Can Warrior boys maintain area elite status?

Westview’s boys track and field team finished 12th in the state meet a season ago, led by the senior duo of now-Indiana Hoosier Matthew Yoder and current Bradley Brave Richmond Stoltzfus.

The pairing combined to turn the Warriors into one of the most lethal long-distance teams in the state over the past two years. Even with their graduation, that legacy looks to continue for the reigning sectional champions.

Westview narrowly defeated host school Angola in the sectional meet last year, and returns Spencer Carpenter and a host of newcomers migrating from the school’s cross country program.

Will they be able to duplicate that level of success, though?

It’s unlikely, considering only how hard it is to make it to the state meet as a team in the first place. However, the Warriors know a secret to cranking them out, so don’t be surprised if they are, at a minimum, contending for another sectional title this season.

Angola The Hornets have high hopes this season, and they are well founded.

The team is fresh off a conference indoor championship, and field one of the area’s best up-and-coming runners in freshman Izaiah Steury.

“He is simply the best freshman I have ever coached,” said Angola coach Brad Peterson.

Steury is joined by fellow returnees Antonio Luevanos, a junior sprinter, senior throwers Aaron Petrancosta and Ben Villafuerte, as well as mid-distance runners Grant Korte and Jake Bradley. Senior Aaron Chao, a leading player on the Hornet baseball team, also joined the team, but has not done track since eighth grade.

“He came out and exploded on the indoor scene, though,” Peterson said, “winning the conference title in the 60 (meter dash) and the long jump with ease.”

Angola has its eyes set on the team’s first-ever sectional title, but will have to overcome the loss of senior Chase Schnepf, one of the Hornets’ best sprinters, to do so. Schnepf tore his ACL during the state football playoffs last fall.

Central Noble The Cougars finished 10th in sectional last year, but will be lead by regional-qualifying senior sprinter Jesse Jacobs as the team as a whole aims to take the next step.

Jacobs finished second in the 200 at the Angola Sectional, and will be aiming for an even better finish in both the sectional and

regional meets this season.

Churubusco Churubusco only has five seniors this season, but graduated 15 last year, including several key athletes, such as the throwing duo of Brayden Simmons and Garrett Horn, who won the discus and shot put at regional last year.

Senior Tanner Allen looks to fill those roles this season, along with others, such as Hunter Bianski, Reese Wicker and Dusty Barkley.

Other seniors on this year’s squad are Brandt Parsons, a mid-distance runner, and Joey Emenhiser, one of the team’s best sprinters.

“Our talents are good and widespread,” Dock said.

A big-time athlete back for ‘Busco who is not a senior is junior Sam Wood, a two-time state placer in pole vault who is successful in other events as well.

Some other expected standouts are juniors Wicker, Barkley, sprinter Gage Kelly, distance runner Sam Keily and mid-distance runner Shawn Prater; and sophomores Cody Murphy, Eli Lantz, Brice and Brandon Koolvord and Levi Skinner.

Freshman Nick Nondorf has already made a name for himself this season.

“He is lighting it up in the hurdles,” Dock said.

Nondorf qualified for the Hoosier State Relays and has also cleared 5 feet, 8 inches in high jump.

DeKalb Following a fourth-place finish in last year’s sectional meet at Angola, the Barons will be without their most outstanding athlete of perhaps the past decade.

Former Baron and now-Goshen Maple Leaf Isaac Brown left DeKalb as a state-qualifying high jumper and one of the best all-around athletes in the area over the past three years.

“We’re definitely missing him,” said DeKalb coach Seth Wilcox. “He scored a lot of points and was a great leader for us.

We will also miss Seth Knepper, who is now at Trine.”

Knepper was a distance runner for the Barons a year ago.

In 2019, those spots will fall to returnees Austin Curran, a regional-qualifying high jumper a year ago, and the mixture of Clayton Adams, Clayton George and Evan Turner in the distance events. In last year’s sectional meet, Adams finished fifth in the 1,600 (4:45.35) and Turner finished seventh (4:48.22).

The sprints will be the deepest part of the team, said Wilcox. The Barons return a bevy of sprinters and mid-distance runners, including Landon Miller, Aidan Friedel,

The mid-distance races make up the upper tier of those returnees, including Miller, who placed fourth in sectional in the 400 (54.75) a year ago, which was less than a quarter second out of East Noble runner Bailey Parker’s regional-qualifying time of 54.58.

Finally, the team also returns a lot in the field events, specifically in the shot put and discus. In addition to his duties as a jumper, Curran will also help his team in the shot put, while Tylar Pomeroy, Evan Snider, Jacob Barkley and Lukaas Roller will also look to make an impact between the two events.

Among the group, Curran produced the best postseason finish at fifth in the sectional meet in the discus with a throw of 132-3.

East Noble The Knights finished third in the Angola Sectional and fourth in their conference meet in the 2018 season while sending three athletes to the state finals. The bar is set even higher for 2019.

State qualifiers Gage Ernsberger (high jump) and Joe Painter (pole vault) return as two of the leading scorers from last year’s

team, and are joined by a solid group that includes regional qualifiers Austin Liepe (3,200), Dakota McClure (100) and Parker (400).

The Knights return four of the top five scorers from last year — including points leader Painter — and 417 of the 627 total points scored.

Excitement surrounds some newcomers to the program as well, with freshmen Rowan Zolman, Nolan Rhoades and Nick Munson, as well as junior Michael Klein and senior Michael Bender, both of whom are beginning their first track and field seasons.

Eastside Senior Trey Staley will be a busy young man once again for the Blazers. He will compete in four events this season.

Last year, he captured Northeast Corner Conference meet championships in the 100, 200 and long jump. He won sectional championships in the 100 and 200 and placed third in the long jump. Staley placed eighth in the 100 at regional.

In addition to those events, Staley will also be part of the team’s 4-by-100 relay.

The challenge there is that Hamilton returns just two athletes from that team, seniors Sean Murphy and Thomas Harmes.

The remaining seven athletes are comprised of students from other school sports, highlighted by senior Bailey Merritt, who was on the team two years ago, and was a competitive long jumper within the NECC. Others coming to the team this year include Jordan Fulton, Justin Lew, Dawson Miller, Alex Thain, Pran Puwasittinan and Serbian exchange student, and basketball star, Marko Stanojcic.

