Records fall at fair auction
GOOD MORNING
BY MIKE MARTURELLO mikem@kpcnews.net
CROOKED LAKE — The records were tumbling at the Steuben County 4-H Fair auction on Thursday, which is the final event of the fair. Of those receiving record amounts for their animals was Stone Groosbeck. Groosbeck is a first-year 4-H’er from Prairie Heights who is a wheelchair user who needed some assistance from friends to show his beef feeder steer, for which he received a blue ribbon. “It was kind of exciting,” Groosbeck said as he waited to get his photo taken with buyers of his animal. “Fun but exhausting.” Groosbeck has cerebral palsy and has been involved with a variety of activities associated with the fair but until this year remained on the sidelines. “It’s been an experience. He’s been wanting to do it for a long time,” said his mother, Kathy. “He’s watched the auction for years and he wanted something in there.” Stone worked with his steer all spring and early summer leading MIKE MARTURELLO up to the fair Harper Henney hugs her with the help sheep during the auction of his parents, Tim and Kathy on Thurday as sister Groosbeck, and Harlee holds her ribbons and trophy. friends. And when it came to fair time, he was ready, but to set the auction record, he was in awe, capping off a great week. Buyers of Groosbeck’s steer were Stroh Farm Suppy, Orland Community Elevator, Pfafman Brothers, Jim Reitzel, Farmers State Bank, Ronnie and Sherry Holiday, Shipshewana Auction and Fillmore Equipment.
Plane crashes into house on Thursday COLUMBUS (AP) — A small plane crashed into a house and ignited a fire in central Indiana early Thursday, injuring two men on board the aircraft but leaving a woman inside the home unscathed, authorities said. Both men were able to walk to ambulances unaided after the crash in Columbus, neighbors said. Their conditions and names weren’t immediately released. The crash occurred around 9:30 a.m. in a well-manicured neighborhood about a mile from the city’s airport, Indiana State Police Sgt. Noel Houze said. Witnesses said they saw the plane flying extremely low and that its engine didn’t sound normal just before the crash.
Library director accused of misusing funds, report says WALKERTON — The former director of a public library allegedly mishandled tens of thousands of dollars, according to news reports. In a report obtained by The South Bend Tribune, state auditors said Scott Klingerman, a former board member of the Walkerton-Lincoln Township Public Library who served as interim director between Feb. 18, 2010, and May 2 of this year, owed the library nearly $96,000. The State Board of Accounts report comes about two months after the library abruptly closed for several weeks amid an investigation by the FBI and state police. The library is in Walkerton, a small town in southwest St. Joseph County. According to the report, Klingerman paid himself more than $15,000 in unauthorized paychecks, withdrew thousands of dollars in library funds from ATMs and used public money to pay for dinners at Red Lobster and the Tilted Kilt.

Did the sparkles help? Another first-year 4-H’er, Harper Henney, 9, broke the record for sheep, selling her glitter-covered Hampshire wether for $3,500 to beat the $3,000 record set in 2008 by Audra Burlingame. Henney wasn’t that happy, though, because it meant parting ways with her animal. “It’s pretty amazing but I’m pretty sad because he’s got to go,” Henney said. The sheep was one of two grand champion animals shown by Henney, the daughter of Mark and Melissa Henney. She also had the grand champion beef steer, which is moving on to competition at the Indiana State Fair. Buyers of Henney’s sheep were Remuda Vet Center, Fillmore Equipment, Shipshewana Auction, Farmers State Bank, Edon Farmer’s Co-op, R&E Drywall, Jim Reitzel, Liechty Farm Equipment, Ridenour Farms, Shipe’s Seed Service and Henney Farms.

Tysen Hunt topped the record for market geese when he received $1,550, besting the mark of $1,200 set in 2009 by Noah Sevits. Hunt was thinking he might come close to or break the record. “I expected it some, but not by that much,” he said. With $350 between his mark and the old record, Hunt thinks it will be the standard for a while. “I think it will stick for some time,” Hunt said. Hunt is the son of James and Stephanie Hunt. Hunt’s goose was purchased by Buell Transportation, Kevin and Donna Skiles, Isaac Tires, Don and Stacy Oberlin, All Corners Cleaning Service, Carol Gould, Jim and Sherry Steffen, Home Inspections by Frank Charleton, Debbie and Earl Mutzfeld, Michelle SnyderCastel One Realty, King Concrete and IQ Meats.

Goat milk brings big bucks
Vol. 156 No. 204
Katie Berlew set the new standard for goat milk with a winning bid of $1,850, topping the old mark of $1,150 set in 2007 by Alison Headley. Berlew said she was going to donate some of her money to her church, save some of it and buy a few things, like a new phone, for herself.
