BUTLER — Eastside’s Marching Blazer Pride band believes in strength in numbers, but the power of one is just as important. “Stronger As One” is the theme of the 2018 contest show, and director Adam Strong believes the potential is there for advancement in the Indiana State School Music Association contest season. “The group this year has outpaced itself on its early-season progress,” Strong Prough said. “We really don’t want to waste this excellent start. “Besides the given of improving every week, we are pushing to have a more polished version of our show out sooner to give ourselves every reason to extend our season further than it has gone in years past,” Strong added. “This group is most certainly capable of doing so.” There are 29 marchers, with 25 musicians and four color guard members. There are nine seniors, led by drum major Rylie Prough. The band also includes two seventh-grade students, five eighthgraders, five freshmen, two sophomores and six juniors. “Rylie not only brings tremendous experience, but also a mindset as a servant leader that allows her to lead effectively,” Strong said. “Often, new or younger members of a group are seen as a liability,” Strong continued. “In our drumline alone, half of the members are either new or are on an instrument they did not march (with) last year. This could have been but a problem for us, but these members have stepped

up in a big way, and the large veteran core has helped us make their transition smooth.” In “Stronger As One,” the music and visual elements are designed to display a kingdom torn apart by its differences. The kingdom is rebuilt, however, and comes back stronger than ever by focusing on its strengths and common ground, Strong explained. The show features the following music: “Castle” by Halsey, “Schism” by Tool and “Synergy Rising” by Ryan Nowlin. Assisting the band program this year

are Tom Laverghetta (music), Jacob Forte (music and visual), Amanda Berz (guard/ design) and Paige Stibbe (color guard). In addition to home football games, the band will perform at the following contests: Sept. 15 at the DeKalb Invitational, Sept. 22 at the Snider Invitational at the University of Saint Francis, Sept. 29 at the DeKalb County Fair and Oct. 13 at the ISSMA regionals. Contests for Oct. 6 and Oct. 20 have not been determined. The ISSMA semi-state competition is Oct. 27 and the state finals are Nov. 3.

New volleyball coach optimistic about season BY JEFF JONES

jjones@kpcmedia.com

BUTLER — Each season is a fresh start, and with a new coach, the slate is completely clean for the Eastside Blazers’ volleyball team. Suzanne Witmer, who was an assistant coach with the Blazers last year, takes over as head coach. Witmer, who teaches third-grade students at Butler Elementary School, was a four-year, three-sport athlete in volleyball, basketball and softball at Lakewood Park. She played volleyball at two-year school Ancilla College in Donaldson, and continued her playing career at Huntington University. “Having been in the program, it did help me as I transitioned to head coach because I already knew the girls on the team,” Witmer said. “I also knew the girls’ strengths and weaknesses. I was able to see what worked and didn’t from the previous year and (have tried to) build off that.” The Blazers finished 7-22 in all matches last season after posting consecutive three-win seasons in 2015 and 2016. Former head coach Jordan Staus is the new coach at New Prairie High School. “As we look forward to this upcoming season, the team and I are excited because it’s a clean slate. Everyone starts at 0-0,” Witmer said. “The way a team plays as a whole determines its success, and this team has really recognized that volleyball is not an individual sport and have been playing together. Big things can happen when a team recognizes that early in the season.” “This team improves each time they step on the court,” the new Blazer coach added. “They are eager to learn new things and want to put in the hard work. We recognize that we don’t have the tallest girls in the conference, but our

hitters are smart and when they see a big block, they are able to find the open spots and holes. With that said, we have spent a lot of time working on our back court. Defense wins games. We cannot run an effective offense without perfect passes, so the girls have really been working on reading the hitters and playing up balls.” Several players return for Eastside, including seniors Abbi Kreidt, Shyan McKinley, Brynn Phillips and Clare Sexton; juniors Erika Brock, Jessi Gerke and Kelsey Treesh; and sophomores McKenna Elzey and Sullivan Kessler. McKinley led Eastside with 155 kills. Phillips had 74 kills. Erika Brock added 115 kills for the Blazers. Gerke led the team with 327 assists and Elzey added 52. Gerke had 31

serving aces. Brock had a team-high 248 digs and Kessler added 208. Brock received honorable mention to the All-Northeast Corner Conference volleyball team last season. “This is a coachable group of girls, which makes my life easier because they want to get better,” Witmer said. “The seniors have really stepped up their leadership and shared their vision of an enthusiastic and rewarding season with the other girls.” McKinley and Phillips will be middle hitters for Eastside. Sexton will largely play defense while Kreidt is a utility player, able to contribute on offense and defense.