Of the returnees, Murphy was a sprinter and long jumper a year ago, as well as the team’s second-leading scorer, while Harmes competed in the throwing events. Merritt will reclaim his place as a long jumper on the team, but where the rest of the athletes fit in may yet still need to be determined.

Lakeland Keith Thompson returns for his seventh season at the helm of the Lakers’ program, and has a deep team joining him.

Lakeland graduated only three athletes from last year’s team, and returns twice as many key contributors, in addition to welcoming a solid group of newcomers.

The mix has Thompson excited for the upcoming season.

“We have some very good individuals that should compete for NECC championships,” he said. “We are hoping for a top-4 team finish.”

Austin Collins (sprints/pole vault), Brian Bergman (throws), Collin Alleshouse (mid-distance) and Lucas Begly (distance) are a few of the returnees expected to continue making an impact for the Lakers, along with up-andcoming athletes such as freshman Ayden Marks and sophomores Calin Kent, Miggy Delapaz and Kyle McBride.

Lakewood Park The Panthers enter just their second season fielding a team in 2019 and,

so far, the new year has been much different than the first.

“I think last year there was a lot of skepticism amongst the students,” said coach Daron White. “But after seeing the success many of our athletes had last year there is an excitement to be part of the program.”

LWP lost three seniors from last year’s team, but return several key scorers including Braden Smith (sprints), Colton White (mid-distance) and Zaavan Clear (throws). The Panthers will field 19 boys on the team this year, and will expect many of the newcomers to make immediate contributions, White said.

Prairie Heights Prairie Heights had a small team last year, scoring just 23 points in the sectional at Angola. But it had solid performers, including sectional champion Skyler Cummings.

Cummings returns to the Panthers this year after taking the sectional crown with a pole vault of 13-6, and will presumably be one of, if not the, leading scorer for the boys track team. Zach Wiseman also returns after a sixth-place finish in the same event.

West Noble Few teams fielded as complete of a roster within the NECC as did West Noble last season. In 2019, the Chargers will be back with a majority of their team still intact.

The Chargers return 17 athletes who contributed to the team last season.

The team is strongest in the distance races, where Dakota Thompson, Jordan Shoemaker, Abraham Longoria, Michael Weaver and Nathan Mast all return.

Other key contributors returning include Neal Kathary (throws), Xhua Martin-Garcia (sprints), Josh Gross (sprints/jumps), Kyle Mawhorter (sprints/jumps), Brandon Pruitt (sprints) and Rocky Slone (hurdles).

Hornets, Knights to lead area in girls track and field

Both Angola and East Noble have had some stars taken off the rosters due to graduation, like NCAA Division I athletes Ali Cranston for the Hornets and Lexie Moriarity for the Knights, but they are still likely the deepest girls track and field teams in the area and will battle it out for the sectional crown in mid-May behind Angola Middle School.

There is also a lot of potential elsewhere, led by returning state qualifiers Meleah Leatherman (high jump) and Katelyn Ayres (discus) from Central Noble, Aleka Ernsberger (400-meter dash) from Westview and Churubusco pole vaulter Maggie Burita.

Angola Second-year Hornet coach Brad Peterson feels he has several impact athletes who will lead the way.

A big winter of preparation has helped senior sprinters Laura Rodriguez Lugo, Michelle Luna (400, 200) and Anna-Bella Sawyer-Ewing (short sprints). All three will run relays. Rodriguez Lugo will also focus on the hurdles and long jump.

“All of them made regionals individually last year and are all ready for the next

step,” Peterson said. “Laura is the most improved track athlete in the area. She is being recruited heavily because of this.”

Juniors Samantha Biernat and Taylor Clemens are coming off breakthrough seasons in 2018. They both were regional qualifiers in the 1,600.

Junior Jessica Davis is much improved after making the regional in the shot put last year. Abby Stoy will give Angola a one-two punch in the throws.

Also expect sophomore Makala Gowthrop and freshmen Hannah Blum and Gracie Flatt (hurdles, jumps) to contribute.

“Gowthrop has improved greatly. She can run anything from 200 to 800. I expect a huge year from her,” Peterson said.

“Blum has already run 12:40 indoors. She is going to be special.”

Versatile athlete Katlyn Brown and strong hurdler Sarah Brandt also graduated, and sophomore Hanna Knoll will not run track this spring due to her focus on basketball.

East Noble Moriarity is gone to Western Michigan.

Another top scorer, Kara Kline, is running at Indiana Tech, and distance specialist Krista Boese is running at Spring Arbor, Michigan. Top thrower Pahge Kline also

graduated.

Still, a lot of talent with versatility return for 13th-year coach Andy Bell.

Senior distance standout Kayla McCulloch is coming off a fourth-place finish in the cross country state finals and is no longer in the shadow of dominant DeKalb runner Tyler Schwartz, who is now at Bradley and was the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year in women’s cross country last fall after placing fourth in the MVC meet.

The 3,200 is McCulloch’s event. She was fourth in the Marion Regional last year and just missed a state finals berth. Only Amy Yoder has a better record time than McCulloch in that event. McCulloch was the sectional champion in the 1,600.

East Noble’s 4-by-800 relay team was less than a second away from making it to the state finals. Half of that team is back in the anchor McCulloch and senior Olivia Smolinske. Finding replacements for Kline and Boese will be a process, but there are options on a versatile EN squad.

Speaking of versatility, Smolinske can run anywhere from the 200 to the 3,200.

and flourished. She ran the fifth-fastest time in program history in the 300 hurdles and qualified for regional in that event in 2018.

Sophomore Grace Patton will emerge in the middle distances, and can also high jump, long jump and run hurdles. Senior Lexy Rhoades runs the sprints and throws the discus. Sophomore Anna Becker is the team’s top returning sprinter, but can also run middle distances. Top returning pole vaulter Kylie Garton, a sophomore, also runs on the 4-by-100 relay.

High jump is sophomore Morgan Walz’s best event. But she did a lot of hurdling and long jumping during the winter indoor season. She can also run in the sprint events.

Junior Lanie Norman qualified for regional in the pole vault in the first year she ever competed in that event. Junior Olivia Rummel will excel in the middle distance events. Sophomore Ashton Jordan and Mariah Maley will lead East Noble in the hurdle events.

