DeKalb County featured on film AUBURN — DeKalb County will be featured in a film being produced for Preserving the Historic Road 2012, a national conference to be hosted in Indianapolis in September by the National Historic Roads organization. DeKalb County was chosen for its wealth of historically significant roads, attractions and people, said Richard Martin, DeKalb County Visitors Bureau executive director. The film will premier at the Indiana State Museum IMAX Theater Sept. 21. It illustrates that preserving historic roads also preserves the history of the people who made them important. The visitors bureau hosted the film crew during filming in DeKalb County and guided the crew to attractions such as the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum, the Silver Screen Cinema in Garrett, Spencerville Covered Bridge, Sechler’s Pickles and Auburn City Hardware. “We are excited and honored to play a role in the film,” Martin said. “This is an excellent opportunity to showcase our heritage and preserve the stories of these unique treasures in our community.”

Sergeant visits GMS fifth-graders Thanks students for Valentine’s Day cards sent to his unit By Sue Carpenter suec@kpcnews.net GARRETT — U.S. Army Sgt. JaBraun Knox personally thanked Garrett Middle School students for their thoughtfulness Tuesday. Knox has been stationed at FOB Bostick, Afghanistan since November 2011. A day or two before Valentine’s Day, dozens of Valentine’s Day cards and messages arrived in the mail from Garrett fifth-graders for members of his unit. The card campaign began when teacher Deb Didion asked guidance director Matt Beerbower if he knew anybody in the military. He replied yes, his sonin-law is in Afghanistan. “From there it went straight to thinking about JaBraun and sending Valentine’s Day cards over there, and the kids were just all over it,” Beerbower said. Knox arrived home for a 15day leave last Thursday, surprising his family when they answered the door about 7 p.m.. The trip home took four days with all the connections he had to make, he said. All 125 fifth-graders at the school wrote messages and cards for Bravo Battery First Platoon, First Battalion 377 Field Artillery Regiment whose duty is to supporting fire for outlying posts and infantry movements. Beerbower’s distant relative,

fifth-grader Rachel Beerbower, learned she had a family connection with JaBraun. “When she found out she was related to JaBraun, she made a special card just for him,” Beerbower said. Knox was touched by her personal message. “She said that I’ve never met her, but she appreciates everything that I do,” Knox said. “We’re related and she told me how. I think she was just overall excited that it was more personal. “They were all great valentines, everyone was happy with them, but not knowing me — but knowing of me made it more special.” The cards remain taped up on the walls in the unit’s makeshift rooms at the base in Afghanistan. “We all hung them up,” Knox said. Rachel greeted JaBraun for the first time Tuesday with a big smile and a hug. He met with fifth-graders in the hallway and fielded questions for about 20 minutes ranging from the temperature in Afghanistan, to what types of food they ate and the types of weapons they used. Knox, who has served in the military for three years and four months, is based at Fort Lewis in Washington state. He was

By Sue Carpenter suec@kpcnews.net GARRETT — The GarrettKeyser-Butler school board was updated on the high school’s community technology project Monday. Ashton Linnel’s students have been developing and designing websites for government and nonprofit entities in the community this year. The project has had two positive impacts — it’s great for the community by giving a better online appearance, and offers students reallife, hands-on experience with organizations and people involved, she said. The class has already created sites for the Garrett Chamber of Commerce, Boomerang Backpacks, the Judy A. Morrill Recreation Center, City of Garrett, Garrett Heritage Days, Garrett Museum of Art, NATMUS and the American Legion Rides. Linnel said senior student Jake Stafford has done most of the design work, while another student has put the information into website form.

The class is also working on graphic design for the city, including logos for the new Garrett police cars and billboards for the city. “This is better than any made-up project,” Linnel said of the actual websites created. Class member Vince Marshall explained how students are taught the basics of website design, then turned loose on basic projects. Students worked with Mayor Tonya Hoeffel on the City’s website and Chief Keith Hefner visited the classroom to discuss the logos for the squad cars. Marshall said he is currently working on a website for DeKalb’s VOICE which he hopes will ‘go live’ by the end of the year.
