GOOD MORNING Mayor to portray scoundrel for Historic Society event BY AMY OBERLIN amyo@kpcnews.net

ANGOLA — A skit about a famous Steuben County scoundrel has been added to this year’s Steuben County Historical Society Treasure Hunt. The mobile history hunt Silas Doty starts at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Cline House Museum, 313 E. Maumee St., Angola. Participants will receive packets identifying historic sites and questions to answer about them. Prizes are awarded to the best answers, which will be judged at 3:30 p.m. at the Cline Museum. Prior to this year’s treasure hunt — the second annual — there will be a historical skit on the Cline lawn. Mayor Richard Hickman will play the part of Silas Doty, an 1800s horse thief and murderer who twice broke out of the Steuben County Jail. “Some say he stole from the rich and gave to the poor,” said Jim Somers of the Historical Society. “There are many legends and exaggerations about Silas; the library’s website has a colorful article.” The skit will feature Doty and the sheriff, which may be played by Steuben County Sheriff Tim Troyer if he is available, said Somers. The performance will lead into the treasure hunt, and provide background on county history that doesn’t have a specific site. Registration forms for the treasure hunt are at Carnegie Public Library of Steuben County, 322 S. Wayne St., Angola, or by emailing sdcfish@yahoo.com or somersjg@aol.com. For more information, contact Somers at 833-9852.

ANGOLA — Vern Kelley turned and looked at a packed Magistrate Court room audience and said thanks Thursday morning. “I want to thank you all for being here. It really Todd Kelley means a lot,” said the father of Todd Kelley, who was stabbed to death nearly 24 years ago in his Hamilton duplex. Kelley, of Hamilton was speaking after Mahfuz Huq, 47, was arraigned for the murder of Todd Kelley, who was 19 at the

Whirlwind year for Wagoner BY MIKE MARTURELLO mmarturello@kpcmedia.com

ANGOLA — A big year for defense attorney Linda Wagoner has gotten bigger. After representing two defendants in high-profile cases this spring, Wagoner has a third, as co-counsel for Mahfuz Huq, 47, who is accused of the Aug. 9, 1989, murder of Todd Kelley, 19, Hamilton. “It’s been a busy year,” Wagoner said on Wednesday as she hustled to the Steuben County Jail to meet with clients. On Thursday she would find herself seated in the jail’s interview room where defendants appear in video conference with the courts. She is serving as Huq’s

attorney along with James Voyles, an Indianapolis defense attorney. Here are the other high-profile cases that have come to trial this year with Wagoner Wagoner as the defense attorney, in both cases as pauper counsel: • Zao Garth Burrell, 25, who was found guilty in March of the June 3, 2012, murder of Brent Dombroski, 40, Angola, in a drug deal gone bad. Burrell was sentenced to 105 years in prison by Steuben Superior Court Judge William Fee. • Donald William Myers III,

35, Angola, was found guilty but mentally ill in April for attempted murder stemming from an April 29, 2004, incident in which he went on a shooting rampage of vehicles on U.S. 20, including shooting at a police officer. Myers was sentenced to 30 years on each count of attempted murder for a total of 120 years by Steuben Circuit Court Judge Allen Wheat. Huq, who was returned to the United States on Saturday after being on the lam for 21 years then was held in prison in India until his extradition, is scheduled to go on trial Dec. 9 in Steuben Superior Court. In 1989, it was the first murder case ever assigned to the relatively new Superior Court.

ANGOLA — A stoic Mahfuz Huq faced Steuben County Magistrate Randy Coffey on Thursday during an initial hearing on a charge of murder, an act police allege Huq committed 24 years ago next Friday. Huq, 47, was returned to Steuben County on Tuesday afternoon after being processed upon his return to the United States in the Marion County Jail. Huq arrived in Indianapolis on Saturday and underwent medical exams before being transported Huq to Angola on Tuesday. He had been detained in a prison in New Dehli after Indiana and federal officials caught up with him and arrested him in February 2011. Bennett resigns from education post in Florida

Auburn adviser says markets can rise higher

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida’s education commissioner resigned Thursday amid allegations that he changed the grade of a charter school run by a major Republican donor during his previous job as Indiana’s school chief. Tony Bennett announced his immediate resignation at a news conference, saying that he while he did nothing wrong he didn’t want to be a distraction to ongoing efforts to overhaul Florida’s education system. Emails published by The Associated Press this week show that Bennett and his Indiana staff scrambled last fall to ensure Christel DeHaan’s school received an A, despite poor 10th-grade algebra scores that initially earned it a C. Bennett called that interpretation “malicious and unfounded” and said he would call for Indiana’s inspector general to look into the allegations because he is certain he will be cleared of wrongdoing. He said it would be unfair to Gov. Rick Scott “to have to spend my time and the State Board (of Education’s) time, as things continue to trickle out, defending myself.” He called the

Jeb Bush had urged him to remain on the job. “The decision to resign is mine and mine only because I believe that when this discussion turns to an adult we lose the discussion about making life better for children,” Bennett said. AUBURN — With the stock market hitting record heights Thursday, Auburn investment adviser David Hefty said it can go even higher. Hefty, CEO of Hefty Wealth Partners and a frequent source for cable news and national reporters, delivered his 2013 “halftime” report to more than 200 clients Thursday night at Bridgewater Golf Club. “We know the markets can continue to rise,” Hefty Hefty said Thursday in an interview previewing his report. He said the central banks of the world’s four leading economies — the United States, Europe, Japan and China — have placed an “implied guarantee that things won’t collapse.” But Hefty warned investors of a “trampoline effect” in which today’s market “goes down fast and hard” and “springboards back up.” He said the market will feature sharp volatility that can be hard