The Knights have won three straight John Reed Relay titles. They will travel to New Haven three times this spring, including a new event on their schedule in the New Haven Invitational on April 13.

EN will travel to Leo’s track for the first time in program history on April 16.

Central Noble The Cougars are small in numbers and took a big graduation hit that included 300 hurdles state qualifier Kayla Kunkel and a consistent scorer in the throws in Chloe Behm.

“As coaches, we have told our girls this will be a season to focus on individual goals and build for next year,” coach Brittany Stump said. “The beauty of track is that athletes can excel individually and everyone can see themselves improve throughout the season.”

Along with Ayres (regional runner-up in the discus in 2018) and Leatherman (a two-time All-State high jumper), junior Kylie Zumbrun will star in the mid-distance.

“She ran a marathon in November and is running stellar times so far in preseason,” Stump said of Zumbrun.

DeKalb The Barons will look very different with distance standouts Schwartz and Lauren Beckmann graduated. However, new coach Mya Brown likes the tremendous growth she has seen from her girls in the early going.

“We graduated a few key athletes after last season, which left a few positions open. But I am glad to see that many of the girls are pushing to step into those roles,” Brown said. “We have many returning athletes along with some great incoming freshmen with lots of potential.

“Our team this year is very driven and is willing to leave it all on the track every practice and meet. So far we have seen the fruits of our preseason labor early as we competed during the indoor season and had many personal bests.”

Senior Bethany Kelley was a sectional runner-up and a regional qualifier in the long jump last year for DeKalb. She will also run in the 400.

Prairie Heights Sophomore hurdler Jaycee Malone will lead the Panthers this season. She qualified for regional in both the 100 and 300 hurdles last season, and won the 300

hurdles sectional title at East Noble.

Junior Amanda Dyer also ran in the 100 hurdles at regional in 2018, while senior Dezirae Napier high jumped at Indiana Wesleyan.

Westview Ernsberger won regional and sectional championships in the 400 last year, and also scored in the 200 at the regional at Indiana Wesleyan.

A quality thrower in senior LeAnna Miller also returns for Westview. The Warriors will likely rely on plenty of young athletes.

West Noble The Chargers will be solid in the 4-by-800 and 4-by-400 relays and have senior Maddie Schermerhorn in the long jump, 200 and 400. She was a regional qualifier in the long jump last season.

Sophomore Lilly Mast (mid-distance, relays) and juniors Yarency Murillo (distance) and Yesenia Haro (high jump, relays) will also be key girls for West Noble this spring.

Churubusco Some key Eagle returners along with Burita include sprinter Sierra Przemielewski, sprinter Miranda Mallot, thrower Chassy Gallmeier and Brooke Konger, Maddie Gaff and Kilah Smith.

Mariah Hosted is leading the sprint events, and there are plenty of freshmen who are expected to compete well this year — such as Kara DeBolt.

“We have a good core,” Churubusco coach Zach Dock said.

The squad has 20 freshmen and sophomores.

Garrett The Railroaders have a solid core in place, including senior Sydney Weaver (middle and long distance) and sophomore Emma Kioski (sprints), Tia Spiece (sprints, mid-distance) and Sadie Best (throws).

“We expect our girls to compete well individually and as a team this season,” coach Justin Weber said. “We are led by

a handful of upperclassmen who have had some success, and also have very strong freshman and sophomore classes. The lack of graduation has led to some depth, creating some good competition for relay teams that we expect to score points for us.

“If our field events continue to develop, we expect to compete with just about anyone. We will have some younger kids throwing, but they have had a great offseason in the weight room, which should pay off this spring.”

Eastside Junior Erika Brock was a big part of the Blazer squad a season ago. There’s plenty of reason to think she’ll do the same in 2019.

Brock finished second at sectional in the 400 and third in the 100 a year ago, qualifying for regional competition in each. Brock placed eighth at regional in the 400.

Brock will also run in the 200 and as part of the 4-by-100 relay.

Senior Chloe Whitman is the leading returning thrower for the girls, competing in both shot put and discus. Molly Holman and Cayla Whitman are expected to help in throwing events. Lydia Bledsoe, Hailey Casto, Becky Firestine, Brittney Geiger, Jessi Gerke, Madison Haynes, Gabby Kees, Sullivan Kessler and exchange student Pin Titapa should help in running and field events.

Lakeland The Lakers return their top four leading scorers from last season in sophomores Keirstin Roose (throws) and Ella Lewin (800), senior April Chrisman (distance) and junior Sami Scigouski (hurdles).

Roose, a highly regarded college softball prospect, was fifth in the regional and a sectional runner-up in the discus last season.

Coach Keith Thompson feels he has an improved girls team. Having healthy juniors Jazmyn Forbes and Addison Pohlman back from injury will help that.

Freshmen Brooklyn Rettig (high jump), Natalie Huffman (sprints) and

Monica Guzman (distance) will help improve Lakeland, too.

Fremont About everybody is back for the Eagles from last season. They only graduated one senior and there are no seniors on the roster in 2019.

The team includes six sophomores, four freshmen and three juniors. Much of the underclassmen are either new to track and field or have very little experience in it.

Fremont is led by junior distance runner Grace Schmucker. She just missed qualifying for the regional in the 3,200 last year by less than a second.

Junior Samantha Kuhn will be a key Eagle in the field events.

Lakewood Park The Panthers have some key additions in the sprint and field events for the team’s second season of action. That gives coach Daron White hope that the girls will be more competitive in team scoring.

Lakewood Park jumped from two girls competing last year to 11 competing this spring.

Lone returning athlete Abby Chalfant, a senior, will be a key distance runner for the Panthers.

“We are looking forward to improving on the success from last year and how the new athletes will contribute to this year’s team,” White said.

Lakewood Park have added a high jump pit and a long jump pit on campus.

The high jump pit is a donation from Huntington University.

Hamilton The Marines only have three girls participating and they are all freshmen.

“Our main goal is to get them to be competitive by the end of the season,” veteran coach Brian Miller said.

Hamilton’s lone graduation loss was Maggie Ingledue. She is throwing at the University of Saint Francis.

Central Noble’s softball team brings back a lot of quality returning players, including senior first baseman Andrea Leonhardt (27) and junior third baseman Sam Brumbaugh, who is congratulating Eastside players behind Leonhardt late last season.

