“We’ve given about $180,000 back to local high schools that have partnered with us on some of the operational issues,” Chappius said.

“They’re all great people we work with down there.

And if someone’s equipment breaks down, I’ve got my big cooker and I’d cook for those guys,” Johnson said. “And every one of those guys that Mark’s got coming in here would do the same for me.”

“Our prices are very competitive,” Chappuis said, adding small groups often share the food and the cost. “We see that a lot where two or three people or couples will come together and everybody will buy a slab and put them in the middle and everybody will just try this one or try that one.

“People love grilling out.

It’s an American tradition, synonymous with fun, great taste and a good time and we just kind of multiply that by about 20-fold for our festival.”
