Carroll soloist triumphs as show choirs cap year By Garth Snow gsnow@kpcmedia.com

Hailey Johnson says her first-place vocalist trophy is only part of her reward for her junior year with the Carroll High School show choirs. Johnson won that honor at the FAME national finals in Waukegan, Ill. She sang Gretchen Wilson’s “Work Hard, Play Harder” in the Select Sound women’s show choir’s production entitled “Rhythm and Rhyme.” Select Sound also won first runner-up. The backup band, which performs with both Select Sound and the Minstrel Magic mixed group, was named best band. Johnson also performs with Minstrel Magic. “Minstrel Magic placed eighth in the mixed group division, out of a very large and

Girls on the Run 5k fosters self-esteem By Garth Snow gsnow@kpcmedia.com

Girls on the Run, their running buddies, and other running enthusiasts will dash through Georgetown Square again May 30. The 5k fund-raising run is only the most visible part of a yearround program. “This is not their whole season,” coordinator Hillary Knipstein said. “It’s just the celebration of all they do.” Registration continues online through race day. Girls in grades third to eighth practice twice a week for 10 weeks, in the spring and again in the fall. It’s all for a good cause, said Knipstein, who has been involved since November 2012. “It gives the kids a sense of accomplishment,” she said. “It helps them make healthy choices and builds self-esteem. Each girl has a running buddy, who is eligible for a registration discount. “Tutus, costumes and glitter are strongly encouraged,” the website reads. “To help ease lastminute jitters, there will be a ‘mascot dash,’ with See RUN, Page A6

About 50 Indiana State Police officers stood in rows, as commanders read the names of 46 officers who died in the line of duty over the past nine decades. Capt. Keith Kopinski and Lt. A.C. “Tony” Casto addressed troopers, retirees and the families of fallen officers who had gathered for the annual Indiana State Police Memorial Service, on May 8 at the district headquarters in Fort Wayne. Casto, the commander of the 11-county Fort Wayne district, shared the microphone with his superior, Kopinski, who commands the three offices covering most of northeast Indiana. The list of names began with Trooper Eugene