Returning contenders to take over that lead batting role include senior DePauw commit Emma Konrad, who was second on the team in percentage (.422), hits (35) and RBI (30) as well as Jayden DeGraw, who connected on 31 hits, 23 RBI and a team-best four dingers with a .403 clip.

Senior Reace Peppler also returns to the lineup as a solid bat (.333) after tallying 26 hits, 13 RBI and two homers.

Both Reace Peppler and Konrad also split time in the pitching circle for the Hornets, alongside starter Janna Schwartzengraber.

Schwartzengraber, in her sophomore campaign a season ago, had her ups and downs last season, but still posted a 10-3 record while pitching 84 innings and

recording 68 strikeouts. Konrad served as Angola’s second option, finishing with a 4-5 record and striking out 26 batters in 49 innings. Reace Peppler added 25 strikeouts in as many innings on the mound.

For the Hornets this season, improvement amongst their batting rotation will be key. Players such as Kyler Crowl (.235) and Hannah Blum (.349) posted solid numbers and played big roles for the Hornets in 2018, but the younger half of the batting rotation showed its youth many times, especially in the sectional final loss to Bishop Dwenger.

Fremont The Eagles enter the new season on the heels of the best year ever in program history.

Last season, Fremont posted a team record of 26 wins as well as claiming the program’s

first regional title. Unlike many other area schools, though, it’ll have to overcome significant losses to get back to that form.

While so many other teams return bunches of their lineups from 2018, Fremont captured magic a year ago by utilizing a talented senior class that included all-time home run leader Tory Foster, infielder Baleigh Weidenhammer and catcher Gabrielle Saltzgaber.

The cupboard is certainly not bare, though.

Senior Jaden Cardoso and juniors Maddie Beeman, Riley Clausen, Macayla Guthrie and Makayla Connelly all return to featured roles on the field, and senior pitcher Autumn Godwin returns as the area’s most prolific force in the circle, as well as a recent Division I commit, signing to play college ball at Western Michigan University.

Godwin was the driving force behind Fremont’s successes last year, keying one of the best defenses in the area while posting just a 1.75 ERA through 132 innings. She recorded 163 strikeouts in those innings, and performed at her best in the state playoffs, including not allowing a single run during Class 1A sectional play.

Godwin also hit a walk-off home run in the regional championship game to send the Eagles to semistate.

Amongst the batting rotation, Beeman returns as the team’s lead bat (.389) and posted a team-best 36 RBI in 2018. Cardoso (.371), Guthrie (.354) and Clausen (.302) will also play key offensive roles for the team.

In addition, junior Larissa Stancavage will

be primed to see a bigger role this season.

Stancavage posted a .500 average at the plate last season in a small sample size, going 6-for-12 in just 19 plate appearances — but flashed potential as yet another good bat for an Eagles team that already returns more production than many there.

Westview Two years removed from an impressive 2017 season that saw the Warriors claim a spot as one of the NECC’s best, the Warriors likely enter the new season thinking they can regain that form after a .500 season in 2018.

The Warriors finished with a 5-5 NECC record last season, but return a decent amount from that season, which could lead to better results — the expectation around a school that excels is almost every sport it fields.

The trouble for the Warriors, though, will be replacing three of their top hitters (Adrianna Wilson, Hayley Courtney and Megan Schrock) that graduated after last season. Returnees such as Tori Antal (.400, 15 RBI), Addie Bender (.395, 17 RBI) and Shelbi Smith (.306, 13 RBI) will have to be counted on to pick up a greater portion of the offensive load until either new players step up into larger roles or a different rotation is solidly established.

On the mound, a pitching rotation that was still relatively young looked exactly that. Zoe Williams returns for her junior season after posting a 7-6 record with a 4.47 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 75 innings. Past Williams, the

Warriors are highly inexperienced, though, with the graduation of Sydney Witham, who served as the No. 2 last year.

Junior Chelsea Weaver was the only other player to get playing time in the circle last season, but pitched only four innings. Expect the Warriors to bring along at least one more face into this mix as they try to solidify their rotation.

Walks were an issue as the combined staff surrendered 96 of them last season.

However, if Westview can find consistency in its pitching, as well as its batting lineup, it has enough to still make some noise in conference play.

Prairie Heights It’s been a tough road to travel for the Prairie Heights softball team.

The Panthers finished the 2018 season with a 5-15 overall record, with three of those victories coming within the NECC. Three years removed from an 11-win season in 2016, Heights has to be hoping to regain some of that double-digit win form this upcoming season.

They may not be as far away from that as you think.

Six losses last season for the Panthers came within one or two runs, while three more games ended within three runs scored.

Of those nine close games, five of them came within NECC play.

A 2-1 loss to Fremont capped the regular season for the Panthers, while they also played county rival Lakeland close, 5-3. Heights also dropped close games against Garrett (4-3), Westview (5-4) and league champion Central Noble (5-2).

For the Panthers, the issue may not be talent or players. It’s finishing.

The team did lose quite a few seniors, though, and a younger roster may have a tougher time replicating those tight games against good competition.

Players such as Trelynn Tschannan and Maddie Harmes were solid contributors to last year’s team and could be primed for even bigger roles in 2019. It’ll all be about how quickly those younger and less experienced players come along in determining what kind of successes Heights will enjoy this season.

The Knights were sub-par in league play, though, going 3-4, and will need to improve upon consistency to take the next step forward.

DeKalb A lot was left to be desired for the Barons in 2018, and it started at the plate.

DeKalb batted .250 as a team, and was led

by Myka Betley’s .362 average. She was one of just three players, though, to bat over .300 for the season.

The Barons finished 1-6 in NE8 play, and will need to improve their offensive production to contend with teams such as East Noble and Leo within their league, both of which can slug the ball.

Churubusco The Eagles bring back much experience, with three four-year starters and many others with innings under their belts.

Seniors Breanna Baughman, Abigail Erwin and Brooke Nondorf are accustomed to being team leaders, as the squad had no seniors last season.

Joining them are juniors Madison Simmons, Kurstin Clark and Deja Monroe.

Sophomores Katy Krider, Mariah Hosted, Cara Williams and Amanda Erwin all lettered last year as freshmen.

The girls had a .300 batting average last year and had no trouble scoring runs.

“Our biggest strength was our offense,” coach Phil Nicolet said. “We hope to have an even better offense this year, as many of our players have worked very hard in the offseason.”

