Drone strikes up in Yemen

GOOD MORNING Lawmakers seek review of office INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Top Statehouse Democrats called Thursday for a review of the Indiana inspector general’s office following several cases that they say raise questions about the ethics code applied to those in the executive branch of state government. Sen. Tim Lanane and Rep. Scott Pelath sent a letter to Inspector General David Thomas seeking a “fundamental review” of the office’s duties. They cited a number of troubling cases, including a scandal over former schools chief Tony Bennett’s changes to the school grading formula to benefit a top Republican donor’s school. The Associated Press last week published emails showing Bennett and his staff changed the grading formula to raise Christel House Academy’s score from a C to an A. School founder Christel DeHaan has donated $2.8 million to Republicans since 1998, including $130,000 to Bennett.

Man allegedly beat mom with toilet lid FORT WAYNE — A man is facing charges after he allegedly beat his mother with a toilet lid and stole her car and debit card, our news partner, NewsChannel 15, reports. The mother of Jeffery Jenkins, 36, said she gave her son a ride to the Travel Inn in Fort Wayne on July 29. When they got there, she confronted him about his heroin use and taking and forging her checks. She said soon after that, he started beating her in the head with a toilet lid, hitting her so hard that the seat eventually shattered. According to Jenkins’ mother, while the beating was taking place he kept telling her he loved her and that he was sorry. He reportedly left her bleeding on the floor and took off in her car with her debit card.

Dog days? Not this summer BY MIKE MARTURELLO mmarturello@kpcmedia.com

ANGOLA — The dog days of summer have been pretty tame this year in northeast Indiana. July set records for one of the coolest months on record for South Bend and Fort Wayne this year. With August making up the final days of the so-called dog days of summer, the relatively cool weather pattern is expected to remain intact in the Midwest through the third week of the month and possibly beyond. “No heat waves are forecast through the middle of the month from the upper Midwest to the Northeast. While the pattern will have some warm and humid days, they will tend to be brief. The pattern will make working outdoors more enjoyable and less risky,” said Alex

AUBURN — This summer’s moderate temperatures haven’t done any favors to city-operated swimming pools in Auburn and Garrett. The number of people enjoying the cool waters just isn’t that high when the air temperatures are low. “Attendance has been pretty slow,” said Carlena Magley, manager at the Auburn pool. “We’ve probably had five or six days when SEE POOLS, PAGE A10

SANAA, Yemen (AP) — Three U.S. drone strikes killed a total of 12 suspected al-Qaida militants Thursday, a Yemeni military official said, raising to eight the number of attacks in less than two weeks as the Arab nation is on high alert against terrorism. The uptick in drone strikes signals that the Obama administration is stepping up its efforts to target Yemen’s al-Qaida offshoot — al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula — amid fears of attacks after the interception of a message between its leader and the global leader of the terror network. Since July 27, drone attacks have killed 34 suspected militants, according to an Associated Press count provided by Yemeni security officials. The Yemeni military official SEE YEMEN, PAGE A10

9 inmates get GEDs through local nonprofit collaboration BY AMY OBERLIN aoberlin@kpcmedia.com

ANGOLA — Nine Steuben County Jail inmates have received their GED certificates this year due to a local nonprofit collaboration. Three passed the test earlier this year and six more recently received their GED certificates after working one-on-one with volunteer tutors at the jail. The program was made possible through a partnership between the Steuben County Literacy Coalition, Steuben County Sheriff’s Department, Steuben County Jail Ministry and Steuben County United Way. It began with a grant from the Indiana Association of United Ways supported by Lilly Endowment and coordination by jail chaplain Gayle Fisher. “The matching funds became available based on campaign success; it’s a great example of how new campaign dollars can double.” said Bobbi Grill, Steuben County United Way executive director. “Each United Way can access grant funds equal to 10 percent of

ANGOLA — Steuben County officials are crossing their fingers that a floodplain ordinance never needs to be used via a natural disaster. At the Steuben County Plan Commission meeting Wednesday, it was announced that Vina Conti, assistant planner, is currently writing a new floodplain ordinance. A floodplain is an area next to a body of water that’s flooded during heavy discharge or high water. The county must have a draft of the ordinance turned in to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources by Aug. 17 and approval of the final draft by Dec. 17. Steuben County Surveyor Larry Gilbert, who also chairs the Plan Commission, stressed how crucial a floodplain ordinance is in case of natural disaster. “This ordinance is important for Steuben County,” Gilbert said. It affects Federal Emergency Management Agency programs and insurance rates, said Jim Crowl, Plan Commission member and also a Steuben County commissioner. “We’ve been rated by FEMA,” Gilbert said. “We make sure we’re doing what the ordinance says.” The Indiana Department of Natural Resources website said the Indiana Floodplain Mapping Initiative develops updated flood insurance rate maps based on updated topographical data. Once the preliminary mapping is produced, notification is sent to affected property owners of a floodplain zone status changes. For more details, visit floodmaps.in.gov.
