Fremont’s fire rating scores improvement BY JENNIFER DECKER jdecker@kpcmedia.com

FREMONT — Based on an improved insurance rating for fire protection, coverage rates for properties in the Fremont Fire Department’s service area will likely decrease or at least remain steady, officials said. Insurance Services Office Inc., Marlton, N.J., recently gave the Fremont Fire Department an ISO-5 rating, which was an improvement from the previous ISO-6 mark. “The fire department’s rating went from a ISO-6 to an ISO-5 which is an improvement and should keep insurance rates steady or reduce them hopefully,” said Fremont Town Manager Chris Snyder. Fremont received a Public Protection Classification Summary Report from the ISO group for fire protection. “The cover letter from the ISO folks states, ‘communities whose PPC improves may get lower

insurance rates.’ Since the rating is important in the underwriting process, it very well could lower insurance rates or prices or at the very least keep them from rising,” Snyder said. If that happens, it could naturally save property owners money. ISO collects and evaluates information from communities on their structure fire suppression capabilities. By using a rating schedule, a public protection classification number is assigned to the community. That classification is based on needed fire flow, receiving and handling fire alarms, fire department and water supply. Classes 1-8 present a fire suppression system including a creditable dispatch center, fire department and water supply. ISO is an independent company serving insurance companies and communities in providing information about risk that help determine insurance rates.