All of the team’s pitchers return, and the squad will also add freshman Jaylynn Baughman to the rotation.

“This will give us more options and will give us quality pitching throughout the week when we play every day,” Nicolet said.

The team looks to improve on last year’s largest struggle — consistency, especially on defense.

Eastside

In 2018, Runion led the current group with a 2-0 record on the mound, including one save, with 1.06 ERA, 20 strikeouts, and 17 runs, five earned, during 33 innings pitched. McCoy added 18 innings on the mound, finishing with a 2-1 record while recording nine strikeouts to 19 runs and a 6.87 ERA in her freshman season. McCoy was also one of two Railroaders to hit a home run in 2018.

Senior infielders Olivia Kelham and Kenzie Casselman also return with two full seasons of playing experience under their belts, as well as the complete outfield tandem of senior Marissalee Johnson and juniors Ryanne Arambula and Hanna Collingsworth.

Of the group, Casselman led the team in fielding percentage (.980) amongst players who played at least half of last season’s games. Kelham was second amongst the infielders at .844, followed by Johnson (.839), Collingsworth (.794) and Arambula (.760).

The rest of the varsity roster includes Autumn McDonald, Bailey Payton, Madison Holbrook, Sheri Boucher and freshman Joyden McNutt.

“It’s a deep group that will supply some much needed competition and keep everyone hungry,” Richards said.

Last season, Garrett was seventh in the Northeast Corner Conference with a 5-5 record in league play. The team played to the second round of the Angola sectional, where it was defeated by eventual champion Bishop Dwenger, 12-0.

Top baseball teams loaded with talent

The baseball landscape will feature many of the same teams at the top because of what those teams bring back in talent and experience. However, there are plenty of teams hoping to put themselves into the conversation with some of the area’s best teams.

Angola

The Hornets return a deep roster that was able to share the Northeast Corner Conference regular season title with Lakeland in 2018, and they will be considered as a favorite to win it again this season.

Angola will be led by all-around player and Eastern Illinois-commit Aaron Chao, who many consider one of the top players in the area. At the plate last season, Chao hit .405 with six home runs, a team-high 29 runs batted in, 27 runs scored and a pair of triples.

He also was one of the Hornet’s top base stealers with 14. On the mound, he went 4-2 with an ERA of 1.64 and 70 strikeouts in 42.2 innings of work.

Along with Chao, Angola has two other returners who hit above .400 with 75 or more plate appearances: Jarrett Gibson and Ryan Brandt. Gibson hit .482 as a junior with three

homers, 12 doubles, 19 RBIs and 33 runs, and Brandt batted .476 with a pair of home runs, seven doubles, 19 RBIs and 30 runs, and he led the team with 24 stolen bases.

Gibson also was an effective base stealer with 18.

Senior David Frank almost fell into the category as the three players mentioned before him and was very effective at the plate, hitting .397 with three shots over the fence and 19 RBIs. Junior Chase Soulliere appeared in 11 games as a sophomore and hit .524 in 32 plate appearances. He is expected to have more of an impact this season.

Behind Chao on the pitching staff are Jacob Domanski and Jaxon Gryder. Both ate up quite a few innings for Angola last season. Domanski tossed 19.1 innings with 14 strikeouts, and Gryder sat down 19 hitters in 24 innings of work.

Newcomers to the Hornets include junior Kaleb Farnham, and sophomores Gage King and Tucker Hasselman.

Westview With only graduating two seniors from last year’s team and bringing back four seniors who will play at the next level, the Warriors are poised to be one of the area’s best teams in 2019.

After winning the NECC Tournament title, Westview lost in a Class 2A sectional championship game to Eastside in nine innings.

Seniors Matthew Jones, Hunter Schumacher, Nick Rensberger and Hunter Sharick are all planning on playing college baseball next year.

In 2018, Jones led the Warriors at the dish with an average of .402, 25 runs, 18 RBIs, six double, a triple and home run.

He also added 11 stolen bases. Rensberger brought the power for Westview, hitting five over the fence with a .293 batting average.

He also had 20 RBIs and 25 runs scored.

Schumacher led the team with 24 RBIs and hit .344, and Sharick hit .278 with 16 RBIs. Another senior, Janson Brandenberger, led Westview with seven doubles, while also having 20 runs and hitting .292.

The Warriors bring back their entire starting rotation, led by Schumacher, who pitched 48.1 innings with a team-high 36 strikeouts. Sharick saw time in 29.1 innings and struck out 19 batters. Sophomore Takota Sharick pitched 27.1 innings and waved 16 hitters as a freshman.

After winning at least share of the NECC regular season championship for the first time since 1999, the Lakers are hoping to challenge for it once again.

They went 23-5, 9-2 NECC last season and return senior Kole Miller, who hit for an

average of .444 with 15 doubles, one home run and 25 RBIs. Senior Coby Mitchell hit for .386 with 24 RBIs and one homer, and another senior, Hunter Frost, drove in 16 runs with six doubles last year. Mitchell is the leading returning base stealer for Lakeland with eight last season.

Senior AJ Poe and Frost will lead the Lakers’ pitching staff. Both tossed more than 30 innings last season. Frost finished with an 8-2 record, a 2.88 ERA and struck out 67 batters. Poe was 4-0 with an ERA of 3.82, and Miller appeared in six games and had six saves with only one earned run. Mitchell also saw time on the mound with seven and two-thirds innings of work and an ERA of 1.83.

As a team, the Lakers had a fielding percentage of 95.2 percent and turned 16 double plays in 2018.

Newcomers to the 2019 Lakeland squad include Brayden Bontrager, Caedan Caballero, Jeff Duzan, Kolton Taylor, Jensen Miller and Braden Yoder.

Eastside With three pitchers, an experienced catcher and several core players returning, Eastside hopes to capture its third straight sectional championship this season.

The Blazers finished 18-9 last season for head coach Aaron Willard. Returning from that team are senior pitchers Chase Franz, Maguire Jacobs and Nic Shewman to give Eastside plenty to work with. Jacobs was 4-1 with 38 strikeouts and a 1.94 ERA in 39.2 innings. Shewman was 3-3 with 41 strikeouts and a 1.97 ERA in 39 innings. Franz was 2-2 with 32 strikeouts and a 1.79 ERA in 31.1 innings.

