Students return to class today GARRETT — Summer vacation has come to an end for Garrett-Keyser-Butler students who return to the classrooms today to a new, individualized learning concept. G-K-B is one of only three districts in the state being recognized for a new, cutting-edge, personalized learning initiative. “The concept takes a holistic view of the individual, skill levels, interests, strengths and challenges
and prior knowledge. The learner owns his or her learning,” said Tonya Weaver, director of administration and innovation at Garrett-Keyser-Butler. Learning is tailored to the individual needs of each learner instead of by age or grade level. “Traditionally, schools tend to teach to a one-size-fits-all model. This approach is the polar opposite, because each child has his or her own individual path

of learning,” Weaver said. “This changes the teacher role and the whole learning environment. School doesn’t look like traditional school anymore.” This approach is very data-driven and allows teachers to stay on the cutting edge of a child’s instruction. All students at J.E. Ober are working within the framework of the Personalized Learning Community. At the middle
school, 99 students working in the Locomotive Learning Community. At the high school, 65 students working in The Academy for Personalized Learning. “At Garrett, our learners are working with instructional coaches to plan their instruction based on the data from their individual learning continuums,” Weaver said.