Brock and Kessler will play outside hitter roles. Treesh will contribute as a back row defender, Witmer said. Gerke and Elzey will see time at setter, with freshman Skyelar Kessler possibly seeing varsity action. Another freshman, Mataya Bireley, could give Eastside another hitting and blocking option. Fellow Lakewood Park alum Rae Faur is an assistant coach, working with Witmer. “We look forward to getting better each time we step on the court,” Witmer said. Eastside’s first home match is Aug. 29 against Heritage.

Eastside football team building in year two BY JEFF JONES

jjones@kpcmedia.com

BUTLER — The first year can be challenging. A new coach is learning about his players. The new coach has to convey a philosophy and expectations. At the same time, the players have to learn where they fit in and learn to meet the new coach’s expectations. In other words, it can take time for the pieces to come together. White Lieb When the second year rolls around, that process should be much smoother. That’s where the Eastside football team, head coach Todd Mason and the coaching staff finds itself following a successful debut season that included a 7-4 record and a share of the Northeast Corner Conference Small Division championship for the fourth straight year. “Year two has been much smoother than year one,” Mason said. “Our staff has been together for a full year, and our kids know all of our expectations which King makes for a smoother-running program. Eastside soccer team aims to keep improving BY JEFF JONES

jjones@kpcmedia.com

BUTLER — For Eastside soccer coach Sal Gomez, there was much to like about the 2017 season. The win-loss record was an improvement. The number of goals scored rose while the number of goals allowed dropped. Three of the top four goal scorers return for the Blazers, and Gomez is optimistic that improvements will continue to happen in the 2018 season. A 5-11 record isn’t great, but considering the five victories is the most by an Eastside soccer team since 2011 is noteworthy. The 2017 Blazers allowed 45 goals — the fewest since 2007, and possibly the fewest in the 19 years of the program. Nine of those goals came on penalty kicks. On average, Eastside allowed 2.8 goals per contest. Only West Noble and Westview (twice) managed to score five goals against the Blazers. Exchange student Leon Rizzato led Eastside with nine goals and four assists for 22 points, but seniors Conlan Biddle and Brock Holman and sophomore Jaiden Baker return after reaching double figures in scoring. Biddle shared the team lead with nine goals to go with three assists for 21 points. Holman finished with five goals and six assists for 16 points. Baker scored six times for 12 points. Holman’s assist total was one short of Eastside’s single-season record. The season hasn’t even started yet, but the first improvement has already been realized: numbers. There are 18 players out for soccer this season, giving Gomez a luxury he doesn’t always have: the ability to make substitutions. “I can actually make subs,” he said. “Some games are really tough, and we had to play hard. Some days, we could

Pineiro

Baker

Biddle

make subs so everybody could get playing time.” Another plus is having players with more playing experience. “As the season goes by, I can experiment more and more,” Gomez said. “More kids are getting interested in the game. Every year, I get one or two more (with soccer experience), and this year, I’ve got about seven. They say they love the sport, and they want to stay all the way through. That helps out.” In addition to experience, the 2018 Blazers have speed. “I see a lot of speed,” Gomez said. “We need to work a little more on our touches, but we should be OK.” “You can teach speed to a limit; there are some drills you can do so they can get

a little bit faster, but some of them have speed and I don’t have to worry about it. That’s a good thing,” Gomez said. “I want to try to use their speed from the outsides, and I have speed in the middle,” he said. On offense, Gomez explained he wants his playmakers in the middle with his finishers crashing from the left and right sides of the cage. Senior Julius Pineiro has improved his touch, and Gomez has been impressed with newcomer Nic Blair, a sophomore. Other forwards include junior Noah Johnson, who sat out last season as a

transfer student from Hamilton, and freshmen Chayse Hulbert and Zach Northrup. Assistant coach Sheena Gomez will work with players on their touch skills while Sal can focus on other areas of the game. Pineiro, Connor Cook, Mason Fritch and Chase McDonnell are all possibilities in goal, replacing the graduated Dakota Snyder. Defenders include Baker, Biddle, SEE SOCCER, PAGE 9

New cross country coach inherits talented runners BY JEFF JONES

jjones@kpcmedia.com

BUTLER — New Eastside cross country coach Christian Grube inherits a team that returns plenty of experience, but he would like to add more runners as the season unfolds. Five juniors are on Eastside’s boys team to begin the season, all returning from last season: Gezahagne Biddle, Branden Ely, Jacob Geyer, Braden Vinson and Brock Vinson. On the girls’ side, there are three runners: senior Mary DeWeese, junior Payton Baysden and sophomore Becky Firestine. Biddle, a two-time regional qualifier, earned honorable mention at the Northeast Corner Conference meet. DeWeese is a three-time regional qualifier, and has twice earned honorable mention at the NECC meet. Biddle placed 16th at the sectional meet, running 17 minutes, 56.31 seconds. DeWeese was 21st in the girls sectional race, finishing at 22:30.87. At regionals, Biddle was 44th overall at 17:27.04. DeWeese was 62nd at regionals with a time of 21:58.67. Grube, 24, a Bryan, Ohio native, has been running for several years. This is his first coaching position in the United States. He attended Ohio University. Before coming to Eastside, he was a teacher in the United Arab Emirates for two years, about an hour outside of Dubai. “I have a general idea of what should be done, but it will be a learning experience for me as well,” Grube said. “I know a lot about distance running and training,” he said. “A lot of what happens in cross country, you start off, the gun goes off, the adrenaline, and all of a sudden, a mile in, you’re tired. What I’m really trying to work with them at the beginning is to really learn how to calm themselves down