Also returning is senior catcher Joe White, who compiled a team-best .447 batting average to go with 38 hits, eight doubles, 21 walks and 28 runs scored. Also returning are sophomore center fielder Wade Miller and sophomore third baseman Dylan Hertig.

Franz and Jacobs will anchor the middle infield positions, with help from junior Noah Johnson and freshman Owen Willard when one of them is on the mound. Junior Keegan Miller (.317) will likely find a place in the lineup.

“We’ll have to develop depth,” Aaron Willard said. “We have a couple of positions that we’re unsure of, but we have a lot of experience from where we were a year ago.”

Two holes include replacing pitcher-infielder Caleb Ballentine (.351, 33 hits, 33 runs scored; 6-3 on the mound with 66 strikeouts) and first baseman Riley Thompson (.257, 14 runs batted in).

Nine players who have varsity experience are back for the 2019 season, including All-Area player Rhett Norris. The senior hit .378 with two home runs, a team-high 22 RBIs and 20 runs.

Along with Norris, five of the Knights’ top six hitters return, including Dylan Carpenter, who batted .356 with a pair of homers, five doubles and 16 RBIs. Zach Ellert, Brooks Miller and Ryan McNutt also return to this year’s team.

East Noble returns six of its top seven pitchers in terms of innings pitched.

Newcomers to the Knights include juniors Seth Johnson and Keagan McCreery.

DeKalb The Barons will be young this upcoming season after graduating seven seniors off last year’s roster that went 15-12 overall, 4-3 in the Northeast 8. DeKalb only returns three varsity players who saw significant time on the field and will rely on a crop of newcomers to keep the team competitive.

Senior Ben Christiansen and juniors Tyler Stahl and Easton Rhodes will be relied on to do most of the damage at the plate and on the mound this season. All three batted above .300 and had 25 or more hits in 2018. Christiansen hit .357 with three home runs, two triples, 24 RBIs and 21 runs. Stahl batted .313 with two homers, 25 runs and 13 RBIs. Rhodes only struck out three times in 87 at-bats last season and hit for an average of .322 with a home run, 23 RBIs and 13 runs.

As a sophomore, Stahl led DeKalb with 49.2 innings pitched. He finished with a 5-2 record, 78 strikeouts and an ERA of 2.11. Junior Nate Turnbull is the only other player on the varsity roster who toed the rubber for the Barons last season with six innings of work, 14 strikeouts and a record of 2-1.

The newcomers for fifth-year head coach Tim Murdock’s squad are Aric Ehmke, Dalton Smith, Logan Staley and Steele Jackson.

Garrett

2018 team that went 11-13 overall, 6-5 in the NECC and made it to a Class 3A sectional semifinal.

However, Garrett returns with five seniors among its top seven returning varsity players, led by junior outfielder Tristan Taylor, who is a two-year starter and hit .382 last season.

Senior Kobe Lucarelli, who is another two-year starter for the Railroaders, is coming off a season in which he hit .343, and fellow senior Bryce Wilson also returns after starting for the last two seasons and hitting .254 in 2018.

Seniors Hunter Nodine, Paxton Hefty and Keegan Miller also return. Nodine is the third returning Railroader who hit above .300 last season as he hit .323.

On the mound, Jarrett Bailey went 4-1 with an ERA of 3.89 in 2018 and will look to lead the Garrett pitching staff.

Fremont The Eagles are coming off a season where they won a Class 1A sectional title and advanced to a regional championship. Six players who played during that deep run for Fremont return for the 2019 season.

Two key players — Rhett Evans, 2018 KPC Media Group Player of the Year, and Evan Trusty — graduated from last year’s team.

Senior Ethan Marten, who hit .320 with 19 runs scored, will provide the leadership for the Eagles. Junior Mick Laisure will be Fremont’s No. 1 pitcher this year and had a 0.99 ERA in 35.1 innings with 32 strikeouts last season. As a freshman, Kameron Colclasure hit .336 with a pair of triples, 16 RBIs and 32 runs scored from the leadoff spot. He also had nine stolen bases and was 5-0 on the mound with 16 strikeouts and an ERA of 0.88.

Sophomore Dylan Parsons tossed 19.2 innings and struck out 24 batters as freshman.

Newcomers to Fremont are senior Rourke Crabill; freshman Nicholas Miller, who will be the starting catcher; and freshman Ethan Bock. The son of Eagle coach Justin Bock is expected to contribute right away in his first season.

Senior Parker Curry returns as an all-conference player and pitcher. Juniors Jake Fulk and Blake Trostel saw a significant amount of time on the pitcher’s mound last year. Curry tossed 21.1 innings and struck out 28 hitters with a 3.61 ERA. He hit .365 with six doubles and 18 runs scored.

Fulk racked up 44.2 innings and finished with 29 strikeouts, and Trostel added 35.1 innings with 23 strikeouts.

Parker Sturtz, Gabe Richards, Seth Able, Levi McClure, Colton Anderson, Brayten Gordon and Tom Richards all have varsity letters and will contribute again this year.

They will be led by senior Jorge Villanueva, who has been a force to be reckon with on the mound for two years. In 2018, he was 4-3 with a 3.80 ERA, yet had 65 strikeouts in 38.2 innings of work. At the plate, he hit .290 with six doubles and a team-high 13 RBIs. Junior Hunter Saggars hit .308 and senior Jace Dooley batted .321 last season, and senior Takota Weigold batted .280. Junior Alex Ramirez led the team with 11 steals and batted .263. He also had 38 strikeouts in 34 innings pitched. Saggars saw time on the mound with 16 innings and struck out 24 batters.

West Noble has two newcomers this season, seniors Adrian Pizana and Turner Patrick.

Central Noble The Cougars are resetting the program, according to first-year head coach Tyler Graybeal.

They have four seniors on the roster, Kole Forker, Nico Urso, Kyle Ramsey and Tanner Schoeff. A large group of nine juniors, including Chase Weber and Dylan Eggl, will be counted on to help out with the leadership

Hamilton The Marines struggled in 2018, going 0-20 for the season.

But they do return eight players from last year, including six seniors — Dustin Cool, Cory Barnes, Kobe Naus, Ethan Wilson, Jacob Pattee and Josiah Zarate. Juniors Alex Thain and Matt Cobb also return to the squad.

