School bands prepare for season By Garth Snow gsnow@kpcmedia.com

High school marching bands are preparing for football halftime shows, band festivals and perhaps a trip to the state finals. At Northrop High School, John VanPatten returns to Fort Wayne and to the Big Orange Pride from Wheeler High School, in northwest Indiana. In the final days of Northrop band camp, the 2003 Northrop graduate still was getting used to sitting in the band director’s office. VanPatten played trumpet at Northrop during the directorship VanPatten of Barry Ashton. “That’s still Mr. Ashton’s office to me,” VanPatten said. “He was my band director, and it’s kind of haunting to be in Mr. Ashton’s office sitting at Mr. Ashton’s desk. “It’s exciting to come full-circle and be on the other end of things.” “He will pop in sometime in October once the band gets rolling,”

VanPatten was a marching band section leader, and played in the jazz band, concert band and orchestra at Northrop. He graduated from Ball State University and earned his master’s degree from VanderCook College of

Music in Chicago. He worked four years at Wheeler before taking the Northrop job. VanPatten directs the attention to the band members. “The kids have been fantastic,” he said. “They know what they need to be doing no matter

who the band director is.” The 2013 program will be “Crossroads,” he said. The theme draws from themes of past shows, including the 1983 state champion show, “Jupiter.” “So we’re honoring the past and deciding where we want to go from here,” he said. See BANDS, Page A4

Area firefighters are asking the public to Fill the Boot for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The Huntertown department began the annual drive last week, and raised $1,100 the first night. “Everybody was pretty happy to see us out and about,” said Capt. Jason Mueller, the department’s MDA coordinator. This year’s goal is $3,000, about $200 more than last year’s collection. The Huntertown drive was scheduled to end Aug. 21. Motorists still have time to catch the Northeastern Allen County Fire/ EMS boot drive. EMS Capt. Bob Kimm with the Grabill station said crews will take to street corners in Leo/Cedarville and Grabill on Aug. 30 and 31

and Sept. 2. Kimm said 77-cents of every dollar raised goes to help children attend summer camp. Kimm said he was looking forward to helping with the campaign for the first time this year. Ashley Zumstein, the executive director of the 32-county Muscular Dystrophy Association of Northern Indiana, said most area fire departments support the campaign. “Be looking for them and have the money ready to put in the boot and help our local families,” Zumstein said. “Now until Labor Day, they’re going to be out all over.” “Fort Wayne raises between $80,000 and $90,000 every year with their campaign, which is one of the highest fundraising efforts in the country per capita,” Zumstein said.

Matthew Malone said he has known the receiving side of charity, and he was grateful for his chance to give. Malone was among a dozen workers on hand recently when volunteers picked produce from the garden at Christ’s Hope Ministries and Church, 2818 Carroll Road. The food was destined for The Rescue Mission and Charis House. “I was down at the mission, and it’s really good to receive food,” Malone said. “So I’m giving it back to them.” Volunteers were gathering produce for the eighth donation of the season.