Grube

and being able to get themselves to recover so they save a little bit for the end and they can finish strong.” In preseason workouts, the Blazers have concentrated on interval training — short bursts of energy to get the Biddle heart rate to spike and then bring it down within the workout. “Let’s say you go out for a three-mile run. Every two or three minutes during the run, you’ll sprint for a minute or two, and then you’ll slow yourself back down,” Grube explained. “Then you’ll sprint again. That interval training really helps with that. If you go out at the beginning of a race and you use up quite a bit of energy, it helps you to recover while you continue to run.” The Blazer boys finished seventh at the NECC meet and eighth at the West Noble Sectional. “The kids ran quite a bit over the summer, so they came in with some pretty fresh legs,” Grube said. “We’ve been able to go a little bit harder from

the start. They seem to be doing well so far. “They’re competitive,” he added. “They all have the willingness to go out there and to be good.” Grube said he would welcome additional runners for this season and future growth of the program. “If we stay in shape and do what we need to do, I think we can do some things on the individual level,” Grube said. “I don’t know if we can do anything on the boys’ side as a team because we’re so small, but as individuals, they can definitely do some things for themselves.” Goals will be adjusted as the season

progresses, Grube explained, with goals for the early part of the season, and then setting new ones as those are achieved. “They’re the only ones that can control what they do,” he said. “If they want to go out and reach a certain goal, that’s going to be up to them. I’m here to help facilitate.” “If we meet those early, preliminary goals, it will make reaching that time that they want to reach that much easier,” he said. “We’re kind of taking it one week at a time. Where do we want to be at the first meet? Where do we want to be at this meet? Where do we want to be when we run in the league championship?”

Fritch, Holman, Pineiro and junior Mike Geiger. Gomez said all of those players can rotate to play defense, midfield or forward positions depending on the opponent or need. “That’s definitely a plus,” Gomez said. “We can rotate people and rotate subs.” In addition to overall team speed, the Blazer coach said he likes the athletic abilities and make up of his players. “They are willing to work hard, and they are willing to learn,” he said. Several players came to the field to improve upon skills outside of organized workouts and practices, Gomez said. “That showed me their interest in learning the sport, and they showed they’re willing to do whatever it takes to do that,” he said. “The other kids, they always ask me, ‘What do I need to work on? How do I need to run?’ That’s the difference with this group; they’re willing to do whatever it takes for

them to get better.” Gomez, in his fourth season of his second stint — he coached Eastside from 2000 to 2002 before returning for the 2015 season — has seen the Blazers improve from one win in 2015 to three and then five wins last year. His goal is to win at least seven games this season. “We eliminated a lot of goals (against) last year,” Gomez said. “Against the power teams, it’s not 10-0 or 15-0 anymore. That showed me the whole program has improved a lot. “We’re going to win as many games as possible, but I don’t want to put the goals too high that we can’t reach them,” he said. “We can get (seven). If it’s more, we’ll take that.” Eastside’s schedule begins with seven consecutive road games, beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday at West Noble. The Blazers aren’t scheduled to play at home until Monday, Sept. 10 against Angola.

also serves as assistant head coach, works with offensive and defensive linemen. John Gravante, who is reserve head coach, serves as special teams coordinator and coaches receivers and defensive backs. Orie Foster coaches receivers and defensive backs and is the offensive coordinator for the reserve team. Landen Brow coaches defensive ends and tight ends. He handles special teams for the reserve team. The Blazers lost Mason’s first game a year ago, to Woodlan — runner-up in the Class 2A state championship game — before winning six of their next seven games. “A successful season would be one that at the end of the season we look nothing like we did at the first game,” Mason said. “We are a very young team that

will need to mature throughout. How fast that happens will determine our win-loss record. “If we can do this, I believe we can be a very dangerous team in the post-season,” Mason said. Eastside opens the regular season Friday with a new opponent, the Heritage Patriots. The Blazers and Patriots have met six times, but not since a 1993 sectional meeting that Heritage won 28-24. Heritage leads the series 4-2. Eastside won home games in 1968 and 1980. The Patriots won meetings in 1969, 1970 and 1979.