Cool, Barnes and Wilson will be relied upon to do most of the pitching duties this season for second-year head coach Brad Hennessey.

Newcomers to the team are Dawson Miller, Takeru Ogane, Brycen Steury, Jordan Fulton, Ethan Klanderud, Kyle Williams and Robert Johnson.

The Panthers will be very young squad with no seniors on the roster for second-year head coach Scott Boles. Four players on this year’s roster have varsity experience, and according to Boles, all 12 players can be considered newcomers to this level. It will be all about growth and learning how to win for Lakewood Park this season.

The roster includes two juniors in T.J. Faur and Grant Trammel and 10 sophomores — Cayden Skaggs, Jared Jewel, Trenten Chalfant, Dakota Mulder, Blake Yoder, Grant Merkel, Blake Miller, Chris Shively, Logan Bortner and Kyle Bland.

Prairie Heights Prairie Heights graduated quite a few contributors off last year’s squad that went 11-14.

Blake Hoyer, Zach Smith, Codey Shafer and Louis Fraley were all seniors last season.

As a junior, Ryan Rasler hit .370 with a homer, two triples, 15 RBIs and 16 runs.

Layne Bachelor was .299 at the plate with 20 RBIs and 14 runs. As a sophomore, Logan Nott batted .278 with 18 RBIs and 14 runs. He tossed 30.1 innings with 38 strikeouts.

Experience to lead the area in boys golf

This boys golf season will be a competitive one with a loaded field of talented individuals and teams. Multiple teams have their top golfers coming back and a few newcomers are expected to have an impact on how the season shakes out.

DeKalb The Barons might be the best team coming into the 2019 season because of the returning talent. Seniors Gabe Schenk and Bailey Clark were the top two at last year’s East Noble Sectional with a 71 and 72, respectively. Both have signed to play collegiately at Saint Francis next year.

Also returning from the varsity lineup last season are Josh Daniels and Jack McComb. Contributors Gavin Winebrenner and Seth Gramling also return to this year’s squad.

The Barons are coming off a Northeast 8 Conference title and a sectional title and have goals to finish higher during season tournaments and make a deeper push in the state tournament.

Angola The Hornets bring back young talent that should keep them in contention as one of the best teams in the area. Sophomores Drew Dunham and Caleb Price return after being in the varsity lineup for Angola’s third-place finish in last year’s sectional. Junior Forrest Blaschak also returns as one of the top players for the Hornets.

Coach Brian Miller is going into his seventh year as the leader for Angola and his team finished in third as a team at the East Noble Sectional and 15th at the Warsaw Regional.

Newcomers to this year’s Hornet squad are Walker Blaschak, Aiden Koch, Konnor Knoll, Bailey Eberts, Brad Boyd, Spencer Boyd and Trevon Towers. Tyler Crane returns as the lone senior for Angola, and sophomores Landon Henderson and Lucas Peterson also return.

Westview The Warriors had two golfers make the regional stage last season, and seniors Carter Giggy and Brian Titus will lead a veteran Westview team that is looking to be a top team in the area.

Giggy was the No. 1 shooter for the Warriors last season and will do so once again. He came in second at the Northridge Sectional in 2018, where Westview was just two strokes off from advancing to the regional as a team. Fairfield outshot the Warriors 340-342 for third place and the final regional berth.

Along with Giggy and Titus, the other seniors for Westview are Colton Marchant, Zac Chastain and Bailey Hostetler. Juniors Blake Egli, Jack McCoy, Payton Wire and Russell Yoder also return.

The newcomers for the Warriors are all freshmen except junior Titus Schwartz.

The other first-year golfers are Carl Miller, Nathan Miller, Zack Miller, Gramm Egli, Ronnie Raley, Isaac Rogers, Bryce Barton and Bohdy Bontrager.

Garrett

The Railroaders have a lot to be excited about for the 2019 season with the entire roster returning from a season ago. Garrett will be led by junior Levi Follett, who has qualified for the regional in his first two seasons. He also earned All-NECC honors in 2017 and 2018.

Second to Follett will be Warren Joseph, who was an All-NECC honorable mention in 2018. Also returning from last year’s varsity squad are Zane Ley, Noah Dapp and Colton Weimer.

Brady Cook and Thomas Loffler are two newcomers who second-year head coach Dave Demske expects to contribute at the varsity level by the end of the season.

Lakeland The Lakers lost their best golfer in Presten Mortola, who was an All-NECC golfer in 2018, due to graduation. Lakeland finished sixth in the NECC Tournament and its returning varsity golfers include Ben Billman, Bayley Iddings and Luke Franke.

Newcomers for Jon Roush’s squad are Rylee Porter, Rylee Wooster, Michael Marter, Carson Aldrich and Quinnlin Raber.

The rest of Laker roster is made up of Ben Cary, Kissyfur Dearduff, Kalob Miller, Ethan Moore and Tyler Sellers.

West Noble The Chargers have three newcomers to the varsity lineup that coach Marc Daniel expects to contribute right away. Joel Mast, Brockton Miller and Brayden Bohde are all new to the West Noble roster and are among the Chargers’ top golfers.

Andrew Ritchie is another one of Daniel’s players expected to be a top golfer, and Daniel expects all four guys just listed to shoot in the low- to mid-40s in each match.

The rest of the Charger roster includes Eion Fuleki, Brogan Jones, Logan Sumowski and Isaac Weimer.

Eastside The Blazers have a lot of optimism heading into the 2019 season with three players returning from last year’s team.

Senior Julius Pineiro and junior Chase Leeper are the respective No. 1 and No. 2 golfers for Eastside, and according to second-year head coach Kristian Hoff, both have a chance to go a long way this season.

Hoff expects sophomore Kaylob Shaffer to contribute to the team at the varsity level and said he can improve to the level of Leeper and Pineiro by the end of the season.

Seniors Cole Timmerman and Blake Richards are the two newcomers for the Blazers and both have never played at the varsity level.

Hamilton The Marines return two players from last year’s varsity lineup, senior Ty Ritter and sophomore Jackson Stuckey.

Fremont The Eagles will be under the direction of first-year coach Nick Herndon for the 2019 season. Herndon, a Fremont grad, played for the Eagles in the late 2000s and into the early 2010s. Fremont finished fourth at the NECC Meet and tied for seventh in the East Noble Sectional last season.

