Pressure ulcers, also known as bed sores, have been the most reported incidents in six of the seven years the report has been compiled, including in 2012. As a result of the 2012 meningitis outbreak, which was linked to a compounding pharmacy, incidents of death or serious disability associated with contaminated drugs showed a significant increase in the Indiana report. The annual report is based on the National Quality Forum’s 28 Serious Adverse Events. A total of 289 hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, abortion clinics and birthing centers were surveyed.

Unemployed Hoosiers must have meetings to get benefits INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Unemployed Indiana residents risk losing their jobless benefits if they fail to show up for an in-person meeting required under a new rule taking effect next month. Department of Workforce Development will begin mailing notices in mid-October to unemployed Hoosiers who’ve received at least four weeks’ worth of jobless benefits. Those individuals will need to schedule an in-person meeting at a local WorkOne office, where they must show a photo ID and provide proof that they’ve been looking for work. Agency spokesman Joe Frank says the provision is aimed at cutting unemployment fraud and making sure people use the agency’s resources to speed their return to work. Unemployment recipients who repeatedly fail to show up for an in-person meeting will have their benefits cut off until they meet the provision.

LAKE JAMES — People often associate northeast Indiana with classic cars, but when the Indiana Seaplane Pilots Association 11th Annual Seaplane Splash In arrives at Pokagon State Park and the Potawatomi Inn on Sunday, there will be many classic aircraft. Many of the approximately 30 planes that will be in the lake and on shore of Lake James are classics. “The vast majority of them are from the ’40s to the ’60s,” said Randy Strebig, Lake James, who heads the Indiana Seaplane Pilots Association. His plane is one of the newer ones to participate, and it was built in 1998. Unlike a car, the engineering for a plane is much more fine-tuned, and aircraft have to go through rigorous annual inspections. The planes land and take off in the first basin of Lake James and park either on the beach or the lawn in front of Potawatomi Inn. Visitors can mingle about the planes and pilots. The weather is expected to be decent Sunday, which could help attendance. “Sometimes while it might be sunny here, it might not be a hundred miles from here,” Strebig said. The event takes place from 8 a.m. to about 4 p.m., though some pilots have been known to stay later in the day, depending on the length of their flights home. Some might only have to travel 50 or 60 miles, while others travel hundreds of miles. During the event, people are asked to be respectful of the aircraft, which will be landing and

ANGOLA — Enrollment at the Metropolitan School District of Steuben County is down nine students from last year. That’s significantly less than the 72-student deficit expected from spring projections, but it will negatively affect funding, said Superintendent Brent Wilson. According to the formula for state funding, MSD will receive $7,139 less this school year due to the lowered enrollment; which amounts to 23 students when tabulated by average daily enrollment, which includes half-time kindergarten students. There are 3,005 students in the district. “We still have a lot of students and a lot of programs we’re going to keep in place,” said Wilson. “Inflation is just eating us up.” He said the district wants to maintain its quality services and give raises to its employees, but will have difficulties making ends meet. Wilson attributed a strong kindergarten class to the “good SEE MSD, PAGE A6

taking off throughout the day. “Safety is a paramount issue for our event,” Strebig said. “Volunteers will be doing crowd safety when aircraft are in motion. Please respect them and moving aircraft on the land and the water.” To accommodate the pilots, who will be using sight to land and take off in the first basin of Lake James, there will be a rectangular shape set up with large orange buoys that acts as a runway in the lake. “We ask boaters to reserve this area for the seaplane operations,” Strebig said. Pilots from around the Midwest will be flying in seaplanes, landing on Lake James and floating up onto the inn’s front lawn. From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., park
