CROOKED LAKE — A 10-year 4-H’er became a two-time winner in the Steuben County 4-H Fair’s Supreme Showmanship Contest Wednesday night. Ashton Sellers, a member of The Conquerors 4-H club and daughter of Ron and Laurie Sellers, showed seven breeds of livestock alongside other 4-H’ers that were the top showpeople in their respective barns. Sellers, also the 2009 Supreme Showman, represented started calf. “Being my last year, I just wanted to go out with a bang,” said Ashton. “It’s been a good run.” Laurie Sellers, the event superintendent, said she felt emotional as she prepared to announce the winner. She decided to change the traditional dousing from the contestants after seeing the Wednesday afternoon’s Small Animal Supreme Showmanship Contest — won by Katie Davenport representing the rabbit barn — where the contestants turned their backs as they were narrowed from the running one by one. The last three showmen Wednesday night all had first names that started with “A” and the last two left standing there had both won the contest before, Ashton and Austin Penick. Behind them stood the other five 4-H’ers with full buckets of water.

Ashton Sellers was the Supreme Showmanship Contest winner Wednesday evening at the Steuben County 4-H Fair.

When her name was announced, Ashton tried to run from the multiple buckets of water hurled her way, but stood soaking as she held her awards. She said she was thankful to her family’s support. “They’re out there with me every night in the barn,” she said. She said her brother, Logan, the 2008 Supreme Showman, was her biggest influence in 4-H. “I’ve had to show against my brother all these years,” she said. “That just made us stronger.”

Sellers competed against Penick, representing swine; Andrew Offet, sheep; Hailey Fisher, beef; Cody Bachelor, dairy; Grace Moroney, horse and pony; and Jackie Weisenfelder, goat. They showed well, said judge Jason Shuck, a South Adams High School agriculture instructor. He said he was looking for a showperson who was “calm and collected” and focused on showing the animals. ANGOLA — An alleged accomplice in a July 7 killing has been charged with obstruction of justice. Lucas R. Baxla, 18, of Fremont, was arrested Tuesday on a Class D felony charge and arraigned at 1 p.m. by Judge Randy Coffey. The charge carries up to Baxla a three-year prison term. Mark Zachery Hines, 28, and Tyler Lee Biggs, 18, both of Jimmerson Lake, are charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the shooting death of Ruben Sanchez, 29. They are being held in Steuben County Jail without bail. Baxla remained in jail Wednesday afternoon in lieu of $5,000 bail, set during Wednesday afternoon’s hearing. He told Coffey he planned to hire his own attorney. A pretrial conference is set for Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. in Steuben Circuit Court. If he does make bond, he is prohibited from having any firearms or ammunition. SEE BAXLA, PAGE A8

First-year 4-H’er Henney weighs in big in beef BY EMILY ERNSBERGER news@kpcnews.net

CROOKED LAKE — A 9-year-old girl and a 1,340-pound steer may seem to be an unlikely pair of champions. Not for Harper Henney, a first year 4-H’er with the Ostego Go-Getters, who showed the grand champion beef steer Sunday night at the Steuben County 4-H Fair. “It feels really good,” said a beaming Henney, “like all of our hard work paid off.” Unlike many 4-H’ers who will be selling their animals at today’s 4-H Fair auction, Henney will show Alf, the champion steer, again at the Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis, which starts next week. “I’m really, really excited about it,” said Henney. While this is Henney’s first year in 4-H, it is certainly not her first time showing cattle. Henney has shown cattle at open shows since SEE HENNEY, PAGE A8

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House narrowly rejected a challenge to the National Security Agency’s secret collection of hundreds of millions of Americans’ phone records Wednesday night after a fierce debate pitting privacy rights against the government’s efforts to thwart terrorism. The vote was 217-205 on an issue that created unusual political coalitions in Washington, with libertarian-leaning conservatives and liberal Democrats pressing for the change against the Obama administration, the Republican establishment and Congress’ national security experts. The showdown vote marked the first chance for lawmakers to take a stand on the secret surveillance program since former NSA systems analyst Edward Snowden leaked classified documents last month that spelled out the monumental scope of the government’s activities. It is unlikely to be the final word on government intrusion to defend the nation and Americans’ civil liberties. “Have 12 years gone by and our memories faded so badly that we forgot what happened on Sept. 11?” Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., chairman of the Intelligence committee, said in pleading with his colleagues to back the program SEE NSA, PAGE A8