Central Noble, Prairie Heights Both the Cougars and Panthers struggled in 2018 and finished near the bottom at the conference tournament and their respective sectionals. Heights saw one of its most successful golfers in Coye Blodgett graduate and will be young this season.

Area girls tennis taking a young turn

The area high school girls tennis scene has been young recently, and that will not change this spring.

Angola and Westview appear to be the top area teams returning. They will try to compete with Fairfield for supremacy within the Northeast Corner Conference.

Angola The Hornets took some graduation hits, but have four varsity players returning and appear to be a big favorite in their local sectional.

Angola had what athletic director Mark Ridenour called a “position infraction” in its Angola Sectional semifinal dual with Prairie Heights last year. That affected two spots in the lineup where the Hornets won matches. Those wins turned into forfeit losses and turned a 4-1 Angola victory into a 3-2 Heights triumph.

The Hornets were fourth in the NECC Tournament last year.

They will be strong at the top of the lineup with junior Jadyn Davis at No. 1 singles. She had a 17-8 record and played in the singles sectional tournament despite having an arm injury for half of the season.

Other varsity players returning are Sydney Craig, Bailey Pelliccia and Chloe Hutchins.

Lizzie Gomez has stepped up with an excellent winter tennis season, Angola veteran coach Scott Hottell said.

Freshmen Ellie Aldred, Paige Powers and Grace Shelburne have all shown early promise toward contributing to the team this spring, he said.

“Angola graduated several key athletes last year but has regrouped to create a solid squad again this year,” Hottell said. “The junior varsity has also shown much promise and is progressing quickly with numerous athletic freshmen and sophomores.”

Westview The Warriors also have some big graduation losses to contend with after finishing second in the NECC Tournament. They include Reghan Heffner and 2018 KPC All-Area doubles player Serenity Corlett. But new coach Austin Christner will have solid seniors returning in Madison Kresse and No. 1 singles player Lauryn Riegsecker.

Kresse and Corlett won the NECC Tournament title at No. 1 doubles last season. Where Kresse will play this season is being determined in preseason preparations.

Riegsecker was third in the NECC Tournament at No. 1 singles last season.

Senior Kelby Christner and junior Alexis Roth also return with varsity experience. Austin Christner will rely on that veteran leadership a lot.

Coach Christner graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University last year and played four years of tennis for the Wildcats.

“We have four seniors who are great ladies as well as great players,” he said.

“They set an great example for the underclassmen via their leadership daily.”

Westview will look to improve on its mental toughness and understanding of tennis strategy as the season goes on.

“Tennis is a mental game, so my hope is to teach the girls how to handle adversity. Learning how to handle adversity is a great life lesson,” Coach Christner said.

“As for understanding the strategy of tennis, I challenge our ladies to always be thinking on the court. I want them to understand why someone is beating them and think of different ways to adjust their game plans mid-match,” the coach continued. “It is easy to think of different ways after the match, but we are trying to get the girls to make those adjustments mid-match to hopefully result in a couple more wins.

“If we continue to seek opportunities to learn and improve, then the sky is the limit for this team.”

Central Noble Brad Parker started a program pretty much from scratch, built a strong core and won a couple of sectional championships.

Parker stepped down, and the core he built, the strong singles trio of Erika Maneke, Ellie Cole and Maggie Kaiser, all graduated.

Four new coaches are sharing the responsibilities and working together to build skills at all levels, said CN co-principal Shawn Hoover.

The Cougars have 12 girls playing tennis, including four seniors: Macy Griffis, Chasidy Kissinger, Alyson Robinson and Madi Walker.

Robinson, Griffis and Walker all saw regular varsity action in doubles. Griffis and Walker were new to tennis last year and defeated an NECC opponent for the first time at No. 2 doubles against West Noble in sectional play.

“We are working together to build a sustainable program and encouraging our younger players to develop skills and confidence to be ready for play at the next level,” Hoover said.

East Noble New coach Aaron Edwards will lead the rebuilding Knights, who went 5-11 in 2018.

Returning varsity players include seniors Jordan Stayer and Erin Bloom and sophomore Kayla Desper. They will be joined by a large group of returning junior varsity players and many girls new to tennis.

Key graduation losses for East Noble were Hannah Denton, Rachel Ort and Samantha Ley.

Lakeland The Lakers have four starters returning from a team that went 2-10 last season.

Constant themes for this program recently will continue in that Lakeland will look to grow in court experience and depth in order to be more competitive this spring.

“We have to continue to improve and build depth throughout the team,” fourthyear coach Kyle Grossman said. “We need returning letterwinners to step up and be good every night to compete for wins.”

Junior Beth Stroop placed fifth in the NECC Tournament at No. 2 singles last year. Senior Gabrielle Larimer is also back after playing at No. 3 singles in 2018.

Lakeland also returns starters with doubles experience in senior Ally Llera and junior Isabelle Larimer.

The Lakers have 15 girls playing tennis this season, including nine underclassmen.

Prairie Heights New coach Eric Culler will have 17 girls playing tennis in Brushy Prairie.

Numbers have been an issue recently for the program.

“Coaches have raised their expectations not only pertaining to wins but to develop a more consistent program,” Culler said.

“This group has been working very hard to prepare for the upcoming season.”

The Panthers have experience on their side, but will look to be more competitive to go with that experience.

Jenna Culler, Caterina Staton and Mariana Garcia are in their fourth seasons playing tennis at Prairie Heights. Olivia Mettert and Alyssa Ebert are in their third years with the program.

Fremont You can’t take away last season’s sectional championship from the Eagles.

It was the first sectional title in program history. Coach Lexi Skeens’ young team will look to build from it.

The Barons will be led by battletested senior Bethany Lancaster. She battled a shoulder injury on her serving arm all last season as she went 5-10. She had some three-set matches not go her way, but still made the All-Northeast 8 Conference Second Team.

Senior Marie Burton also returns for DeKalb. She was a KPC Media Group All-Area honorable mention last season.

Seniors Tara Miller and Riley Kruger were a solid doubles team for the Chargers last season. They were the NECC Tournament runners-up to Westview’s Corlett and Kresse last season, then advanced to the doubles sectional tournament and beat the Warrior duo there at Northridge on their way to earning KPC All-Area honors.

Look for Miller and Kruger to stay together to attempt to take a bigger step.
