YMCA leadership changes BY AMY OBERLIN aoberlin@kpcmedia.com
ANGOLA — The YMCA of Steuben County’s recently hired chief operating officer has been named its interim director. Krista Miller, who worked at Cameron Memorial Community Hospital from 2010-13, will lead the Y following the resignation of chief executive officer Marla Toigo. Toigo was hired last summer and over the year in her office saw the elimination of the Y’s more than $1 million building debt and the start of a national pilot after-school program, Active Science. “At this chapter of my life, I have made a difficult decision to concentrate on my No. 1 priority, which is my family,” Toigo said. “My goal is to continue to be active as a YMCA member, volunteer and program participant. Our family will continue to support the YMCA of Steuben
County, as the Y continues to impact lives of youth and families.” Miller said Toigo left the Y with an excellent organizational chart. Miller will handle day-to-day administrative and fiscal operations and Sarah Funkhouser, also hired recently, serves as the membership engagement coordinator. Miller was the membership director at the YMCA in 2008 and 2009. She said she enjoys “coming in every day and interacting with the members.” With a strength in fund raising, Miller said working with Cameron on its capital campaign through a time of growth was rewarding, but that she was excited to get back into a more people-oriented role. Miller has been in fundraising and special events for 21 years, starting at the University of Findlay in Ohio, then working at SEE YMCA, PAGE A6

Cameron ‘topping out’ new hospital construction on Friday FROM STAFF REPORTS
ANGOLA — Cameron Memorial Community Hospital will be hosting a “topping out” celebration for its new, $42 million hospital construction project in the main parking lot at 3 p.m. on Friday. After a brief ceremony and the placing of the final steel beam, refreshments will be served. “A topping out ceremony is a tradition for building trades and
iron workers, a symbol of both the progress on the project itself and the pride and spirit of the community cooperation it has taken to construct a hospital for the people of Steuben County,” said a news release from Cameron. The steel beam will sit on the north part of the new building near the current Emergency Department and will have an evergreen tree placed on top. The custom of including the tree, which is
common in North America and western Europe, was said to have originated in Scandinavia, perhaps symbolizing bringing life to the building and continued growth. The public is invited to help the Cameron employees, physicians, volunteers and construction workers celebrate the safe completion of the steel frame of the new hospital. ANGOLA — Steuben County Sheriff’s Department is investigating recent break-ins and car thefts. Sheriff Tim Troyer said there have been a number of complaints in the northwest part of the county, in the lakes area. Last night, a detached garage was broken into and some tools and other items were stolen. Over the weekend, a business in the Pleasant Lake area was broken into. Deputies recovered a stolen vehicle left along Bachelor Road this week — and other cars have been taken and recovered recently, said Troyer. “The vehicles that they steal are generally vehicles that the keys are left in,” said Troyer. Similarly, homes that are unlocked are more ready targets for burglars. Troyer suggests locking house and car doors and leaving vehicles in well-lit places. While a tenacious thief may break windows or go to other lengths, he or she may be deterred by the idea of making noise or drawing SEE THEFTS, PAGE A6
Yemen once again at forefront of terror fight SANAA, Yemen (AP) — Yemen was thrust back into the forefront of the international fight against terrorism Tuesday when the U.S. and Britain evacuated embassy staff due to a threatened attack, a suspected U.S. drone killed four alleged members of al-Qaida, and militants shot down a Yemeni army helicopter. As Westerners flew out of the country, Yemeni authorities launched a wide investigation into the al-Qaida threat to multiple potential targets in the impoverished Arab nation. Security officials said they believed the terror network was seeking retaliation for a U.S.-backed military offensive that has dealt serious setbacks to the terror network’s most active branch, including the
death earlier this year of its No. 2 leader. The Yemeni army, meanwhile, surrounded foreign installations, government offices and the airport with tanks and troops in the nation’s capital, Sanaa, as well as the strategic Bab al-Mandeb straits at the entrance to the Red Sea in the southern Arabian Peninsula, drawing parallels with security measures following the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole in Aden harbor that killed 17 American sailors. Authorities also set up checkpoints across Sanaa, searching cars and individuals, especially after night fell.
